Posted by yellowcastle, 11 Jul 2012 12:13. Filed under Events (USA).

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the sand.....here comes The Rancor!

Along with news on upcoming sets and shows, ign.com has revealed the LEGO Booth calendar for this year's San Diego Comic-Con as well as the Exclusive LEGO Giveaways.  LEGO is giving away 4 promotional figures this year: Marvel Venom, Marvel Phoenix, DC Shazam and DC Bizarro.  There will be 1,000 of each figure available and winners will also qualify for a chance to win other special prizes such as LEGO Batcaves autographed by (my favorite comic book artist ever) Jim Lee!

Here are some other great tidbits that jumped out at me:

    • A whole line of Hobbit sets will be released in December
    • Visitors to SDCC12 will get a sneak peek at one of these new Hobbit sets
    • Visitors to SDCC12 will be able to build their own Bilbo Baggins minifigure via a scavenger hunt
    • Cartoon Network will be airing LEGO Lord of the Rings short videos
    • Visitors to SDCC12 will get a preview of the 2013 DC and MARVEL Superheroes minifigures
    • Visitors to SDCC12 will get a sneak peek of a new 2013 Star Wars set....THE RANCOR PIT!
    • There will be 20 new Star Wars sets for 2013
    • Ninjago is noted as being, "one of the most successful LEGO play themes ever"

Am I the only one kicking myself for not attending this year?  I just don't think my wallet can handle any more great LEGO news. :o)

Update: Our friends over at FBTB have the entire LEGO Press Release posted for the San Diego 2012 Comic Con.  Additionally, FBTB will be attending the show and posting pictures so keep checking back!

Update 2:  LEGO has released a picture of The Rancor Pit!  Thanks to Forum user jawapez for the link.

Shut up and take my money!

Posted by copperwonder96 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 13:01

Uhggg!
There's just no way to stay on budget! I have to decide between LOTR and SWs. I picked LOTR but SWs is in a Golden Age Swing with the minifigs right now. Uhggg!

Wow! That has to be one of the biggest news of the year! The Rancor Pit! Finally! I've been waiting for a LEGO Rancor since 2001! I never really cared about going to Comic-Con, but now, I am so annoyed I'm not able to go!

Posted by aquafreak125 in United Kingdom, 11 Jul 2012 13:07

Not surprised about the Rancor pit, seeing as Jabba's palace has those 4 gaps on the bottom which may be for pillars, but this is some really awesome stuff! :D

Am I the only one who doesn't like Ninjago?

FINALLY A LEGO RANCOR!

Posted by Kez in United Kingdom, 11 Jul 2012 13:12

^^no your not the only one, I also do not like ninjago because it just seems a bit too all over the place.

Posted by bezetkace in Poland, 11 Jul 2012 13:12

No, I also don't like it except Nya and Samurai X minifigures.
Aaand maybe Sensei Wu in white. ^^

OMG A LEGO Rancor it must be the end of days! :O

Posted by Squirrel in United States, 11 Jul 2012 13:17

Lego Rancor, 2013?!? I am going to be seriously ticked off if the world ends before I get my Rancor ;)

Posted by legofanatic2414 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 13:23

This is truly amazing. I am simply astonished at all the great sets we are about to see within the next 3 days! The exclusive minifigures are the highlight for me however. The entire reason I wanted the Marvel line was to get a Venom figure (Hulk-size or not) since he is my favorite Spidey villain. Although, I won't be attending sadly, and I won't be able to receive the Venom. :( On the other hand, I cannot wait to see the new Star Wars and Superhero sets which will come out next year. No doubt some of them will be based on the new Super man and Iron man movies. Either way, I cannot wait for the new Rancor Pit as well sounds great! I will inevitably keep myself posted!

PS. Can anyone snag me a Venom if they go? :)

Posted by George G. in United Kingdom, 11 Jul 2012 13:30

My bets on the Rancor being brick-built rather than a Hulk/Wampa like mold (unlike what we saw in the Padawan Menace DVD) so that there's actually something to build, not just 4 pillars :) I think it'll be like the Lex Luther mech just more animal...

