New themes for 2013: Speedorz and Legends of Chima

  • New themes for 2013: Speedorz and Legends of Chima

Posted by Huw, 14 Aug 2012 11:56. Filed under New sets.

Two trademarks recently registered by LEGO (1 | 2) reveal what might be the names of forthcoming LEGO themes. We can but speculate what they are but if I had to guess I'd say that Speedorz is some sort of futuristic racing theme and Legends of Chima is a fictional historical theme, perhaps to replace Ninjago in 2014.

A quick Google of 'Legends of Chima' has revealed that there are legends about Chima indians in Trinidadian folklore but whether that's relevant, we'll just have to wait and see...

    What do you think?

(Thanks to nori for the news)

An Amerindian theme would be cool beyond belief - to me, at least.

Posted by Legolover9531 in United States, 14 Aug 2012 12:22

I bet Speedorz will just be a quick cash grab, but Chima sounds interesting.

Posted by Isabella and Lego Liker in United States, 14 Aug 2012 12:27

Speedorz could be the Racers replacement, seeing as there were only 4 racers sets for 2012, and no 2nd wave.

Posted by Skywalker1966 in United States, 14 Aug 2012 12:29

@Legolover: I can agree, Speedorz sounds like Speed Racer meets... actually, it just sounds like Speed Racer. :P I can imagine we'll see a lot car-mounted FFMs. Legends of Chima does sound rather interesting (maybe an island-based theme?), but I'll reserve judgement until we actually see the sets.

Still, both could make good themes. They've at least got cool enough names. :P

EDIT: It just kinda hit me, could Legends of Chima be something like Heroica? A board game series, but in a different setting? The name just sorta reminds me of "The Settlers of Catan", which currently has a Cuusoo project devoted to it.

Posted by LostInTranslation in United Kingdom, 14 Aug 2012 12:31

Intriguing... Chima sounds the more interesting of the two to me.

Also, I translate a lot of trademark stuff at work, I would love it if I got to translate anything to do with these :-)

Posted by nerfman1234 in United States, 14 Aug 2012 12:39

I'm sorry, but those both sound just ridiculous. I guess we'll have to see.

Posted by legomaniac in United States, 14 Aug 2012 12:40

Legends of Chima sounds good. Speedorz sounds lame. Need more licensed cars though :)

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 14 Aug 2012 12:46

Speedorz: Cheesy. :P
Legends of Chima: I thought I read "China" there. :P

Posted by Mighty Wanderer in United States, 14 Aug 2012 12:52

I wonder if Legends of Chima is the theme that Lego was talking about when they referenced a new theme that would make us want Ninjago to have been gone sooner.

Posted by sharky in United States, 14 Aug 2012 12:59

@Skywalker: You're probably right. It makes the most sense that the Legends of Chima would be some kind of Lego game rather than a new theme. I hope to be pleasantly surprised and proved wrong.

Posted by rosney in United States, 14 Aug 2012 13:11

Not to judge a book...but Speedorz? Lame
Chima? A little too close to China imho. Will the bricks for these sets be somewhat translucent and crack easily?

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 14 Aug 2012 13:22

These aren't necessarily themes though. Legends of Chima sounds like a Heroica board game a la Caverns of Nathuz, and one can only hope that Speedorz (ugh!) is a follow-up to the Race 3000 board game or something like that.

Posted by AlphaYoder in United States, 14 Aug 2012 13:26

I feel with some of the better themes out now, like MF, they should focus more time and money on some better and bigger sets for them instead of making another dinky theme that flunks out IMHO.

Posted by TooMuchLEGO in United States, 14 Aug 2012 13:30

Speedorz sounds like the way a little kid would pronounce speeders.

"So there's these people who drive fast on the roads, they are called 'speedorz'."

