Toy Fair report, part 2

  • Toy Fair report, part 2

Posted by Huw, 24 Jan 2012 12:23. Filed under Miscellaneous.

LEGO stand decoration at the London Toy FairThe Super Heroes sets were in the top-secret area of the stand under netting so they could not be photographed in the low light or from above.

All the minifigs on display appeared to be the final versions and looked excellent. Iron Man's mask does indeed hinge up to reveal his face.

Some of the sets were not on display in their entirety: LEGO was not allowed to because doing so would provide spoilers for forthcoming movies, so while Captain America was on his 'avenging cycle' in set 6865, the other character and vehicle in the set was not on display. There was only five sets on display: the Spider-Man one wasn't there so perhaps that will be a store exclusive.

Other than thinking they all looked great, I can't remember much about them! They are to be released in April.

Update: Pete from fbtb, who I met up with at the fair, recalled more information than I did about these so I'll copy it verbatim here:

6865 Captain America’s Avenging Cycle … this was the only set on display to feature Captain America, who was sat astride a motorbike.  The rest of the set was missing, because Marvel had asked Lego not to show it, because it would spoil part of the movie?!  Anyway, there’s another un-named minifigure and vehicle … one can only assume it’s an enemy of some sort.  Priced at £11.99, so a bargain whatever!

6866 Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown … Comes with Wolverine, Magneto and Deadpool … the figs were all pretty amazing.  Wolverine has normal hands holding the claw pieces, rather than anything moulded like the collectable minifig boxer, as we feared.  I can’t actually remember the vehicles included in the set, sorry!  Priced at £19.99.

6867 Loki’s Cosmic Cube Escape … Comes with Loki, Hawkeye and Ironman.  Hawkeye is driving a jeep type vehicle with Loki in the flatbed at the back … he comes with a custom headpiece and staff and the “Cosmic Cube” (a 1 x1 clear brick!).  I spent most of my time drooling over the Ironman figure, which was brilliant.  My fears over the head being too large were instantly eased and I was amazed to see that the front of the helmet lifts up to reveal whichever of the double sided printed head you’ve got facing forward.  Priced at £19.99, this set is a must buy purely for that fig!!

6868 Hulk’s Hellcarrier Breakout … I think this was Bruce Banner’s lab?  Not sure … but anyway, the set comes with Hulk, Hawkeye, Loki and Thor.  The Hulk figure was pretty damn cool, articulated and I liked the fact the head was in the shape of a normal Lego minifig head, albeit it bigger to be in scale.  The Hawkeye figure seemed to have a new bow & arrow type weapon.  Priced at £49.99

6869 Quinjet Aerial Battle … A pretty substantial set, with the Quinjet being pretty large, very sturdy and eminently swooshable.  Quite a bit of play features (moveable wings, cockpit, pop out undercarriage thingy) and minfigures Black Widow, Ironman, Thor and Loki.  Priced at £69.99, I think … although I don’t seem to have written the price down!

You can read more of his reports at fbtb.

Hulk's pants are not purple!

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 24 Jan 2012 12:38

I'm surprised they're going to so much effort to keep it a secret! I know you said that most of the Avengers sets and Minifigs weren't there, but I'd like to know if Black Widow was there, and what she is like. If I'm honest, that fig is the only thing I'm excited about in this wave.

Posted by Mequel De Vaughn in United States, 24 Jan 2012 12:40

Out of Captain America, Hulk, Ironman, Thor etc you are worried about Black Widow..lol

Posted by AgentWHO in United States, 24 Jan 2012 12:43

I hope they do Redskull's car, I love that thing.

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 24 Jan 2012 12:46

@Mequel De Vaughn, yes I am! I collect female minifigures, and seeing as she's the only one she's the most important! I am also excited about Wolverine, and perhaps Thor for his hairpiece, but other than that the Marvel sets don't interest me much.

Posted by shawn1818 in United States, 24 Jan 2012 12:49

What Thor minifigures were there?

Posted by 18000pieces in United States, 24 Jan 2012 12:53

@henry12580 Agreed. The Hydramobile was the best thing about Captain America, even though I really liked the rest of the movie too.

Good to know they look good - 5 and an exclusive seems right, especially since that's how the DC wave worked out. And an April release date is especially good - I'll be able to blow all my cash on these, and then save up some more before LOTR comes out :P

this its amazing.. some new about new heroica setS?

Posted by KillDeer in Canada, 24 Jan 2012 13:50

Hulk looks great!

Posted by BrickBob09 in United Kingdom, 24 Jan 2012 13:59

@Huw, did Thor have his winged helmet or just normal hair. Also how big is Iron Man's helmet? The normal racing helmet size or bigger. Do you have any set prices for these? (just so I can break the news to my poor wallet :P )
Thanks a lot!

@Shawn; I know! It would be a lot better in the traditional purple. Perhaps the new Avengers film features him with beige shorts.

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 24 Jan 2012 14:07

The Avengers movie does indeed have him in khaki trousers, rather than the classic purple. I don't see many people, gamma rayed or not, wearing purple trousers :p. Sounds like a great day Huw! Do you get personally invited?

Posted by aquafreak125 in United Kingdom, 24 Jan 2012 14:44

Did they say Iron Man comes in the Cosmic Cube Escape set? Thats what Hamleys was saying...

Posted by slave2leia in United States, 24 Jan 2012 15:11

In the world of Marvel I'm only a fan of the X-Men. Other then Wolverine (who is over used) do any of the X-Men make an appearance in LEGO form? Prof X, Cyclops, Jean, Emma (could have a clear diamond form too), Storm, Iceman (like Emma, clear would be cool), Angel, Magneto, Mystique, anyone other then Wolverine?

