Given Hasbro now have Kre-O, there was no way this would ever pass approval, but if/when Hasbro want to broaden Kre-O's appeal beyond boys' toys, you can bet MLP will in there.

I think I've mentioned before that I hope the Dark Bucket will at least convince LEGO to throw some more regular storm troopers into sets. Can't have too many. Maybe they could do a boarding the Tantive IV set or something? That could have Darth and a bunch of troopers...

I knew LEGO wouldn't go with it, but it was worth supporting in hopes of Hasbro taking notice and maybe getting the idea to do their own Ponies in Kre-O.

I think LEGO is hoping to do the black bucket. Their comments don't say this idea won't happen. "They say, this idea won't happen with so many minifigures and such a large figure/brick proportion". I think that if dark bucket was changed to have 10 troopers and tons of bricks it could have some actual hopes.

I would love a licensed bucket or a themed bucket. Behaving like the Creator buckets but with bricks aimed at the theme.

^ I could definitely get behind the idea of a "Creator" type bucket that's aligned with a license theme. A Lord of the Rings bucket with lots of the new bricks would be pretty cool.

What I mean is that I can't understand the appeal of having a bucket with just Minifigures in it. I can imagine it costing several hundred dollars and would not pay that amount just for Minifigures.

My Little Pony should absolutely be a toy and not just a cartoon, guess my old description on my MLP mocs on Brickshelf was right, it was impossible.
I seriously want DESIGN byME instead of Cuusoo, where you could buy stuff without anyone else liking it, and licenses were forbidden, so you wouldn't get disappointed about that.

I hope Lego produces the Dark Bucket and why don't they just put a few speeder bikes, some turrets and change the minifig count to 50? I may not be a fan of Legend of Zelda, but I still would like to see that be made into sets.

I'm assuming Lego didn't just pull the Dark Bucket for one of two reasons:

1. They realize they should've pulled it earlier but didn't, and now feel bad about doing it this close to 10,000. It's the equivalent of letting someone finish a marathon for the moral victory, even though they're dead last. Remember, My Little Pony is a rare case; Lego used to let everything pass 10,000 and then made a decision afterward (see: the Winchester, Firefly).

2. Lego intends to do *something* with it, even if it's not 99 troopers and a Vader. Although the creator dropped off the face of the earth and never added buildable elements despite Lego's request, perhaps they're going to do it on their own. Part of their review could be determining what they need to add to stay within their license, and whether that stays within the spirit of a "dark bucket."

@brickule - I don't think huw's problem is with the existence of My Little Pony, but rather with a Cuusoo idea that clearly would never happen. Regardless of one's personal taste in themes, I think we can all agree that it's a waste of time and energy to have people supporting Cuusoo projects that are dead on arrival. In those instances, they should be pulled as soon as reasonably possible.

@LEGOIndianaMogens - Hasbro makes MLP toys, there are just no MLP building toys.

I can understand Lego pulling the plug on something that could never happen since the IP owner is now also their direct competitor. They should have done this sooner since Hasbro could have garnered some free market research at TLG's expense if they were watching this project.

I think the BTTF project has a shot, but may be postponed until the 30th anniversary of the original film. If this is only a one set thing, Lego could make it sort of like a creator set so you can build any version of the DeLorean, but only one at a time. Of course, then it would need to come with multiple Docs and Martys.

I'd love to see something done with the Zelda project, but not keeping my hopes up due to the licensing and possible conflict with LOTR.

Although I wouldn't personally buy the My Little Pony product (well, maybe for the wife) and was 99% sure it would never fly due to competing licensing, I thought it was well conceived and really appreciate the attention it brought to Cuusoo. I know, like many licensed ideas that attract non LEGO fans, we could argue that most of those persons that register to cuusoo support their license and leave, but there are, I'm sure, plenty of those people that take a minute to support other projects.

My thoughts:

EVE Online Ships - Dunno, don't care.
Back to the Future DeLorean Time Machine - It'd be pretty cool, and fairly reasonable.
The Legend of Zelda - It'd be legit, but somehow I'm doubting it'd happen.
Modular Western Town - I think this has the highest chance of happening, with no licensing to go through, but I doubt I'd buy it with the Avengers and LotR sets having just come out.

Dark Bucket- Whoever it was that suggested themed buckets is a genius. Massive parts packs /with/ minifigs? *delightful shudder*

Who's gonna be the one to tell their wife that they can't live on without My Little Pony Lego?

All I'm really cheering for in the review stage is the modular western town... and honestly that's all I expect to recieve a pass. Eve is just another online game like minecraft, despite the fact that they're two different games, the supporters were 99% players. And guess what, like I predicted, those 99% aren't coughing up a dime for a child's toy. As much as I'd love to see Zelda, Lego can't possibly do it justice in the Cuusoo format. The Delorean has been climbing since Cuusoo was an exclusive Beta, but I'm still not sure why BttF actually deserves a Lego commemorative model. None of the other ideas live up to the Western town. Lego has been on a recent streak of shooting down license related ideas, so I'm not sure how excited they'll be [addressing the others] when there's an obvious option that doesn't need any work.

Correct me if I'm wrong; but Cuusoo stated it would pick ONE, if not the rare two, model(s) to pass review per phase.