Maybe it will be like the Cuussoo project?

http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/15138

Posted by Modok in United States, 11 Jul 2012 13:37

I'm really jazzed about the Rancor, but I have doubts that it'll be anywhere near as cool as the one on Cuusoo:
http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/15138.

Posted by legofanatic2414 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 13:37

^ Thats amazing. Although it looks a bit too complex for LEGO's standards. Haven't they turned down multiple sets due to their difficult on Cuusoo?

Posted by UtarEmpire in United States, 11 Jul 2012 13:38

Venom? Phoenix? Things are looking good for expansion of the Marvel line...

Posted by orwellian in United States, 11 Jul 2012 13:50

Rancor pit?!?! YES!

I don't even know what to say - this totally has locked in my purchase of Jabba's Palace. That set it much more valuable with a Rancor Pit set to accompany it. I'm curious to see how they support the whole thing on top of it, though. Must be a lot of rock wall in addition to the pillars.

Posted by broomhandle in United States, 11 Jul 2012 13:54

unless you are a kid 5-10 then you prob will not like ninjago.

at the schools, its all the boys talk about.....

however, my son secretly likes city and pretends he likes ninjago at school... haha

CURSES! I am going to be in debt in 2013

Posted by homelesshomie in United States, 11 Jul 2012 14:15

Ok first, why don't i live close to SD, and secondly will anyone on here who is attending mind selling the exclusive figures for a reasonable price, if they don't want them.

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 11 Jul 2012 14:22

Four promotional minifigures...? Wouldn't surprise me (given that they're divided between Marvel and DC characters) if we see them appear in sets during 2013. If there's still a wave of each series slotted for 2013, there's still hope to get these or similar minifigures. Although, I'm still waiting for a Green Lantern set....

Posted by Legolover9531 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 14:23

HOLY CRAP!! The minifigures and the Jar Jar Binks in carbonate are making me regret not going! Not to mention I can't WAIT to see the 2013 superheroes and the Rancor Pit! Maybe next year I'll take a trip to California for Disneyland and Comic Con ;)

Posted by Legolover9531 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 14:25

As for this whole Ninjago debate, a couple of the sets were cool, but I didn't go out of my way for them.

Posted by bionicle212 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 14:31

Can anyone who gos there please say what new marvel sets there will be? Oh and the new figs too.

Posted by Legolover9531 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 14:39

bionicle212, No superhero sets will be on display, just the figures.

Posted by nightmarevalkyrie in United States, 11 Jul 2012 14:55

Hopefully I will be able to get the marvel venom, the others are okay, but I will buy the rest off of people yay hope I win

Posted by Modok in United States, 11 Jul 2012 15:06

@legofanatic2414 - No, I don't believe anything has been rejected from Cuusoo for being too complex. Lego always redesigns a project once it reaches 10,000, so regardless of how complicated the project looks, it's not necessarily what Lego will end up with.

Posted by dustinmroberts in United States, 11 Jul 2012 15:15

Any bets on whether or not these exclusives will be at NYCC as well?

Posted by handsome_skellington in United States, 11 Jul 2012 15:20

I've always wanted to go to Comic Con, because I used to live in San Diego but mostly for the exclusive Lego stuff ;)
Every year, I sort of shrug it off and say "maybe next year," but now all I have to say is...
AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Posted by 18000pieces in United States, 11 Jul 2012 15:26

YESSSSSS. Confirmation that the Marvel and DC lines won't be One Wave Wonders like POTC is the best news I've heard in a long time. Hopefully we'll get an Aquaman!

Plus, Rancor Pit sounds awesome, provided they do it right.

Posted by TinyHippo in United Kingdom, 11 Jul 2012 16:04

I honestly don't think the Venom will be in maxi-fig for this promo-figure. Look at the Hulk promo-release.

