1. 363: Hospital
Around 1975, the proto-minifigure launched. It had a plain head, a hint of shoulders for arms, and legs facing sideways.

2. 374: Fire Station
1978: The modern minifigure is launched! With movable head, arms, hands, and legs, it proved to be an instant hit! Notable differences to today's minifigures are: Solid stud head and no or small prongs in the torso.

3. 493: Command Center
In the same year, LEGO Space was launched. The helmets of the time did have dimples for visors, but they were just for Castle helmet "lids"! Also, modern visors don't fit on the helmets.

4. 376: House with Garden
One thing worth mentioning is that, until around about 1983, women minifigs had pigtail hair! The pigtail hair made a small "cameo" appearance in 1994 though. And, amazingly, in 2010, in "Vintage Minifig Collection Volume 5", they re-released the pigtail hair!

5. 324: Ricky Racoon on his Scooter
1979: An XL-sized version of the minifig, the Fabuland minifig had a movable head, arms and legs, but with fixed hands. It could not be dismantled!

6. 2705: Passenger Train
1983: Launch of the Duplo figure! It still had movable legs, arms and head, but the hands were fixed and the two legs were fused together! Also, it could not be dismantled!

7. 8620: Snow Scooter
1986: If Fabuland minifigs were XL-sized, then Technic minifigs were XXL-sized! WAY bigger than the minifig, it had knee and elbow articulation, technic pin holes in the legs, moving feet, and slightly larger hands! Also, it could not be dismantled!

8. 6893: Orion II Hyperspace
1987: New Blacktron, Futuron, and... new helmets! This time we have helmets with visors! Another big step in minifig accessories!

9. 6251: Pirate Mini Figures
1989: Arrr, here be Pirates! Pirates marked a departure from the smiley face, using proper piratey expressions, and there were also hooks for hands and the all-important peg-leg!

10. 6314: City People

In 2003, LEGO Basketball heralded the arrival of flesh-coloured minifigs! In 2004 LEGO started adding flesh minifigs to their licenced themes!

17. 3433: The Ultimate NBA Arena
Also in 2003, LEGO launched a variation of the legs: spring-loaded legs! The two legs were fused together, and there was a spring in each "leg" to launch a basketball! Another variation came: arms with modified fixed hands to hold basketballs!

18. 8757: Visorak Battle Ram
2005: Bionicle playset minifigs were introduced! Initially they had no movable parts, but then they added movable arms, heads, and hands!
