BrickList: Themes that have gone extinct, or do they still live on?
Themes that have gone extinct, or do they still live on?
Over the years, many themes and even systems have stopped production for one reason or another. This isn't a list of all of them.
Here are some of the more memorable themes and systems that aren't being produced anymore.
Created by Novelty. Last updated on 16 Oct 2009.
1. 3660: Fisherman's Wharf
Theme: Fabuland
This theme lasted from 1979 to 1989 and was eliminated in the 90s. It was sneakily revived as Mickey Mouse (see below) in the 90s, but that only lasted a year.
Fabuland parts though, lived on in many future themes, from the hairbrushes found in Paradisa to the crow's nest found in Pirates.

2. 4167: Mickey's Mansion
Theme: Mickey Mouse
This licensed theme was a Fabuland revival in the 1990s, but only lasted a year. It is yet to be seen if the new license signed with Disney in 2009 will bring back the Mickey Mouse theme.

3. 550: Basic Building Set, 5+
Theme: Basic
The theme was the backbone of Lego throughout the early years. It has since morphed to Designer/Make and Create and now to Creator.

4. 2855: Baby tiger
System: Primo
This system was a variation of the Duplo system for even younger children - there's only one huge stud on all bricks. There were connector bricks to ensure compatibility with the with the Duplo system as well, but it was very much a dud.

5. 6765: Gold City Junction
Theme: Wild West/Western
Cowboys, Bandits and Indians! This theme created the wild west. The theme ended in 2002, but there is a petition to bring it back from at least one online community.
Some of the parts live on in future sets, including the snakes in Adventurers and the weapons in a variety of sets.

6. 5948: Desert Expedition
Theme: Adventurers (and Orient Expedition)
Desert, Jungle, Dino Island and the Orient. This theme was about aventures and treasure hunting in the mid 20th century. The idea has been reborn in the Indiana Jones license theme and the Prince of Persia license theme.

8. 6774: Alpha Team ATV
Theme: Alpha Team
Recreate battles over the Arctic, under the Ocean, and on a secret island between the alpha team and ogel. This was Lego's answer to G.I.Joe. The theme may have gone the way of the dodo, or has it? Doesn't it remind you of... maybe Agents?

9. 3510: Promotional Set
System: Znap
This is the Lego version of K'nex or Mechanno. Models were built using a completely new system. It didn't catch on - lego is about bricks, not rods or other building parts. Some of the parts though, have survived in future sets.

System: Clikits
Build your own jewellery? Would little girls like to wear lego as a fashion accessory? Apparently so as this system lasted for 4 years.

12. 4040: Nick
System: Galidor
Action figures with interchangable parts. This sounds interesting in theory, but was impractical in reality. The lesser known subject matter did not help the sales of the line and it died off. Lego learnt its lesson and Bionicle and Knight Kingdom action figures were based on Technic parts. Some are calling the new Ben 10 theme the new Galidor.

13. 5470: My First Quatro Figure
System: Quatro
Duplo bricks, but double again the size! The studs on these bricks were 4 times the size of a normal Lego system brick, hence the name. Like it's predecessor Primo, it wasn't very popular with its target demographic (babies) and it died a slow death after 3 years with only 10 sets produced.

This theme had a number of subthemes including Jurassic Park and Nesquick Rabbit. It also saw the introduction of Spiderman which went on to receive its own theme a year later.

15. 4852: Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin -- The final showdown
Theme: Spiderman
It featured sets from the two spiderman movies. However, Lego did not continue its partnership with Marvel for the 3rd movie and this theme died prematurely. However, the superhero genre lived on in Batman.

16. 7884: Batman's Buggy: The Escape of Mr. Freeze
Theme: Batman
Lego switched its license from Marvel's Spiderman to DC's Batman and this theme lasted for 3 years. Bits and pieces from Batman still survive in other themes, but the Batman theme is no more.

17. 7017: Viking Catapault versus the Nidhogg Dragon
Theme: Viking
This wasn't really a Castle theme, but was an odd little theme on its own. The theme does not live on, but the mythological fantasy aspects is still alive in Castle sets today.
