BrickList: Redesigned Star Wars Sets
Redesigned Star Wars Sets
This is a list of every Star Wars ship that has been re-made as of 2011. It does not include sets with ships that have been re-released, but not changed (7140 X-Wing as 7142 for example). It also does not include ships that have been repackaged with different or more ships, but not redesigned (7146 Tie Fighter repackaged in 10131 Tie Collection or 7166 Imperial Shuttle in 7264 Imperial Inspection). It will not include mini-scale or midi-scale sets, only system/minifigure. Ultimate Collector Series sets are also omitted, UNLESS they are minifigure scale. Sets redesigned for the Clone Wars TV series are inlcuded. If a ship is part of a larger set (the redesigned AT-ST in the Battle of Endor, for example) it will be inlcuded. The purpose of this list is to assess LEGO's redesigns and determine whether they are improvements or not. It also serves as general reference.

1. 7110: Landspeeder
1999 version.
Redesigned 2 times. The 2010 version is probably the best.
*My first Star Wars set and the only one ToysRus had at the time. Me and my brother each got one that day.

An improvement in design, but the color is wrong. Good for the sandtrooper, Greedo, and Dewback figures, but not much else.

4. 7128: Speeder Bikes
1999 version.
The speeder bike is very common throughout the Star Wars universe and various versions have been converted to LEGO form. 7101 Lightsaber Duel, 7103 Jedi Duel, 7113 Tusken Raider Encounter, 4482 AT-TE, 4483 AT-AT, 7261 Clone Turbo Tank, 7655 Clone Trooper Battle Pack, 7676 Republic Attack Gunship, 8015 Assassin Droid Battle Pack, 8084 Snowtrooper Battle Pack, 7868 Mace Windu's Jedi Starfighter, and Both 2011 Battle Packs all include some variation of this vehicle. The one which is most well-known and remembered is the one that is riden by Scout Troopers (and Luke and Leia) on Endor in Return of the Jedi. It has been released in 5 versions.

5. 7139: Ewok Attack
2002 version.
Utilizes LEGO's newly introduced slope pieces, good set for the minifigs (Ewoks!).
*This same design of the speeder bike was used in several other sets, but with different colors. The 4482 AT-TE has a dark red (republic red) one hidden in it and the 4483 AT-AT has a white one.

6. 8038: The Battle of Endor
2009 version.
The best in my opinion. Most movie accurate and most fun to build.
*7676 Republic Gunship from the previous year has Plo Koon riding a speeder bike with the same design and 8084 Snowtrooper Battle Pack from the following year has one in white instead of brown.

7. 30005: Imperial Speeder Bike
2009 version.
The worst as far as movie accurateness goes. Still a great set for two reasons: cheap way to get stormtroopers and some interesting building techniques utilizing unusual pieces.

8. 7956: Ewok Attack
2011 version.
Looks very similar to the Battle of Endor one, maybe a brick or two is different. I haven't had a chance to build it and the instructions are not up, so I'm not exactly sure what the differences are, if any. Thought I still include it though.
*Interesting note: This set is almost exactly similar to 7139L They both have the same name, they each include two Ewoks and a scout trooper plus a speeder bike, and they both have a trap thingy. But the new one costs twice as much as the old one. What's up with that! You even get a glider thingy and a stormtrooper in the old one!

9. 9489: Endor Rebel Trooper & Imperial Trooper Battle Pack
2012 version.
This 2012 once again includes the perennial speeder bike. It doesn't look like much has changed, but obviously there is a demand for this ship so can you blame them for releasing it every other year?

