Announcing the Brickset discussion forum

  • Announcing the Brickset discussion forum

Posted by Huw, 01 Apr 2011 13:21. Filed under Brickset.

One of the most requested features in our annual user survey is a discussion forum: Well, now, at last, I have decided to implement one.

You'll see a new tab in the menu above ready for its launch, which will probably be on the 2nd or 3rd of April, if everything goes to plan, today, the 1st.

Check back over the weekend for more news...

Cool! Cant wait until it comes!

Posted by vynsane in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 13:37

Awesome! Now we can argue about forum categories instead of minifigure categories!!!

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 13:42

Yeah, right - look at the date !

Posted by brickmatt in United States, 01 Apr 2011 13:44

^ I wondered about that too...

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 13:45

I almost expected to see a big APRIL FOOL page when i clicked the forum tab... but the news was posted after midday, so maybe it's for real? Only time will tell...

Other stuff: Is Argos actually getting series 4 in, or not? April 1st release date and nothing new yet... worrying.

Posted by PaulTR in United States, 01 Apr 2011 14:07

Hmmm, I hate April Fools Day. I go up to my room and find undergarments swinging on my ceiling fan, courtesy of my annoying sister. Then, I look on Brickset and find out a Discussion Forum is in the works. Yippee! But then I see the date again (April 1st) and now my day is back to being miserable. :(

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 14:07

We wouldn't joke about something as important as this ... anyway, it's still the morning somewhere on the planet ;-)

Posted by legohpcity in Sweden, 01 Apr 2011 14:08

Oh no, it is a April fool! :-(

Posted by Be-Burger in Israel, 01 Apr 2011 14:09

I have a feeling this isn't an April Fools prank... I sure hope its not a prank... That would just be cruel!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Apr 2011 14:16

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! :D Sorry. :) I HOPE it's not an April Fool's joke! :)

Posted by flump in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 14:20

Something I'd be keen to see as well, but given the length of time we've been asking for one together with today's date....? Come on, who do you think you're kidding?!

Posted by Lego Lord Mayorca in United States, 01 Apr 2011 14:20

I've got a lot of opinions and thoughts on my mind about collecting Lego, and boy, am I ready to start dumping them into a forum!

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 01 Apr 2011 14:22

My wife will be hoping this is just some kind of prank. She hardly sees me anymore as it is. :o)

Posted by Theredbrick in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 14:24

I think I'll stick to Eurobricks. I don't think a forum is for Brickset. I just can't see it working, I mean it will take alot of work.

Posted by vynsane in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 14:29

Dang, I didn't even think about the date :(

Posted by Imperial13 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 14:43

Remember, this is NOT a discussion forum: if you're looking for a place to discuss general LEGO topics, please visit the Tabletown forums! We need members people!

http://www.tabletownonline.com/forum/index.php

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Apr 2011 14:43

@DrDave: Why are you "yellow"?... :)

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Apr 2011 14:45

Hm, new moderators: rocao, and atkinsar! :) WAIT! THEY'RE THE FORUM MODERATORS!!! :D

Posted by legomaniac in United States, 01 Apr 2011 14:46

Im so confused :P , I think its a joke. Imperial13 is right, unless rules can change.

Posted by Imperial13 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 14:53

No but we seriously need more members, and Brickset has gained quite a following since he last reminded people of Tabletown. It's a great community, and Huw's even a moderator.

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 15:04

^^^ I wish Alemas! Huw's asked me and a few others to help out moderating the site due to it's ever increasing popularity, but as for a forum, I haven't heard anything until this announcement today. Like you, I hope it's true, but then again you know the date, and I've fallen for too many pranks today already...

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Apr 2011 15:13

@atkinsar: What if... he hid everything, and his REAL purpose was for you to be a forum moderator? :) He could have made an elaborate plan! :)

Posted by Nikola Bathory in Bulgaria, 01 Apr 2011 15:14

I hope that this is not a joke, because a forum here would be really a cool idea!

