BrickList: The Best of 2012
The Best of 2012
I've finally gotten a break from midterms to edit this BrickList. Christmas break was much more full then I anticipated and I didn't get a chance to work on this BrickList. Now I'm in for it as lots of sets have come out over the long span of time I haven't updated this BrickList so be ready for a mass-update.
Excludes CMF, Dacta, Duplo, and Gear

2. 4635: Fun With Vehicles
This is by far the best Bricks and More set so far. It has 525 pieces for only $29.99, including two minifigs. All the vehicles make this perfect for a child's first Lego set, or a collector to put on display. The orange brick separator is a great accessory no Lego fan can go without. If you have $30 and don't know what to spend it on, this set would be a great buy.

3. 9486: Oil Rig Escape
There aren't nearly as many Cars sets coming out this year as there were in 2011, so it makes this a much easier selection. It really comes down to this set and the '9485: Ultimate Race Set'. I think this deserves the pick though, as it doesn't just focus on racing, but instead an oil rig which sounds much more intersesting. At $49.99 this may be a nice addition to any Cars' fan's collection.

4. 10223: Kingdoms Joust
Lego is ending Kingdoms on a good note with this set. A while back before Kingdoms started I was really hoping for more sets based on activity inside the kingdom which we really didn't get in 2010, but in 2011 Lego brought in that aspect, and now this really brings the two together. Although I don't own many Kingdoms sets, I would love to have this set on display. This set is a must-have for anyone interested in midieval times, knights, or the Kingdoms line. Coming with 9 minifigs and 1575 pieces for $119.99 I can't see a reason to complain about the price; it's a very accurate price and makes a lot of sense for a set of this caliber.

5. 4440: Forest Police Station
Lego really saved City as now with the new forest sets, they can put a few more years into the idea. This set really brings together the city and forest with a police station. Although it somewhat lacks size, it makes up for that with all the detail. A satellite is a great idea and the 'main floor' of the station seems full of features. Five minifigs, three vehicles, a bear, and a few accessories really fills the set with plenty of 'play-time' and makes it very easy to come up with ways for collectors to display this set. Although being $79.99 for 633 pieces is a big overpriced, I wouldn't argue with the fact that this is one of the best City sets in a while.

6. 7346: Seaside House
This is a great follow-up to the sets of last year. The house in this set seems very nice and has a cool color scheme. I like the return of the Lego peligans as well. This seems like a good set to put on display at a vacation house also. Hopefully this won't exceed $50 as although the design seems appealing, it doesn't look to be that big. Hopefully more will follow.

7. 21102: Minecraft Micro World
Cuusoo seems to be a great idea and look at what can come out of it. Minecraft is arguably the most addictive video game; as is Lego in reference to toys/hobbies. The only problem I have is that the figures aren't exactly 1:1 scale with the rest of the set. It would be nice to have the scenery a little bigger so people could use this to reenact Minecraft in Lego. Overall, it would be nice if Lego came out with more sets to go along with this, but that likely won't happen, so at least we can enjoy this and make MOCs to add onto this.

8. 5887: Dino Defense HQ
This seems like a promising theme. It's been a while since we've had new dinosaur molds come out for Lego and I love the idea of fighting and capturing dinosaurs. The HQ seems really cool, although it does lack size. I think that this set should've been $79.99 instead of $99.99 since it only has 793 pieces and 4 minifigs. All-in-all, it's a high quality, overpiced set. Lego's specialty.

9. 3315: Olivia’s House
I'm only selecting a winner for this theme because there's been a huge lack of female-based Lego themes over the years and they finally have a theme just for girls. This 'house' is great for them to do whatever they choose to do with Legos (which I'm guessing is just purely play with them). With 695 pieces and 3 minifigs, $69.99 sounds like a fair price.

10. 3866: Star Wars: The Battle of Hoth
This sounds like a great set. Heroica was a great line for Lego Games and now with licensed games like this and the '3868: Phineas and Ferb' set, Lego may been in for a big year in Games. As far as this set goes, there's 32 microfigs and 305 pieces.

I think this a great new Furno. He's got great new weapons along with new armor. This is going to be a popular set this year and the price seems fair for the size.

13. 9474: The Battle Of Helm's Deep
I don't know where to begin with this set, it's that amazing. It's got such high quality minifigs and is very movie-accurate. I picked this set for a few obvious reasons. One, it's the biggest set and includes a lot of great features. Two, it's got a good price-per-piece ratio to go along with that. The final reason is because you can combine this with the '9471: Uruk-Hai Army' set for an even bigger battle. So, in a way this set would be $160 if you went along and bought set 9471, but it would include even more pieces which would make it worth it.

15. 9446: Destiny's Bounty
It was really hard to pick out the best set from this theme, and in no way do I mean that in a good way. Lego completely ruined the Ninjago theme giving them 'space ships' and new enemies. I wondered how Lego would rebound off last year and expected way better than this. It seems like a mix between Ninjago, Pharaoh's Quest, and Alien Conquest. If a theme called Alien Ninja ConQuest sounds appealing then go right ahead and drool over these, but if not then forget about it.

16. 9095: Nitro Predator
This seems like Racers 2.0 since they now have minifigs in the sets. I'm not saying these sets are now worth it because they have minifigs, but minifigs make the set seem more real as they are now 'minifig-scale'. At $10 a pop I would not mind owning one or two of these. I couldn't really decide which one to pick so I decided to pick my favorite color :-)

17. 3818: Bikini Bottom Undersea Party
Lego can't seem to make any more good SpongeBob sets. The Flying Dutchman's ship is extremely small and pathetic, but this set isn't much better. The color scheme is way too bright and Squidward's Island Head reminds me of an ice cream sandwich. The whole idea seems a little absurd, and I suggest avoiding this set unless you have a child who loves SpongeBob and doesn't care what the set is as long as it's got SpongeBob in it, or you're an avid collector (even then, I doubt there are many people out there trying to collect the new SpongeBob sets).

18. 9493: X-wing Starfighter
It's nice to finally have a new X-wing. It seems like this year has a lot of Original Trilogy space sets which is great. This set comes with Luke Skywalker (Pilot), R2-D2, R5-D8 (New design), and Jek Porkins. I have the 2007 X-wing, but all it's doing is collecting dust and missing a wing so I'm glad to get a replacement. My best guess is this will be $49.99, but it could be $59.99.

19. 6860: The Batcave
It's great to see Batman back (but this time he brought friends). This set seems really cool even though it has a measly four minifigs (Batman, Robin, Bane, Bruce Wane, and Poison Ivy), it has a lot of cool accessories which makes this an intant classic set in my opinion. I'm looking for this set to be in the range of $79.99-$99.99, but will still be worth the cash.

So maybe Lego can come close to the expectation of last's year Unimog, and it did so with this. What a nice set this is, but will probably be around $199.99.
