Maersk train finally announced

Glad they finally 'released' the information. Very much looking forward to this one. Not surprised about the $159 CAN price... (though wish it was closer to the US price... might need a trip down there some time).

This should be an easy switch to a 9V motor...

£91.99 seems a good price for the train, but it'll cost another £80 odd+ to motorise it if you need:

LEGO Power Functions 8878 Rechardgeable battery - £42.99
8887 Transformer 10V DC - £19.74
8884 Power Functions IR Receiver - £11.49
Power Functions IR Speed Remote Control 8879 - £10.99 and
88002 Power Functions Train Motor £??

Not sure what you need exactly but it looks a but steep to me.

Also @ the Brickset team, the City trains from 2006-2011 do not show in the trains theme, only the city trains sub theme, is this intentional, as I cound't find what I was looking for until I realsied, might be better to have them in both? :)

$119? That's far better value than I could have hoped for. I was thinking $130- $150. That makes the choice between this and the Emerald night a tough one..
In the images you can clearly see what looks like a glass or plastic shelf underneath the train. Hmm, I think I prefer the plain white. But they still look okay, for the most part.

I believe I heard about a release date of April 1, although I'm not sure whether that's for Europe, North America, or worldwide.

The glass that the model sits on is dirty. I swear I saw some masking tape, too. Perhaps that's intended. Anyway, it's a neat model.

This train looks great. I still like the Emerald Night slightly better but if I had the space and funds I'd get both trains. My guess of $175 CDN is not too far off. I'm glad the set is slightly cheaper than I thought it would be. I like the new photo style but I found the reflective surface a bit distracting as it draws attention away from the train itself. With the old style photos, a plain white background (and no marble table), the set is the focus of the viewers attention not the set's reflection on the table.

I'm not sure, but maybe they just haven't properly finished photoshopping them yet. I believe I saw an advance image of 8043 last year with a similiar technique.

Either way, I'm glad this is not motorised (hence cheaper) as I do not collect trains and have no room for a layout, but I like this model and maybe would buy a few pieces of track to display it on.

The pictures are nice. But I don't like stickers, especially not if they have to be on more then one brick. And if I (can not) apply the front shield sticker it's just looks like a regular black and blue train.

$119 sounds about right. I figured they would not match the Emerald Night pricing, considering it comes with the truck, etc. Still - this is going to make a mint. Got to start saving up...

Finally, this set got officially annonced. I was really afraid that this set might be a Maersk Emplyee exclusive. Looking at the Canadian price of $159.99, and the American price of $119.99, I might drive out to the US to buy one of these. Since the American and Canadian dollar are very close, I'll save a couple bucks.

I'm going into the states over March break! I'm kind of happy they didn't add the motor pieces because that makes it a lot cheaper for buyers. Besides the train buyers already own some of that stuff... can't the controllers do more than one train anyway!? The non-train buyers who just happen to like this model (me) probably don't intend to run its motor anyway. I'm really happy with the price (well the one in the USA) so if my summer list shortens any then I'll add this set to it.

My Guess is the Maersk set will be available for some time.. but I believe this set is going to take the Emerald Night's 'Slot' in the Lego Lineup, meaning that The Emerald Night is on borrowed time (that is if Lego hasn't already stopped manufacturing these)

I like the use of the garge 'slot' bricks on the containers.. I think this is a pretty nice set for 119 USD.. My guess is these will be very sold out at the store in the first hour and back-ordered online indefinitely...

The set looks great. I will most certainly be purchasing 2. I'm not sure how many of you know Maersk's history, but Lego added some Easter Eggs into the set! Look at the License plates on the trailer and truck.

The truck plate reads APM 1904 = Maersk is known as the A.P. Moller Maersk Group and it was founded in 1904.

The trailer plate reads ML 1928 = The company purchased 5 new ships and was renamed Maersk Line in 1928.

I'm not sure if that was pointed out yet, but it is an interesting bit of history incorporated into this beautiful set!

It looks AMAZING. And $119 US is better than I thought it'd be. Of course, here in Australia, we're paying about twice as much. So I'm a little bit worried about what the mark-up is going to be (given that the Aussie dollar is right now *better* than the US dollar, we should be paying less, but that's a whole 'nother story). I'm predicting about $150, the same price as Emerald Night. Which would be better than expected. But no, I absolutely want this train. It looks awesome.

After first seeing photos of this set, I was actually expecting a much higher price, so I am VERY happy to see it listed at $120 USD. At that price, I'll definitely be purchasing more than one!!

As for the photos - I think the image quality is good and they allow for a lot of detail. However, as previously mentioned, the clear glass table should never have been visible (especially if these are official images from LEGO).
(And I totally agree with DavidGraham's comment about the LEGO Motto!)

In my opinion, this is one of the best looking and most realistic LEGO train sets ever made!

I can't wait to get my hands on this set and actually put it together! It will look great on display with all my other LEGO Maersk sets!

For me, this set is a definite highlight out of all of the sets announced for 2011 thus far. It'll be interesting to see if there ever will be a Maersk airliner set produced at some point in the future...

