    Day 5The Star Wars calendar might have been expensive but the models so far have been superb. Today's Slave 1 made from 20 pieces is another excellent representation: even its wings rotate. It might be a small model but took some skill to make it instantly recognisable and packed full of detail.

    Day 5 On the other hand, I can't say the same for the City calendar. Another piece of wall today. I much prefer it when each day's model is a stand-alone set. The play value of today's and yesterday's, on their own is absolutely zero. Let's hope the combined prison is worth the wait...

The Slave 1 is absolutely wonderful, best one so far in my opinion, here's hoping the others can live up to this standard! The city prison on the other hand, well, I'll reserve judgement until we have the whole prison.

Yeah so far I am not to thrilled with this years City Advent Cal. I'm not sure what Lego's addiction is to Police and criminals but it seems like all they make any more.

Last year's was much better with lots of individual sets that stood on their own. The fact it had Santa taking a shower was weird, but that's another story.

I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old that are enjoying the city advent calendars (they each have one).... and initially I thought, "How boring, a wall." To my surprise they played with that wall for at least an hour... Once the "bad guy" was behind bars there was no way that he was getting past that wall.

I'm glad I passed on the city calendar and just got the Star Wars one this year. I didn't think there was going to be anything new and so far there hasn't.

my 7 year likes the city one as well.

the "snowball" launcher was a winner and the first piece of the wall worked to protect the police man from the onslaught of "snowballs"

As an owner of both calendars I have to say the star wars calendar is outstanding even though it's a lot for what it is.

The city one is bait of a fail as nothing much has happened in recent doors other than two bog standard Walls.

I love the Slave 1 model. It's got its flaws, but for the scale it's absolutely stunning. Gunray's chair notwithstanding, the SW calendar has so far been magnificent. It's a great incentive for me to become fully alert after I wake up, so that I can put together these intricate little models like the Republic Cruiser or this one.

Wow, I'm stunned. I thought the SW calender was going to be a fail, but the sets are actually really nice! Can't say the same for city one though... but as others previously said I'll try to reserve my judgement until after it's complete.

I agree that the Slave 1 is excellent - a superb little model. Very swooshable, or at least it would be if I could get it off my boy !

For me the SW calendar is in a different league to the City one but having watched my four year old play with his City calendar models each day, I have to say that he's gettting a lot of play value from it. The stories he has made up and progressed so far with a police officer, a robber, and loo roll flinger (!) and prison walls are awesome. I'm definitely not the City calendar target market, but for City fans (i.e. 4-years and up) it appears to be a winner.

I still haven't touched my city calendar and these posts dont help. More and more depressed about it. It was a gift but I cant help but stress over the price paid. So depressing.

My two boys (6 & 3) have had a great time with the City Calendar so far. They are huge SW fans also, but I think it is so relatable for them - good guys and bad guys with a snowball fight. Most of it is Keystone Kops kind of silliness, and they have played with that half (as of today) of a prison with delight. I agree that it doesn't look like much, and I was disappointed that day one crook had no crowbar as in the box picture, but they have had a blast with it so far. They even carry the calendar with them to play on the playset snow surface painted in the box top.

Martin: Hmm, I never thought of that. I guess when I think of it the City sets do have more playability for younger children, but from the perspective of a Christmas loving TFOL they really do not hold the Christmas spirit I look forward too. Not really effected though, I perfectly content with my Winter Bakery and Post Office :)

Slave 1 is simply a master piece!
For city calendar - I actually like the concept. It is aimed for younger kids I feel. When the scene of city calendar will be finished and installed on the calendar pad + background- the overall value will increase a lot! And maybe that`s what it is all about - the expectations to have the complete scene by Christmas.

My TRU has these on sale for $29.95 sale date Dec 1 - Dec 24. They are WAY over stocked on this set (at least 50 units). But oddly had no City Advent calendar. I don't see them selling them to anyone beyond collectors at this point. At this point it is like they are selling a 12 month calendar in late January.

I personally like we are gettng bigger "sets" from the city calender. 4 days for the prison and 4 days later to make another bigger set.

The "log" appearence of the police station/jail, also will go well with the new city city this year. (the park ranger feel)

I would like to see a set that could be used as additions to the winter village.

I love the Slave 1. I think it's the best set yet. As for the City, well I just hope, once fully built, the prison has a toilet roll storage or something to make it more worth-while :P

The City Calender set has PRINTED BRICKS for the Police sign - NOT Stickers! Is this a hint of things to come? Talking of which - surely this is a precursor for the 2012 "Police in the mountains" or whatever that new concept is? As the police station is wooden like the forthcoming one. Plus we got a "spare" printed police sign in our calender! My daughter is enjoying the playability of her City calender. I have to tell her what the things are in my Satr Wars one!

Couldn't agree more with your commentary on the City calendar. I was hoping for a calendar with better play value in the individual days' sets, but when I saw what was included this year decided to give it a miss.

I also agree with Vamproe that a calendar that compliments the Winter Village sets would be most welcome. Lego seems to be missing out on big potential there.
