2013 summary

  • 2013 summary

Posted by Huw, 20 Sep 2012 03:54. Filed under New sets.

I've added the latest batch of set numbers to the database so the outlook for 2013 is becoming clearer. So, building upon the article I posted a few days ago:

    • Galaxy Squad: A new space theme that sounds as if it's been inspired heavily by the excellent 1997 movie Starship Troopers, i.e. space marines fighting 'bugs'. The set names suggest the opponents are some sort of vermin or bugs, don't they.
    • Super Heroes: Ten sets known so far, featuring DC and Marvel super heroes, which, if they appear early in the year and their set names are quoted in the retailers' catalogue, they are probably not related to any forthcoming movie.
    • Lone Ranger: No details known but the theme has been confirmed.

That being the case, I would say that the Space Marines project on Cuusoo is doomed to failure, and the Modular Western Town may pass review but won't be produced until some time after the Lone Ranger sets have ended.

Could't the Modular Western Town be Lone Ranger's Diagon Alley?

Posted by GothamConstructionCo in United Kingdom, 20 Sep 2012 05:44

Will the lone Ranger be franchise based (flesh tone minifigure) or theme based (yellow tone)?

Posted by Redbullgivesuwind in United Kingdom, 20 Sep 2012 06:05

^Its going to be franchise based as there is a movie out at some point next year based upon it.

I want the space enemies to be humans again, last time was Spyrius in 1994 or Robo in 1997. The reason why i wasn't interested in getting any Space Police III sets, was because the enemies were criminal aliens, not Blacktron.
I often changed the Space Skulls in LEGO Digital Designer to be humans, instead of skeletons.

Posted by CCC in United Kingdom, 20 Sep 2012 07:22

So PQ scarab attack plus S7 galaxy patrol = Galaxy Squad.

Posted by ChicoCheco in Norway, 20 Sep 2012 07:30

^^I didnt like the space skulls either. I think we deserve a new space theme. It most will be related to the coosuu project as well as the Galaxy patrol minifig released in series 7. But I really hope it will not gonna be a new action figures instead.

Posted by UtarEmpire in United States, 20 Sep 2012 07:32

Starship Troopers is very far from being an excellent movie.

Posted by nathan.stark in United States, 20 Sep 2012 07:50

^ Glad someone else said it. Even if you aren't comparing it to the book, the only way it's a "good" movie is if you're drinking heavily and just want something to laugh at.

Posted by Starik20X7 in Australia, 20 Sep 2012 08:28

I'm kind of OK with Galaxy Squad meaning the doom of Space Marines. I know that sounds horrible, but the way I see it this way we get the Space Marines theme regardless of its CUUSOO performance. Sad for the guy whose project it is... Maybe LEGO will get him on board as a designer for it. As for Starship Troopers, when I watched it I missed that it was supposed to be satirical so I hated it. I might enjoy it if I watched it again with that knowledge...

"Starship Troopers" is about space fascists... Is that something we want in LEGO form?

Posted by Nightshroud99 in Canada, 20 Sep 2012 09:24

Starship Troopers is a great movie, and no people it's not a Starship Troopers theme. Huw was just making a correlation between the two....

As long as it has some sort of Space Army-esque minifigures I'm game.

Posted by CCC in United Kingdom, 20 Sep 2012 09:29

I wouldn't feel bad for the guy who put Space Marines on cuusoo. After all, the Space Marines were copied from Lego S7 Galaxy Patrol. His additional design part that was on cuusoo is not covered here.

Well so far the news on the 2013 sets is disappointing. The positive of all of it is I can see myself saving some cash and picking up some of the current sets on the market I haven't been able to get yet.

Posted by The BrickKeeper in United States, 20 Sep 2012 10:18

So, Aquaman and the white Batman are not special polybag figs, and we are getting a tan Tumbler! I have a feeling that my wallet will be quite thin next year.

Posted by aaclapham in United Kingdom, 20 Sep 2012 10:24

No news of an Arkham Set? We know there is going to be a Hooded Robin, Joker, Harley, Guard etc released in 2013?!?

Posted by The_Creator in United States, 20 Sep 2012 10:35

*Facepalm* CAN'T TLG MAKE A UNLICENSED WESTERN THEME. I've been wanting a new Western theme forever and now it's licensed so there goes any chance of a unlicensed one :/ and even if Modular Western Town
is approved it probably won't be produced till LR ends...
Looks like I might be buying space, sounds very promising :D

Posted by peterlmorris in United States, 20 Sep 2012 10:38

Oh man I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Starship Troopers is not an excellent movie (it's not even good as satire). I read that and was like, "Whoa, Huw, are you feeling OK?"

