Advent countdown, day 1

  • Advent countdown, day 1

Posted by Huw, 01 Dec 2011 11:04. Filed under Advent countdown.

It's likely to be a slow couple of weeks for news, so member Red Five Standing By suggested I do an article a day featuring the advent sets of the day. I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep it up for 24 days but I'll start as I mean to go on...

Day 1So, on day 1, in the Star Wars calendar, we have a rather excellent Republic Cruiser made from about 20 pieces. It really is a good rendition for its size.

    Day 1
In the City calendar we have a very shifty looking minifig wearing a standard issue prison shirt under a scruffy jacket. He must be shifty, he has a gold tooth, LEGO only gives them to shifty characters for some reason. What's more, he's brandishing an offensive weapon. I can't decide whether it's a snowball or a toilet roll :-)

Please don't do this it spoils the surprise in the calendar!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 11:38

Haven't you opened yours yet? I thought it was traditional to do so in the morning when you get up. At least it is in our house :)

Posted by grandbuilder2001 in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 11:40

Wish I have my Advent Calendar! My mum ordered it on Monday, so it will probably come on Monday!

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 01 Dec 2011 11:41

I wish the Star wars event Calendar had more minifigs instead of mini sets. @Legoplasticman1111 Hello! Today is Dec 1st and your supposed to open one each day in order.

Posted by princedraven in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 11:43

Must admit, I may be being a big kid but having not opened mine yet (had to agree to open it with my son and I leave for work before 7am) I would rather not have known what it was going to be...

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Dec 2011 11:45

Must be a snowball. :)

EDIT: Actually, it's a toilet roll, as snowballs are usually white 1x1 round studs. :P

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 11:45

A toilet roll can be a dangerous weapon in the wrong/right hands, or so teen-frat movies would have me believe.

Perhaps you could do a hidden drop-down or something, so people can avoid ruining their surprise. But it's quite nice for those of us too cheap/lazy to buy the calendars ourselves.

Posted by BrickBob09 in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 11:48

I love this idea! The mini Republic Cruiser I think is quite good. The parts included are nice too.
As for the shifty character, yes I do believe he has stolen a toilet roll. I'd love to know his intentions. Is he going to throw it at a policeman? Or perhaps flood the prison toilets with it? Or he may simply just wants a break from that rough sand-paper stuff they normally have. ;)

Anyway I think this idea is quite exciting, sharing our thoughts on the daily LEGO. Also, with little news going around, it's something extra to fill the gap :P
Hope you make it to the end!

EDIT: Perhaps you could put this under a separate news heading, e.g. Advent Count-down, so those who don't want the surprise to be spoiled can filter it out. Although I don't see why it does spoil it, everyone usually opens it first thing in the morning.

Posted by Firox 5000 in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 11:49

As I have both, I open one in the morning and the other later.

Posted by xcrossx in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 11:51

Ahhhh, I've been waiting for weeks to open my Star Wars one and totally forgot about it today until I saw this.
May have to rush upstairs and do it now although I'm not that fussed about the sets to be honest, only a few of the figures. I suppose the Yoda will be the last one?
Seeing the guy with the toilet roll makes me wish is for the city one too! Have to draw the spending line somewhere though. Especially with an expensive year next year! ;-)

Posted by taddlock in United States, 01 Dec 2011 11:57

How about doing the review of the set the following day? That way you don't ruin the surprise.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 11:58

@Brickbob, great idea. I've created a new news category so those wanting to avoid spoilers can do so.

Posted by princedraven in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 11:58

^ Thanks Huw!

Posted by BrickBob09 in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 12:01

@Huw, thanks. It's a really good idea, I don't see where the fuss is coming from, unless some people open it in the evening like Firox 5000. Personally, I can't wait to open it in the morning! :)

Posted by grandbuilder2001 in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 12:05

I guess hes stealing the toilet paper so he has a gift for the other jailbirds

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 12:44

Huw, perhaps you could post these under a new category - 'Advent Calendars 2011' or similar? People who don't want to see them could then opt out. I haven't got either, the same as Andhe, but I'm considering it now!

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 12:44

Gah, You got there first Huw!

Posted by CaptainJonnyBoy in United States, 01 Dec 2011 13:21

Awesome looking ship! I gotta see if I have the pieces to build myself one, as I don't have the Advent Calendar myself. Oh, and that is definetly a toilet-paper roll. He's gonna "TP" the Christmas tree or something :)

EDIT: Yes! I had all the right pieces to build one for myself! Of course, I made mine the "Charger c70 retrofit" AKA the Republic Frigate, as seen in The Clone Wars

Posted by derfazoid in Switzerland, 01 Dec 2011 13:24

aww now you spoiled it :( *goes to open the calender* whoop a republic cruiser!

Posted by lukehankenobi in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 13:36

My boys opened it after school. Great little build! If you don't want a spoiler don't log on till after you open it?

Posted by legogeek in United States, 01 Dec 2011 13:36

@Huw - you might think about adding a notice on the main post about the news category feature advising people they can turn it off if need be... like you did with the Amazon updates. ;o)

Me, I'm looking forward to seeing each day here since I don't have either calendar.