Legends of Chima sounds kinda interesting. If it were to replace Ninjago I honestly wouldn't care- I lost interest in the theme. I honestly thought it was a typo at first, thinking it read "China"

Posted by max villano in Greece, 14 Aug 2012 13:30

Legends of Chima sounds catchy name but I dont know about Speedorz sounds like a racing theme that apperantly wont be so popular.Well still my bets go to the Legends of Chima and l hope it's not going to be a crazy theme like ninjago with skeletons driving monster trucks, ninjas riding bikes and snakes driving hellicopters.Something more realistic.

Posted by KLOKRIECHER in Germany, 14 Aug 2012 13:33

Awsome! Can't wait for more details! :-)

Posted by Plasmodium in United Kingdom, 14 Aug 2012 13:36

If the real legends of Chima were sort of Central American, will we be seeing the CMF Aztec warrior's headress etc re-used? We all know about how Lego like economising on molds...
However, board games somehow sound more likely.

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 14 Aug 2012 13:50

Speedorz is an appalling name in my opinion, but I will not pass judgement on the theme until we have seen the sets.

Legends of Chima seems intriguing to me, the word Chima sounds oriental so could suggest another theme similar to Ninjago, perhaps something like the older Ninja sets. As mentioned by Huw, UtarEmpire and Plasmodium however, it could also be native American related, which would be absolutely fantastic! A return to the Western theme would be welcome in my opinion.

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 14 Aug 2012 13:53

"Speedorz", being everyone's guess as a racing theme, might not be bad. Of course if it's anything like what Lego is currently offering in their build-racer department then us adults won't like it. I know World Racers was a bit of a swing-and-a-miss for collectors, but if I recall, the Speed Racer and Ferrari sets were never far off the mark when it came to car designs. All we really have to work with is the name... which at our age sounds a bit childish and reminiscent of something hotwheels might call one of their products. If we're looking for something to replace NinjaGo, it'll probably be something like this. Who hasn't been read or shown picture books of cool racing cars when they were young?! I could picture Speedorz being some Cartoon network (lego) show with a bunch of Exo-Force hooligans riding something that looks to the same style of Kai's Blade Cycle (NinjaGo set).

Posted by Town in United States, 14 Aug 2012 14:00

@tensor: that made me laugh, thanks.

Posted by Skywalker1966 in United States, 14 Aug 2012 14:01

@Sharky: Personally, I hope it is something of an "Oriental" theme as opposed to just a board game. NinjaGo was alright in that respect, but I'd love to see a real LEGO dojo... that isn't just a wall. :P I'm kinda thinking something like Orient Expedition, except without Johnny Thunder. Like native people exploring their world or something.

@Ypres: Man, I'm trying to visualize that and, well, all I can say is it looks like something which would be extremely popular with kids. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be a Hot Wheels knock-off. (Like, LEGO doing some "Wheel of Power" thing...)

Well, we've got well over a year until we see anything, so I'll try and reserve judgement. However, I'll say one last thing. Legends of Chima is a cool name, but "Speedorz" is just plain weird. :P

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, 14 Aug 2012 14:19

Speedorz is destined to be another World Racers. Legends of Chima sounds better, but very similar to Ninjago. I hope they'll be proper sets rather than games.
I wish Lego would release some new themes with the intention of them staying in production for more than just one or two waves.

Posted by SpOdys in Russian Federation, 14 Aug 2012 14:22

I don't think this possible Legends of Chima theme is related to that Trinidadian legend. Maybe it will be a theme about conquistadors hunting for the Indian gold?

Posted by itztitoyo in United States, 14 Aug 2012 14:26

At this point, I really hope these are new "in-house" themes. Although I do appreciate some of the licensed themes, I honestly have always preferred the original stuff; Castle, Pirates, Space Police, Agents etc..

Here's hoping for a Knights/Castle revival as well. *crosses fingers*

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 14 Aug 2012 14:30

^Agents was a great series! Here's hoping for another theme like that one in the next couple of years.

Posted by bluelion3 in United States, 14 Aug 2012 14:33

It's interesting to speculate on just a few words. I can't decide if I'm interested until I see the sets.
Don't they do any testing on names? Kids will call them "Speedorkz".
Legends of Chima could be the next Bionicle or Hero Factory.
If it were Legends of Chimay (Belgian pub theme), then I'm in...

