BrickList: Weakest Star Wars sets - 1999 to the present day
Weakest Star Wars sets - 1999 to the present day
Which Star Wars sets have disappointed the most over the years ? We all have our own list of the sets we love to hate, and here's my list - one set per year since 1999 when it all began..... And just in case anybody's wondering, I own all these sets, so I speak from personal experience.

1. 7151: Sith Infiltrator
Here's my choice for 1999. What a painfully clunky set - a million light-years from 2007's elegant remake (set number 7663). I mean, just look at it - without the cool Darth Maul minifig and the name on the box it'd be a challenge to figure out what it's supposed to be at all. Just miserable.

2. 7144: Slave I
Despite the number of sets to choose from - 20 Star Wars sets were released in 2000 - it's a difficult choice as all the sets have at least something going for them. Even the much-derided Podracer Bucket (7159) has a charm all of its own. I need a winner, however, so it'll have to be the first apearance of Slave 1. Yes, I know that the Boba Fett figure is uber-cool, and who doesn't love Han in carbonite ? Just look at the actual ship, though - does it look like Slave 1 to you ? Really ?! Later versions are so much better, and apart from the figures it's really not a great set, so I'm afraid it gets my vote for 2000.

3. 8008: Stormtrooper
2001 was another cracking year - some excellent sets, with 10019 UCS Rebel Blockade Runner being one of my all time favourites. I'm afraid that this Stormie lets the side down, however - if you were to ask 100 people in the street what it's supposed to be, you'd be lucky to find even one who could figure it out. Some of the Star Wars Lego Technic sets are great, but this isn't one of them....

4. 7152: TIE Fighter & Y-wing
Ah - 2002 ! Another great year ! We got the awesome 10030 UCS Imperial Star Destroyer, the sexy 10026 Chrome-covered (but expensive....) Special Edition Naboo Starfighter, the 8010 Technic Darth Vader and some other great sets. But we got something else as well - Lego started to get a bit lazy ! It's just not right to re-release a set which is basically identical to a previous set (even including the box art....) - it's lazy, and it makes life miserable for collectors like me who like to obsessively collect all the Star Wars sets. I mean, I've now got 3 of these sets (see later....) which are basically identical apart from the set number on the box. Shame on you, Lego Corporation !

5. 4489: AT-AT
My wife recently came in to my study and saw this on display. Her reaction ? "It looks like a baby cow". A baby cow ?! Once I had recovered from the shock I took a close look, and you know what ? She's right - it does ! The AT-AT is the Empire's fearsome workhorse, designed to strike fear into its enemies. How much fear would a baby cow provoke ? None. It would be useless - everyone would just laugh. More work required on this one, I'm afraid, so it gets my wooden spoon for 2003.

6. 7262: TIE Fighter and Y-Wing
Excuse me - is this deja vu ? No, surely the Lego Corporation wouldn't release exactly the same set 3 times in 5 years ? It would, you know ! Even the 7140 X-Wing was only remade once, as 7142. But 3 times for this set is ridiculous, so it gets my vote for 2004 !

7. 7283: Ultimate Space Battle
Man it was difficult to find this set, and I paid a fortune for it, even though it's just a rehash of existing sets. A collectors nightmare, basically. And now I have it, and it's really not that exciting. The box is small and weedy, I've already seen the vehicles in other sets, and really, I can't think of anything very exciting to add. OK, I admit it's actually not bad, and as a starter set bought at the original 2005 list price by somebody who doesn't already have the vehicles and minifigs in other sets it's probably a great playset, but this isn't a democracy - it's my list, so this set gets my vote and that's final.

8. 6211: Imperial Star Destroyer
I really apologise for making 6211 my pick for 2006. it's just that when I put it next to the stupendous 10030 UCS Imperial Star Destroyer it just looks so....pathetic and small. Yes, I understand that it's a playset. I also realise that if I didn't have 10030 then I'd probably love this set. But I do have 10030, and nothing can compare with that. So 6211 gets the vote - sorry.

9. 7664: TIE Crawler
OK, so what exactly is this ? I've seen all the movies about 100 times and I've never seen one of these. Yeah, OK so it's a nice idea, and it has 548 pieces. Except that it seems like about 547 of the pieces are these fiddly little links that join together to make the tracks. So it's actually not a big set after all. It's not terrible, but it's up again such strong competition in 2007 that it gets the 'prize'.

10. 7672: Rogue Shadow
OK, so predictable choice. This set suffers because it doesn't bring with it warm memories from watching the movies, so it's disadvantaged from the start. Thing is, the design's a bit chaotic for my liking as well. I like my ships sleek, or at least believable, and this set doesn't meet either criterion. So it gets my nod for 2008.

11. 7751: Ahsoka's Starfighter and Droids
Just what is it about this set that makes it so expensive ? It just seems waaaay overpriced for something so uninspiring. I mean, you could buy the excellent 7778 midi Millenium Falcon for less. Or 3 Battle Packs for less. It's not that the sets is particularly bad, just that it didn't grab me at all compared with the competition. So into the list it goes.
