    There's a video on YouTube showing confidential images of some LOTR sets. I'm not going to link to it from here because it's against the site's policy to do so. However I will list the sets that are shown:

    • 9469 Gandalf Arrives
    • 9470 Shelob Attacks
    • 9471 Uruk-hai Army
    • 9472 Attack On Weathertop
    • 9473 Mines Of Moria
    • 9474 The Battle Of Helms Deep

    I'm sure you'll be able to find the video yourself. When you've done so, feel free to discuss in the comments. One thing you will notice is the number of minifigs: I counted 34 in the 6 sets including 9 in Helms Deep!

if these are final sets, I'm quite disappointed. Most of the sets look like Minifig battle packs.. Uruk-hai Army set is a perfect example. Helms Deep looks tempting, but better wait for final/no watermark images.

@derfazoid they are DEFINITELY NOT finished images. You can see that the cave troll isn't even colored.

The little bar on the bottom seems to show complete figures whereas for the pictures they just used whatevers in production to make the image. You can see the Uruk-hai Army set has the figs using black helms from kingdoms but the minifigure bar on the bottom of the box shows different gear on the figs.

I feel like they've been TOO generous on the figs for these sets, not that I personally mind, but I feel like when the finalized sets come out, they won't be giving us so many figs per set

What's up with the horse in the Urikai Army set?

And it seems like every set has too many minifigs compared to what we're used to. This is jarring.

Also: the cave troll appears to be an un-colored white prototype. The "minifigs included" pic has him colored and drawn (instead of a pic of the fig) too.

Well, I can't seem to make much of the figures included except for Gandalf meeting Frodo (which I said before would be something to a rehased 7949; there seems to be a lot of goodies at the back, though)...

Hoping to see better pictures... I think a lot of people will be disappointed, though.

Could've added the song of gollum to the background music. Maybe the effect will be better. :-)

So they are actually doing Lord of the Rings sets? I was hoping it would be Hobbit based since the new movie? I guess they'll leave that until next year.

I have to say some of the sets seem very unimaginative in their building designs but maybe they arent finished either.

Looked at the sets, Must admit Iam really taken by the first and last two sets that appear on the video. Judging from the box shapes, I reckon the sets may be the following prices,

These look like early pics and box art. I wouldn't pass judgement just yet. Overall the set ideas are decent. Looking forward to more pics and future sets. Actually, the Gollum in the spider set looks decent. Almost looks like they made it similar to Selbulba from the Star Wars Podracer set.

The uruk hai battle pack might link up with the big Helms Deep set.

I didn't see Legolas anywhere, which is something I found quite ironic condsidering the fact that he has "Lego" in his name. So far, i'm only looking forward to the Gandalf Arrives set, but the pictures are MQ, so I'm most likely going to fall in love with some other sets when HQ pictures are being released.

I am a bit worried that the price set by LEGO would be quite high for the ff reasons.
1. It is LOTR
2. It is a Branded Name
3. There are many minifigs.

I will not be surprised but disappointed if this will reach the 100 dollar mark. (Big sets)

Gotta admit they are impressive. Right now I am pleased with what I see. Though these are very early prelim pictures things can change but the direction they are going I feel is great. Biggest fear: extreme overpriceing.

Best of all is Lego has so much more in the LOTR series that is untoughed.

I'm a big fan of LOTR ("No Comment" on how many copies of the books and movies that I own...), but I cannot help shake the feeling that this will be nothing more than a bunch of Castle/Kingdom sets with LOTR minifigs thrown in.

That's not a bad thing and I'm sure that many, many Castle fans are happily dreaming right now, BUT given that this is a "licensed" theme we'll all be paying a hefty premium for what is essentially a new Castle theme. I may have to pass on this one... =(

Anyone really familiar with how LEGO designs new sets? How hypothetical/subject to change are things likely to be at this point? The uncolored cave troll is what makes me wonder. These could have been mock-ups to show where they were going with the new sets but not finalized. Or perhaps they're all already going to manufacturing like this. What's LEGO Group's lead time on new sets?

Obviously the new figures aren't final. If you need proof, just Google the preliminary images of the Wampa...

So far I've counted all of the fellowship except for Merry and Pippin.... perhaps they'll make a battle at Amon Hen set, with Lurtz and Boromir and Merry and Pippin?

Also, I really like the fact that they're making these new licensed themes more affordable. Between the Superhero sets ($20 for Superman, or $40 for Riddler/Joker/Harley Quinn/Robin) and now these, it looks like our wallets, though stunned, will not be bled dry just so that we can get all the necessary figures...

For those who are surprised, or think these look like Castle sets, what did you expect?

From the moment rumors started about this line, you could be sure that if they were true that we'd get sets at the $10-14, $20-$30, $30-$40, $40-$60, $100-120 price points. Just look at Harry Potter or Pirate of the Caribbean and you'll see the price points and design limitations that were likely in this line.

Also, for those who think these look like Castle, I don't think so at all. The architecture of the buildings is clearly quite different from anything we've seen in Castle themes before.