LEGO did a Star Wars bucket 7159 back in 2000. It was a pod racer set. I bought lots (20+) for the tan parts. So a similar bucket with some storm troopers is possible.

I don't think that is a fair comparison. The bucket back then was pretty much a set put in a bucket instead of a box, and the later is simply a bunch of minifigures (action figures in Hasbros eyes) jammed into a bucket with no brick build at all.

I'm hoping that the Dark Bucket project will fail, but encourage LEGO to release sets with increased amounts of trooper minifigures. It would also be good if it succeeded and simply included fewer minifigures and a vehicle, but then it would only be available online and we'd be less likely to see a set for each Star Wars faction. Either way, I'm interested to see LEGO's response.

I don't think "Lego should stop wasting time" on any themes, unless they aren't profitable. But, I personally believe any diversity in themes and sets benefit builders who might find a new theme appealing and draw them to legos, or people who like the colors in a theme to build MOC's

I am pleased this project has been archived. Also, if the dark bucket gets 10,000 I don't know that we would need to wait until review to hear no. We've heard no on MLP before it even qualified for review. So, they may be willing to just say no right away. We would have to wait if they wanted to say yes, though.

Not every theme is for everyone, nor should any of us expect it to be. LEGO makes a broad spectrum of product to appeal to as many different people as possible. This is smart business. Also, keep in mind that even if they dropped theme X, it doesn't mean there would be more sets for theme Y. Their strategies don't work that way. If LEGO stopped making Duplo or Friends, it would have no effect on how many Super Heroes sets they produce. So, don't hate the other stuff, just ignore it if it doesn't appeal to you. ;-)

What is the appeal of this idea anyway, other than to combine two toys someone likes?

There are MLP horses and a variety of small, plastic play sets and accessories - houses, stalls, vehicles, combs, etc, etc. my daughter has a bunch of them. if LEGO made this (or Kreo), there would be...... a variety of small plastic play sets and accessories, along with the ponies. only difference is that you build the stuff first? I don't get it.

I mean, obviously, LEGO can be used to replicate pretty much anything, given enough creativity and money, but outside of that what am I missing here? turning plastic toys into plastic toys seems rather pointless to me - you aren't really adding anything. It's like asking LEGO to make a Playmobile set that you first build out of LEGO bricks. If it's the building experience you want, then nothing is stopping you.

At least the other things aren't items that already exist in roughly the same finished form.

I think friends' concept is all right and the sets are gorgeous. But I don't like the inherent sexism in making crappier figures for girls and leaving real figs for boys, and the whole marketing strategy (cuz girls only buy toys in pink boxes, sure!).

MLP as a theme would have been fine, but is of course, impossible. The best alternative is a Kre-O theme, but Kre-O sucks.

Although off topic, I would like to comment on the issue of mini-dolls:

I am a woman and I prefer the mini-figures. As a child I played with lego, but also "polly pockets. The "polly's of the 90's fairly closely match the lego mini dolls. So, while at this age I would not want a mini-doll, I imagine that as an 8-10 year old girl, I would have liked them. While I don't like some aspects of what "friends" represents, I like the idea that Lego researched what some girls might like and tried to deliver it to them. I hope, however, that this means that they do not stop trying to make other sets appealing to all genders.

agreed. this would be a real shame. though admittedly, the entire toy market is VERY gender-splintered. It's a tough challenge to appeal widely enough to both boys and girls with the same item.

@dougts: I agree with your points. It is hard to appeal to both genders, which is why lego (as a theoretically neutral construction toy) can easily appeal to any person of any gender interested in construction. Simple things like including female mini-figures can go a long way.

As a woman, I also like the idea of including women in a variety of settings/occupations/interests, which I see "friends" doing, but want to make sure that Lego doesn't neglect non-friends sets. I think I like the idea of friends, even if only to give people the opportunity to choose what sets they want and what they don't and to give some girls/boys/men/women who might be interested the options friends offers. But what I don't like is the potential to then say "we have the girl line, we don't need to worry about making Lego accessible to 'them' any more" and as a consequence other themes suffer (which is what I meant by "I don't like some aspects of what "friends" represents")

Speaking as a parent, I can also attest that finding non-specific gendered anything (clothes, toys, toothbrushes, etc.) is extremely difficult. I try to promote a variety of interests in my daughter, and try to follow the variety of interests she has (which means she likes trucks and motors, but also playing with her dolls). I hope that when she is older, I can point to Lego as a toy that celebrates with her the different things she enjoys in life and the different interests she has.

Regarding the female minifigure set.

It bothers me that even male figures from city have so few career options. It seems that in LEGO city you are more likely to become a construction worker, police officer, fireman or thief.

CMs are sort of fixing this but would be lovely to have more sets.

But the Lego law office would make an awesome modular building. Especially if it's more Wolfram & Hart, complete with a white room for the senior partners.

An aside, my daughter uses her Polly Pockets, Calico Critters and My Little Ponies (smaller ones from Happy Meals) with her Friends and traditional minifigs. Most kids mix their playthings anyway, Lego might as well cash in on it. She'd love Star Wars sets with the Friends figures. She wants to know which set Eowyn is in though.
