  • Breaking news - Cardiff Store 'Grand Opening Event' ...

Posted by bluemoose, 18 Feb 2011 13:36. Filed under Shopping (UK).

We've just heard some bad news for collectors about the Cardiff store 'Grand Opening Event' this weekend ... we're not entirely sure what's going on, but while the 'Grand Opening Event' is going ahead, we've been told that LEGO have decided not to proceed with the exclusive model give-away as part of the event. We're not sure of the reason, but we'll let you know if we find out what's going on.

This is especially annoying as we've been trying to promote the event in the AFOL & collector communities. As far as we know, the Westfield 'exclusive' is going ahead as planned next weekend.

So just to reiterate, the Cardiff 'Grand Opening Event' is going ahead, but the original exclusive model isn't going to be part of the give-aways during the weekend. If you go, please let us know your impressions :-)

Isn't this it (from the lego store website) 'Plus the first 300 customers to shop for £20 on each of the 3 days will receive a 'limited edition' LEGO minifigure t-shirt with purchase exclusively designed for the opening days. '???

So if there's no exclusive model, is the grand opening any different to any other day the store is open?

@LegoCoastGuard - those words have been there for weeks; the model has only been pulled in the last day or so.
@atkinsar - as we understand it, there will be a small 'regular' set given away instead. There will also be other activities & give-aways over the weekend.

Disappointed. I certainly won't bother going now. Hopefully they will run another special event there shortly with an exclusive giveaway.

Wasn't it going to be the Welsh dragon? And haven't I heard before about the Welsh Tourist Board giving people a hard time for using that image? Maybe that was the problem.

Yes, it was a version of the Welsh Red Dragon. Hadn't heard about the Welsh Tourist Board being so protective of the image, but that sounds like a possibility for why it got pulled.

This is not good as I was planning on taking time off work this morning and spending a fair bit. If you are going, park in the John Lewis car park (closest) or on Bute Street for free if you don't mind a short walk.
On a positive note, there are loads of white Bobas in Smyths for those making the journey to Cardiff over the weekend.

I'm going sunday regardless of free give aways and also going to Smyths for White Boba's gonna try and get a few of them just so i can keep one and open one, not sure about selling them later on but will see what i can afford in store on the day. Was also thinking of Diagon alley but will see, it is a very nice set.

Anyone that was planning to go, and might now be having 2nd thoughts, I'd recommend still going; I think you'll still have a fun time :-)

My problem is I'm torn between getting things at the LEGO Westfield Grand Opening or that very tempting Tesco 20% off deal. I might just split it 50/50 since I really want 1 or 2 of those London Buses but also want to save money.

That sucks, sorry my British mates.

Well if it was down to WTB pressure they just cost Wales a visitor from over the border who was going to have a weekend in Cardiff with my wife and son...FAIL

Well, got a free T-Shirt and a lot of pictures of dragons. Got the pictures in my brickshelf (when moderated, link is in my profile) My friend knows a staff member so I might have a chance at snagging some instructions from the event (he seems the type of chap who would keep hold of some).

The 7805-1: Shark was the free set, as per the promotion on the calander.

I went to Cardiff today, they were giving away t-shirts, and 10% discount if you participated in the building event.
they had welsh dragon's their but I couldn't get one but they gave me instructions for it, they said they were giving them away on the 1st of march (St. Davids Day).

I was just double-checking the Westfield details and found the following at http://stores.lego.com/en-us/London/events.aspx :
"Plus the first 300 customers to shop for £20 on Saturday will receive a 'limited edition' LEGO minifigure t-shirt…"
"The first 300 customers to shop for £20 on Sunday will receive a unique and exclusive LEGO London Bus mini model."
So I'll be going on Sunday, but for those who'd rather a t-shirt to a bus, make sure to go on Saturday.

Are they giving away the free model tomorrow as suggested above? Nothing on the LEGO website...