@9vandStarWarsfanboy - Thank you for sharing that piece of trivia regarding the "Easter Eggs" hidden within the license plates on the truck and trailer.

@Zordboy - Unfortunately, it seems that Australians have historically always paid more for their LEGO sets, and it seems every year that this is a trend that the LEGO Group won't be changing... I quietly hope that this will change one day, but at the end of the day, the LEGO Group is out to make money, and it seems us Aussies are bearing the brunt of this...

@LegoCity578 - LEGO has produced American trains before. Some of the American trains modeled by the LEGO company that come to mind include the Santa-Fe Super Chief (sets 10020, 10022 and 10025), the BNSF GP-38 locomotive (set 10133), and the TTX Intermodal Double-Stack Wagon (set 10170).

@jpmanalo - Actually, Maersk Air was sold early in 2005 to a corporation in Iceland, so I doubt we will ever see a Maersk Airliner. On a separate note, seeing that this train is Power Functions ready, I might even start to convert to PF. As of now, I only run on 9v, but with the cost, I don't know how much longer I'll be able to afford it. I'll have to check how much it will be to get this train up and running with PF.

I let out a huge sigh of relief when I saw that $119 US price. There was an underlying fear that it would cost considerably more since this set seems so much better than the Maersk container ship (same price). Now that the price has been announced and is very reasonable, I believe this set has cemented itself at the top of my 2011 list of Lego purchases.

I am certainly impressed by all the features (the visible Deisel engine, and cabin for the engineer), and glad to see it uses the train motor not the normal power functions motor like the Emerald Night. I like the EM and appreciate why they used the rotory motor and technics wheels and cogs, but the sound of the movement can be annoying especially on a tight track that you don't want it to move quickly around (aka Christmas tree).
I liked the reflective glass (although not the smudges), I thought it allowed you to see more angles. More pictures is always better.
I was so excited about getting it (or two) that I immediately went to Lego.com to try and order and was disappointed that it was not showing up when searched for. You did not mention availability until the comments section... but it made me read all of them. Interesting Easter Eggs @9vandStarWarsfanboy. I would imagine that the battery box replace the Diesel engine if you motorize it, and the IR receiver will insert into the empty space there between the engine and the cabin, with the train motor obviously underneath. I guess I will have to get two in order to show off the deisel engine on the second. Oh well, there goes all of our Lego VIP points for the year (good thing the wife was disappointed in Daigon Alley when it came out (not much to the building as far as detail). I just hope it is not an April fools joke.

I guess I will also have to get two sets of lights for it since it has four, two below in front and two in the top by the cabin (hope they all have holes at back and are reachable).
I remember trying to motorize Hogwarts Express and having a heck of a time getting the light cables to run through the body and it still go back together. I almost had to build another car and make it the engine instead.
Hope they provide alternate instructions for motorizing it like they did with Emerald Night, my wife almost had a heart attack when I started removing parts to motorize it for her.

According to Brickset, The Emerald Night was released April 1st, 2009. To me, it's obvious that this set will replace EN on the shelves at the LEGO store, so if you don't have an Emerald Night set yet, I suggest you go buy one now. I am going to get mine in the next few days, because it's possible that production on the EN has ceased already, and they are making the new Maersk Train sets to be on shelves April 1st, 2011.

Only two container cars? So I have to spend $250 to get a train with four cars (minimum for a train to look even vaguely 'realistic') and have an extra engine. Then motorize it? Then get the tracks? Yes I know some people already have big track sets but for the new people the price of entry for a motorized train with some tracks is entering the LGB trains realm! Sorry, don't mean to be a debbie downer but I wish LEGO would sell cars separately. I already spent $300 to have (only) three passenger cars on my EN set with one or two more to come - hopefully the EM will be on sale someday. Otherwise I too look forward to this release. Cheers.

@faster345: I am guessing that what will occur is that people will be buying these and selling the cars and engine separately, so you will probably be able to get the extra cars. (that is how I got my extra carriages for the EN)

I see they have not put it in to the Search function yet though. I went to shop.Lego.com and typed Maersk in search and all that shows up is the container ship. If you go to the Train theme though it is there finally. Looking forward to April (Series 4 minifigs and Maersk train!) At least with modern trains two engines is normal.

New to the "Train" theme, can anyone tell me is this train compatible with other Lego 9V tracks? What is the "9V tracks"? like #7499, #8867? I checked the other models, i.e. #7938 Passenger train and #7939 Cargo train, they both have the description "tracks not compatible with Lego 9V trains, train is compatible with Lego 9V tracks". Thank you in advance for any information.

@ Xena6296: The new trains can use the old 9 volt track as well.
Lego just means that the new track will not work with 9 volt trains due to the fact 9 volt trains use electrified track, at least the track had metal on the rails that can carry current through it to power the 9 volt train motors ... the new track has no power rails therefore cannot be used with the 9 volt motors (or rather it can, just no current can go through the new track to power the 9 Volt trains)
Like NCBarrett says, same gauge, but the new track has no power rails...
