BrickList: Technic Choppers

Technic Choppers

All the helicopters released in the Technic theme.
The order is chronological, not by preference. 2011 finally saw a decent helicopter set again but it's still not quite up to the standard set by 8856 in 1992...

Created by Duq. Last updated on 28 Jan 2010.

1. 852: Helicopter

One of the first four Technic sets was this helicopter. The sticks in the cockpit move the angle of the rotor blades. A very clever mechanism considering the available parts at the time.
I think this is still the largest Technic helicopter ever released.

3. 8844: Helicopter

This cute little chopper used the new toggle joint connectors for the bubble shape of the cockpit. No tilting blades this time but a retracting landing gear, operated by a lever between the seats.

4. 8640: Polar Copter

The third helicopter was released in the Arctic Action series. Nothing special about it except it's the only Technic helicopter that comes with a pilot.

6. 8856: Whirlwind Rescue

Whirlwind Rescue from 1992 is probably the best helicopter set ever. It is packed with features: rotor blades controlled with the flex system, retracting landing gear and a working winch.
It may not be the prettiest but with so many functions, who cares?

12. 8217: The Wasp

As part of the Technic Starter series of small sets this is taking Technic minimalism to a new level. The tail rotor has no drive, the main rotor spins when you wheel the chopper on the ground.

18. 8433: Cool Movers

Cool movers is as much about the truck as it is about the helicopter. Unfortunately both fail to impress with no functions at all. It's built with Technic pieces but this doesn't really deserve to be called a Technic set.

21. 9396: Helicopter

Three years in a row with a Technic Helicopter and after 35 years we have another helicopter with pitching rotor blades! Other functions are retracting landing gear, a winch and opening doors and cargo ramp. No working stick in the cockpit but it still looks like a proper successor to the Whirlwind Rescue.