Posted by Hobbestimus in United States, 01 Dec 2011 13:40

Please don't do anymore of these without some sort of spoiler for those who don't wish to see, or I can't check back in to the site for a month. Not everyone does their advent first thing in the morning. :(

^ Thank you. Having just finished mine with Sam (he had to wait for Daddy to get home), realised that indeed it was the same as the pic I glanced at quickly earlier.

I came on here to have a winge but seems others got there first! :o) Thanks for posting this 'switch.'

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Dec 2011 14:00

@Huw: YOU JUST COPIED AND PASTED WHAT I SAID!!! :P XD

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 14:03

^ Because you said it so eloquently :-)

@All, tell you what, I'll make sure I publish these later in the day from now on, >8pm GMT or something.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 01 Dec 2011 14:08

@Huw: Good grief, I said something eloquent enough that Huw used the exact same sentence. :P I officially feel humbled. :P

Posted by flump in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 14:12

I feel humbled to keep such company. :p

Posted by Red Five Standing By in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 14:19

@Huw. Thanks for taking up the challenge/burden of sharing the advent calendar contents. I only have the Star Wars calendar so it will be interesting to see how the other one goes. Sorry if any surprises have been spoiled!

Posted by legobuilderstudios in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 14:26

Th villain is that evil he had to use toilet paper on his victims! Anyhow the republic cruiser looks nice! Very simple build to it!

Posted by Berrybrick in United States, 01 Dec 2011 14:42

Teh...Police, very christmasy <_<

Anyway, still a good idea. I'm looking forward to the rest.

Posted by Toa Of Justice in United States, 01 Dec 2011 14:55

Regarding gold teeth on minifigures: I know of at least one non-shifty character with a gold tooth. MAX-treme (in 8863 Blizzard's Peak and 8864 Desert of Destruction) has a gold tooth. So does Captain Stunt (with the same head as MAX-treme) in 9094 Star Striker.

Posted by Hello_World! in United States, 01 Dec 2011 15:02

Great idea Huw!! I have the star wars one, and did an in bag assembly (IBA), which was fun and challenging.

Posted by Savage_Steel in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 15:13

I've gone all retro and get the kingdom's calendar from a couple of years ago 7952, since the city one this year wasn't very nice - for the record I got a blacksmith today. #odd

Posted by TooMuchLEGO in United States, 01 Dec 2011 15:31

My mother placed an order for the City Calender, said it should be here tomorrow. :) So you know, I get to open TWO tomorrow! WHOO!! :P

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 16:18

Perhaps Huw it would be a good idea if you posted the countdown on the morning after it we in the UK have opened it, because then it won't ruin the surprise for people in the US or Australia etc. Just a suggestion!

Posted by brix in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 16:23

I don't see why people are being so unappreciative of Huw's genius idea of reviewing each day's mini set/fig. If you don't wanna see what's in it, don't go on brickset until you've opened it!

Posted by Doctor Leg O'Brick in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 16:26

Great idea, wish I bought the Star Wars one, but still happy about geting the city one. Maybe the shifty guy got fed up with all the toilets in police stations with no toilet rolls, or he going to leak behind the calender. I still think the guy in the green hood looks like a serial killer with that axe!

Posted by Red Five Standing By in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 16:55

Surely the Australian readers will have already opened their advent calendars before us in the UK?!

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 01 Dec 2011 16:56

I got the CITY one today!

Posted by Red Five Standing By in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 17:01

Just finished the cruiser and have three pieces left over. I wonder if they go towards a secret set...?

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2011 17:19

@Red Five Standing By - Good point, I didn't think that through! But still...

Posted by meyerc13 in United States, 01 Dec 2011 17:34

@Savage_Steel - me too! Bought my son the Star Wars, and my daughter last years' Kingdoms calendar. The City set this year is a horrible Advent calendar.

^^Any time LEGO puts those small 1x1 pieces in a set, they always include an extra of each piece.

Posted by Hobbestimus in United States, 01 Dec 2011 18:21

Thanks, Huw. *fist bump*

Posted by nodnarb162 in United States, 01 Dec 2011 19:04

Thanks Huw, i dont have the calendar so it will be nice to see it daily on here ;) And for the record, my family has always opened our advent calendars in the evening :P (Because we usually buy those cheapo chocolate ones, and we wouldn't want to spoil or dinner :O) but im sure if it was lego i would be all over it first thing in the morning ;)

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 01 Dec 2011 23:53

A toylet paper roll sounds intresting. I'am kinda wish I got the city calendar.

Posted by ChicoCheco in Norway, 02 Dec 2011 04:11

How a bout to present the stuff with one day delay? Than no suprise is spoiled and all of us will be updated? I like that idea. My friend he has SW calendar - and he is takig pictures in his cell phone to how it around :-)

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 02 Dec 2011 22:33

Thanks Huw! I haven't gotten the Lego AC in last couple of years as they have gotten higher in price by five dollars with the quality getting lower (I don't really get in the Christmas mood when playing cops and robbers for one :P) But it's still nice to see what I would've got.

Posted by carding in United Kingdom, 03 Dec 2011 17:27

i think just think that is not bog roll and seeing that it is in an advent calander is a snowball, but hey we all build and play in different ways!!?!

Posted by legomaster78 in United States, 06 Dec 2011 16:20

today is the 6th and no sets are shown for today