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 01 Apr 2011 15:26

@alemas - well, if Huw's going to make atkinsar yellow, then I think I should be at least aqua or something. :o)

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Apr 2011 15:28

@yellowcastle: Uh, yeah, probably. :P Or he's simply going to do it later. :P

Posted by TheCityCentral in United States, 01 Apr 2011 15:29

I dont think this is a joke, theirs already a forum tab. If it is, it's pretty elaborate! :)

Posted by Imperial13 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 15:33

^ Adding that to the code is ridiculously simple dude.

Posted by Legocityfanatic in United States, 01 Apr 2011 15:35

april fools?

Posted by jturnbull65 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 15:37

It must be an April Fool's Day prank.

Huw was very deliberate in mentioning the fact that it was the 1st: ".. if everything goes to plan, today, the 1st."

Also, why put a forum tab up that had no function behind it if it was really ready? The announcement would have sufficed. Seems like he was just trying to take the joke further.

Posted by Imperial13 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 15:38

No, Huw has meticulously been working on this project for at least a month now, and the forum has over 90.01 hours put into it. Trust me, this will blow your hat off.

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 01 Apr 2011 15:40

I heard he had put in over 100 hours so far, but I don't have his timesheets handy. :o)

Posted by MetroiD in Bulgaria, 01 Apr 2011 15:44

Huw, I think you've unknowingly conjured up a world of trouble for your own self there mate :D

Posted by brickmatt in United States, 01 Apr 2011 15:45

Given Huw's previous hesitance to implement a forum, I thought it might be a prank - unless it is the real thing and he's just trying to have a little fun by announcing it today.

Posted by glamdring804 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 15:47

I think that Huw's telling the truth, but maybe he should have announced yesterday or sometime else, just not today.

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 01 Apr 2011 15:49

@brickmatt - That's what I was thinking too. But I really don't have a pony in this race as I very rarely participate in any of the Lego forums already out there. Of course, I find it nearly impossible to navigate some of those, but that may just be my and my 1989 Apple IIGS computer. :o)

Posted by EdwinJackson in Norway, 01 Apr 2011 15:49

I always wanted a Forum at Brickset. But i fear it is an Aprils Fools.

Posted by DrathMaul1997 in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 15:53

Come on Huw, relieve the suspense!

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 16:01

I've been asking him for years! I doubt he would implement one now, he has been adamant in the past, and if he was going to implement one, why today?

Posted by (-)-Crushmaster-(-) in United States, 01 Apr 2011 16:07

If it happens on April 1st, don't believe it!

Posted by jturnbull65 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 16:22

Huw has been suspiciously absent from this conversation. It must be a joke, otherwise he would confirm that it's really happening :(

Unless of course he has run off to the local pub!

Posted by ScarVader in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 16:34

I hate April Fools day Jokes. My dad already fooled me today by saying that Brickset had heard news about the new U.C.S LEGO Star Wars set coming out in Summer 2011 and that it was the Super Star Destroyer that is made up of 10 and a half thousand pieces. I told him that it was April Fool's Day and that he was pulling my leg, he laughed. I think that this is some April Fool's thing per jturnbull65.

Posted by vexorian in Bolivia, 01 Apr 2011 17:08

Yeah , it is a joke. Not like we really needed yet another LEGO forum.

Posted by LEGO_Lord in United States, 01 Apr 2011 17:09

/\A U.C.S Super Star Destroyer would be awesome!/\

I hope this isn't one of those annoying April Fools' jokes.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Apr 2011 17:21

Look, Huw, if THIS is a joke, it would be THE meanest joke EVER! :(

Posted by LEGO_Lord in United States, 01 Apr 2011 17:25

/\ Yeah, I hope it isn't another joke, I already had to deal with one on Brickipedia. At least this one doesn't result in a block from the site. /\

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 01 Apr 2011 17:34

Personally, I would like a UCS Mos Eisley or UCS Yavin, but this is not the right venue for that discussion.

Posted by joeyzbrown in United States, 01 Apr 2011 17:58

great idea!!!!!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Apr 2011 17:59

@yellowcastle: ...until the forum arrives. :)

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 18:03

^ IF the forum arrives.

