Why would it be bad news? It strengthens LEGO as a company, giving them the ability to branch out into different things.

I'd like them to stop creating more and more Star Wars sets, for I have almost everything I want. And I don't have the storage capabilities :(
They should move on to Super Heroes or other things (Back to the Future, Smurfs, Ghostbusters, ...)

The potential bad news would be the inevitably ever-rising prices for licensed SW sets, those same licensed sets taking up space that original/non-licensed lines could fill (a long-running original Space line is less likely while SW is active, for example), and yet more rehashes/redesigns.

The good news is that there ARE plenty of ships and characters that've yet to be made in the SW universe... It's just dependent on LEGO to actually make them, instead of constantly going back to the aforementioned redesigns.

If we don't see an official Ebon Hawke in the next decade, I for one will be very disappointed.

Well, yes, it's good news, only because the cancellation of the line would be bad news... but I seem to recall the last time the license was renewed, new properties were coming out, like Clone Wars, and Force Unleashed, so hopefully Lucas is really going to focus on the new properties, instead of the umpteenth version of the x-wing. Is it too much to hope that new movies are in our future? I know, I know, but ten years is a long time...

If Lego wants to keep Star Wars interesting, I suggest that they branch out with the expanded universe.
What about an Admiral Thrawn? Shadows of the Empire? Kyle Katarn/Dark Forces/Jedi Knight?

I agree with the comments, how many times can you make a X-Wing and a TIE-Fighter or any ship/vehicle/persons for that matter, each time with a more detailed look of how they are portrayed in the films?

Great news. My kids at age 3 and 5 watched their first star wars a couple of weeks ago. Now watched all 6, and the original trilogy many times over. Now I don't have to pay stupid money to greedy resellers (I know, its just market demand, I'm just stirring) and can get better sets for RRP or less - definitely less.

So whilst it may be the umpteenth xwing, millennium falcon or jabbas palace for some of you, for a whole generation its the first. So no, I hope they stick with the films, in particular the original trilogy and re-release all the classics in even better quality.

@wayfinder - yes, for my kids the films came before the Lego, even though they love lego. Its kind of surprising, but actually star wars films are remarkably child friendly (episode III being a slight exception). My boys find disney films either too boring to hold their attention or two scary (I know that sounds silly, but to them the Lion King is truly terrifying). Star wars they'll happily sit through, be absorbed and dream of being a Jedi.

^ Agreed 100%. There will always be a market for a new X-wing and Millenium Falcon as there are new fans born everyday. My first Falcon was last year. I have last generations X-wing, but welcome this new one as I do not mind having a wing man. This years TIE fighter will be my first and I've been collecting since 2007. There hasn't been too many repeats in the 5-6 year span.

My sons are 3 and almost 1. The 3 year old loves playing with his light saber and with my SW collection. I'm glad that we will continue to collect LEGO SW into his teenage years.

The thought never crossed my mind that LEGO would consider not continuing with this license. I only hope Marvel and DC get a fraction of SW's longevity.

Yeah, it's good news...some of us don't already have every set, and it's interesting to see what they can update about, say, the X-wing and the TIE fighter. I mean, look at this year's: The colour-blind dude who designs TIE fighters finally got fired! (jk, but seriously, where did they get the idea that they were BLUE?). They can also continue with the myriad of expanded universe things out there, I suppose...(not my cup of tea, but someone out there's gotta like it). There are probably plenty of Clone Wars sets they can still do, and plenty of new clone trooper designs I'd like to see, for one. :D

TLG would be crazy not to renew this license, it literally saved their bacon in 1999 and will continue to insure some level of profitability for the next 10 years, unless the world suddenly decides to hate Star Wars. With the market so enamoured of SW building blocks sets, if TLG did not renew then one of their competitors would snap it up in a heartbeat. Remember those "other brand" GI Joe-license building block sets from several years ago? Would anyone enjoy that level of quality in an officially-licensed SW set? If you're a SW fan like me, it's better to suffer through the 20th version of the Millenium Falcon and the 100th different Han Solo figure with LEGO quality...And like has been said earlier, here's hoping that such a long license means more original content out of Lucasfilm (although I'm not holding my breath).

For me this is good news. but I do have the storage problem where I can only limit to certain themes and so far Star wars has been the dominate theme in my lego collection and now think I think about I havent bougth a non-licensed set in a while. Still I hope that they re-make the Cloud City or some episode II or III sets . but I agree they should make some Expanded universe sets like the APC and TIE hunter from the Rouge squaderon 3 game would be nice or the Rebel V-wing from Rouge squadron I. @rmarkworth a smurf theme would be downright stupid but a Ghostbusters theme does sound pretty good.

I like the movies and LOVE the animated TV Clone Wars spinoff! So, at least for me, "ten more years" is going to be another happy part of my lifetime.

