    Racers/Speed Racer, 2008
    More details...

The sets are now in the data feed. I picked the yellow/red one up at the weekend in the LEGO brand store in Milton Keynes. It's actually rather good particularly given the price of less than £6 per car (including the 10% Brickish discount). A lot of nice curved pieces and no useless single-use parts.

Ah, thank you for taking in my email.

Posted by Fighter95 in United States, 01 Apr 2008 18:46

Speed Racers looks like a boring theme to me.

Posted by Smallsam99 in United States, 01 Apr 2008 19:32

It does look boring!

Posted by brickemonster in United States, 01 Apr 2008 19:33

Well the movie looks horrible, like the Joel Schumacher's Batman movies. From the trailers it seem to have the same style. Man did those stink up the screen. I hope to find most of these sets in the clearance aisle at Target in a few months. Now the set I wish they would make is a Wall-E from the Disney movie this summer.

Also available at Toys 'R' Us in the UK - well, at my local Basingstoke branch anyway...

I don't think this line is going to be good either.I think that those are going to be the only sets, unless they make a sequel...

Posted by water jedi 17 in United States, 01 Apr 2008 20:23

Already on lego.com the instructions for the spped racer sets are there. You have to type in the item number to find it.The site is http://www1.lego.com/eng/buildinginstructions/Default.asp

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 01 Apr 2008 20:35

I agree with yuh, water jedi 17(on your first comment). It usually takes more than just one movie to get a theme going. I mean, look at Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and Harry Potter: they all have like umpteenmillion sequels and just look at how popular they are.

Posted by The_Best_Fighter, 01 Apr 2008 21:07

I do find it odd they have the movie rights to the series.

However LEGO likes it's racer themes and is clearly running out of ideas for the ones they have so they bought these.

They could always ad a few more $20 sets with different race cars from the movie or the cartoon series.

Posted by hustla187 in United States, 01 Apr 2008 21:29

I agree with Water Jedi 17 and Leggodt. This movie is going to be awful. I actually think the cartoon was better.

Posted by SillyQuack in United States, 01 Apr 2008 22:11

Well, I only like these for the nice figs, and the classic Speed Racer car. I remember the old cartoons. Good times.

Posted by Imperial13 in United States, 01 Apr 2008 22:26

Actually, I think they look o.k. The whole theme is kinda growing on me, and my town needs some sport or another!

Posted by lego12 in United States, 02 Apr 2008 00:31

I think that it will be a BORING theme. The movie looks childish and silly. I wouldn't watch the movie for a $20. They look to expensive and small. The cartoon was pretty good, but a movie about it, come on!

Posted by Luke Skytalker in New Zealand, 02 Apr 2008 00:55

Leggodt, people probably buy those sets because out of the loads of sequels to those movies they've seen, they would probably like a certain scene. But now, Harry Potter seems to be finished and replaced by indy. Lego must have something big planned for replacing star wars, maybe they extended the length of the contract so that they could have more time to get their hands on a new one. Maybe Indy was scheduled to replace star wars but then they extended the contract. I dunno, but this theme probably won't sell well.

Posted by Luke Skytalker in New Zealand, 02 Apr 2008 00:56

Sorry for the double post, but what's with the monkey?

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 02 Apr 2008 05:56

This theme most likely will have disappointing sales numbers. I agree with the group and don't care for how the movie looks and that too will probably have disappointing sales numbers.
The sets themselves look like they might have new, bigger curved parts and that will be a plus for us. I too expect them to be in the clearance aisles at Target before the end of the year and will wait for them to go on clearance befofe I buy them. I just picked up The Knight Impulse set and the Police and Fire Impulse sets at Target for 39 and 99 cents! Target is the best!
I saw the Speed Racer sets at the Toy Fair this year in NY and liked what I saw but I am not sure that this theme will go over well with LEGO fans. The cars look cool and big enough to roll around and play with but I don't think the license is strong enough to support the toys much longer after the initial release of the film.