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 01 Apr 2011 18:11

Well I feel the News topics kinda turn into forums. When news on some new set comes out people generally start dicussing it here (in the topic). The only thing I see get erased are random arguements... otherwise people already communicate fine here.

The only problem with a forum is they're often hard to navigate, etc. Well as long as we keep that so called "free expression" limited I'll be happy. Sorry, but I'm really not a fan of board junk like avatars, titles/ranks, signatures, etc (most of us users are mature and it becomes a real turn-off). Really what is the purpose of forums...? Brickset is already kinda an organised one. If I want to post something I go to the related news topic. If I wanted news, well the mods post it as they get it. If I wanted set information... well obviously I'd read the many useful reviews already provided. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade so long as there's no spam or arguements I'm happy to test the forum when it's ready.

Posted by Orthobotrex in Philippines, 01 Apr 2011 18:12

A kittycat on EB and a series 6 on TBB that has a sinister character amongst the selection...and now this, all on April 1...makes you wonder! But then the Tabletown forum link is still at the bottom...Well?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 18:15

Wow, 50 comments while I've been out! Clearly it's generating a lot of excitement!

Dunno what you're all on about, April Fools! If you want some really good ones, head over to http://www.brothers-brick.com/

Posted by brickmatt in United States, 01 Apr 2011 18:18

^ I thought so.

Posted by starfire2 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 18:18

Good one Huw!!!

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 18:23

^^^ Yeah, you had us fooled!

Posted by Orthobotrex in Philippines, 01 Apr 2011 18:25

I bet someone will be having a good laugh...

Posted by glamdring804 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 18:27

That was mean!!!!!!
Do that again and I'll-I'll-I'll do something!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Apr 2011 18:40

@Huw: :( I seriously believed you were implementing a forum. :( VERY disappointed. :( You shouldn't do certain jokes... :( You might end up hurting someone. :(

Posted by legofanatic2414 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 18:56

I am abit skeptical....OK, I am VERY skeptical. Still though a forum fantastic! SIGH Huw, why do you pull my leg that way?

Posted by Juno in United States, 01 Apr 2011 19:17

I knew it was a prank all along. Didn't believe it for a second. Although, a forum would be good. Does anyone else agree?

Posted by PaulTR in United States, 01 Apr 2011 19:24

After thinking it over and sitting on a whoopie cushion (I'll get you next year, brother!), I don't think a forum would have been a good idea anyways; internet forums are usually cluttered, unorganized, buggy, and troll-havens. Brickset, by contrast, is cleanly built, 99% bug-free, and easy to use. But you got me there for a second, Huw; good joke :)

Posted by 1265 in United States, 01 Apr 2011 19:57

Huw...not funny and wasting time on factitious news.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Apr 2011 20:00

@1265: Indeed. :(

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2011 20:08

Yes, Huw - shame on you ! Unless it's true, of course.... ;-)

Posted by joeyzbrown in United States, 01 Apr 2011 21:29

@Huw- you should make it anyway. It would be awesome

Posted by Zrath in United States, 01 Apr 2011 22:15

At first I was like :D
But then I remembered reading some of the set reviews and comments and I was like D:
Whew, good thing it's an April's Fool joke. :D

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 01 Apr 2011 22:40

Wait, so it IS an Aprils Fools? ha ha ha. hilarious.

Posted by legohpcity in Sweden, 02 Apr 2011 02:16

April fool... I really wanted an forum :(

Posted by flump in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2011 04:49

I don't know what to think anymore. First there is, then there isn't. Then I work myself up and convince myself there just might be, then @Huw comes out of hiding and more or less confirms there's not. Then, then DrDave throws another curve ball. I'm lost but eagerly waiting for an update to confirm it's real. Please God, let it be.

Posted by taffer1979 in United States, 02 Apr 2011 07:04

I'm pretty new here, but I think you should make a forum. I'm not big into them but your fans clearly are. I think you are missing a great chance to please your many fans and generating more website content for your site. Which means more hits on a daily basis.

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2011 07:32

Reading Huw's last comment, I don't think he was saying that *this* was an April Fool's joke ... quite the opposite in fact ...