I'm surprised no one is pointing out that the new theme sounds like a reboot of the Insectoids space theme. That's the first thing I thought of when I heard about it.

I don't care what it is. Space is space. All parts are space parts, but it's great to get actual space sets. Long live SPACE!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 20 Sep 2012 10:53

^ It has a score of 7.7 at IMDB so I'm by no means the only one that thinks it's good. I guess it might depend on whether you saw it when it first came out, or more recently because you weren't old enough in 1997 :-)

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 20 Sep 2012 11:15

Loved Starship Troopers (different from the book but some elements there). Not a great film but campy, b-movie fun! Hope the Galaxy Squad's have power armored/mech like suits (which Starship Troopers movie shoulda' had).

Posted by The_Rizulli in United States, 20 Sep 2012 11:17

Although I was kind of hoping for some kind of an exploration-based space theme, I am still super jazzed for Galaxy Squad! Agreed that it sounds like an Insectoids redux. Insectoids was an interesting concept that could have used better execution; this may be that better execution. Keeping my fingers crossed for large brick-built space bugs.

Also, Starship Troopers, while not without its flaws, is an incredibly entertaining space action movie with some fun satirical elements. I love it unironically. Whew! Now I feel better. :-)

Posted by brixton in Canada, 20 Sep 2012 11:29

Galaxy Squad sounds like a great theme but I really have to see photos before making a decision on whether or not it's worth buying.

Four of the Superhero sets sound amazing: Batman vs. Bane - Chase with Tumbler, Superman Metropolis Showdown, Superman Battle of Smallville, Spider-Man Hunting with Spider-Cycle and Spider-Man Mission at Daily Bugle. Again, I'm the wait and see type. I'll need to see photos before making a final decision.

I agree with a lot of the commentators here. I'd prefer a Western theme rather than a Western license. I feel the license limits the designers creativity to what's in the movie. The theme allows for more creativity and maybe even better sets. Plus, I prefer the yellow mini-figures.

Posted by brixton in Canada, 20 Sep 2012 11:36

I'm actually hoping Galaxy Squad is nothing like Insectoids. I will pass on the theme if it is.

Posted by peterlmorris in United States, 20 Sep 2012 12:47

^Have you ever seen the Battlebugs group on Flickr? If the sets are in that vein, then it'll be a great theme.

Posted by vexorian in Bolivia, 20 Sep 2012 13:20

Between Lone Ranger and TMNT, I can officially claim that licensed themes have jumped the shark.

Posted by NeilJam in United States, 20 Sep 2012 13:28

I think the sets featuring Iron Man could possibly be movie themed with Iron Man 3 scheduled for release in May 2013, and the "Marvel 4" set name might be a placeholder (maybe to avoid a spoiler) as it is numbered between the two Iron Man sets listed.

I was really hoping to see more Marvel characters. If there are any new ones in the other sets then it appears Lego will be using the typical action figure marketing ploy for the Super Heroes line. You want a new character? Then you have to buy yet another Spider-Man or Batman to get it.

Also, again, the lack of X-Men (with dozens of characters they could feature) is severely disappointing.

Posted by withinfourwalls in United States, 20 Sep 2012 14:02

Marvel 4 = Fantastic 4 ??

Posted by cinemajay in United States, 20 Sep 2012 14:13

Galaxy Squad sounds cool. Lone Ranger could be too, but I have concerns for it becoming the next Prince of Persia.

I still think TMNT could be really fun. The new action figures that just came out are amazing and among the best I've seen in a long while.

Plus (and it's been said before) LEGO TECHNODROME people. It's a freakin' DEATH STAR ON WHEELS!!!!!!!

Posted by cinemajay in United States, 20 Sep 2012 14:17

P.S. if Galaxy Squad DOES turn out to be insectoids, they could benefit from being a little more "metal", if you know what I mean:

Posted by Okay in United States, 20 Sep 2012 15:25

Uhm, you're joking about the Super Heroes sets, right Huw? There's no way the Superman and Iron Man sets are not movie related, especially since they involve things like the Extremis armor and Malibu Mansion.

Posted by Flecski in United Kingdom, 20 Sep 2012 16:30

Starship Troopers is like Robocop for the 90's. Verhoeven did a great job on it. I love the line where someone's head is blown off and someone else just shouts 'medic!'.
I can't say I watched the sequel(s?)