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 02 Apr 2008 06:11

Are you kidding me? I just checked out all of the Speed Racer sets at the LEGO site and there are 2 sets with Racer X in it! The same exact car in 2 different sets and it isn't even the star car of the movie! I can understand maybe getting a double of a minifig but a double of a car, that is ridiculous and unfair! Bad move on LEGO's part.

i tinhk it wlil be rlealy bnirog.(I was watching braniac and it said as long as it has the first and last letter in a word you can still read it.Try it)

Posted by Commander-Cody in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2008 09:52

You can say these sets will be unpopular, and I agree... Big Time!!! These sets don't even have extra little functions like pull back motors or hidden weapons. They are just the cars themseleves! Do Lego assume we all just want the sets becuase the cars LOOK good?

Posted by SillyQuack in United States, 02 Apr 2008 10:52

Well, the monkey was in the classic cartoons, yes, I know this theme will not sell very well, but think on the bright side. The cars would be great in a city if you had a car show, You could make older NASCAR cars. And sometimes, you just end up buying the sets from a bad movie because you LOVE legos. Look at me, I have all the Indy sets, even thought I've only seen the first movie. (which was sweet!)

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 02 Apr 2008 17:11

Leggodt,
There will be a great VW Bug set coming out later this year. It is set number 10187. Look it up on Brickset. It looks great and is built using dark blue and light blue pieces. I don't know how much it will cost but let's hope it is near what you are willing to pay for a Cadillac set in your previous post!

Colonel Graff
Welcome to Brickset! It is a great site with tons of info on our favorite building brick. There are a lot of great LEGO fans here. Welcome!

Posted by Commander-Cody in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2008 17:14

I welcome you too Colonel graff. Always good to see a new bricksetter appear on the website. Its a shame unlike Eurobricks that there aren't enough extra threads for your introductions though. I'll look at your profile

NEWSFLASH NEWSFLASH NEWSFLASH
The Speed Racer sets are now on UK Shop at home as preorders for 14th April!!!!!!! :):):)

Speed Racer & Snake Oiler and Racer X and Taeko Shakogun (whatever)= £12.99! (cheap)
Cruncher Block and Racer X = £24.99 (OK, rubbish truck)
Grand Prix = £34.99 (wow, I might actually buy these sets!)

Posted by Loganwan in United States, 02 Apr 2008 20:27

The bigger sets were at the Toys R Us near me in California. They have a gigantic display for Speed Racer with all of the different toys that are out. They only had the big sets though. The smaller $20 sets had a price tag, but no product. The race set looks good, with 8 minifigs, but the truck looks like garbage. It looks way too tall, and missing sides, and what is up with the people not having hair?

Posted by water jedi 17 in United States, 03 Apr 2008 00:31

Speed racer seems more like a subtheme of lego racers than a theme of it's own, like indy sets. Most likely Lego needed more $ and got the contract for speed racer sets

Posted by LuvKernow in United Kingdom, 03 Apr 2008 11:13

The only thing I shall be buying the £12.99 sets for, is the windscreen as so I can make a proper looking Landspeeder.

That is all.

M.

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 03 Apr 2008 14:53

Ummm water jedi 17, speed racers is a subtheme, and the sets are on the lego website right now. That stinks that huw deleted some of my comments, but I was getting a little off-topic there. *sigh* Oh well, I guess I'll save some of my ideas for another day.

Posted by Commander-Cody in United Kingdom, 03 Apr 2008 16:21

Apparently Cruncher Block tries to fix the race every time is is raced, and Racer X isn't completely evil, becuase he tries to stop him. The reason Racer X and Taejo are in 1 set is becuase they team up, but then taejo is captured by Cruncher Block. "WhatHappenedToMyBargain.IKeptMyEndOfTheDealNowYouMustKeepYours."
That is made up but why do they always speak so fast and weirdly?

Posted by legoville410 in United States, 03 Apr 2008 17:43

Yes they do look stupid but why does lego think they can make a profit off of these? Oh, and welcome to Brickset Colonel Graff.

P.S. does anybody have an Exact date for the release of Coast Guard Sets?

Posted by lego12 in United States, 03 Apr 2008 18:10

Welcome Colonel Graff,
Brickset is awesome since I found it in the beggining of March. It is a wonderful place to look at new and old lego sets! It is the best lego website other than Lego.com.