Maybe one day down the line, Venom will be his rightful-size, i.e. Maxi. But not now, I propose.

Posted by spency13 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 16:37

Am I the only one that hopes the Rancor is more along the lines of the LotR Cave Troll than an actual buildable structure?

Posted by StarWarrior89 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 16:42

Yes!!!!!!!!!! I can not wait!!!! I wonder If the rancor will be built or a hole figure...? I'm hoping that it will be built because it would have to be a small figure to fit in the small boxes legos come in now! I would HATE if lego took the easy way out and made it the size of the large rock monsters!!! Also lets hope that there will be a Luke Skywalker and a Gamorrean Guard. Now I REALLY need to get Jabba's palace!!! (and the desert skiff) My only question is this, the way how Jabba's Palace is designed, could Jabba's Palace be placed on top of the rancor pit...? Especially since the "hole" to the rancor pit in Jabba's Palace is "covered." Hopefully they will make the rancor pit so it will be able to fit under Jabba's Palace, and re-release Jabba's Palace so there's a HOLE in the hole to the rancor pit!!! They should also have the door able to come down on the rancor!!! YES RANCOR!!!!!!!!!!

Is it to much to hope for a clone factory in 2013

Posted by shaase in Canada, 11 Jul 2012 18:02

Thankfully Lego knew most of us wanted us Rancor to go with the latest batch of SW Minifigs...and they are delivering; I just worry our expectations may be too high. I like the fact the Cuusoo's version the mouth looks like it big enough to bite (hold) a Gamorrean. Wonder if Lego will do the same; similiar to the Great White Shark from the Pirates II theme.

It would also be cool if they somehow figured out how to tie it in to the latest Jabba's Palace (still don't have mine).

Posted by Frederick B. in Norway, 11 Jul 2012 18:27

YAYY! rancor pit:)

Posted by schvatts in United States, 11 Jul 2012 18:28

Lego is starting to irritate me, no joke. If we dont see a Green Lantern in 2013 then my hopes of getting a variation of these other SDCC exclusive figures is diminished greatly. That is where the irritation arrises. How can you create a theme line and then not offer the charactors to everyone? I mean them giving out Bizarro, Shazam, Venom, and Phoeinx to me is like giving if they never made a Darth Maul, or Gimli and then made him a SDCC exclusive. To those of us who are really into the Super Heros line and grew up with the comics these charactors are part of the whole group. It in a way makes me want to turn my back on the entire line, if I can not have all the figures why get any? Seriously,if you could only get eight of the fellowship of the ring why get any?

Sorry for the rant.

Spency13 I am with you. I hope the rancor is more like the troll or castle dragons form 2008 for better stability. If it is brick built I just want it to look right and be solid.

Oh, and I dont care for Ninjago either. It is a true blessing too because with LOTR, Star Wars, and Super Heros I am tapped out. Collectible minifigures dont help the bank either but those saw a decrease in desire this past year with LOTR's arrival. The only other lines that Lego make the would bend me more is GI Joe (and that will never happen) or a Chronicles of Narnia.... the amazing flesh tone mythical charactors would be fantastic.

Posted by xccj in United States, 11 Jul 2012 18:34

I think this is the first that I've heard of the Super Heroes staying around for another year, so that's exciting. Can't wait to see picts from the event. :)

Posted by duilim in Australia, 11 Jul 2012 18:35

^ @schvatts totally agree. I thought that a minifigure Green Latern would have been released in a set by now. I'm not too fussed about the 4 exclusives this year as they're not main characters in the DC and Marvel universe, but I feel your pain nonetheless.

On another note, well there goes my budget for next year! Looks like I'll have to take out a second mortgage at this rate..... thank goodness I'm not into Ninjago but the other three themes are going to kill me...... financially speaking!

Posted by talorien in United States, 11 Jul 2012 19:18

I really hope these figures will be in other sets. Including Green Lantern but especially Shazam!

