LEGO set to release Olympics minifigs?

  • LEGO set to release Olympics minifigs?

Posted by Huw, 12 Apr 2012 17:07. Filed under Miscellaneous.

I don't normally run news stories based on rumours but this one has cropped up from a number of sources, so it's looking as if there may be some truth behind it.

It appears that LEGO is to release a series of minifigs to tie in with the London 2012 Olympics.

The story broke in the forum yesterday, and is based on information given by LEGO to several UK retailers who have then discussed it with customers.

It's said that there will be 6 figures including a judo team member, swimmer, archer, and a runner. I have no idea if these will be a UK exclusive, although it might make sense if they are, or whether they will be 'blind packs' like the collectables, but if I had to guess I'd say it's likely that they will be.

    Excited?

(Thanks to Redbullgivesuwind and everyone who has contributed to the thread in the forum)

Kind of makes sense since a few of the pieces have already come out in the collectible minifigures.

Sounds good overall.

These sound great (I hope they are team GB)! It is a good idea by Lego because these could sell really well I think. I am waiting on a fencer (that's my sport) and it is possible, we have already seen the correct sort of blade of course with the Musketeer from Series 4. I can live in hope...

This could either be interesting or completely boring. I guess we'll see.

Well, the swimmer shouldn't take too much thought. :-D

I'd like to see what they come up with for the judo team member.

shouldnt take too much thought either

They better be available everywhere. I'm starting to get really sick of all the exclusive minifigures that only serve to make those lucky enough to have been in the right place at the right time rich off of scalping them to LEGO fans with no self-control and too much money to spend.

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 12 Apr 2012 18:49

@Graysmith - I may be in the UK, but agreed. I imagine it is very frustrating paying inflated prices for Lego exclusives.

Posted by LostInTranslation in United Kingdom, 12 Apr 2012 18:52

^^ That's a little unfair. Several UK forum members, myself included, have said they're willing to send these out to members elsewhere if they turn out to be UK only, whether for trade or sale - if the latter, I bet most of us would do so at cost, not for profit.
I'm really excited about these minifigs. Can't wait to see if the rumour's true and what the last two figures in the set will be.

Sounds... intriguing.... Wonder if they'll do the US too.

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 12 Apr 2012 19:40

I'm not knocking anyone in the UK or this particular promotion/release (should it happen). I'm just sick of every other event having exclusives (often given out for free!) that end up selling for ridiculous amounts and putting a lot of money in the pockets of people who might've done nothing more than show up. The recent Captain America and Iron Man figures that were given away FOR FREE at the NYC Toy Fair that are now going for $400 EACH on BrickLink. Did every visitor to LEGO's booth at that show really deserve to get free merchandise worth $800?

I would think selling them only in the UK would be a loss of potential revenue, unless they were UK team themed.

Posted by BlackFalconBirdman in United States, 12 Apr 2012 21:20

hmm... intriguing. I imagine the figures will need to have some indication of country on them, be it a red pingpong outfit or a black red and gold soccer uniform... I would be disappointed if the Judo figure was not Japanese.

soooo - what about women's beach volleyball, eh? :P
nah kiddin. I like the inclusion of two track events. too cool.
they absolutely need a gymnast for one of the figs.
wonder if they're gonna go skin tone or yellow.

as someone pointed out above, i am also looking forward for them to be real and to be available WORLDWIDE!! ¬¬'

every child wil probably get 1 free if they went to the olympics.

Posted by coyotelily in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 02:35

I usually buy a box of CMF to share with a friend and we sell off the spares at cost so I will be happy to do the same with these if I manage to get my hands on them. Will post on the forum when I get some so that you guys in the rest of the world can get them without being ripped off.

Energyyarrow - I very much doubt these will be on sale for 2016 Chicago Olympics, as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil won the bid for the 2016 Olympics.

haha the americans are jealous

Posted by murphquake in United States, 13 Apr 2012 04:59

@Graysmith those figs were limited to a select few attendees, probably something in the realm of ten thousand people attended the NYC Toy Fair (SWAG-ing it there) and most didn't get anything of the sort.

Posted by JRDA0406 in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 05:25

i don't buy into this whole Olympics thing. It just seems like a ploy for tax revenue through tourism and tacky merchandise.... however as a minifig collector I am interested.

Posted by cheshirecat in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 05:57

Given how careful and protective the ioc and locog are of their ip lego must have spent a fortune on the licence or it will have no mention of Olympics, games, London or 2012. Will be interesting to see the pics.

Posted by ericjohn in United States, 13 Apr 2012 06:20

I could be excited about this news, if Playmobil hadn't already announced that they were releasing fifteen Olympics sets worldwide including: two female beach volleyball players with net, a male gymnast on pommel horse, two female judo competitors, two fencers, a male hammer thrower, and a male target shooter. Sure Klickys are no Minifigure, but you better believe that I'm enjoy twirling my gymnast Klicky around his pommel horse a load more than standing my runner Minifigure on a black stand.

This seems like an afterthought on LEGO's part.

But I'll probably still get them if I can... sigh...

How 'bout a soccer series just like this? I really hope that this is true. Wow...

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 13 Apr 2012 07:33

I'm disappointed. LEGO have gone into politics.

EDIT: And before you ask, I'm not a great fan of the London Olympic Games.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 08:36

I hope they are not exclusive to the UK.. unless they are adorned with UK flags and what not - then I don't want them.. but if they look like the swimmer in CMF S7 then I want all of them, and I will be pretty mad if they are exclusive to a certain country.. I guess time will tell.

Thanks, Brick Fanatics! These look wonderful. I'm most looking forward to the gymnast and archer, but I think the blue boxer will be most in demand. I just hope they're available in regular shops like Argos and WHSmith's, and not only LEGO Brand Retail.

Posted by coyotelily in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:40

Ooooo thanks for the pics well impressed that's me down at Argos to get a box full.