10. 7130: Snowspeeder
1999 version.
This was my favorite of the 13 original Star War sets (patriotic, right?). It is still my favorite version of the ship even if the color is wrong. The Snowspeeder is one of LEGO's favorite sets to redesign. It has seen 4 incarnations in system scale (I wouldn't be surprised if another is included in the upcoming 2011 set 7879 Hoth Echo Base)

11. 4500: Rebel Snowspeeder
2004 version.
2004 was the year of redesigns, repackages, and mini sets and the Rebel Snowspeeder, being one of the most famous ships from the movies, was bound to be re-done. This one is sleeker looking and done in white, but with the same accesories and figures as the 1999 one (they even almost have the same piece count). I think the 1999 version catches the ragtag rebel feek of the original trilogy movies better.

14. 7140: X-wing Fighter
1999 version.
Arguably the most famous ship from Star Wars. The X-wing has been redesigned only once. The first one is a classic no doubt, but the second version is a definite improvement. The 7140 X-wing was re-released in 2002 as 7142.

15. 4502: X-wing Fighter
2003 version.
This version boasts a larger size, interesting building techniques, and a cool gear system that allows you to "Lock S-Foils in attack position".
*The same ship was repackaged with different minifigs in 2006 as set 6212. 6212 is STILL available (as of May 2011) from shop@home, making it, perhaps, the longest continuously available Star Wars set.

16. 9493: X-wing Starfighter
2012 version.
The third remake of the X-wing. There wasn't much to improve upon, but it looks like they used some of the same building techniques. The transition to attack position is a lot snappier this time (you don't have to turn the gear, it is instant). The blasters are longer and it seems to be more proportionate to the movie version. Also: Porkins and a new astromech droid!

17. 7150: TIE Fighter & Y-wing
1999 version of Y-wing and Darth Vader's TIE
The centerpoint of the 1999 Star Wars line, and the first set to include Darth Vader! Both ships included have been redesigned and improved. It took LEGO a while, though.
*This set has been re-released in 2002 as 7142 and again in 2004 as 7262.

36. 7161: Gungan Sub
1999 version.
The last of the 13 original Star Wars sets to be redesigned. Took them 13 years. How ironic?! This version is cool because you get a little underwater enclave complete with a starfish and clam and even a stingray! It is also cool because you could change the engine out and also divide it into three mini subs (with a little rebuilding). This is a plus that the very early Star Wars sets had: they weren't always movie accurate. Instead they were more true to the spirit of LEGO. They included cool alternate models and other playability features. The downside of this set is its unstability, though. (only the first MTT is more unstable.)

Third time this one has been redone. I think it is safe to say this is the definitive version. The dirty-upped stormtroopers are a nice touch and this classic scene finally comes to life (the 2001 set lacked playability and the version included with the Tantive IV was sort of too small).

78. 9491: Geonosian Cannon
2012 version.
This is splitting hairs, but I'm pretty sure the cannon included in the 2003 Geonosian Fighter set and the one included in this set represent the same thing. This is probably the least essential of the January 2012 Star Wars assortment, but worth it if you want a beefier version of the cannon or a Big-eyed Clone Wars version of Barriss Offee (Come on, no one really wants that, do they?).

To get the whole scene you have to combine with sets 4475 and 4476. This one does have that torturer droid and the new does not. It also has a trapdoor.

Better as far as minifigures go. Also is enclosed and looks similar to the outside of the movie version. But, why no rancor?

105. 7143: Jedi Starfighter
Interesting ship when it comes to redesigns. Rereleased in two classes: Episode II looking version and the Episode III looking version. The Episode II version (Delta Class or something like that) has been released in several different versions for different characters. The color changed between all these keeps it from being a blatant rehash. The Episode III version, conversely, has been released for Anakin (Yellow) and Obi-wan (Red, in a Target exclusive) and also as part of the Jedi Starfighter with Hyperspeed Ring set in Blue as well as in a green version for when Anakin goes to Mustafar and goes ballistic. These three sets are only different in color, but will still be included.

Saesee Tinn, of course! The gold highlights are a nice touch. The $30 pirce tag is not, but I guess it is the figs we're paying for (exclusive figs are how they sale remakes to those who already own the original versions). I look for a new redesign of this one every year
