Awesome Huw, the headress on Achu really comes alive at magnification.

Awesome theme.

The character labeled as Sam Sinister seems to be inaccurate. In the adventure sets I have, the character labeled as Baron von Barron is named Sam Sinister. I do not, however, know the actual name of the top hatted character mislabeled Sam Sinister. Maybe characters are named differently over in the UK, because I could have sworn that Max Villano's name was actually Rudo Villano.

sudorum-Adventurers was the second LEGO theme to have all characters named. The names were also different between countries and years.
f.e. In the UK
1998:Gail Storm
2000:Pippin Reed

In the US
1998:Linda Lovley/Pippin Reed/Pippin Read
2000:Pippin Reed

Achu had a cape. There should be front and back photos of him wearing it.

Posted by sudorum in United States, 24 Mar 2011 16:47

Berrybrick-what was the first theme to have all characters named? I thought that Adventurers was the first.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 24 Mar 2011 16:53

^^ So he did... I've just found it, too. I'll re-photograph him with it later.

Thanks for yet another great Minifig Gallery Huw! These pics seem better than ever! Are we gonna have a vote on the next gallery?

Just me nitpicking about the names again.

I still say that Charles Lightning, Gail Storm, Baron von Barron, and (NOT Lord) Sam Sinister should also be alternatively identified by their current names: Dr. Kilroy, Pippin Reed, Lord Sam Sinister, and Slyboots.

Additionally, Max Villano is also very commonly known as Rudo Villano, and between the two names I've actually seen "Rudo" in catalogs, books, video games, etc. but very rarely seen "Max". Since Rudo appears to be the more common of the two names, shouldn't he go by that name?

Alas, the Adventurers theme is very confusing when it comes to names.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 24 Mar 2011 18:16

The names certainly are inconsistent and different depending where you look. In the UK 1998 and 1999 catalogues, Johnny Thunder is called 'Sam Grant', the Baron 'Evil Eye' and Sr. Palomar 'Senor Gomez'. However, Max Villano is named 'Max Villano'.

In the 2000 one the name Johnny Thunder is used for the first time.

I'm going to stick with the BrickLink names unless pointed at a more definitive official source.

Great job, Huw! Loving these galleries to death!

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 24 Mar 2011 19:49

Okay guys, so Lego is obviously very inconsistent, but what were these galleries made for? Huw's taking photographs so that we can have nice, crisp, and clear pics. They're not for perfect names...

Posted by SJPlego in United States, 24 Mar 2011 20:16

@Jarod98: The issues arise with Orient Expedition, specifically the Lord Sam Sinister character. Would he stick Lord Sam Sinister in with "Baron von Barron" or "Lord Sam Sinister"? Because Lord Sam Sinister is clearly meant to be the same character as "Baron von Barron/Evil Eye/Mr. Hates". True, the photographs are more important than the names, but these galleries are also about organization and convenience, and Adventurers is one of those themes that tries throwing a monkey wrench into organizing characters by name.

I'm all for listing all the alternative names for the characters.
I feel Huw's making THE definitive database for minifigures so for a guy like me who comes here for accurate descriptions, clear photos to help with my collection and collecting, I'd like as thorough a database as possible.
Same goes for the Collectable Minifigures. I'd like to see the official names (and non ones too) used which lessens confusion for the collector searching for a particular figure all around the net.
Trust me...as a fan, I appreciate ALL the hard work Huw's put into this but I feel it needs to be as accurate as possible, names included.
Also, I'd love to see turnarounds, especially if a figure has a duel face and the accessories too. I love Brickset to be my one stop definitive source for all things LEGO.

Sam Sinister lost a hand somewhere in the jungle, didn't he? Because IIRC he had a hook, instead of a hand, by the time the Adventurers cast wound up on Dinosaur Island.

Top yellow box reads "Every minifig from 1998 sets". Needs updating.

Huw, I'd like you include photos of these three minifigs in the Adventurers gallery, if you have the parts:

http://www.brickset.com/minifigs/browse/?Page=4&theme=Adventurers

Also, you've broken the link near the bottom of the minifig browser page:

http://www.brickset.com/minifigs/browse/

by mis-spelling "adveturers" (sic).

@legodad, "I'm all for listing all the alternative names for the characters", that sounds like a good idea. Do you think we can work up a list of all the alternative names that have been used here between us?

Posted by Berrybrick in United States, 25 Mar 2011 06:09

Zordboy-He never had a hand, always a hook.

Posted by umptybagger in United Kingdom, 25 Mar 2011 08:34

I'm pretty sure "Lord Sam Sinister" is called Slyboots- Baron von Barron was renamed Lord Sam Sinister and put in a different outfit when Orient Expedition came along, Slyboots is an entirely seperate villain.

^^^
@Huw
Dr. Kilroy was also known as Charles Lightning and Professor Articus
Johnny Thunder was also known as Joe Freeman and Sam Grant
Pippin Reed also known as Pippin Read, Gail Storm, and Linda Lovely

Hopes this helps Huw! I took the info from THE LEGO BOOK

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 25 Mar 2011 10:27

^ Cool: I hadn't thought to look in there: I'll take a look myself then.

Hey Huw...I'm not astute on all the Adventurer names, that's why I come here for the knowledge...;) But it looks like you guys beat me to the punch. I was using my LEGO book as ref. to help with names...but just in case this is what I got...(seems like above bricksetters know more names)

Dr. Charles Lightning/Dr. Kilroy/Professor Articus
Pippin Reed/Gail Storm/Pippen Read/Linda Lovely/Miss Pippin Reed(?)
Max Villano/Rudo Villano
Achu (has red cape)
Johnny Thunder/Sam Grant/Joe Freeman
Lord Sam Sinister/Lord Sinister(?)

Dats all I got amigo....I wonder if TLG has an official catelogue of names for their figures that can be requested?

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 25 Mar 2011 12:40

Oh also...got some more names (I got a headache diggin this out)...

For the fig. with the hook for his hand and monocle(just clarifying Baron Von Barron).....Baron Von Barron/Baron Von Baron (one 'r')/Lord Sam Sinister/Ulrich Unhold(?)/Mr. Hates (from a game?)/Sam Sinister/Lord Sinister(he's wears a top hat)

For the fig. that you have Lord Sam Sinister (again for clarity, top hat, regular hands)...Slyboots/Sam Sinister

For Dr. Charles Lightning/Dr. Kilroy/Professor Articus...there is also Dr. Lightning(?)...not sure though.

Pharaoh Hotep/King Pharaoh the Third(?)

Garbarros/Gabarro the Sailor(?)

Lego really liked to go nuts on the names huh?...whew...

Got the additional info from here.... http://www.adventurers.dk/

Seems great for all Adventurer fans.

Perhaps the Villano name is different based on region - Rudo is the only one I recall hearing. The only potentially official source, however, that I can recall off hand is the Soccer PC game.

Adventurers always was notorious for all the alternate names.
