If you could only get one Castle set a year, you should get ...
This is basically a "Best Castle set of the Year" list, but it's not based on the design aesthetics. Fun and Playability are also included as criterion for selecting the sets that appears on this list.

1. 1592: Town Square - Castle Scene
Pre-1984. The original yellow castle should really be on this list, but it's iconic and will probably appear on many lists. I've chosen this set instead for the pre-1984 section because I it's a versatile set that will fit both in Castle and Town and has many interesting elements.

2. 6021: Jousting Knights
1984: Such a simple set, yet this set has a great play potential and can give hours of fun with jousts and horse races and sword battles.

3. 6011: Black Knight's Treasure
1985: Slim pickings this year, but this set is fun in a different way. It has enough parts to transform it from being a treasure cart which is fun in its own way, to a steampunk helicopter (with some imagination).

4. 6067: Guarded Inn
1986: Another non-combat set. The design is great of course, but there's also lots to be done here. Get the wrench to cook food on a frying pan in the fireplace and serve it to the knight. Convert the tavern to a cottage for treating the wounded soldiers. Have spies up in the rafters. Burn down the tavern when the fireplace goes havoc. So much to be done!

5. 6049: Viking Voyager
1987: Another slim year. Again, this is the best looking set of the year, but there's more of course. This small set with its large ratio of minifig and spear to pieces means it can be used in interesting ways. Hold a parade with all the flags or even a spear throwing contest (with a minifig as the target).

6. 6039: Twin-Arm Launcher
1988: What's there not to like about a catapult. Unlike previous catapults, this one is lightweight and fires the tiles a relative distance. Lots of playability there.

7. 6245: Harbor Sentry
1989: Another year with a only a few Castle sets. This was the year that the Pirates Theme was launched so if you really can only get one set this year, get this boat with the firing cannon (provided that you are not in North America). The spring loaded cannon shoots quite a large distance.

8. 6059: Knight's Stronghold
1990: Another catapult, but the catapult on its own is not that good. What's good about this set is the wall which is great for target practice!

9. 6812: Grid Trekkor
1991: There's only 1 Castle set released this year. It was another catapult so that can be the default Castle set for the year, if you can only get one. However, you may want to get this set, which is a nice little buggy with a jetpack, which can be so much more fun than yet another catapult.

10. 6075: Wolfpack Tower
1992: This is the largest Castle set on the list so far. There's lots of mystery and adventure to be had with this set, what with the ghost, the hidden treasure, the nooks and crannies where the archers can hide and all the rest of the stuff that goes along with a haunted castle.

11. 1596: Ghostly Hideout
1993: Now you see it, now you don't. This is a nice small set to add to the wolfpack tower of the previous year for even more fun. Two ghosts are definitely better than 1.

12. 6537: Hydro Racer
1994: Another with slim Castle pickings. Any one of those would fit on this list. But if you had money for just one set, get this one! It's black, it's sleek, it's cool and you can use it to do a whacy racers - boat version with the previous few boats, or terrorise the ghosts in the wolfpack tower.

13. 6078: Royal Drawbridge
1995: This set on its one with the rotating bridge is fun. What's more fun is that it can be combined with the previous sets as either an obstacle or a plot device, for example with the boat-racing whacky races concept.

14. 6492: Hypno Cruiser
1996: This is another year that's bad for Castle, but not to worry, Lego created a cross-theme subtheme this year. Time Cruisers are here, and they are supposed to be a bunch of time-travelling adventurers. This set has the forestmen cap and a bunch of other related stuff that could make it fun in the castle world.

15. 6007: Bat Lord
1997: This was the year of the Fright Knights. The sets were very much juniorised and looks blocky. The fright knight with the dragon is a nice small set that can be used in a variety of imaginative ways.

16. 6045: Ninja Surprise

17. 5936: Spider's Secret
1999: Another year of Ninjas - 3051 would be a good set for the year. However, this set with it zany spiders and huge web, and the video camera would guarantee more hours of fun.

18. 6096: Bull's Attack
2000: This list has largely avoided the large sets, but this one is just too great to be missed out. Firing projectiles and catapults and targets and a prison. This is a great fun set.

19. 6720: Tyrannosaurus Rex
2001: Castle sets were halted during the 7 years that Harry Potter sets were in production. There was only the reissue of 6067 this year, but that's already on this list. A great set for the year though, would be any of the Dinosaurs set. This T-rex, for example, will probably give hours of fun terrorising everything else.

20. 3739: Blacksmith Shop
2002: Another year with only one reissue, and this set which was made by a Lego fan. It's huge, it's detailed and there's quite a few things this set can be used for alone and with the previous sets on the list, including target practise, getting haunted and being destroyed by the T-Rex.

21. 7411: Tygurah's Roar
2003: This was the only year since 1984 that there wasn't a Castle Theme set being produced. There was, however, a nice Adventurer's subtheme this year, the Orient Expedition and this is probably one of the most fun booby-trapped set.

22. 8779: The Grand Tournament
2004: Lego still weren't marketing these as "Castle" but they were "Knights' Kingdom" - basically to get around the urban legend that they weren't allowed to produce Castle sets when the Harry Potter license was active. This is a nice update to the joust set, but with wheels. It's good fun to crash these together and to crash them on everything else.

23. 7017: Viking Catapault versus the Nidhogg Dragon
2005: Harry Potter was still going strong, so there wasn't any Castle sets, only Knights' Kingdom (of which 8873 is probably the one with the most fun) and this new theme - Vikings. A catapult firing at a dragon - that's fun. Add that to the previous catapults and dragons = hours of fun.

24. 3828: Air Temple
2006: Knights' Kingdom gave way to Knights' Kingdom II, but it was rather dull. This is the first licensed property on this list! Avatar was based around medieval eastern asian fare and this set, with it's air temple comes with all sorts of goodies for fun.
