  • No new pirates in 2010!

Miscellaneous news Posted by Huw, Sep 17 2009 3:06PM

It's official: There will be no new Pirates sets next year. The LEGO community team has told Ambassadors: "I do want to let you know though that pirates wasn't designed to be an ongoing theme this time around. Its only going to be on the shelves until second half next year and then it will be done so there's not a new line designed for pirates for 2010".

So stock up while you can.

what???? everyone loved pirates!!! lego is so stupid!! they make such awful decisions lately!!

Ben 10, then this? Who's hiring the people who are making these decisions?

Posted by legowomen1980p in United States, Sep 17 2009 3:36PM:

Lego has been making a lot of dumb decisions lately.. they keep on treating Europe Better than the U.S., Make us equal.. It's Racism against North America!!!!

Aww... Oh well.

P.S. Is there any way to change my nickname?

WHAT?!? That's terrible!!! Just ONE year??? They must be joking!

Disappointment....

@legowoment1980p: No it's not.

Posted by brccoins in United States, Sep 17 2009 4:32PM:

I for one was really looking forward to more pirates next year. We didn't even get an imperial ship to battle the pirate ship. I was hoping they would eventually do another islanders theme too. What a disappointment.

I also don't buy it when LEGO reps say "pirates wasn't designed to be an ongoing theme this time around". They must not have been profitable enough. We'll just have to wait another 10 years for more...

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, Sep 17 2009 4:50PM:

LEGO have to plan theme releases well in advance; the release of Pirates this year was probably an experiment, to see if there was demand for such sets. I think everyone is agreed that it was a success, but they are probably already committed to other themes next year ... planning for future releases is a whole load more complicated than most people realise. I'm certain that Pirates will be making a reappearance in the next couple of years ... and just an observation - Pirates of the Caribbean a Disney franchise, and LEGO & Disney have been getting very chummy recently ...

Posted by I like Lego in Canada, Sep 17 2009 4:53PM:

Well I don't really collect Pirates.and I knew that Lego Pirates was going to end, because there was no summer set's. Oh and Lego is not going to make Sponge Bob Lego sets in 2010.

P.S: Does anybody know if Lego is going to stop making Space Police sets in 2010?

Posted by Gus263 in Brazil, Sep 17 2009 5:17PM:

Since I saw the first pirates sets, I thought in buy at least one. But I think I will not be doing so, because I focused more in other themes, such as Castle (to be honest, just 10193 interested me this year) and Bionicle (and I think in get SP3 sets). But anyways, the Pirates theme wasn't bad. And I think it wouldn't be bad if they could add more sets for the theme. I mean, we have just two factions now. We could have more! It is a pity that Lego decided it. I just want to know what new themes we will have (to scrap the plans of a theme, we need have another one). Could it be "Atlantis" the theme that will "replace" Pirates?

Posted by StarWarsManiac in United States, Sep 17 2009 5:40PM:

I used to collect Pirates Legos but when I had the cheapest three (not including the $3.49 lego sets) they just seemed crummy. So I don't care about them much anymore (but if you have almost all buy the remaining sets so you could sell them on e-bay but if you don't have many like my forget it and go to (duh) STAR WARS! And our new one SPACE POLICE III!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rock and roll everyone (especially I like Lego) because Space Police is awesome!

P.S. I read all the comments and a lot of people say it's a bum, BUT they might be planning SUPER AWESOME Pirates legos next year LIKE a imperial ship brccoins.

I'm not really surprised. I didn't think it was going to well, and I don't think it did do well.

It might not be so bad if it's going to be replaced by the return of LEGO ninjas. (I hope)

Posted by krysto2002 in United States, Sep 17 2009 9:28PM:

Oh well, but they were too pricey anyways...
I just hope they don't do the same thing to SP3 (oh no!)

Posted by 18000pieces in United States, Sep 17 2009 9:47PM:

@Bluemoose, I was having just the same thoughts. What with MegaBlocks' POTC license deal on it's way out, Lego's disney deal on its way in, POTC: On Stranger Tides coming our way, and now this cancellation of the Pirates line, all signs seem to be pointing towards LEGO POTC. Which could be really, really good. Or it could be really, really bad. But either way, having a Jack Sparrow fig would be awesome, and having a Davy Jones fig would be awesome-er, no matter how crappy the rest of the sets might be. I guess we'll just have to wait and see IF it happens, and if it does, how it'll work. But it's a bummer we'll be without pirates for a year.

Edit: @krysto2002 Nah, they wouldn't do that to SPIII. They can't run out of set ideas when they can just do a whole line of Blacktron 3!

Posted by brccoins in United States, Sep 17 2009 9:59PM:

I would definitely sacrifice additional sets from the current pirates theme for a future pirates of the caribbean theme. A black pearl set would be incredible to say the least... Lets keep our fingers crossed!

Posted by rainstorm26 in United States, Sep 17 2009 10:48PM:

I would say that it is a little sad as it appears that the Lego group is going with more licensed type sets (Indy/Star Wars/Toy Story). It doesn't feel right. What if they decide to eliminate the castle line in favor of Narnia. Please lego...don't go down this path. The licensed sets just cost more and gosh darn the non-licensed sets are getting expensive enough even without the licensing.

Posted by GameOn99 in United States, Sep 17 2009 11:54PM:

I like lego: part 1: No more SB, darn
I like lego: part 2: I sure hope not.
StarWarsManiac: Part 2: Nope, I had the same idea you did looking at the catalogs and seeing the soldiers ship looming in the backround, just like volcano base, a teaser we never saw comming. No ship, that would be cool, but I don't think so.

I think that 2010 sounds awsome. You folks who think that the "people" making the theme choises are stupid, just wait and see. You know the saying, don't judge a book by its cover? Sounds more like judging based on the title. It's aroud the corner, let us be anxious.

