Gimme LEGO reveals Super Star Destroyer

Our very own DrDaveWatford is organising a display of UCS Star Wars sets at the National Space Centre in Leicester, UK this weekend, as part of a larger display being put on by the Brickish Association. Thanks to LEGO, he's been able to get hold of a Super Star Destroyer, months before its release, to complete the display.

He's diligently documenting the unpacking and building of this behemoth over on his excellent blog, Gimme LEGO. So far it's out of the box and the minifigs are assembled. He'll continue his review as building progresses, so keep an eye out later this week to see it in all its glory and to find out what he thinks of it.

I do not like the new Dangar. I think the old one was better. The destroyer looks cool though.

All figures for sale?

Posted by princedraven in United Kingdom, 11 Jul 2011 08:58

Just want to say a quick 'thanks' to DrDave for his blogging, a lot of time and effort has clearly gone into this (and his others) review and it is greatly appreciated.

I am green with envy that he had an early hands on on the SSD. :) But definitely two thumbs up for his blogging about the build.

Great Lego blog and definitely look forward to seeing the various stages of the build.
That little mini-Star Destroyer is so cute...;)

LEGOlas1 and MvdS : sorry, the minifigs aren't for sale ! That having been said, I think the Vader figure is the same as in Set 10212 Imperial Shuttle and possibly 10188 Death Star as well, and Bricklink prices aren't too bad if that's the case. I'm not sure how easy it'll be to source the new Dengar and IG-88, however....

princedraven and others : delighted you're enjoying the review and the blog - thanks for reading !

Part one is great and I look forward to the next part. Do you get to keep it?

Posted by Lego Lord Mayorca in United States, 11 Jul 2011 14:07

Yes, color me excited for the next part! This set is definitely near the top of my Wants list; I hopefully will have it in my collection by the end of the year.

Amazing - can't wait to get it!!!!

^^Yes, do you get to keep it?

Posted by flump in United Kingdom, 11 Jul 2011 14:27

^ Doc paid for the set so I'd like to think he'd get to keep it! :o)

A really good Part 1 - thanks. Looking forward to the grand finale.

BOGO sale, I await thee.

Posted by starwarsnerd3001 in United States, 11 Jul 2011 16:01

Been waiting for this set for many years. I think I'm going to sell my 10030 star destroyer to pay for this massive set. If anyone in the U.S is wanting it let me know.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 11 Jul 2011 18:54

@LEGOlas: Ah, I thought you could buy the SSD and buy a Battle Pack and get away with it... :)

Posted by cjg in United States, 11 Jul 2011 19:23

@Alemas: You could buy TWO SSD's. :D

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 11 Jul 2011 19:48

To all those that have asked, I'm afraid that I almost certainly will NOT get to keep the set after the National Space Centre exhibition. I will certainly be buying my own copy when the set is released, however - it's epic !

Posted by voypro in United States, 11 Jul 2011 20:52

RE: BOGO - I would buy two then sell one on ebay for 85-90%, after auction fees I would hope too get the one I would end up keeping for 75% of retail.

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 12 Jul 2011 00:29

^^That's too bad, considering you had to pay for it. :(

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 12 Jul 2011 04:00

^ I didn't have to pay for it; LEGO very kindly gave a copy of the set to the Brickish Association to display at their show at the National Space Centre this coming weekend, and I was lucky enough to get to build it.

Awesome.
I've blogged this in our blog - I hope that's fine with you guys.
Great pics by the way.

Posted by flump in United Kingdom, 12 Jul 2011 07:05

Apologies all, I misread something in the blog and understood DrDave had bought at retail rpice. He didn't - I got it wrong!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 12 Jul 2011 07:33

@cjg: One to build, the other for parts? :)

Posted by voypro in United States, 12 Jul 2011 12:15

Dr Dave should get to keep it. While I am sure he is enjoying the build, but the fact is he is doing a great service for Lego. An all day build should be worth something,

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 12 Jul 2011 14:11

^I agree. Why can't he keep it. He's building it for the show...he's blogging and doing a thorough review that can convince potential buyers. That's sounds so...cheap... for Lego to not let him have it and a few kits for all the effort.

I have seen many complaints in the past about cheaper Chinese mini-fig parts. While I think I have notice some quality differences among some minifigs (primarily on the legs), could some one please school me on this subject.

What has appeared to me as the cheaper plastic looks unfortunately like the plastic on Bossk's legs as show on the Gimme Lego review. ( Also, I think maybe lego should eliminate most stickers on the UCS and other high end sets. )

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 12 Jul 2011 17:28

Cheaper Chinese minifig parts are only used in 'extended product line' items such as magnets and CMFs, and never, so far, in regular sets. I think we can be 100% certain that the figs in this set will be Danish, but Dr Dave can confirm this by looking underneath their feet. If '(c) LEGO' is visible, they are Danish, if not they are Chinese.

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 12 Jul 2011 19:03

^ I've just checked the 4 regular minifigs (IG-88 is obviously not a standard minifig) and all have '(c) LEGO' stamped on the inside of both feet, so you can rest easy !

Also, just to respond to some of the comments above, the reason I probably won't get to keep the set is not because LEGO want it back but because it was given to Brickish for the purposes of the NSC display at the weekend rather than to me personally. I just wanted to make that clear as LEGO have been really supportive of our desire to get hold of a copy of the set and put on a great Star Wars display.

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 13 Jul 2011 19:54

That was nice of Lego to give Brickish a free 400$ set for display! (Even though they can't keep it)
Wait, if the set is finished, why aren't they selling it? Does is take that long to manufacture?

Posted by flump in United Kingdom, 15 Jul 2011 09:28

^ Brickish were given the set by Lego to help promote it this weekend. Doc took on the task to construct it on behalf of Brickish/Lego. Doc may or may not keep hold of the set for future events although the property remains that of Brickish. Not that it matters anyway.

Desperately waiting for Part 2 Doc. I so would have lent a hand constructing it!

^ It's available at FBTB now.

Part II is now up on the blog! =)

Posted by lovaquero in United States, 15 Jul 2011 13:28

It's a pretty good shot by lego, but still not quite what the community created.

Lasse Deleuran created a masterpiece years ago (http://mocpages.com/moc.php/1549) and it is simply amazing with only a few hundred more bricks (3540) than the official Lego version.

I have this beast and it is simply stunning. The Lego UCS set will join it on my wall, but I'm afraid that the UCS set will not remain there permanently like Lasse's does =)

Still, looking forward to the "official" set =)

^ Thanks for posting the link, lovaquero. I think both the MOC and the official version have their pros and cons. I like the dark bley in the super-structure of the official version better than the MOC, to be honest. What I'd really like is to see both versions side by side and then make a judgement....!

Posted by lovaquero in United States, 18 Jul 2011 13:58

^LEGOlas1: No, the MOC isn't mini compatible, if you mean in the same way that the official set it. It is just a display MOC. The interior is all support structure.

^^DrDaveWatford: Agreed. Lasse's MOC is very monochromatic. =)

I do like it better due to (1) the non-flat underside, (2) the "super-bay" on the underside, (3) more detailed engines and engine blocks for those 13 beastial engines and (4) better greebling, similar to the ISD.

My thanks to you for posting the build of the Lego SSD - it IS amazing and I cannot wait to get one!