I thought that I would be able to tune out Ninjago with all the great stuff coming out, but there are certain sets that I feel are/were must haves. Any of the Dragon sets are amazing, along with some of the vehicles. The Samurai Mech is really cool too. I have bought a lot of the Ninjago Spinners on sale for $6 or less. My stepson likes the theme and TV show as well and we have a lot of fun with these sets.

I do understand why they are so popular but I can also understand that they can be a turn off for AFOL and those who remember the Ninja Castle sets of old.

Posted by Legolover9531 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 19:22

Venom is at the top of my minifigure to buy list, then Bizzaro, Phoniex, Shazam.

Posted by Konstantin in United States, 11 Jul 2012 19:43

If you be there, please get some pictures of hobbbit sets.

Posted by Zordboy in Australia, 11 Jul 2012 20:51

Venom and Phoenix and Captain Marvel and Bizarro! Nooooo! They'll be this year's Green Lantern figure, won't they?

Posted by jarolo145 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 21:36

I bet the new Marvel sutheme will be the Fantastic 4!

Posted by Legolover9531 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 21:44

@jarlo145' I would love for the FF to come to LEGO! If I were to predict next year's superhero wave, it would be:

Wave 1 (January): Comic-Based DC and Marvel sets
Wave 2 (April): Iron Man 3
Wave 3 (May): Man of Steel
Wave 4 (October): More comic based sets and Thor 2 sets

Posted by Kalhiki in United States, 11 Jul 2012 22:02

FINALLY!!! The Rancor! I may have to get that set if it's any good. It's the figure I've been waiting for for so long. I may also have to get the new Jabba's Palace so I can display them together.

Posted by el_rey95 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 22:02

Does everyone think the Rancor pit is going to attach to Jabba's Palace? I have a feeling it will be a stand-alone set.

Posted by Zacherano in United States, 11 Jul 2012 22:14

@el_rey95 - The Rancor pit will attach to Jabba's Palace. Weeks ago, the Eurobricks Star Wars blog showed shots of the bottom of the set, indicating that there would be a set attaching below it. Otherwise, Lego would not have left any holes - it just wouldn't have made any sense.

Posted by homelesshomie in United States, 11 Jul 2012 23:16

@nightmarevalkyrie I will give you my luck so that you can win those awesome figures since I live in Ohio.

@Energyarrow I personally think that venom will be in a 2013 set with spider man, so i want the other three.

@Everyone who wants green lantern I also hope and couldn't imagine Lego not putting green lantern in a set also with Sinestro.

Over all i want to see all of the Lego Batman 2 DC Super Heroes minifigures in sets this year.

Posted by legoyt in Australia, 11 Jul 2012 23:20

Yeah. Ninjago. One of lego's most successful themes and Lego wants to stop. It should go as long as star wars.

Posted by legoyt in Australia, 11 Jul 2012 23:23

I just found images of Bizzaro and Phoenix on brickipedia.

Posted by Legolover9531 in United States, 11 Jul 2012 23:32

I'm very impressed with Bizzaro and Phoenix. Bizzaro looks just like the video game, so I assume Shazam will be similar.

Posted by jengafett in United Kingdom, 12 Jul 2012 01:07

I thought ninjago was going to go like atlantis: it started at the beggining of the year, very popular so they made more sets in the summer, but everyone forgot about it in 2012 when they changed it slightly (like skeletons to snakes, except that was popular.) but I am glad ninjago is succesful!

Posted by tamamahm in United States, 12 Jul 2012 04:16

Every 5 year old boy my son knew in prek, knew Ninjago. Ninjago was played on the playground. The kids talked about the new sets coming out. The kids talked about what happened on the episodes. Ninjago has hit playground mode and school fad. Star Wars was the only other item that was as big. By the end of the year, though, Star Wars was rarely mentioned, since all the boy talk/play was Ninjago related.

For me, the main interest in this media release is the Sunday Ninjago info. I am excited about that.

Posted by ickleb in United Kingdom, 12 Jul 2012 08:01

Oh my god. So excited!!! A Lego Rancor!! Can’t wait!! I hope that the rest of the new Star Wars sets are going to be just as amazing….. hmmmm… think I might need a bigger house!!