Overall these sets are exactly what I was suspecting, except I too think they are being generous with the minifigs, but maybe that is because the LotR is about the characters. Without the characters, these aren't all that different from any other castle line, so I think this is how LEGO is baiting the hook getting us to bite. From here on out there will be slight changes, but don't expect any major differences from these prelim images to what you'll see on the shelf.

This is going to be such an expensive year (again!).

When I read the official announcement I was pretty nervous. After Stars Wars, LOTR is my favourite movie. I also can't wait for the release of The Hobbit next year. But when I saw the pictures today I felt totally disappointed...

All sets look very pretty, but they're missing something. Maybe it's because I'm a UCS Stars Wars collector. Yesterday I was (and still am :-) )building the Millennium Falcon (10179). Those sets are so massive!!! But the LOTR sets are small and I don't know... As said they are pretty, but they're missing something.

Why is Lego Star Wars so damn cool but can't another great movie like the Godfather be used for Lego?? The answer is very simple, because Lego Star Wars (just as Cars, Batman etc) is about all the vehicles, planes etc. LOTR is about people and the wonderful scenery. You can't build that with Lego...

Maybe if there are going to be any UCS sets like the Argonath statues or a giant Orthanc the exictement will come back, but for now... LOTR Lego won't be on my wish list.

I think the entire fellowship might be represented, I might be wrong, but I think Merry and Pippin are in the Weathertop and Moria sets respectively, if not, there are just a couple of extra Sams and Frodos... I love the fact that we're getting a multi-hero line again, I was getting rather sick of having Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and Jack Sparrow with every set. This absolutely has the potential to become as big as Star Wars, at least it's as broad.

The first view is promising, esspecially sets 9473 and 9474 look great. I can already imagine some combinations to make with sets from other themes like The Fantasy Era. The Dwarves' Mine and The Troll Assault wagon for instance fit in great I think. But I think, like billywiz already said, more sets like Gondor etc. are to be expected later. The minifigures, as far as you can see them, look cool.

I'm really surprised at how many people are disappointed in them! I think they look pretty awesome, especially considering they are very early prelims.

And for those saying it looks just like castle, what did you expect?? I don't understand. Its like being surprised PotC ships look just like pirate ships with different sails.

When you think about how these prelims images look, and compare that to the finalized sets of PotC (like ilsa de muerta and fountain of youth) these looks WAY better. Just at a quick glance you can immediately tell what scene the set is from, (Except the uruk hai set of course).

Personally I'm happy, and can only expect better things to come with clearer images and finalized figs.

These look superb! The huge scale of any of the LOTR locations means any set could have an £80 price tag, but looking at these, they've got a good range (eg. shrinking the Weathertop scene, Gandalf on the cart but without Bag End too...). Helm's Deep is a must, - great to go beyond the usual kid-friendly castles.

And the potential for future sets with the more Viking-inspired Rohan, Minas Tirith, Rivendell, Lothlorien, Argonath- its going to move way past the basic castle stalwarts.

More figs is good- too few and you have no armies- and the characters are going to be a major seller.

My birthday and Christmas present ideas for the forseeable future are now completely spoken for.

First I have to say, for everyone who thinks the minifigs don't look accurate or whatever, these images are PRELIMINARY. The final minifigures will be amazing. LEGO doesn't always have all the molds made yet, so they use customs. And about those Star Wars sets, I dunno. Some of them were from The Old Republic, not sure LEGO would make those. But they DID do The Force Unleashed....

Back to LotR, I WANT THEM ALL! All my report card money and birthday money is dedicated to THIS!

To be honest, I didn't expect anything other than a (modified) new Castle theme for Lego LOTR. That is why I am not too impressed with the announcement. It's nothing new beyond the minifigs.

Don't get me wrong, - I'm as big an LOTR fan as most out there - but I was seriously underwhelmed at both the announcement and the preliminary box art for potential sets. No doubt Lego will make $$$ of this...maybe just not my $$$.

I guess I am too hard core - If I want the Arganoth or Orthanc, I'll build it. Not buy the price-point limited, kinda-sorta-not-really Lego rendition that resembles it... =(

I'm not hating on Lego, just not too impressed with the new theme. ;-)

i think i expected more, they are a little too kiddified i think, they look very small but are packaged to look more than they are, gandalf arrives ( and thats it) opening the door for money to be made from a separate bag end set, i think even the smallest set will be stoopidly priced making it a less exciting prospect for me, but i will monitor closely and i realise they are, if genuine, only prototypes at this time.

is the video-poster genuine? - i mean theres a xmas 2012 advent calendar for starwars thats already been done - surely not???

Hopefuly these will sell enough that they'll come up with UCS sets later on: how about a 5 000 pieces Minas Tirith or a 5 feet high Barad Dur with a rotating / illuminated Sauron's eye at the top?

But for the first sets, I expect something very similar to the Harry Potter line (both in terms of scopes and price range).

I do agree with the point a few people already made: Star Wars is about the vehicules. Lego is perfect for those. Action scenes and characters are LotR's strength: much harder to render with bricks. But there are still a number of memorable locations that could take shape: Bag End, Ortanc, Golden Halls of Medoras, the Path of the Dead, entrance to the Mines of Moria, the Black Gates, Minas Tirith, the ruins of Osgiliath, Helm's Deep and Rivendell.

