New feature: select your timezone

  • New feature: select your timezone

Posted by Huw, 20 Oct 2011 06:25. Filed under Brickset.

Just to prove that I am listening to your requests and adding enhancements to the site that don't revolve around maximising Amazon income ( :-) ), I've added a feature today that will let you specify your timezone and see timestamps on news articles and comments in your local time. If you're not logged in, or don't specify it, they'll remain showing in the server timezone which is EST (GMT-5).

Click on the Your profile link at the top of the page, and then Edit your profile at the bottom. While you're there, why not update the rest of it?

(You can thank Andhe in the forum for the suggestion)

Thanks for that, I always found it rather discombobulating to read I'd posted a comment at 4:30am.

^ I've always felt the same, but its a great feature you added here, huw

Nice one Huw, continuing to make this site even more spectacular.

Nice feature. Your fist sentence reminds me only too much of the current issue on one of our other LUGs.

Posted by aaronptrck in United States, 20 Oct 2011 14:02

I don't even want to know how much I've spent on LEGO products since you guys implemented the new Bargin Watch feature! :P

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Oct 2011 14:11

@aaronptrck: A lot, I presume. :P Which means a lot of money for Brickset. :)

Posted by Hello_World! in United States, 20 Oct 2011 14:26

Thanks Huw and all other involved! Its always been disconcerting the have an abstract time shown (at least where I live :-)) although it no longer indicates AM vs. PM.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 20 Oct 2011 14:29

^ No, we are 24hr clock round here now :-)

Posted by Hello_World! in United States, 20 Oct 2011 14:43

OK, thanks again Huw!

Posted by Hello_World! in United States, 20 Oct 2011 14:47

Wait, what happened to 'edit comment' and 'delete comment' buttons?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Oct 2011 14:50

@Hello_World!: Still there. :P Far right of your comment. :P

Posted by modena in Italy, 20 Oct 2011 14:53

I'm just testing this new feature...

Well done! Excellent work Huw! I am looking forward to using this!

Posted by modena in Italy, 20 Oct 2011 14:54

@Alemas Does Brickset receive money in some way? No adverts here, maybe the Ebay thing!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Oct 2011 14:56

@modena: Brickset gets a percentage of Amazon purchases made through this site.

Posted by Hello_World! in United States, 20 Oct 2011 14:58

Alemas, it isn't there for some reason or another.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Oct 2011 14:59

@Hello_World!: Try Ctrl + F5, then.

Posted by modena in Italy, 20 Oct 2011 14:59

That was a quick reply! Thanks Alemas!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Oct 2011 15:12

@modena: No problem! :)

Posted by Hello_World! in United States, 20 Oct 2011 15:24

Alemas, I've tried that but it didn't work, I even logged of and then back on and that didn't work ether. Thanks for your help anyway.

Posted by TooMuchLEGO in United States, 20 Oct 2011 15:26

Thanks Huw! Nice feature! Now just to see if I'm correct, you posted that at... 11:25 AM, correct? I'm six hours behind England.

Posted by aaronptrck in United States, 20 Oct 2011 16:29

@Hello_World! Did you try clearing your cache/cookies/history?

I'm willing to bet $$$ that even though Brickset (meaning Huw) gets a little kickback from Amazon sales, he just turns it around and buys more LEGO products with that money! haha!

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 20 Oct 2011 17:17

Thanks Huw, and Andhe! :) it's always confused me when I look at the post times, used to be able to work it out but more often than not I'd forget what time zone I should be converting from, and my head would be in a spin again, agh! But not anymore! :D

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 20 Oct 2011 17:33

But what is UTC? Guessing its the new way of saying GMT? First imperial to metric and now this! They'll be suggesting a Europe wide currency next! :p

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 20 Oct 2011 17:35

UTC = Univeral Time, Coordinated http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coordinated_Universal_Time

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 20 Oct 2011 18:32

Huw, you should change the site so you can search for members by Time Zone.

Posted by cwl704 in United States, 20 Oct 2011 19:26

Great addition.Thanks!!

Posted by LEGOSLUG in New Zealand, 20 Oct 2011 23:21

Huw, This is awesome.
I think that Thomson & Thomson is right though, You should be able to search for members by time zone, but if you added it, maybe it should just be optional, because it might be hard for some......

Now, I have done the profile thingy, Huw, Have I done it right?

EDIT: I have done it right. Awesome.

Posted by CharlieTheFunEngine in Australia, 21 Oct 2011 02:30

Not working correctly. I am in Brisbane, it is 4:30pm/16:30 here, but it says I posted my comment at 5:30pm/17:30, which is on Sydney time.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 21 Oct 2011 03:10

^ Have you adjusted your clocks yet this season?

Posted by Lunchie in United Kingdom, 21 Oct 2011 08:14

A great addition, but odd that you put your country in but your location is determined by your IP address. When I use my BB, it thinks I'm in Iceland, not the UK!

Posted by CharlieTheFunEngine in Australia, 22 Oct 2011 22:38

@ Huw, Brisbane does not adjust it's clocks, ever. We are always on AEST. It is the source of much debate, but that's the way it is...

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 25 Oct 2011 10:32

^ OK, not sure why that is then, but select Sydney time for now :)
