As regular readers will know, Brickset staff member DrDaveWatford runs his own blog Gimme LEGO.

He's just posted a review of the year and highlighted what he thinks are the best sets and themes, and also the worst. When you've read his opinion you can vote for one of ten nominated sets in the 'Gimme LEGO Reader's Choice Award'. If you have a favourite set of the year, go and see if it's listed and vote for it. The more votes cast, the more credible the award, so get voting!

I disagree on Star wars bieng the worst theme of 2011. In my book it's alien conquest, the sets are sooo childish and kiddy.

I don't think Star Wars was the worst theme, although it may be the most disappointing. I'll definitely have a look to see the winner of 2011 after the voting has finished :P

Winter Post Office should be on the best set of the year choices.

I find it amusing that Watford rants about the use of the American spelling of "defense" instead of "defence" when writing about the ADU model.

An interesting read in which truth generally reverberates, and a good reminder that I still need to pick up the box of glory that is the Earth Defence HQ. Really, how'd that slip my mind?

A great round up, IMO. Obviously it's Dr.D's personal view & my picks might have been a little different, but not very, and 'Earth Defense HQ' is the top of my list too.

I think it all makes an interesting read, that's bound to cause some great discussion. However, aren't some of the nominees for best non-licensed set actually licensed, like the Maersk Train and VW van, and I could be wrong on this but I thought the Unimog was a Mercedes vehicle.

Excellent read! I checked it out just to read the top set but ended up reading the whole thing! I gotta agree with pretty much everything he said (Mainly cause I haven't formulated my own opinion in those respective categories so it's hard to disagree :D ) however the only thing I MAY not completely agree with is the Jack Sparrow figure being the best. Personally I thought he was awesome too, the first time I got him, then after getting 5 more his aura kinda faded haha. But choosing ONE minifigure from the entire year is really hard, and that's probably the most personalized opinion.

Awesome read though!