Posted by Modok in United States, 12 Jul 2012 11:32

That's fascinating how popular Ninjago has become. I had no idea. I wonder why it took off? The game aspect of it? The fact that it's ninjas and snakes? The cartoon supporting it?

And after reading some of these comments, I have a growing sense of dread that the Rancor will in fact be a Cave Troll-sized minifig and not a buildable creature like it should be. Not only would that be the easy way to do it, it would also explain how the entire pit could fit under Jabba's Palace.

Posted by Coolcomedian in Norway, 12 Jul 2012 11:49

Im curious to how lego have thought of the the door killing the rancor thing. Will it be split in two once the door hits it? Will the rancor have a gap in the back to fit the door? Will the door have a gap in it? I'll just have to wait and see...

Posted by mikes0000 in United States, 12 Jul 2012 12:09

Modok is right. Don't get too excited about the Rancor until you see pictures of it. My thought is that Lego is going to put a different paint scheme and different arms on the LOTR Cave Troll and call it the Rancor. Look at the stubby legs and head forward design of the Cave Troll. Attach different arms and that is your official Lego Rancor.

Posted by sitkawitka in United States, 12 Jul 2012 13:43

Ugh u r killing me!!!!! My parents won't take it's too expensive!!!!!! But can any one sneek a picture of that rancor for me I've been dying to an official rancor and maybe get me a venom???????

Posted by yvahee in Belgium, 12 Jul 2012 13:53

My wallet can't take it anymore withe the SW sets. But I hope these time we will have a real big ship. Not like the malevolence who is too small for the price. The minifigures are getting better but I'm quite disappointed with most of the summer sets. I like collecting minifigures but I also like large models.

Posted by lividus in Canada, 13 Jul 2012 00:54

Don't like the Ninjago line either, but they're hitting their target demographic of 5-8 years old perfectly. To me the line has a real lack of direction, whereas really excellent lines die after one wave of releases (Alien Conquest, Adventurers/Egypt, Agents...).

The picture can still be seen on the front page of this article as well as in the relevant discussion in the Brickset Forum. They may ask for them to be pulled but I've so far not seen any requests.

Posted by zipsforbananas in United Kingdom, 13 Jul 2012 13:24

The Rancor is pretty awesome, but I'm so scared that it'll be Lego exploiting AFOLs with ridiculous prices again.
The set look pretty poor too - just one arena, no hole up to the surface, no second door like that one the Rancor gets stuck under. What are the chances of it being the same price as the Wampa cave? (0%? :P)
Saying that, the figures in this and the Jabba's palace are amazing, and the sets do look like good fun. I guess if the sets were £120 together I'd be happier. Thank you Lego for being so awesome! But I just can't justify your prices. :S

Posted by TheConverter15 in United Kingdom, 13 Jul 2012 14:11

Doubt there will be fantastic four, but the Doc Doom minifig is quite cartoony, and Doc Doom was in the Ultimate Spiderman TV show. I predict he'll come with Nova and the plane that they flew in the episode. Also glad about the DKR set, that bane is awesome :D Knew they'd release it :P

Posted by LegoLisa in United States, 14 Jul 2012 05:19

I really need this along with Jabba's palace. Do we know when they are selling Jabba's palace in the US LEGO online store?

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 14 Jul 2012 15:51

I imagined as such, those four holes beneath Jabba's Palace to fit over a Rancor pit were a bit of a give away I thought! The Rancor looks pretty good to me but maybe a little under sized, nevertheless, this looks like a great model to me!

Posted by arl100 in United Kingdom, 14 Jul 2012 15:57

Don't think much of the Rancor Pit, hardly any room for it, let alone any of the other minifigures, and knowing LEGO it will be hideously overpriced. Will pass on this and Jabba's Palace.