Posted by Cjimenes30@ in United States, 14 Aug 2012 14:54

Maybe legends of chima is supposed to be legends of china and it might be another ninja theme since it is replacing ninjago. :P

Posted by max villano in Greece, 14 Aug 2012 15:23

^plz no.....no more ninja themes for christ's sake, cmon lego give us something new!!!

Posted by Kalhiki in United States, 14 Aug 2012 15:47

Hm. Not sure what to think at this moment. Both have potential. Speedorz has my attention. Reminds me a bit of Roboriders for some reason. Plus, if it's space, then that means space cars, and I love space cars.
Legends of Chima... Hm. I think I'm in the minority. I'm having more interest in Speedorz than Chima. Chima has great potential, don't get me wrong, but its name sounding like "China" just makes me think Ninjago. And if it is Ninjago's replacement, why would they have gotten rid of Ninjago if they were going to replace it with another Oriental based theme?
I'll need to wait until more info surfaces.

Posted by devilhead in United States, 14 Aug 2012 15:47

'Speedorz' is cringe worthy, but otherwise, there is nothing to think about.

Posted by NeilJam in United States, 14 Aug 2012 16:30

Is Lego actually ending the Ninjago theme or is that just speculation? I don't understand why they wouldn't continue on with one of their most popular themes.

Posted by legofanatic2414 in United States, 14 Aug 2012 16:58

I'd love to see a revival of the Adventurers theme.

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 14 Aug 2012 16:59

Very interested to find out more about the 'Legends of Chima' one. I hope it is actually some new Historical/Adventurers theme, and not a boardgame or something. I don't know what Chima is, but I think I heard it's something to do with Indians; could it possibly be a new Western theme? Or if it's a spelling error for China, a re-do of Orient Expedition would be superb (although we have just had the Oriental-inspired NinjaGo).

'Speedorz' sounds to me like either a sub theme of Racers, or a replacement for it. I hope I'm wrong, though, and that it's something a lot more interesting! Perhaps something along the lines of Tron, with a futuristic world and all sorts of great Space-y things.

Posted by rosney in United States, 14 Aug 2012 17:02

FINALLY! A Lego theme based around the Colorado Health Information Management Association.

Why has Lego taken so long to realize the potential of this?!?!

Posted by Mighty Wanderer in United States, 14 Aug 2012 17:33

@max villano: I remember back in 2010 or so Lego fans were begging for ninjas again. :P

I don't really care what Chima turns out to be, as long as it's not weird. Speedorz already sounds weird, though.

Posted by OuterRimTradingCo. in Australia, 14 Aug 2012 18:08

Wow, so much negativity based on nothing more than a name. At least LEGO tries to bring something new to the market every year, even if it is just a one shot release to fill a gap in between major theme releases. Let's wait and see what they have in store for us before we write off a theme or release because its name is "weird".

Posted by lego2332 in El Salvador, 14 Aug 2012 18:26

Nothing will ever be so good as Ninjago.... nothing can replace it NOTHING!!!!!

Posted by patch in United Kingdom, 14 Aug 2012 19:00

Hmm.... I really hope Speedorz is a space racing theme, without 'collect all the treasure keys/ancient artefacts/moonstones/golden weapons' gimmicks Lego have been doing recently. Even the new city vehicles have 'Collect them all!' written on the back of the box.
On a side note, perhaps Legends of Chima will have mythological creatures, which I would buy in a heartbeat! :)

Posted by Mighty Wanderer in United States, 14 Aug 2012 20:05

@Sharpy: I'm sorry if that came out wrong, I didn't quite say it right. I meant that the name "Speedorz" sounds kind of weird, not making assumptions about the theme itself. I'm actually looking forward to seeing what the sets are like, but I dislike the name.

Posted by Erinlyn80 in United States, 14 Aug 2012 20:10

replace Ninjago?! You will ruin my 8yr old sons world!

