BrickList: Classic Castle, the second cycle

Classic Castle, the second cycle

The 1984 relaunch http://brickset.com/bricklists/?75 introduced us to the world of Classic Castle (as opposed to the yellow castle which was part of Town subtheme). The new theme was fleshed out with sets over the next 3 years (1985 - 1987) http://brickset.com/bricklists/?156

1988 though, brought about a new cycle, which lasted until 1992. This list details the sets of the 2nd cycle.

Created by Novelty. Last updated on 29 Sep 2009.

1. 6085: Black Monarch's Castle

The new cycle brings about a new subtheme, the Black Knights and the "crown jewel" of the Black Knights is this new castle. The basic shape and design of the castle was based on the Lion Knight's castle (6080) which it replaced, and there is not much that changed between that castle and this. However, this theme was not built upon until a couple of years later.

2. 6054: Forestmen's Hideout

The forestmen were introduced in 1988, and this was the smaller of the two sets that featured the forestmen. It's a treehouse and is a huge departure from the usual Castle themes of castles and walls.

4. 6103: Castle Mini Figures

With the new forestmen though, there was also a new minifig pack and this one features 2 each of the Gold Lions and the Black Falcons (which was still very much around in this cycle) in addition to the 2 forestmen.

5. 6016: Knights' Arsenal

Unlike the modern subthemes, in the old days (aka the 80s) new sets will be produced every year for subtheme after it's been introduced. This small chariot continues the Gold Lion subtheme and for the first time introduces a small one-man Gold Lion Chariot (after the merchant chariot 6010, the Black Falcon chariot 6011 and the 2 man Gold Lion chariot 6022)

6. 6039: Twin-Arm Launcher

This set introduces the catapult to the Gold Lion and fills a gap that existed previously. Apparently, Lego decided to flesh out the Gold Lions this year with this new catapult and the chariot above.

8. 6077: Forestmen's River Fortress

1989 though, only introduced one set to all parts of the world. This set continues on the forestmen theme and adds a huge fortress that fits in thematically with the forestman series by making it a treehouse, yet brings it to new territory by placing it on a river.

9. 6060: Knight's Challenge