If you'd asked a couple of years ago I might have leaned towards 'bad' but the most recent reinventions of ships like Slave 1, x-wing, tie fighter etc have been great although I can't see how these can now be significantly improved. I'd like to see more 'scenes' such as the Endor battle, Hoth battle, Jabba's palace etc. I think these sets give good value with a high number of cool minifigs. Also the 'Games' range has huge potential. Please, please, please can we have a huge Ewok village worth c.£100 with shed loads of Ewoks in it! The ulitimate collector series has loads of potential left in it and possibly a return to the Technic collectors models that didn't quite live up to their potential last time around... how about a Mindstorms R2D2 (or even a Wall-E from the Disney franchise while we're at it!) Not being a completist I'm fortunate to be able to look forward to cherry picking whatever they come up with for the next 10 years as my 2 sons grow up. 8o)

I love star wars but I must agree with iabstract and morgan19.

I really do not like seeing 4 versions of slave one, or any more sith infiltrators.

I find every time they re-make a set it devalues the old one.

there will however always be a collector in need of every variation. Will they have to pay the higher appreciated price? Perhaps not, because most fans will settle for the newer better model again depreciating the worth of the old version.

Lego should stay to building unique new sets, or at least cap how many "new and improved" models they do.

I hope I never see another slave one again, making my old ones feel at least a little bit special.

But thats me.

This has just confirmed that i will stop collecting now. The prices are rising to insane levels for minimal pieces. As fuelbreak said. Yes, the desgins are getting better, but only after 4 attemtps at a set and i see no point in having 5 of the same ship. Also, I only collect sets from the films, I had to ignore half of the sets of the last 4 years (clone wars) and with the launch of 'The old republic' I have a feeling the range of sets I would want would be very limited. In my opinion the SW range should have ended in 2007, it would atleast have given closure to collectors.

to those that complain about de-valuing of old sets with each new rendition, i say you're forgetting that LEGO is primarily a toy and not a collectible to be sold for profit

i bet there are tons of kids that are thrilled each time a remake comes out, so they can get the vehicles they like without their parents having to pay 4x original price on ebay or bricklink

i am not a child, but as an adult collector who came out of his dark ages just a couple of years ago, i am very pleased that i am able to acquire a wide variety of Star Wars sets without having to resort to paying ridiculous prices on older sets

i have been content to wait for new releases of most sets, and it has worked out very well so far

I wouldn't say it's bad news, but I'm tired of Star Wars. I just want something fresh, and I feel that Star Wars takes away from valuable Space and Sci-Fi space (original, preferably. I'm not a big Sci-fi fan). I like the Star Wars movies, just not this much. They get boring. And too be honest, since January, I've felt that Brickset has been too Star Wars oriented, I just get tired of hearing about it.

This is good news, as long as Lego tries something new with the theme. There's no way that Lego can successfully keep reproducing x wings and slave ones for the next 10 years. There are plenty of models that haven't been produced, and if Lego keeps this in mind, Star Wars should continue to be a worthwhile theme.

It'll be good if LEGO stops repeating sets. There are still sets we haven't seen, like Padme's ship, the droid factory, a Jedi Temple, a Yavin IV base, maybe some Kamino sets, The Invisible Hand, maybe some Utapau platform with Obi-Wan and Grievous....... and there's still a bunch of opportunities within The Clone Wars. I'm not sure they can get new stuff out for another ten years though...

I think it's good news for Lego, Lucasfilm, and fans. New fans will appreciate all new sets, and old fans get to pick up sets they missed the first time around. (As well as see them produced in greater detail.)

Yes, it's repetitive at times, but surely it's not as bad as the City Police and City Fire product lines? (The new forest theme notwithstanding, to some degree.)

One thing's for sure, LEGO won't have to worry about money for a while. We, on the other hand...

I do agree that the redone sets are getting somewhat tiresome, especially with the ever-rising prices. I understand the market for people much newer to LSW, but for the rest of us, they're the slightly (or sometimes much) better versions of sets we already own.

It would be nice to see some Expanded Universe sets, but the problem is that those don't have near the fan base held by the movie saga or the Clone Wars show. Who knows though, people may still buy them simply because they are under the Star Wars name.

One hope I have is that LEGO will release some of the Alliance's ships. LEGO has never produced models of the Nebulon-B, MC80 Cruisers, or Home One (the actual ship, not the command deck). Or the CIS's Munificent, Lucrehulk, or Providence-class ships, especially the Invisible Hand. Seeing these in the future would be very nice.