Posted by QwertyLEGO in United States, 14 Aug 2012 20:34

Speedorz!!!

Posted by brixton in Canada, 14 Aug 2012 20:55

Legends of Chima will probably replace Ninjago while Speedorz will most likely replace World Racers or whatever it is that theme is called that no one buys.

I'm excited for the 2013 modular set. I just hope it isn't as large as the 2012 modular because the size of the Town Hall put it out of my price range. I've been waiting for LEGO to come out with these two buildings.

Posted by Dlakii in Australia, 14 Aug 2012 22:23

"Speedorz"

Er, I suspect the Hero Factory/Ninjago naming department has sprung a leak and is spraying all over the rest of LEGO...

Posted by alanyap in Malaysia, 14 Aug 2012 22:24

@Skywalker1966

You're not alone.

Don't get your hopes high fellas. The speedorz might as well turn out to be LEGO company's diversification into boys swimwear industry.

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 14 Aug 2012 22:35

I really hope Legends of Chima is some kind of nature oriented theme. I always wished I could of gotten those old Native American and South American Lego Villages, those were so cool! I love that tree house set with the pirates. I'd like one Lego theme that isn't populated with monster trucks, high speed pursuits, explosions and bad guys :/ We have video games for that ;P
P.S. Regarding the name, I'm confused. Chima? Do you pronounce it Chee-muh? Or Chime-Uh? And while the sets may be great, Speedorz sounds really...lame? The only way I know how to pronounce it is Speed-orwz. I wouldn't be surprised if we got a wabbit themed car ;P
^ Lol :P

Posted by Penkid11 in United States, 14 Aug 2012 23:12

@Erinlyn80 and other Ninjago-don't-go-ers
It's been discussed several times that 2013 is Ninjago's last planned, let me say that again, planned year.

Other than that...
The thoughts of what these series can be that I've heard here are excellent. Orient Expedition/adventurer return would make me cry (I'm not kidding). Now a collectable Space car series would be just plain awesome as well. It will be official that my wallet will never feel the feeling of "full" ever again if this comes to pass :P.

Posted by Alywin in Hong Kong, 15 Aug 2012 01:16

Speedorz means "Speed! orz" So it is going to be a "trendy" theme targeted at kids...

Posted by mars4life in United States, 15 Aug 2012 01:35

Well we can always use more historical themes, if that's what it really is.

Posted by Mickitat in Germany, 15 Aug 2012 04:26

This is becoming Apple-style-fandom. I'd rather wait and be surprised. :)

Posted by lilac_cloud in United Kingdom, 15 Aug 2012 04:36

I read Speedorz as Speedorks! It does sound dorky to me. But, Legends of Chima sounds intriguing! I'm hoping it has to do with Conquistadors or ancient Mayan/Aztec civilization. Please do not be a board game.

Posted by Necaradan666 in Australia, 15 Aug 2012 04:53

Speedorz sounds no worse to me than Ninjago sounded and they turned out pretty great, even moreso after I watched those TV episodes that explained all the weirder stuff that was going on. Story makes the theme.

Posted by Joefish in United Kingdom, 15 Aug 2012 07:08

'Speedorz' sounds to me like a bit of dumb internet-speak so my guess would be some sort of catapult-launched Racers theme with kooky characters (I dread the thought of some other attempt to be non-minifig based) and heavy tie-ins with a web-based game and promotional websites.

'Legends of Chima' doesn't really tell us anything. As has been suggested, it could just be another branch of 'Heroica'. Or it could be a Central American historical minifig thing to replace Ninjago. The connection between Chima Indians and La Brea (the earlier discovered pitch pit in Trinidad & Tobago, not the more famous tar pits in Los Angeles) might imply a host of Pleistocene creatures such as Mammoths and Sabre-Toothed Cats. Even if the history would be completely skewed... We can wonder.

Posted by CCC in United Kingdom, 15 Aug 2012 07:41

Speedorz = Steve Redgrave minifig?

Posted by cool_kid555 in United States, 15 Aug 2012 09:54

Now I like Ninjago, i don't want it to be replaced.