Posted by SillyQuack in United States, 03 Apr 2008 23:34

Yes welcome Graff. Well anyways, if they don't get the sails they want from the movie, I bet they could make sets from the original cartoon.

Posted by mastermind in United Kingdom, 04 Apr 2008 05:13

The Grand prix is £34.99 in the U.K,£12.99 for the Speed racer and snake oiler,£12.99 for racer X and a japenese racer, and £24.99 for the Cruncher Block And Racer X.Which I think,(for once)are very good pricing, usally there really expensive!

Posted by mastermind in United Kingdom, 04 Apr 2008 05:16

Welcome to Brickset Colonel Graff! It's got lots of info on LEGO sets, past, present AND Future!Hope You enjoy it!

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 04 Apr 2008 19:14

Hey, guys, not to seem rude, Colonel Graff, but when you guys post a comment that contains a "Welcome to brickse, Colonel Graff!", please make sure that it also contains some information that is actually relative to the topic. Like I said before, I'm not trying to seem rude.

ANYWAYS! Well, sillyquack, I'm sorry to say that LEGO may not get the sales they want because the movie looks STUUUUUPID! I'm probably not gonna see it unless I get talked into it.

Posted by SillyQuack in United States, 04 Apr 2008 20:36

Yes, that IS what I SAID (mimicry. I SAID if they don't get the sales they want they could make sets from the cartoon.

Posted by tanadlia, 05 Apr 2008 06:54

I thik action themes are great. This looks dumb!!!>:(

Posted by Commander-Cody in United Kingdom, 05 Apr 2008 15:41

You do know mastermind, that I posted the sets' information about 15 comments up from here...

But at least this makes it more likely to be heard by the public!
I wish the Racers in these sets would have visors on their helmets (only Racer X has 1) because they look pretty stupid without them. I mean, you could always lift the visors up!

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 05 Apr 2008 17:35

Nope! I'm hardly paying attention to what you guys are saying about the prices(mostly because the prices are in euros). I think I'll make my final ON-TOPIC remark on this article by saying that I will most likely not be getting any of these sets. First of all, I'm still waiting for the new summer 2008 Star Wars sets(NOW, DON'T START TALKING ABOUT THE NEW STAR WARS SUMMER 2008 SETS JUST BECAUSE I SAID THAT!!!!!), and secondly, out of all the LEGO Racers sets, I would have to say that I think that the Power Racers are the coolest and the only ones that ever interest me. Bye for now! :)

Posted by Luke Skytalker in New Zealand, 05 Apr 2008 18:35

Continuing Leggodt's comment, the star wars sets - Hehe! I mean I will not be buying these sets either because I don't like racing and I think that this is designed for younger builders, ie the kids that like to drive cars back and forth along the carpet. I am completelyt broke as well, so I will start being more carefull about my purchases.

Posted by SillyQuack in United States, 05 Apr 2008 19:03

I do have to say these are not made for younger builders. They are not juniorized. (at least in the $20.00 sets)

Posted by Smallsam99 in United States, 06 Apr 2008 16:57

I think these sets are a waste of time and lego star wars is worth getting instead. I mean have you seen the new characters they have made!

Posted by SillyQuack in United States, 06 Apr 2008 17:57

Yes, I just bought these to add to my collection. The movie does look sort of annoying after I saw the preview 5 times.

Posted by water jedi 17 in United States, 06 Apr 2008 23:26

I've noticed that there isn't much of a variety of colors inthe sets, with yellow being the most common, then white. Also, why hasn't anybody revied the crusher block set?In my opinion the Crusher block lacks pieces in the back, there's not even a roof like in the movie!

Posted by Commander-Cody in United Kingdom, 07 Apr 2008 16:07

Isn't that the whole point water jedi 17? I mean, leaving the roof out of the back adds playability, but at the same time makes it look stupid if you're not using the inside of the truck. Why didn't they use one of their ferrari set ideas for a truck roof?

Also, why do the cars in the grand prix set look like they're meant for an electric racing track, like Scalextric? The others sets' cars don't!

