Advent day 12

Day 12Here we are then, half way through the Advent calendar already! Haven't we had some great models so far! Today's Snowspeeder is another miniature masterpiece: a model of the battle of Hoth at this scale, complete with 6" high AT-ATs, would be awesome!

If you're interested. you can also read FBTB's views on the Star Wars calendar models so far.

Day 12In the City calendar, we have the final part of our police station. I can't say I'm too impressed: it has no glazing in the windows, no door, no roof, they scrimped on the tiles for the roof, and 2x2 corner slopes would have been nice. Still, I don't suppose the target audience will worry too much and I look forward to hearing what your kids make of it in the comments.

(I *hope* future models are not predominently white -- it's such a nuisance trying to select the white parts when photographed on a white background in Photoshop!)

Man, I kinda wish I had gotten the star wars calender now... :P
Those mini models are so cool!

Oh well. I'm sure there will be some good ones next year too!

The police station isn't that bad... I really wanted some more wood bricks :)

Maverick, you can always buy it! Seriously, I always buy extras for the following year. This year each of the four of us is doing a different advent calendar! We are having fun with it.

A good day, simple as that!

Posted by MaverickDengo in United States, 12 Dec 2011 16:19

^^ I would buy it, but I'm kinda tight on money right now, and I'm saving it for 10218 (pet shop).

I wish a bit the Police Station had a different colored roof, so it could be used all year round, but I still like it quite a bit. MY FIRST POLICE STATION!! :P

This police station is the worst 4 days of any advent calendar I can remember.

Arrghh! That means my son has opened the wrong one! I won't say what he has, but it wasn't a snowspeeder. Trouble is he gets up before me, so must have got the number wrong. And now he's in bed so I can't check.

Would it really have cost that much more for lego to have made the police station a good little model, I dont think so. All it would have took was a door frame and door, glass for the windows and a roof. sat there this morning working out exactly what it needs to finish it how it should have looked. wish i had bought the star wars calender now even though i collect city.

always loved the empire strikes back and that hoth battle idea is great, please can we have it lego.

Snowspeeder is a master piece again. I have one comment only - it would be nice if the middle 1x2 piece will be orange instead fo white. The celor scheme will be then awsome! Still a great model though.

I think the snowspeeder is better than the actual mini set which was released.

Posted by legonut80 in United Kingdom, 12 Dec 2011 18:39

As others have said i think the police station could have been better with the addition of just a few small things. Those policemen will be cold with no door or glass in the windows my 5 year old has said, but he still likes it anyway, not sure how long it will be before a windmill will be on the roof, that or a tower :-)

Also, get a chromakey background for photographing white objects and replace the key with white in post.

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 12 Dec 2011 19:02

Well, it's kinda' cute... I agree that that just a couple of elements (Door, windows) would make it decent. And even though kids probably won't care, it does feel like Lego is taking advantage of that. And Huw, how do YOU know it's last part of the police station? :P Has someone been opening their window ahead of time? :P That Snow speeder is almost better then the Minifig sized set! I really wish I had gotten it now... *Looks at Winter Bakery and runs over to play with it* :P
EDIT: Huw, would this be too much to ask for a pic of the calender box art? Whenever I got a AC I always spent hours looking at all the cool models and little hidden surprises and Santa's :)

EDIT II: Say, there's a new HP set on the homepage! So I guess HP isn't over?

Snow speeder is cool I am impressed by the mini sets. Also is this the first star wars advent calender??

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 12 Dec 2011 19:26

^Yep, first Star Wars Advent.

I'm loving both the calendars, as are my children. They've already worked out how to fix up the police station and give it a decent roof etc.

@TooMuchLEGO - if you don't like the roof, change it. It's LEGO...you're allowed to build with it!

The Snowspeeder is one of my favorite Mini model in this advent calendar so far.

Posted by AddictedToStyrene in Australia, 13 Dec 2011 02:42

There are three pieces of furniture (and some naughty criminals and hard working police officers) to go into the police station, so without a roof, it is easier for little hands to play with. Like Martin says, if you don't quite like it, there is a special secret way to modify it. Hint - it's made of Lego!

What I like about the SW miniature items, is that I then look up the larger models on Brickset, youtube and even in the movies.
So far, viewing the larger model of the Republic Cruiser went down well (would like one of these) and strangely liked the OG-9 homing spider droid!

Personally, I wasn't thrilled with the mini snowspeeder - I didn't find it as instantly recognisable as some of the other models. I think this is mainly down to the wing shape; obviously they couldn't get them to be at an angle with a model that size however they could have put some orange in it somewhere.

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 13 Dec 2011 11:42

@itsaturkey It isn't a new HP set (as much as I would love it to be), it's actually from 2005. That's an additional listing that's been added for a version of the set that came with bonus minifigures.

I'm really starting to wish I'd bought a calendar now, but they're sold out everywhere, and we're halfway through already....

In the FBTB review of the advent calendar is the following sentence: "Arguably the most controversial of 2011's Star Wars sets, the Advent Calendar has seen more than it’s fair share of nerd rage since it’s launch earlier this year." I wasn't aware of any controversy surrounding the advent calendar. And what 'nerd rage'? What are FBTB talking about?

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 14 Dec 2011 12:44

LegoCoastGaurd: Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up :) I does seem like an ideal time for the 'bonus' wave of sets for HP with the game being released.
Sabreman: Weird... I don't know what that could be...