Posted by Smith4 in United States, 14 Jul 2012 19:41

this is going to be cool

Posted by iabstract in United States, 14 Jul 2012 20:36

Rancor and minifigs look cool; set looks pretty meh though. Wonder how much this one will be.

Posted by MoonKnight in United States, 14 Jul 2012 22:47

Awesome! Now we need the band with the blue elephant and jabba's palace will be complete! That means that if they make another addition to the palace or a brand new sail barge, they'll need to remake a slave leia minifig.

Posted by StarWarrior89 in United States, 15 Jul 2012 02:16

Some people say there is a major flaw in the design, that the gate can't be lifted up with Jabba's palace on top of the rancor pit. But if you look closely at the edge of the side of the gate, there is a hinge piece, and there is the same thing in the front of Jabba's Palace, so you could pull the back of Jabba's palace away then pull up the gate, or the other way around. So it would still work.

Posted by multiplex in Canada, 15 Jul 2012 09:32

^Good point. I saw another picture on FBTB and it definitely looks like the whole gate aparatus can be detached (or swung open as you have pointed out). If you look closely at the close up pic of the rancor keeper the gate and the main pit do not line up. They are separate entities. I'd post the link but I'm not sure if that is allowed? Someone also posted the underside pic of the palace and after doing a stud count it looks like the gate may not be able to open freely even when the gate piece is swung closed, which is not ideal. But i guess we'll have to wait and see if this is the case. But I have to say I like the idea of the swing gate. Better for playability and displaying IMO. I'm getting the space ready on my shelf :)

So, where's the Ninjago news?

Posted by Rolyat24 in United States, 15 Jul 2012 23:02

@tamamahm: Yeah! I've been waiting all week, and still there is nothing

Posted by alldarker in Netherlands, 16 Jul 2012 08:27

I posted the picture of the holes under Jabba's Palace and the theory about an upcoming Rancor Pit on Eurobricks back on June 8th (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=58035&view=findpost&p=1306495), and also here on Brickset on June 20th (http://www.brickset.com/news/article/?ID=3498). Ever since building the Palace, I have been wondering how they were going to design the inevitable Rancor Pit, and I was glad to see the pictures so soon!

I have to say however that the pictures of The official Rancor Pit I have seen so far have been a let-down. Not because of the size or because of the Rancor, but because of the seeming lack of integration and vision in the designs of the Palace and the Pit.
First of all, the holes / pyramid tabs are not in a square: they are spaced 12 and 14 studs respectively. This means the Palace can only be stacked on the Pit in two different ways, instead of at 90° intervals. Secondly, the hinges on the Palace do not match up with the hinges on the Pit: on the Palace, the holes are on the hinging part, whereas on the Pit, they are not. Thirdly, the limited ways of stacking the Palace on the Pit, in combination with the limited 90° opening of the Pit gate means that the Pit gate is in no way able to support the tower. Fourthly (as has been mentioned above), when the Palace is stacked and the Pit hinges are in the compact position, the portcullis cannot be opened. And lastly, when the Palace is stacked on the Pit, the crossbars between the pyramid tabs severely obstruct 'Jabba's view' through the 8x8 grates in the floor of the Palace. BTW, these last two problems can be 'remedied' slightly by opening the Pit's hinged gate part: allowing for both an unobstructed view AND for a working portcullis play feature, by having the portcullis stick out from under the Palace, but it's going to make the complete structure look even messier than it would do already with just the free-floating tower.

Someone pointed out to me that I mistook which side measures 12 studs and which side measures 14 studs: which means that the Rancor Pit gate will always be to the left or the right side, instead of back or front. This means that although the Rancor gate might in fact support the tower, the 8x8 grate WILL always be partially blocked by a beam, and the tower will still block the portcullis if the gate is folded under it.

@ iabstract: The price for the rancor pit will be $59.99.

what will go under the tower when the main building is on top of the rancor pit?

@dilophosaurus: It is likely that you will have to take it off, or modify it by putting supports under it. Hopefully it will stay up with out the need of supports!!! But I doubt it!!!