There is a lot of potential for new and different sets with the Clone Wars planned at least through a 7th season and there are supposedly 50+ scripts done for the new live action tv show that might see the light of day in the next 10 years. Also, you know there will be at least one more slave one with Jango. Perhaps even next year when AotC 3D hits? (assuming Phantom makes enough $$)

^ The live action TV show will be called Star Wars: Underworld and is rumoured to feature bounty hunters quite heavily, being set between eps III and IV. Hopefully it will provide more ideas for sets as I've stopped buying remakes of things I bought 10 years ago for 2-3 times the price. Love the line, great minifigs, but I refuse to spend £50 on an x-wing or TIE.

I think, Scifiantihero, that whilst EVERYONE has seen the six movies and the TV show for the most part, the EU is unknown waters for a lot of fans. You could do a LEGO Thrawn and have a lot of younger collectors thinking "Huh? Who's this dude?"

I think it's great that LEGO retain this license - I would hate to see it go to a competitor. It's good to know that things that were rare come round again, like the battle packs with Endor soldiers. It's a pain for someone who's bought a lot of variants in the past, only to see them re-done slightly better with maybe one special figure or part, but at least the old versions can be broken down for parts. The price hikes with each iteration are frustrating, though I've long since passed the point where I try to buy everything. But AFOL interest is fading with each re-iteration, which is reflected in the wider LEGO fan community.

Where I think it does detract from LEGO is in the production of other Space themes. It gets repetitive to see the same Star Wars ships over and over again, and it overshadows the creativity of LEGO's output in inventing its own lines of space ships.

Or, or take the set apart and use that thing, oh whats it called? Oh yeah imagination and build you own set. Do you complain when Chevy makes a new car? No they are improving on an old to make it better. You guys sound like little girls.

Star Wars is a great line that should be made by lego. If they had these in the 80s when the first trilogy came out imagine where the line and movies would be today.

I have to side with "fuelbreak" and a few other in the minority here. I initially started buying all the Star Wars Lego set, but now they're just re-releasing everything over and over again (and again) there is nothing actually new. I worry they'll start to do what was done in the late 70s and early 80s with Star Wars toys, and release obscure ships/buildings/characters from the Star Wars Universe just to make money off the name. Yes its good if you're a fan of the Star Wars Universe but for those who like other themes, they may find Lego devoting too mush energy on Star Wars and not on other themes.

Although I do have to admit the recent minifigs are a much improvement, but if you're only interested in the minifigs, time to setup a Lego chop shop on Bricklink.

To be honest, I'm not surprised at all. Star Wars is still one of LEGO's top-selling themes and few have ever come close to surpassing it. Of course, I am getting kinda tired of all the remakes. I don't want another X-Wing or Millenium Falcon. What I'd really like to see is a Thebe Palace playset or some Expanded Universe sets. But, who knows? They are releasing a couple based off the Old Republic game and this might pave the way for sets like a Wild Karrde from the Thrawn Trilogy. Or, from the Original movies, an Ewok village, big tree and all. Well, there are my two cents.

@catdaddy: I can understand how you may be thinking we are just complaining about the remakes, but I think some of us have legitimate concerns. You offered up the example of the X-Wing. Well, what if all LEGO made year after year were X-Wing sets, Millenium Falcons, and TIE Fighters? What we are complaining about is so few decent, new designs coming out. I don't mind having a few of those classic sets, but TLG really should start looking for some other ships/places to make sets out of.

@Joefish: Agreed. Personally, I think LEGO just needs to have a "Space theme". They can have fighters, cruisers, racer-ships, etc. I would just rather see some variety in Space LEGO.

I have to admit I'm torn on this one. I am excited that they are continuing however the thought of so many remakes bothers me. I'm a rather serious collector and having so many variations of the same ships just drops the value of my collection. However I do feel that Lego has many ways to go with this. Considering technology has advanced so far in the last 10 years such as the gaming industry, I feel they will use games like The Old Republic as a source for sets. Also I would love to see a few sets make it to the UCS such as the Malevolence. A few rebuilds would be ok but i don't want to see to many.

What I would like to see is more varied battle packs and small booster packs for it like Ninjago has. This I think will go a long way especially for the army builders. I am building an army now and I find that getting a hold of weapons and unique armor is very hard to do and expensive. I can make my own but they would only have a personal value to me.

In the end we will all have to see what Lego decides to do about the "stale" state of Star Wars. As for me I will continue to collect as I always do. It will just take longer for any of the collections I have to become more valuable, I'm still young and I can wait!!.

Padme's cruiser would be good - wouldn't have to be chrome, although the powder-paint silver turns to dust too easily and maybe all pearl silver would be a bit feeble.

I'd like to see more TIE Fighter Variants (like the final TIE Advanced, or the Vanguard, Oppressor, Lander, Phantom, Raptor, Hunter, Interdictor, Scimitar, etc. from the comics, computer and card games) - though not if they're going to ramp up the price as they have with the latest TIE. Of course, they'll probably just go and do the Interceptor and Bomber again in the newer, pricier style of outlined grey.