Posted by platinum805 in United States, 15 Aug 2012 11:28

hmmmm..... sounds weird

Posted by AgentWHO in United States, 15 Aug 2012 21:16

Anyone think "Speedorz" sounds somewhat similar to "Slizer"
Personally I think Slizer was a cool theme. So who knows with Speedorz! besides, the name is only a tad dumber then "Ninjago"
Legends of Chima, sounds, different than what LEGO normally does.

Posted by timmyt15 in United States, 16 Aug 2012 08:24

WHAT! they cant replace Ninjago with some silly Indian thingy.

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 16 Aug 2012 09:40

Why would they end Ninjago when it's hugely popular?

The TV show was called...

Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu
Lego Ninjago: Rise of the Snacks

Maybe next year it will be called Ninjago Legends of Chima.

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 16 Aug 2012 15:18

Mmmm rise of the snacks....

But seriously, the ninjago thing might not be a bad call. Certainly makes a lot more sense than amerindian tar pits of hell (read the legend).

Posted by mirandir in Sweden, 17 Aug 2012 03:59

^^It wouldnt be the first time Lego canned a popular theme. They did it to both Power Miners and Atlantis. It seems as only bad sales can affect the planned lifespan of a theme, cutting it short.

Posted by BrickSorcerer in United Kingdom, 17 Aug 2012 06:34

@The Green Brick Giant

Apparently the next Ninjago subtheme is about pirates. Probably to make everyone hate it so much so we love the next theme more.

Posted by jaimix in Chile, 17 Aug 2012 16:01

I think "Legends of Chima" it supossed to be " legends of China", but Legends of China its a name too common for a brand. This theme its sounds to me like this http://www.sluban.com.cn/eng/stzc.asp?id=69 or this http://www.oxfordtoy.co.kr/eng/pro/oxford.asp?p_code=10&g_code=51, or even this http://www.oxfordtoy.co.kr/pro/up_img/3/KCH0842.gif
Sorry my bad english.

Posted by DXninja9000 in United States, 17 Aug 2012 19:51

@ The Green Brick Giant: Ninjago is Pirates next year. I don't think it'll last through 2014, so Legends of Chima is most likely a different theme. Plus, Ninjago is running out of stories for subthemes.

@ BrickSorcerer: I think that the pirates will be the best part of Ninjago. The Snakes and Skellies were OK, but the Pirates are awesome. :P

The comment made by @TheGreenBrickGiant is the most plausible use for "Lengends of Chima" one could think of given how little information we have. We know Lego has something in the works for another batch of NinjaGo and a third Cartoon network season... that's not at all suggesting declining sales. If memory serves, I believe the NinjaGo forecast wasn't predicted past 2013 because Lego wanted an exit strategy before supply outweighed demand. NinjaGo, while I know it's not the case for us adult fans, is a fad among children. One day it will die, but in my opinion that won't be for a long time. Didn't Lego claim NinjaGo was one of their most succesful "in-house" themes ever!?

I don't know why so many "Rumour" sites are claiming NinjaGo will end in 2013 like it's set in stone. Secondly, why is one theme supposedly being released in 2013 to replace NinjaGo? If Lego wanted material for something worthy of potentially replacing NinjaGo, chances are they wouldn't opt for something like the Orient or Samurais because the similarities between the two themes wouldn't be worth scraping the brand "NinjaGo" over. I don't watch the TV show, but the mere fact that it's having a third season is a good sign of its lasting popularity. The wonderful thing about fiction is that you can breathe new life into it with the stroke of a pen.

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 19 Aug 2012 06:47

Ypres I agree. Lego comes out and says NinjaGo is this huge theme, a hit TV show so why end it? It wouldn't make sense.

However Lego ended Bionicle and replaced it with Hero Factory. So anything is possible.

Posted by Brickbot in Ireland, 20 Aug 2012 13:06

The minifigures series often hints at new themes (eg: Monster Fighters). Maybe the Conquistador in Series 8 is hinting at this?
