Another Architecture set on the way

Several eagle-eyed Brickset visitors emailed to say that the Architecture site at LEGO.com has been updated with a teaser image of set 21009 which is being launched in April. Does the small section that's not under wraps give any clues as to what it is? Take a look and see if you can guess. (thanks sdpevrin, attisb and zaxter)

Update: member Shadow Crawler has identified it as being the Farnsworth House which you can read a bit about here. I reckon he could be right!

Maybe an Airport? Kinda looks like a runway.

Posted by Modok in United States, 15 Mar 2011 18:29

Clearly, it's the Sydney Opera House but shaped differently and with an overhang thing. Very clever, Lego.

Posted by hssky97 in United States, 15 Mar 2011 18:40

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts?

Posted by nadnerb112 in United States, 15 Mar 2011 18:47

I think its a harbor. I see a dock.

Posted by Shadow Crawler in Indonesia, 15 Mar 2011 18:52

It's the Farnsworth building

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 15 Mar 2011 18:59

It certainly isn't a UK landmark, still waiting for the Houses of Parliament or if the designers fancy a challenge, the London Eye.

Posted by vpustote in United States, 15 Mar 2011 19:00

I think Shadow Crawler is right... the building obviously has four pillars and stairs which matches the Farnsworth building almost perfectly.

Good catch Shadow Crawler! The name means nothing to me, but a quick Google search throws up this http://www.busyboo.com/2007/12/16/modern-architecture-design-farnsworth/ which does indeed look like it.

I agree with Shadow Crawler -its the Farnsworth building(i had no clue what it was until I saw pics)

Someone on Flickr has made their own LEGO Architecture set of The Farnsworth House. You can see it here:

You can definitely see the direction they are taking with modernist architecture - it makes sense, the more angular minimalist styles give them more options to make a quality model at a good price point.

While I would love to see something baroque or gothic (cathedrals would be sweet) - my budget doesn't really have room for a set with the piece count it would take to do them justice.

Ugh...why would anyone buy this. Can't they work on a bit more famous landmarks/buildings?

Posted by Schmopiesdad in United States, 15 Mar 2011 21:22

I can appreciate the comments of serviceburo; however, I have a different opinion. Modernist or Post-Modernist architecture is too easy for LEGO. It ends up looking simplistic. The beauty of LEGO, from my limited perspective, is the element of surprise. The ability to recreate less angular or organic forms with small blocks and custom adaptations is the brilliance of LEGO. Try the Sydney Opera House or even a classic like Notre Dame to draw interest and sales. Ultimately, the buildings of Colonial Williamsburg would be a brilliant partnership.

Should be great... cool house. But I'd like to know how it'll work.

Posted by Morgan19 in United States, 15 Mar 2011 23:13

Although I can understand its niche appeal, perhaps to those in the field, the overall bland Architecture line (and its oddly high prices) has certainly never piqued my interest... And this building done in brick is definitely NOT going to change my opinion any time soon. >_<

Thanks guys, but I don't deserve full credit. I have been previously informed by a very reliable source that the Farnsworth will be an Architecture set (by the way, he also mentioned that there will be a Burj Khalifa set this year :)).

I wonder why LEGO don't make a WTC Twins in this serie? This year is 10th Aniversary of September 11th so this Architecture model would be nice LEGO memorial.

Posted by Eric Malboeuf in Canada, 16 Mar 2011 08:23

As an architect, I instantly recognized this model as Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House in Plano Il. A much better choice that the White House or Rockefeller Center in terms of architectural influence.

Anatyt - I don't think memorials of infamously destroyed buildings is quite the direction Lego wants to go.

Posted by nightfury in United States, 16 Mar 2011 11:39

Found this through google image search: http://izzyloves.blogspot.com/2011/01/lego-architecture-x-mies-van-der-rohe.html

Posted by Anatyt in Slovakia, 16 Mar 2011 12:13

nightfury: Yes but that's not the LEGO set. Only MOC or render. Compare it with this one: http://architecture.lego.com/en-us//Products/Architect/21009.aspx

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 16 Mar 2011 13:42

@nightfury - that's a MOC, by prolific German AFOL Thomas Oechsner

I agree with Eric. Another Frank Lloyd Wright set (other than Fallingwater) would be really cool. How about some Usonian house (like the Rosenbaum house) or the Susan Dana Thomas house. Fully furnished interiors would be AWESOME too.

Posted by Seagull in United States, 16 Mar 2011 18:57

The Twin Towers would be very nice, as would another F.L. Wright. This set should be cool. And, this house is in IL! I'll look into this house, maybe visit it over spring break. :)

Kudos to Shadow Crawler for his great detective work.

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 17 Mar 2011 12:41

Wow... Out of everything they could do they picked a very plain house.

Posted by mathmatt88 in United States, 17 Mar 2011 20:12

I hope it's not the Farnsworth House. That thing is as ugly as sin...

Posted by Sky-guardian in United States, 17 Mar 2011 22:07

^i agree
I think it is that house though. you can tell if you examine the porch thingy...(Can't figure out how they expect to get money out of that thing...)
