BrickList: The Evolution of the Minifigure
The Evolution of the Minifigure
This Bricklist will cover the evolution and many variations of the classical LEGO Minifigure. Now this will not fit in the captions so here is the origin:
Back then, LEGO only made play sets without the minifigures. When the play sets were losing popularity and kids didn't buy them LEGO did not know what was wrong. Until in 1978, a brave worker, Jens Nygaard made a little man (after 50 prototypes) and there began the minifigure.

1. 336: Fire Truck
Now, this was when LEGO made play sets without minifigures which it lost in popularity to other toys in that decade (yeah I'm talking to you TMNT!). It made beautifal models but kids did not like them. And you'd think this model would be great with minifigures!

2. 355: Universal Building Set
LEGO stepped it up and made Minifigures, their FIRST try, but they did not have arms though. Atleast they were finally attracting children. It would be a while before the real LEGO Minifigure would come out of the toy box. Thanks to Brickmatic for the help!

This was LEGO's second try at the minifigure but since it was entirley made out of LEGO bricks it fell apart. But those heads are highly sought after now.!

4. 912: Advanced Basic Set with Motor, 6+
Say hello to the granddaddy of the minifigure. This was one of the proto's of the minifigure. It did not have printed faces, arms, or movable legs. You'd think that since they had a hat they'd atleast have a face!

5. 600: Police Car
LEGO finally made it. They made the worlds first modern minifigure. Ironiclly it was a Police officer as they are the most common of the minifigure family. With the iconic dot, dot, smile face this minifigure is SUPER RARE. Even with a hat! The first minifigure was born.

6. 376: House with Garden
Then, if you see in this picture the first ever LEGO girl was released. She had a unique hair piece which is hard to find now a days. Same as the Smurfs more men than women.

7. 375: Castle
LEGO made a themed set now, which started the LEGO Themes. This was Castle (in my opinion the only good version). Castle had new features as swords, shields, and axes. Very popular LEGO finally found its true calling... a childrens toy manufacturer.

8. 6251: Pirate Mini Figures
LEGO finally broke its tradition by making new cooler faces on its minifigures, it still had the simple face but with facial hair and eye patches! Also these sets featured the first LEGO animals (the horses in the Castle sets were made of LEGO bricks) a parrot, a shark, a crocodile and monkey.

10. 3676: Cathy Cat's Fun Park
Fabuland brought wierd anthromorphic animals to the bunch. They had cats, dogs, monkeys, bunnies, birds, and a small elephant. They had alittle bit of sets but were very popular. Collectors and AFOL's still remember these cooky minifigures! Thanks to Brickmatic for the help!

11. 3722: Treasure Tomb
What time is it? Its adventurer time. LEGO made the first skeletons with arms that could be moved around but fell easily. Adventurers contained Johnny Thunder a cool Indiana Jones wannabe with his friends, and enemys.

14. 7141: Naboo Fighter
Star Wars also brought new droids minifigures you can put together. We would soon find more of those in Life on Mars a 6th incarnation of the Space theme. Also brought life to the astromech droid R2-D2 as a "minifigure"

16. 3342: Chewbacca and 2 Biker Scouts Minifig Pack - Star Wars #3
Now Chewbacca, Captain Solo's best friend has become a minifigure. But whats that, a new way of making minifigures heads that overlap the torso. Very smart LEGO. This brought way for Ewoks, other Wookies and later Spongebob.

17. 3947: Yoda Key Chain
LEGO strikes back with a Yoda. Now this might seem un-unique but Yoda had the worlds first mini-legs to the minifigure world. It seemed LEGO would be endless with new parts, a statement proved true by LEGO BIG TIME.

Basketball brought spring-loaded pants to the minifigure population with the first african-american minifigures. Kobe Bryant brought so much more minifigures as the Sports series made official NBA players to small minifigures.

20. 4707: Hagrid's Hut
Finally no Star Wars. With LEGO in high popularity, Harry potter was made into a theme. With new owls, bats, a wierd dragon thing on Dumbledores hand, and the other creepy creatures that inhabit the Potter world and the first GIANT LEGO minifigure: Hagrid. Hagrid had limited moving arms but is still a great one to have.

21. 8892: Piraka Outpost
The Bioncle series made a wierd "minifigure" in its later play sets. These minifigures were much like the originals as they could not move in any way. These were non-posable but could be givin weapons. Now these don't count as a minifigure but theyre small. Later, LEGO made them movable (only the arms) by making them like droids from Star Wars.

22. 4604: Police Copter
LEGO tried a Mega Bloks style of minifigure making. Jack Stone was one of these type of minifigures. LEGO tried to relate to kids who liked action figures. These were abit well recieved but some did not like them as they weren't minifigure-like.

23. 3841: Minotaurus
LEGO went the full way by making the first sequal to the minifigure: The Microfigure. A very small and only 2 bricks tall microfigure. It has arms but non movable. Also looks like a good baby microfigure for girls. The microfigure was born here. Very funny as it looks like the microfigures are the minifigure's LEGO in the packaging!

24. 7590: Woody and Buzz to the Rescue
LEGO made a minifigure of Woody from the Toy Story movies. LEGO made a deal with Disney again after a Mickey Mouse try 8 years ago. This figure had long arms and long legs. With 3 holes on his legs instead of 2. This is the newest minifigure version. Some people complain though, about its Chinese plastic but when I bought this set is felt the same. It is wierd that LEGO would make Woody tall, whereas Chewbacca (from the Star Wars series) was very tall too, why did they not make HIM tall? I have a feeling this is Disney told.

25. 9247: Community Workers
Over the years, the minifigure has gone through many different changes. The minifigure has already turned 30 and its still growing. With over 8.3 billion minifigures in production today, the minifigure still looks like it'll stay strong. With divers, police officers, criminals, space astronauts, jedis, toys, and even wizards the minifigure will never be forgotten in the childern and AFOL's hearts. The story of the minifigure will never be over. As LEGO will continue on making new versions and new ways of the minifigure unique, long pants, fatfigures and microfigures. The minifigure is LEGO's greatest creation!
