BrickList: Best Swooshable + Playable

Best Swooshable + Playable

The sets that have the best combination of swooshability and playability.

1. 2160: Crystal Scavenger

Easy to hold (generally from the back-most propellor housing) and zoom around the room, pretending its submerged. You can blow to spin the propellors.

Two cockpits open & close. The drilling (and attack!) devices rotate, with pivoting arms. The rear compartment holds a combination cutter / propulsion device. Comes with a crystal (you get to decide why the pilot is searching for crystals) and a crystal container built into the vehicle structure ... a fuel extraction unit, perhaps?. Unlike many other Aquazone sets, this ship has no grabber arms, suggesting a different play style: Ambush & attack, then steal the crystals!

2. 6939: Saucer Centurion

Has a relatively high piece count for a one-handed swooshing space ship, and is a little bit tricky to hold, though it's possible to hold it one-handed from the back as well as the bottom.

The best part is its playability. Its claw (or possibly a sensor array) unfolds, extends and retracts. The ship separates to release the co-pilot droid on its 8-wheeled vehicle. (One knock against the wheeled vehicle is that it's hard to turn, due to the 8-wheeled design with 4 wheel plates all in a row.)

3. 6897: Rebel Hunter

Right in the 100-150 piece sweet spot for swooshability. It still has some substance, but it's also light and easy to fly with one hand, and there are several easy ways to hold it: From the back (fingers vertical or horizontal), from the bottom (holding near the arrow tiles), from the top (ditto), or also from the three technic axles.

For playability, it drops off and picks up the detainment cell. Without the detainment cell, it can fly in two modes: Long & short. Includes a pilot and a captive.

4. 6155: Deep Sea Predator

Super sleek and easy to grasp in a variety of positions. Propellor spins easily when you blow. The shark shape suggests a number of swooshing movements that you might not think to try with other sets.

Front and back cockpits both open & close. Has two arms, one with a grabber and the other with a magnet. The magnetic arm can grab, remove, and replace a magnetic crystal container stored in the back compartment. Comes with a crystal, which is enough to spark lots of play ideas. Also includes a shark minimal, which adds even more play ideas: Is it an ally? Is it a foe? Does it guard crystals?

5. 6175: Crystal Explorer Sub

Not the sleekest ship, but that's mostly okay, since it's supposed to be a sub. A couple different ways to hold the ship while swooshing, and plenty of propellors to blow. The compass complements the swoosh play.

Includes two minifigs, so you get to decide what jobs they need to do. Has a large front cockpit, and a smaller back compartment that fits a minifig if you stand it so as to look out the side of the ship. Two more mid-ship hatches enclose a third compartment. Controller on the exterior of the ship suggest interesting things for the minifigs to do. Has a grabber arm, a magnetic arm, and a magnetic crystal container. Includes a crystal and a (guardian?) octopus minimal.