Posted by water jedi 17 in United States, 07 Apr 2008 21:05

Maybe the crusher block should come with a removeable roof. That way it would look better and you could play inside it. Recently I saw the newest trailer for speed racer and I noticed that Racer X's helmet only covered half of his face(eyes, forehead), unlike the lego version, which covers the whole face.

Posted by Smallsam99 in United States, 08 Apr 2008 12:26

Crusher block is lame. Let's just keep it as that.

Posted by Commander-Cody in United Kingdom, 08 Apr 2008 12:48

Well, I must admit at least the truck cab and hidden missile are pretty cool. Shame it comes with a copy of racer X and a freaking rubbish cab!!!

Posted by Commander-Cody in United Kingdom, 08 Apr 2008 12:49

Woops, I mean the trailer in the 2nd sentence. (if only i could edit my post...)

Posted by Luke Skytalker in New Zealand, 08 Apr 2008 14:29

I would rather have the ability to edit reveiws. A hidden missile in the truck? That would be pretty cool, but then the truck would probably loose it's interior.

Posted by bigz123 in United States, 10 Apr 2008 21:57

oh god speed racersa. the old cartoon show. No. I don't think these themes can get any lower...

Posted by BlackRabbit in Canada, 15 Apr 2008 19:55

SPEED RACERS LOOKS LIKE A CRAPPY THEME BUT I MABYE WILL GET ONE SET

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 15 Apr 2008 22:24

I agree with yuh completely on EVERYTHING that you said in that comment right before this one.

Posted by bigz123 in United States, 17 Apr 2008 19:35

The sets are horrifing and I am going to have night terrors

Posted by SillyQuack in United States, 17 Apr 2008 22:43

Okay, what I'm wondering is why are all of you hating the sets just because the movie doesn't look good. Sheesh.

Posted by BlackRabbit in Canada, 18 Apr 2008 00:35

i dont like a handful of the cars and the ones i like are in the grand prix set witch i cannot afford, also the one with the truck looks poorly designed

Posted by SillyQuack in United States, 18 Apr 2008 11:19

Well I agree a semi with no roof stinks. Well the grand prix is greatly designed.

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 18 Apr 2008 18:14

Saw the Speed Racers sets at Target today. It looks like there are some new parts in these sets. Will check peeron to see what parts are included that are in deed new. The open truck is poorly designed and both $20 sets have a the same Speed Racer car which is weak. The minifig designs are cool as are the windshield parts and the new? mudguards on the cars. Again, I will wait for these sets to go on clearance at Target and pick them up for 30-90% off.

Posted by Smallsam99 in United States, 19 Apr 2008 10:30

They all look a a load of junk!

Posted by Fighter95 in United States, 20 Apr 2008 16:52

I couldn't agree more!

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, 21 Apr 2008 11:52

I don't hate them, they do look quite good actually. I won't get any, not cause i think they're rubbish, but because they're not the kind of thing i'm into. And people saying the truck is rubbish cause theres no side wall, how'd you know its not like that in the film? Thats the problem with Liscensings, if the sets bad, usually its because its the closest lego could get to the 'real thing', and so instead of getting credit for making the sets very realistic, the fact that the design in the movie is rubbish makes them think the set is rubbish.

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 21 Apr 2008 15:29

Interesting point, legoguysw. Very interesting.

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, 23 Apr 2008 11:19

What do you mean by that?

Posted by Luke Skytalker in New Zealand, 23 Apr 2008 15:29

The point you made in your last comment. I think you were saying that its the movie that's rubbish not the sets.

Posted by Smallsam99 in United States, 23 Apr 2008 16:21

To me they both look like rubbish! I think the only part I could use is the chairs and windsheild but why pay 20.00 for that?

Posted by Luke Skytalker in New Zealand, 24 Apr 2008 18:11

Saw these at toyworld two days ago. Also saw a mobile devistator on clearance! Not enough money, though, sadly.

Posted by BlackRabbit in Canada, 04 May 2008 22:21

i just seen the trailer for the movie and it looks like it sucks

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 11 May 2008 23:08

Well, I just saw the movie, and, surprisingly, I liked it a lot. Racer X is my favorite! I think that LEGO made a wise investment in this franchise. Keep up the good work LEGO! ;)