And what about Treebeard and the treants? What type of minifig do you expect for them?

For those who've watched the numerous extras on the LotR extended DVD, Peter Jackson made extensive use of miniatures in shooting the movies (especially for backgrounds). I hope Lego take inspirations from those models. They'll have most of the design-work cut for them!

And we're not even yet in the Hobbitt: how about that Smaug and the Battle of Five Armies!

I agree that LOTR is about the characters and not anything else. Just because the movies look so darn good doesn't mean it will translate into the sets. Medieval stories are about castles, knights/heroes, wars and quests. If you add a little myth, you'll end up with creatures as well. but nothing more than that.

Oooh, for the Battle of Five Armies they could have: Five Battle-Packs!

Anyhoo, these are obviously preliminary, people should not be complaining about minifig detail/weapons/accessories. Also, the building style used for Helms Deep is nothing like any Castle set I've seen, it's so different, I can't believe people are saying it's "Castle with LotR figs". Also, PotC and HP are mostly scene-based themes with few vehicles, so I don't understand why people think it won't be at least as good as those. Also, more minifigs is a good thing, I hated how the first CW sets had only 2 clones apiece.

Now on those summer SW sets, I have mixed feelings. It seems that I see a trend starting for Lego licensed sets: they're getting smaller all the time. Not good. The prices go up, the set sizes go down. I hope this doesn't keep up.

Dang I'm worried were I am going to put every thing, see this is the problem I have a really good Grandma so I never have problems with money, but the downside is that you run out of room to put stuff. ( I have to limit on how many themes)

The sets are okay, for the most part. My personal favorite is Helms Deep, which is unfortunate because it'll be the priciest one to find. It's also a shame that there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get the whole Fellowship... but I'm sure that was part of a marketing strategy.

Sorry to spoil the party.. but this LOTR seems rather underwhelming. Which of course was to be expected. What I most remember from the movies (besides the story line) are the dramatic landscapes and massive battles. 2 things hard to represent within the limitations of a set. Guess I'll pass...

I was more impressed by the other images that are up.
Though I am not realy into collecting city, the mining theme does look nice.
And I probably will get some ot the monster sets.. though some seem to be rehashes of studio and time cruiser sets, they are appealing and have a fresh look to them ( can monsters and mumys can be asociated to the term fresh.??..)
Also the heroes in that line seem to have an interesting victorian look... (league of E.G.??)

Since there is already a nice lot of OT SW sets comming up in january, I dont complain about the fact that there will not be a lot of interesting SW summer sets to spend my money on. Except of course that Jabba's palace. The building is very different and a lot better then the old one, plus the amount of new (or existing but actually speculatively overpriced) minifigs it seems to include make it a must buy for me..

I'm a little disappointed on how the LotR sets look like. But it's as expected quite hard to transfer the images from the LotR movies to LEGO sets. But I'll buy them for the minifigs and will create my own sets! :)

Regarding the SW summer sets, I only need the palace and the skiff. They have awesome minifigs! The rest is not so interesting for me (thank god: the spring sets are already expensive enough (X-Wing, Y-Wing, Tie Fighter, ...))

^ Not disappointed, just underwhelmed. And not too surprised. I personally don't think that they have to look like the movies. I read the books first (many, many times) so I have my own personal images of LOTR that I compare to. Lego designers are good, but not good enough to match what I see in my head. Even the movies fell short on that acocunt. ;-)

I didn't expect these to be more than new Castle sets - so no problem there. It's more disappointment that even Lego is now cashing in on the LOTR market. I don't begrudge Lego - it'll make a fair bit of coin. =)

Monster fighters is a bit dissapointing they use the collectibale minifigures. But this also reveals a possible secret about the collectible minifigs. First the pharoah andthe pharoahs quest all of those monsters now monsterfighters and the the elf Wichita slightly resembles legolas now Lotr.

I'm glad if they are not exactly like the films. Not great just promising images and with a VERY promising Boromir MF. Apart from that, I found out about MINING theme (ouch I've been waiting for that too) and MONSTER FIGHTERS- like Adventurers a great idea but not handled subtly for cool designs just OTT and yes- the collectible MFs!
Is that fair to make them less collectible??

The only way I can see for the Helms Deep fortress to be improved is if they change the color of the structure to a mix of darker colors of greys.

I was really looking forward to this line... until I saw these images. Really boring sets. LOTR deserves a line similar in quality and originality to the Castle sets. Maybe I'll spend my money hunting down more Castle sets. Very disappointing.

I think that the lego company is making these sets kinda simple because they don't want to go all out for a new theme (even if it's LOTR), like how star wars and HP were simple at first, but if the initial response is positive then the quality will get better. I for one think these sets are amazing and everyone seems to forget that despite the large AFOL community Lego is first and foremost a childrens toy so they're not going to be very complex builds. On a side note is anyone else excited about the potential for battle-packs.