The Superhero sets look pretty vague in which minifigures come in them. Although, some seem like no brainers (especially, the Arctic Batman, Mr. Freeze and Aqua man set) but others take some guessing. All I care about is which set comes with Venom, the Daily Bugle or the "Spider-cycle". Anyone here watch that new Spider-man show? So you could tell us if any of these ring a bell to any episodes?

Posted by cinemajay in United States, 20 Sep 2012 17:18

To hit home Okay's point, Superman and Iron Man are def. movie tie-ins sets.

[SPOILERS]

The Extremis armor has already been revealed to appear in IM3: http://splashpage.mtv.com/2012/07/03/iron-man-3-concept-art-extremis/

And the name of the Phantom Zone from Superman lore is apparently being called the "Black Zone". No one can be sure until more details come out, but the Superman set "Black Zero Escape" sounds awfully close.

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 20 Sep 2012 17:20

I am really hoping we get the other DC sets, for instance Arkham Asylum sooner rather than later!

Posted by aquafreak125 in United Kingdom, 20 Sep 2012 17:23

Why is it that every £12 Superheroes System set involves a cycle? Not that it will stop me from buying :D
These sets sound really awesome, I'm glad the superhero prices aren't sky high either :)
I still can't believe there's not an official Hobbit sets list though!

Posted by SapmiSatan in Norway, 20 Sep 2012 17:26

From what I've read on Wikipedia about US-M, the Daily Bugle set will feature Beetle. I think Venom might be in the Spider-Cycle set, but I don't really know.

The Iron Man sets are all IM3, I think, while the Superman sets might be both comic and film based(like Batman). I hope we get some parts of Metropolis, and that it's not like "Batwing Battle Over Gotham City"...

Posted by Modok in United States, 20 Sep 2012 18:00

@ CCC - Space Marines wasn't "copied" from the Galaxy Patrol minifig. It was a theme specifically designed FOR the Galaxy Patrol minifig. The project's creator has openly and repeatedly stated that he made no changes to the minifig (except the color) so that it would have a better chance at production.

It's extremely glib and callous to claim that you wouldn't feel badly for someone who finds out that their project--the most-supported one on Cuusoo--may be doomed to rejection. Regardless of whether you like the project, it would be devastating for anyone to make it that far only to have the rug pulled out from under them.

Posted by Okay in United States, 20 Sep 2012 19:39

Black Zero is a Superman villain, not a nickname for the Phantom Zone. He's too obscure to be a character that TLG would choose to put into a set, so he must be in the Man of Steel movie (which is odd since that movie is said to feature General Zod as the villain).

And yes, Venom comes in the Spider-Cycle set, along with Nick Fury with his flying car or whatever.

Posted by chrismajor2124 in United States, 20 Sep 2012 20:05

I expected Galaxy Squad, from the set names, to be a new "Insectoids" type theme.

Posted by Town in United States, 20 Sep 2012 20:25

Still don't think the TMNT will come out in '13 because the movie got pushed back until Summer '14. Could be Winter '13... doubt it though.

Love Starship Troopers, but don't watch the sequels, you'll regret it.

Posted by Okay in United States, 20 Sep 2012 20:41

TMNT is based on the Nickelodeon cartoon that starts in a week, so '13 is a good time to release it. Besides, if it came out in '14, how would we already know about it?

I agree about the Starship Troopers sequels though... terrible, just terrible.

Posted by vexorian in Bolivia, 20 Sep 2012 21:32

The CUSOO space marine projects initially used different marine designs. They were just later adapted to use the Galaxy patrol's armor once the Galaxy patrol was announced.

Translations are iffy, but for the most part, we have as best a picture of what 2013 will bring us without pictures available.

One question: why do people keep thinking Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a 2013 theme? I don't recall any of these "spy reports" mentioning the sight of TMNT in the retailer catalogs. As far as I know, this is still a rumor that has been passed around so much people think it is official. But correct me if I am wrong.

Posted by BlackRabbit in Canada, 20 Sep 2012 23:40

Why do all the space themes have to be about massacring anyone that looks different. Just because they're "Aliens" doesn't make the theme not violent.

Posted by ninjagoyo in United States, 21 Sep 2012 01:56

Because kids aren't clamoring for LEGO Model U.N. and LEGO Peace Corps. Deal with it.
Although I would totally go for LEGO Model U.N. as an excuse to get military--excuse me, PEACEKEEPING-- vehicles and tons of parts in Maersk Blue (which is pretty much UN Blue, right?).

Posted by Okay in United States, 21 Sep 2012 14:07

Yes, TMNT is merely a rumor for now, but it comes from several reliable sources, so it must be true, plus it seems plausible for TLG to have a theme based on it for various reasons.