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 24 Jan 2012 15:17

@slave2leia, I'm with you.. X-men have always been my personal favorite when it comes to super heroes. I would love to see more than just Wolverine.. I'm sure they will release more as the years go on.. I see this series being a lot like SW (there are tons of characters/vehicles/settings for TLG to use as inspiration for future sets - and still have us salivating for more).

Posted by slave2leia in United States, 24 Jan 2012 15:26

@pstricler27, I hope you're right. The X-Men's Black Bird seems like a logical set for LEGO as does a Danger Room play set. I just don't want a Wolverine in ever set like he is in every X-comic.

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 24 Jan 2012 15:32

@Huw Do Wolverine's claws look the same as the new werewolf's? The picture in the customer catalogue of Wolverine makes it look like he has claws instead of hands, but I'm guessing now that that's just the way the claw-grips are angled.

Posted by VooDoo1011010 in United States, 24 Jan 2012 17:02

Who comes in the quinjet ariel set( or whatever its name is )?

Posted by sidersdd in United States, 24 Jan 2012 17:11

No Green Lantern fig either? Store exclusive set perhaps?

Posted by Zordboy in Australia, 24 Jan 2012 17:54

I'm so glad they're more aware of spoilers than they used to be.

You know, the Lego toys totally ruined the first couple of Harry Potter movies for me, heh. Anyway.

Posted by Krivorn in United States, 24 Jan 2012 18:23

i'm so exited!

Posted by Okay in United States, 24 Jan 2012 18:24

Can you tell us what the set with Hulk in it looked like? Also, was the Avenging Cycle brick-built or molded?

Posted by schvatts in United States, 24 Jan 2012 18:39

Yeah, the no Green Lantern is killing me. I hope to see him soon. I excited for these new marvel sets. I personally and glad that Hulk is not in purple pants.
Does Ironman's head look too big because of the flip up mask? All I can picture is the Knights Kingdoms jellie bean knights helmets that are to big looking without the armor on. I was thinking Ironman's helmet would be way better looking if they made it like Clone trooper helmets.

Posted by legomaniac in United States, 24 Jan 2012 19:08

Cant wait for these sets :D

Posted by lego chicken wing in United States, 24 Jan 2012 20:03

I cannot wait until these sets come out. Are they making spider man?

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 24 Jan 2012 21:21

You can't remember? Must've been a long trip, or they weren't the best....

Posted by rmarkworth in Germany, 25 Jan 2012 04:58

Thank you for your nice report.
I think 2012 will be one of the most expensive LEGO years so far (SW, LOTR, MARVEL, DC).
Now I want all the LOTR-Sets just to get the whole fellowship :)

Posted by deathwatch in Hong Kong, 25 Jan 2012 06:17

i really want a description of the deadpool minifigure!! can someone please give one?

Posted by BrickBob09 in United Kingdom, 25 Jan 2012 07:01

Thanks you, these descriptions are a lot better. I'm relieved to hear about Iron Man's helmet not being too big, infact, being described and a 'must-have', I'm quite excited about him.

"6866 Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown... I can’t actually remember the vehicles included in the set, sorry!".
Hmm... I'm thinking a helicopter or his motorcycle. Or am I making to big an assumption here? :P

So we're expecting the Marvel sets to come to around £170 in total? Not too bad considering the DC sets come to £225. But still, it's going to be a tough year.

Any reports on the buildable figures? I don't want them but was wondering about any new pieces, etc.

Thanks again Huw!

EDIT: Forgot to add the Spider Man set. Perhaps this theme won't be as cheap as I first thought.

Posted by Indy1 in United States, 25 Jan 2012 10:35

What color was Iron Man? Dark red, or just red?

Posted by halfpenguinhalflego in United Kingdom, 25 Jan 2012 13:33

I am so glad that Deadpool is gonna be produced, 'cept if he comes with Wolverine then we can expect the version from "Wolverine:Origins", which frankly, was terrible.
However I am really excited by the Quinjet being the big set after looking at it on Marvel Wiki. :D

Posted by brixton in Canada, 25 Jan 2012 14:41

I'll probably pick up 2 or 3 of these sets. It depends on the photos. I'll mainly get them for the mini-figures though.

Posted by ngclarkiv in United States, 26 Jan 2012 01:34

Ten bucks the missing minifig is red skull. He'll be back in the avengers. He didn't die the captain america movie. He transported himself into the future which happened to be around the same time that they found cap.

Posted by deathwatch in Hong Kong, 26 Jan 2012 01:57

@halfpenguinhalflego
i asked bigospedros from fbtb, who's gone to the toy fair, about deadpool and he said he spotted a figure with red head gear and black eye holes in a vehicle. We are saved :)

Posted by spency13 in United States, 26 Jan 2012 09:24

Wow, go figure! Lego putting the only girl fig in the most expensive set. Yay. *eye-roll* Other than that, these all sound pretty awesome!! Thanks for the 'review'!

Posted by vwong19 in United States, 26 Jan 2012 09:47

I hope this is just the tip of the iceberg with more sets to follow as Ironman 3 and Thor 2 come out in 2013 and eventually sequals to Capt America, Avengers, and Hulk.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 26 Jan 2012 12:52

I can't wait for the X-Men figs!! I didn't expect anyone other than Wolverine.. Deadpoll and! Magento!! What luck?!!

Posted by lego chicken wing in United States, 26 Jan 2012 21:47

I really think that Iron man looks really weird cause of his huge head. But that's only because his head is a flip up thing, right?

Posted by Rocka 3.0 in United States, 30 Jan 2012 19:35

There goes all my money. Well, about $33 bucks for the Cap's bike and Loki's Cosmic Cube Escape. And I accually like Hulk tan shorts, I always thought purple was strange...
