mastermind emailed us to say that from Saturday, the Daily Mirror will be giving away 12 LEGO sets!

He has no more details but I suspect they'll be polybag sets, and will probably be a different one a day for 12 days.

If you're in the UK, be sure to get down to your newsagent and check it out. I wouldn't bother actually reading the newspaper though :-)

Update: there's a bit more information on the Mirror website:

"Starting on Saturday 18th October we're giving away 12 brilliant LEGO toys FREE with the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror. It all starts with a police helicopter on Saturday and then pick up another great item every day!

"LEGO is Britain's favourite toy and this collection is perfect for Christmas. We'll also be giving you a carry case, playmat and LEGO stickers too. You'll be able to pick up the toys each day from Woolworths and Early Learning Centre stores or apply by post and get the whole set before Christmas. See the paper for full details."

Update: thanks to billding for finding this page on the Mirror website which shows the following 12 sets:

    • 4991 - Police Helicopter
    • 5627 - Mini Digger
    • 4992 - Fireboat
    • 7872 - Creator Lion
    • 5626 - Coastguard Bike
    • 7604 - Creator Triceratops
    • 7452 - Green Racers mini car
    • 4938 - Fire 4*4
    • 7873 - Jet Plane
    • 7797 - Biplane
    • 7611 - Racers police car
    • 7871 - Creator Whale

    Not bad for free!

What set do you think it will be?A man and newspaper seller?Or maybe a legoman with just a newspaper?

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 15 Oct 2008 16:06

Nice. I don't live in UK, though. :(

Posted by legoville410 in United States, 15 Oct 2008 16:30

no us promos ever!!

Posted by jet94 in United Kingdom, 15 Oct 2008 16:34

I read that the first free set is a police helicopter. You have to pick it up from woolworths or the early learning centre

Posted by Retsnom Kcor in United States, 15 Oct 2008 16:37

Legoville410: I know! there should be some US promos cuz we dont get crud. There should be like some Gas Station Promotional sets or something!

Posted by bsmarthen in United States, 15 Oct 2008 19:22

Any chance to get the paper airmail? We dont get anything like that.

Posted by MatrixQuest in United States, 15 Oct 2008 20:09

I want it in the states...all we've gotten in the states in a long time is non-lego, lego related, burger meal toys. Is there a way to get these in the states? US funds aren't worth anything in the UK. It would cost a lot on ebay for us.

Posted by brankell5566 in Canada, 15 Oct 2008 21:08

Hey Huw if you find out what the sets are can you tell us please?

Posted by mastermind in United Kingdom, 16 Oct 2008 02:55

Quoting the site:"To celebrate our fantastic giveaway, we’ve also got 10 massive LEGO City cranes to be won!" Wow.
I'm applying for that. Finally a U.K Promo!The U.S had Promo's from 179 (around that) to 2005 I think. Now it's the U.K's turn

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 16 Oct 2008 08:13

I don't understand why there haven't been any real LEGO promos in the US. Even the newer Batman LEGO happy meal toys were non-LEGO compatible! When I was growing up in the 80's and a young adult in the 90's McDonalds gave out REAL LEGO building sets in polybags. They were awesome and a real worthwhile Happy Meal prize.
I wish this type of promo was taking part in the US as well as other LEGO crazed countries. Oh well! Maybe Kellog's, Duracell, Shell Gasoline, or McDonalds (all former partners with LEGO promos) will want to partner up with LEGO in the future here in the US so we can add promo sets to our LEGOverse!
I wonder if the small Impulse sets (firefighter, poiceman, knight, etc.) fill the void left by no longer having Promo sets? The Impulse sets are in the UK right, so maybe this last point is null and void?

To those LEGO fans in the UK that want these sets, I hope they are easy to track down for you and you don't waste too much petrol searching for them!

The promotion is running in the Republic of Ireland also, I received confirmation by email. The sets can be collected from Smyth's Toys, or by post.

I presume it is the Irish Daily Mirror running the promotion here, rather than the ordinary UK edition of Daily Mirror (although the response I received by email merely indicated "Daily Mirror").