Good news. It's their big time seller. Why wouldn't you want to continue to have a large revenue stream which will help out the company as a whole and will fund other product lines. Star Wars doesn't take away from the Space theme. Space Police was great. Alien Conquest too. And soon enough another Space line.
This is the year of the license...just be patient and the other original lines will come around again.
As for original lines...NinjaGo is doing GREAT. The models are excellent...design and build-wise.

Sounds to me like they think well we've done at least 5 x-wings there is still money to be made if we do another, my advice bring back that other Lucasfilm theme INDIANA JONES, or some other new better licensced theme I vote a really good space theme or something, still there is the 3D movies to make toys for!!?!

Cheshirecat: Ha ha! :P Yeah, Bamby is probably the saddest and most depressing movie I have ever seen.
I can't say I am surprised at the deal. As long as George Lucas makes money off of Star Wars Lego they're going to keep going, but ten more years? I can't imagine the CW going on for more then 3 years, they're already in their 6th season I think. As despite what people say, I think the CW has kept Star Wars alive, because without it Lego would have to recreate every set like three times. But I agree with Fuelbreak, I hope they're going to start recreating sets they haven't recreated before. Like a AAT (Only this time a real one, not some blue AAT) I am really hoping to get some new playsets like Jabba's palace. I've been praying for a Kamino playset ever since Republic Commandos came out. I would love an expanded universe collection that was updated, not just given three sets, and also sets of things that came out a while ago (coughcoughstarwarsknightsoftheoldrepubliccoughcough)
Here's to ten more years of Star Wars sets...
That is if the world doesn't end... :P

I am glad they still have the contract but like the rest of you, hope they utilize the time better by giving us something more fun and less, much less of the same.

I had a thought about the expanded universe type sets: probably the reason we haven't seen many of these is because the games/books/whatever that they come from are much more graphic, explicit, or are rated higher. While (I think) Episode I and the Original Trilogy (and the Clone Wars?) are both U rated, Ep.II was PG, and EP. III was PG-13, many influential expanded universe games are probably 'teen' rated and higher (I'm thinking Empire at War, Battlefront, Republic Commandos, Force Unleashed for example). Lego tries to keep the subject matter as 'kid-friendly' as possible (understandable, since they're primarily kid's toys). Though, that said, I do remember a set from the Force Unleashed game, and there are a couple from Knights of the Old Republic, if I'm not mistaken.

There's a couple of larger sets I could see being made that haven't been approached such as an Ewok Village.

I'd be leery of too many reduxes of sets and I would hope for an opportunity that somehow in these next 10 years, there's new Star Wars material that LEGO can work with and use.

I think it's good news, since it's obviously a healthy revenue stream for LEGO, and for purely selfish reasons, it's the main theme in this house.

Given that any specific set only seems to be available for a finite amount of time, I see no problem with the 'remakes' of the iconic ships. Can it be frustrating from a monetary or completionist standpoint? Sure. But not nearly as frustrating for the kids (who far outnumber the adults that collect) who would be denied an X-wing simply because AFOLs are bored with it.

I do hope that they will continue to mine the original trilogy for new sets, as the Clone Wars isn't where my interest lies. All of the Hoth and Endor scenes we have managed to accumulate so far have been great.

Anyway, not going to repeat what's already been said, would be cool to see more new stuff.
Now, when is TLG going to pick up the Star Trek, Babylon 5 or Battlestar Galactica license?

I see that half smiling, half cringing.

On one hand, of course what's good for Lego as a brand is likely also good for AFOLs. And there is a lot of potential left, read: quite a number of SW models Lego _hasn't_ made yet: Nebulon B frigates, Mon Calamari cruisers, Trade Federation Battleships, the Ebon Hawk, etc. Definitely enough to fill in ten more years.

On the other hand, this also means that there will be another 10 years of re-doing TIE fighter, X-Wing, and Millenium Falcon models, because these just have to be on the shelf. Those ships practically _are_ Star Wars.

Now, I don't necessarily object to re-doing already existing models. In fact, I'd be looking forward to seeing a re-do of the Death Star Playset (10188). But I feel that SW models are comparatively expensive. Also, many models seem to feature a lot cheap SNOT by connecting plates together at different angles. The current Super Star Destroyer or upcoming Old Republic Sith ship seem to illustrate that point nicely. I always felt that as good and as original as they looked, the reassembly opportunities of these models are limited.

I'm more worried about what others have already noted: as long as there is Lego Star Wars, odds are that there won't be a strong Lego Space theme in the tradition of Classic Space, Blacktron, Futuron etc., because the two would cannibalize each other. And that's bad because I love Lego Space (I grew up with it), and because Star Wars is expensive.

And strategically, I'm not sure if Lego really wants to be dependant on Star Wars in the long term. There's a risk: even SW might falter one day, or LucasFilm could enlist with a cheaper brick company.