Posted by thomsedavi in New Zealand, Sep 18 2009 2:45AM:

This is extraordinarily sad news... It doesn't seem like I'll be buying much lego at all in 2010. I was really looking forward to a good run of Pirates lego, at least three years. Every day I hunted around on the internet for leaked pictures of an Imperial ship.

What Lego need to do is focus on solid, ongoing lines. City, Castle, Pirates and Space. They need the sets from one year to be backwardly compatible with sets from previous years - for example, the City sets do this well, but the Space Police really don't fit in with Mars Mission. Things like Toy Story and Prince of Persia are cute, but I'm not going to buy them since they're unlikely to be ongoing themes.

I guess next year I'll be buying a few City sets and any big Exclusive sets I like, but nothing else.

i think lego is going into its dark ages again.
first they cancel this line that they just brought back
then they make the horrible atlantis line that looks like power miners with aqua riders
and then they make yet another fire station for this year and this time there is nothing original in design about it,
its a lot worse than the last one which was pretty good.

last year was fantastic.
this year lego is doing bad in my book up to now.
lets see if they make nice castle sets.
if they discontinue that line too then i will have no interest besides creator (which is making the same sets over and over again) anymore..

Posted by Topsy Cret in Sweden, Sep 18 2009 9:46AM:

Hmm... I think I'll get a few next year. By then, they'll be on sale and I'll have healed from my Emerald Night funds crash.

Posted by Jamboon in Canada, Sep 18 2009 11:00AM:

This is very dissapointing. I was a huge fan of them as a kid and seeing there was a new line of Pirates is what made me come back to Lego. The sets were great and I had a lot of fun with them.

I agree that Pirates of the Carribean sets are very likely considering the new relationship with Disney. Add to that the fact that the Star Wars liscence is ending in 2011 and they will definalty need something big and new. Now, they might very well be great sets but... i dunno... it just doesn't feel quite right to me.

Posted by carding in United Kingdom, Sep 18 2009 11:21AM:

this is... well can't say it but everyone loves pirates and well if lego carried on then they would make seroius cash they really need to work out which themes people like and don't like and play on the themes that people like. if lego reads this then i want £50 cash in hand for business advice!!!!! (seroius)

Posted by ET in United States, Sep 18 2009 12:24PM:

You have GOT to be kidding me! I love Pirates! They CAN'T discontinue it! Lego, PLEASE don't break my heart!!!! :-(

This really ticks me off, we should petition! We want pirates!

@legowomen1980p:
That is the most absurd comment I've heard this week, and I've heard a lot of absurdity this week. It's difficult to determine where to even begin. America isn't a race. You might complain perhaps of nationalism, or continent-ism (which isn't a word, I don't think), if your argument were remotely reasonable, which it is not.

I think bluemoose hit the nail on the head when he said they were testing it for a potential future release. The Pirates of the Caribbean theme is an interesting idea, I just hope that licensed sets do not eventually replace traditional/original themes, like Pirates of the Caribbean replacing Pirates, Atlantis replacing aquaraiders, etc.

@1800pieces:
A Davy Jones minifig would own. And it would be cool to follow SP3 with Blacktron 3.

Posted by monkey man in Canada, Sep 18 2009 1:38PM:

Lego just dropped the ball on this one why woud they discontinue pirates ? It is a very good theme. I was hoping there would be bluecoats and an imperial ship next year. I read that lego is going to discontinue castle next year. I guess I will just be getting star wars and toy story next year.

AH, CENSORED come on lego!

Posted by Sky-guardian in United States, Sep 18 2009 4:58PM:

I'm not into pirates because you pay 100$ for a pirate ship that has 600 pieces. But it was still a good theme. However TLC has discontinued Batman(My favorite), Mars mission(which wasn't that great but better than power miners), Exo-force, and took out all the good agent sets.

Posted by kevin30 in United States, Sep 18 2009 5:10PM:

wow, I thought they were very popular, however I didn't collect them so... too bad. I did like the look of them though. that's unfortunate

I don't know if they will come out with Pirates of the Carribean, but that would be a cool alternitive to the pirates theme.

Shortly before the Space Police III sets were published in germany, I thought about buying the new pirate sets. But then I decided to wait for Space Police III as my new collection line, after Star Wars had become uncollectable. Hopefully, Space Police III will be continued.

Posted by Sharpy in Australia, Sep 19 2009 11:53AM:

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a return of pirates conveniently around the release of the 4th PotC movie... and you never know, if the Toy Story line is successful enough, perhaps a licenced PotC line?

I have read that pirates is just on hiatus, with the 3 constant themes being town, castle and space, but what is the current space release? Is Space Police in the space theme, or is that a seperate sub-theme?

Posted by zx16 in United States, Sep 19 2009 8:05PM:

I think I'm going to boycott lego products this year.

Maybe I'll get the toy story lego since that was my favorite childhood movie but No batman,Pirates and other boring sets coming out lego may be dead to me now.

Posted by Tommy_60 in United States, Sep 19 2009 10:48PM:

Someone said something about Lego Pirates of the Carribean. The Mega Blocks(Or Mega BLECHS! as I like to call them) company has a contract with PotC right now.

Posted by 18000pieces in United States, Sep 20 2009 10:26AM:

I have a feeling that the Mega Blocks contract was made with an eye for POTC stopping at a trilogy - in other words, it's about to be terminated, if it hasn't been already. I don't think that Disney would renew with them, because I'm pretty sure LEGO has a much higher ability to make Disney more money off of them. And that's all Disney cares about.

NO! pirates theme was THE BEST THEME EVER! :-)

Too bad, Pirates really was a wonderful series... Oh well, let's just hope that the disney and Ben 10 sets are as good as we're anticipating!
