1. 8534: Tahu
"Where wisdom and valor fail, all that remains is faith. And it can overcome all."

Toa Mata Tahu was a hot-headed but selfless Toa of Fire. He, along with the rest of his team, was created by Artakha to awaken the Great Spirit Robot, should the need to do so ever occur.

2. 1391: Jala
"Danger is the anvil on which trust is forged."

After being placed into a Matoran Pod, Jala, now known as Jallar, decreased in size and strength. He served as Captain of the Ta-Koro Guard, and was good friends with Takua.
Around the time of the Rebuilding, Jala was renamed "Jallar".

3. 8540: Vakama
"I am Vakama. I am the Turaga of this village. I am the Legend-Keeper, the Takara-Leader, he of the Great Firestaff who farms the Mangai's burning core."

As a Turaga, Vakama was the noble leader of the Ta-Matoran that inhabited Metru Nui. He was very wise, wisdom gained from his time as the Toa Metru of Fire, and was also known for his kind, encouraging words.

4. 8554: Tahnok Va
The Tahnok Va were were the Bohrok Va of Fire, assigned to help the Tahnok in their task of leveling Mata Nui. They were known for their recklessness and speed.

5. 8563: Tahnok
"The fiery Tahnok, capable of melting through any substance..."

The Tahnok were the Bohrok of Fire, assigned with the task of "cleaning" the island of Mata Nui. They were the fastest of the Bohrok, but still understood clearly the value of teamwork. They were easily provoked, and often acted impulsively.

6. 8572: Tahu Nuva
"Only the enemies of Mata Nui have anything to fear from me. I may have changed... but my love for my people has not."

After the end of the battle in which the Toa Mata managed to defeat the Queens of the Bohrok Swarms, Tahu, along with the other Toa in his team, fell into vats of energized protodermis. The strange substance transformed them into more powerful Toa, known as Toa Nuva.

7. 8594: Jaller and Gukko
"Fine, but I won't give up. I'll find the Seventh Toa whether you're the true herald or not!"

During the Rebuilding, Jallar was rebuilt by the Turaga into a larger, stronger, more agile form.
Jallar later was given the task of finding the legendary Seventh Toa. He recruited Takua, the true Harald, to come with him.

8. 8601: Vakama
"Toa aren't killers. If we were, we would have started with you."

Once a Ta-Matoran mask maker, Vakama became a Toa of Fire and leader of the Toa Metru, a role he felt he was not prepared for. This lack of confidence in himself was his chief vice, though he gained self-esteem after his battle with Teridax.

9. 8607: Nuhrii
"I admit it, I've always been jealous of your skill as a mask-maker. I thought that if I turned that special Kanoka disk into a mask, it would outshine anything you had ever done."

Nuhrii was a Ta-Matoran maskmaker. Once Vakama's mentor, Nuhrii was jealous of Vakama's skill, which was much greater than his own. Determined to find fame, he was easily tricked by Ahkmou and sought to find the Ta-Metru Great Disk to forge it into the ultimate Mask of Power.

10. 8621: Turaga Dume and Nivawk
"I'll see this city reduced to rubble ... with not even two bricks still together ... before I let your kind take root here."

Dume was a Turaga of Fire, and the leader of the Metru Nui Matoran. He was noble and courageous, but somewhat stubborn, and he did not often interact with the Matoran, unlike the six Mata Nui Turaga, who shared a bond with them.

11. 8811: Toa Lhikan and Kikanalo
"Do not rely on your memory. Look beyond your history and see what is."

Lhikan was a noble Toa of Fire, and leader of the Toa Mangai. He and his team protected Metru Nui for many years, but eventually he was the last remaining Toa in Metru Nui. As Makuta's power began to overrun the city, Lhikan sacrificed his Toa Power to create the Toa Metru, becoming a Turaga in the process.
He later sacrificed himself to save Toa Vakama's life.

12. 8763: Toa Norik
"Whatever Makuta is planning for the Matoran, it ends now."

Toa Norik was a valiant Toa of Fire, and the leader of Teridax's Toa Hagah team. He and his fellows served as "bodyguards" for Teridax, but upon realizing that the Makuta had turned evil, he and the other Toa Hagah rebelled, and managed to escape their masters.

13. 4877: Rahaga Norik
"Age makes us loud, as well as wise."

