BrickList: My top 10 Classic Space sets

My top 10 Classic Space sets

This is my list of my top 10 classic space set that I own. There may be better sets out there and other sets may be regarded differently, but this list is arranged according to nostalgia, sentiment value, design and constructibility and playability.

Created by Novelty. Last updated on 24 Sep 2009.

1. 928: Space Cruiser And Moonbase

10. I'll start off the list with the set that most people would put at #1. Yes, I know this is one of the most classic spaceships ever. However, I never got this during my childhood so it loses points on the nostalgia and the sentiment value. However, the classic build and great design elements places this set on my list.

2. 6803: Space Patrol

9. This was the one set that I've always wanted as a kid but never got it. It was featured prominently on the covers of catalogues and and inside the catalogues as well. The colour scheme is rather appealing and its play value is immense. Thanks to my great desire for it, it piques 928 to 9th place on my list.

3. 6951: Robot Command Center

8. There may be nicer-looking and better constructed classic space robots out there but this set is the forerunner of all the tall robots. Unlike most of the latter day robots (Spyrius, Robo riders, etc.) it features engines instead of wheels There are two smaller craft "stored" on the main model and it's a lot of fun to play with.

4. 6846: Tri-Star Voyager

7. This set epitomises the "escape pod" concept of classic space. The cockpit is actually a small jet that can also be connected to the main body of the bigger jet. Overall, the construction and aesthetics is superb and it earns its place on this top 10 list (over other contenders such as 6826) due in part to this.

5. 6950: Mobile Rocket Transport

6. This set might seem bulky, but thanks to the hinges, it does a great job of being a mobile missile/rocket launcher. It also doesn't hurt that this was one of the first sets (the other being 6880) to feature all-yellow astronauts.

6. 6930: Space Supply Station

5. What's not to like about this set? It's simple and easy to build, but features 4 vehicles, two of which are cool looking flying vehicles. This set is great to role-play exploring, whether it be in general or for minerals, and works as a great search and rescue set as well!

7. 6952: Solar Power Transporter

4. A black astronaut! This set is cleverly designed to consist of a dual-headed vehicle, which thanks to technic parts can be snapped apart and recombined to a number of various other forms.

8. 1593: Super Model Building Instructions

3. One of the harder sets to obtain, I got this for Christmas and was constantly building with it. The jet was interesting, and has an appealing shape. What's more interesting is that the rover, with the manipulating arms could be attached to the rear of the jet and look as if it was a natural part of the jet.

9. 6825: Cosmic Comet

2. It may be a surprise to find this set taking the #2 spot, but I had fun with this set as a kid. Basically, besides the jet form, the set had parts that were great with the construction of mini robots. Aesthetically, the trans-red and yellow tubes goes rather well with the blue of the jet.

10. 6970: Beta I Command Base

1. This was the first ever Classic space set that I got for Christmas and I remember the awe in building the set. That's the main reason why it's #1 on the list, but the playability of the set including the monorail and the jet, and the design (printed bricks, huge radar dishes) doesn't hurt its overall ranking as well!