This is great. I DO NOT feel sorry in any way for the US! Look at how many sets were 'US only'.

Posted by mastermind in United Kingdom, 16 Oct 2008 11:30

I agree! US complain they never have promo's, more than 1/2 of the database says: "US only" The Daily Mirror came out with the Promo yestarday.

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, 16 Oct 2008 14:08

It came out already? Which Lego model was it?
And i have seen US fans complaining lego is 'more expensive in America'. :O

Posted by billding in United Kingdom, 16 Oct 2008 15:58

The Lego sets that will be released I suspect are the ones that are shown on this page, www.mirror.com/lego since it has the spare instructions for them.

For your interest, I compiled the sets and #s:

4591- Police helicopter
5627 - Mini Digger
4592 - Fireboat
7872 _ Creator Lion
5626 - Coastguard Bike
7604 - Creator Triceratops
7452 - Green lego Racers mini car
4938 - Fire 4*4
7873 - Jet Plane
7797 - Biplane
7611 - Racers police car
7871 - Creator Whale

So, to recap - 12 sets, 5 minifigs.

Why does everything good happen in UK?!

Posted by MatrixQuest in United States, 16 Oct 2008 22:58

A lot of these are previous exclusives to Brickmaster...which costs a lot. Is LEGO shooting itself in the foot by making the Brickmasters much less rare???

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 17 Oct 2008 03:33

Brickmaster subscriptions have never been available to UK residents.

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 17 Oct 2008 06:14

After seeing these sets, the only 1 I am worried about not getting over here in the states is the Coast Guard Motorcycle! I've had this set on my want list for a long time and hope that it is not a UK Exclusive. I have 8 of the 12 from my BM subscription and have bought the others from the LEGO store or at Target in the Magorium Wonder Imporium set. The others (Police Racer and Creator Biplane are easy to build with my available parts and the instructions that I have downloaded from the Mirror's site) are easy to build!

There are several other sets on my want list that are exclusives to European countries as well. Exclusives make your brand desirable, because human nature is to want what you can't get! Even though if this Coast Guard motorcycle becomes/is an exclusive to readers of the Daily Mirror, I will be upset with the fact that I can't add an orange motorbike to my Town but I'll understand why LEGO only offered it overseas.

Good luck to those in GB and Ireland finding all the sets!

Eerex Sweeher:

Octane has been in Lego for the longest time! Shell had a set or two as well!

bluemoose:

Sorry for UK residents...

But I don't get Brickmaster anyway!

Posted by lego12 in United States, 17 Oct 2008 16:40

Hello, fellow members! Sorry I haven't been here in awhile! Anyways, these look really cool and I would really like it if they did that here!

Posted by cyberjoker in Australia, 17 Oct 2008 19:27

I think th UK and US need to both think themselves lucky and spare a thought for those of us in places like Australia and NZ. I Can't remember the last time we had a chance to get anything like this without paying a fortune for it on ebay! No brickmaster, no paper exclusives and I don't even think we are getting any Mcdonalds Batman (even though it's not really Lego)
OH to be lucky enough to live in either of your counties :-(

Posted by Ultimate Brickmaster in Ireland, 17 Oct 2008 19:43

QUESTION!!! So we collect the sets in store (woolworths and smyths toys) or in your newsagent?

Posted by fubuki in Japan, 18 Oct 2008 00:16

These appear to be mostly the mini sets from the Magorium Wonder Imporium with a couple racers thrown in. I personally only feel like I'm missing out on those four with minifigs, especially the Coast Guard Bike!
cyberjoker, I feel the same way. I cant believe LEGO wont establish BrickMaster in Canada. Go too far north or south, and ya cant ship lego, I guess. Hell, if I had a US post box, it would only take me an hour to pick up my sets...hmmm...

Posted by Mirinee, 18 Oct 2008 04:28

Yes! This was too good to be true! Just got back from Woolies (it opened just 30 mins ago) and now I'm holding the awesome little helicopter set with the cute police officer inside. :D

Posted by peppermintmecha in United Kingdom, 18 Oct 2008 05:31

Well, off to town to fetch my free lego =D.