Once an elite Toa of Fire and leader of Makuta Teridax's Toa Hagah team, Norik and his team were transformed by the villainous Roodaka into small, twisted beings with Rahkshi heads, which Roodaka cruelly dubbed "Rahaga".
Norik fought the Visorak hordes alongside the Toa Metru/Hordika, and when the Toa transported the Matoran to Mata Nui, he and his team remained behind, to cure the Rahi that had been mutated by Visorak Venom.
Norik, along with the other Toa Hagah, was later transformed back to his original Toa form.

14. 8736: Toa Hordika Vakama
"I lead only those that choose to follow, that's the difference between being a leader and a tyrant like you."

After discovering the island of Mata Nui, the Toa Metru returned to the ruined city of Metru Nui, to fetch the Matoran Pods.
During their absence, however, Visorak hordes had overrun the city, and the Toa Metru were captured and transformed into half-beast, half-Toa versions of themselves, known as Toa Hordika.
Overrun by despair, he later gave in to his beast side, and temporarily became a leader of the Visorak, but he later came to his senses and rejoined his team.
The Toa Hordika were later cured by Keetongu, and transported the Matoran Pods to Mata Nui, where they sacrificed their Toa Power to awaken the Matoran within the pods.

15. 8725: Balta
"We haven't survived this long just to give up."

Balta was a brave Ta-Matoran, skilled with technology, that lived on the harsh island of Voya Nui. He was one of the six Matoran not infected with the Piraka's Zamor Spheres, and became part of the Voya Nui Resistance Team, as well as Garan's right-hand Matoran.

16. 8727: Toa Jaller
"Because it means we are on our own, with no hope of aid. I'm going on, in honor of Tahu Nuva's memory and Lhikan's memory and all other Toa who came before us.
Who else will join me?"

After a long series of adventures, Jaller, along with five other Matoran, were transformed into Toa by lightning from the Red Star. They named themselves the Toa Inika, and Jaller became their leader.
They sought the legendary Mask of Life, but their quest was slowed by the villainous Piraka, former Dark Hunters who sought the Mask for themselves.

17. 8901: Hakann
"Some of his former colleagues said you could not turn your back on him. The truth is, he would happily look you right in the eyes while stabbing you in the back."

Hakann was a Skakdi of Fire, and one of seven former Dark Hunters, known as the Piraka. He was the most unpredictable of the Piraka and was full of spite, which made him unpopular with the other Piraka.
Besides his elemental control over Fire, he also possessed Heat Vision.

18. 8911: Toa Jaller
"Give it up, or some lucky Rahi will be having boiled Barraki for dinner."

The Toa Inika finally managed to find the Mask of Life, but before they could use it, it fell into the Pit, a deep, dark body of water inhabited by twisted villains and an underwater village of Matoran.
The Toa Inika were later transformed by the Mask of Life, and became the water-breathing Toa Mahri. They then continued their quest for the Mask, only this time underwater, and desperately racing against time.
At the end of their long journey, when the heroic Toa of Ice, Matoro, sacrificed himself to save the universe, he also used the Mask to teleport the Toa Mahri back to their home, Metru Nui, and gave them the ability to breathe air as well as water.

19. 8689: Toa Tahu
"Time and experience had made him less a warrior and more a leader of Toa."

While the Toa Inika/Mahri were searching for the Mask of Life, the Toa Nuva were preparing to complete their destiny: awaken the Great Spirit Robot.
They were given Adaptive Armor and Kanohi by the legendary Artakha, and journeyed to Karda Nui, the core of the universe, where they would at last fulfill their destiny.
The Makuta were waiting, and after several clashes and the Final Battle, Mata Nui was at last awakened. The Toa returned in triumph to Metru Nui, only to find that Makuta Teridax was somehow in control of the universe.
Thus began the Reign of Shadows.

20. 8985: Ackar
"If any Glatorian could be considered a living legend, it was he. He was older now, maybe not as fearsome as in centuries past, but when he spoke, other Glatorian always listened."

Ackar was an aging Glatorian, and one of the most famous warriors on Bara Magna. Before the arrival of Mata Nui, he developed a confidence problem, but his friendship with Mata Nui rekindled his old fighting spirit.
He fought alongside Mata Nui in the Skrall War, and with Mata Nui's assistance, was granted control over the element of Fire.
After the defeat of the Skrall, Ackar became head of the united village defense force.

21. 7116: Tahu

During the Battle of Bara Magna, the Mask of Life devolved Tahu into his Toa Mata form so that he could wear and use the Golden Armor.
After Tahu activated the Golden Armor to destroy the armies of Rahkshi, the Armor granted Tahu the Kraata Powers of the Kraata it had destroyed, making him the most powerful Toa in existence, though his elemental power of Fire was decreased.
