    Thinking of buying the new B-Wing? Brickset member cavegod built it a few weeks ago (and will be bringing it to GWLS at the weekend I believe) and you may recall he wrote a brief review.

    Now that it's out 'in the wild', a couple of other reviews have surfaced that will help your buying decision:

     

    Between the two you should be able to determine if it's the set for you. The reviews are actually mixed: Ace's review as an experienced LEGO builder and owner (I suspect) of most SW sets, finds flaws in its design and build, whereas the Jedi News review is more positive, perhaps because to the reviewer, all LEGO Star Wars is cool regardless of any minor niggles. Read them both and make up your own mind.

    Do you have it? What do you think of it?

    I'm still undecided whether to buy it or not. I don't usually buy the large UCS models because (a) I find I can't be bothered to build the ones I do have, and (b) what do you do with them once they are built, other than let them gather dust??

@Huw, I'm curious as to your (b): what do you do with all other non-UCS models once built?

Because (b) is my problem with *all* LEGO sets. (Actually, mine don't collect dust because 10-30 days after I've finished them, I pack them in zip bags and store them for months (actually, years) before building them again.)

^ I have some glass doored display shelves (Ikea Billy, deep shelved version) that house a year's worth of normal sets but the UCS ones don't fit in them.

I also pack my sets away as you describe. I have a house full of zip-lock bags full of them!

Huw, those are the exact same shelves I use to display my Lego sets. All of them, except my UCS sets, fit quite well in the deep shelves. Even the Millennium Falcon sits nicely behind the glass.

As for this B-Wing, I will pass on it. Cavegod's review clinched my impressions of the set.

When I first learned about this set, a few months ago or so, I was super excited. However, in the past couple of weeks leading up to the actual release, I found myself looking at it more and more and losing my excitement. I must say, now that it has been released, I am disappointed with this set. My biggest issue is the price. But let me follow that with saying I have no problem paying for something that I find value in. I am just not seeing the value here though.

I have not read either of the reviews yet (but I will this week), but here is why I am probably not going to pick this one up. Earlier this year they released 10225: R2-D2 for $179.99. For me, this was a great build with a lot of pieces (2127). Matter of fact, I liked it so much, I actually went and purchased a second one. Fast forward a little and here we are looking at the B-Wing. Looks like it would be an ok build, but not nearly as fun as R2. It's priced at $199.99, which I have no issue paying for as I purchased Town Hall when it came out (which has 2766 pieces). But here we are with the B-Wing and it only has 1487 pieces.

I am sure that there is a reason behind it, and I sure would like to know what it is to clear my confusion. But for right now, I simply don't see the value here and will more than likely not end up with a B-Wing next to the rest of my UCS collection.

@Huw... LOL, no I wish I had the UCS Falcon. I just have the latest version, 7965. The UCS sets I have are the Star Destroyer and the Super Star Destroyer; both are dust magnets and I'm looking at ways to enclose them.

^^jaypwillie; You have hit the nail on the head, I too would love to know Lego's pricing strategy. I have most of the UCS and modular sets and have found they all were easy to buy, in that I didn't have to think are they worth the money for what you get. But this one just doesn't do it for me, not at this price anyway.

I don't understand the price to piece count argument. Different pieces cost different amounts. Why not some other measurement that is more meaningful? Maybe surface area? Dimensions? Cool factor? For me, I am a collector and will get all UCS sets no matter what (but never pay full price). I do like this set and look forward to adding it to my collection. I was surprised to see a relatively esoteric ship getting the UCS treatment, but so be it!

Im very confused to the pricing methods used! I'd suggest it may have something to do with weight but I'm guessing R2 weighs more so that's probably not it. They have me hook line and sinker as I've so far collected all the UCS sets so will end up coughing up much to the dismay of my wallet! I would like to know if anyone has found an affective way of displaying UCS set? Been looking into acrilic custom made cases.

The whole point of the UCS sets is that they look damned cool on display. When people come over to your place, they see them and are "wow! thats cool". It validates that your hobby is not actually a childs game - which most builders don't care about, but its nice for friends and family to be impressed by it.

Just dust them once in a while.

The B-Wing will be my 15th large Star Wars model. I also bought a few non-UCS sets, because I thought they ought to be one (f.e. Sandcrawler).

All 15 models are great in my opinion, but building them doesn't satfisfy the same way at all models. The AT-ST is a small one, but really fun to build. Some larger models like the 2 Star Destroyers are les fun to build.

I don't yet know what it will be like with the B-wing. But I did order it, and I think it'll hit my house in about 24 hours!!!

Having built this model I can with confidence say that it represent the very best the UCS series has to offer: It is BIG, beautiful and detailed!

If you want minifiigs or play features don't look here. But if you want one of the most faithfully Lego recreations of a film model ever - then get this!

I usually mod my UCS models to make them even more accurate. And yes, I have also modded this B-wing, but it only a very few bricks - this is the best recommendation I can give ;)

I recieved this model yesterday and quickly set about building it. I tend to build slowly and methodically, examining every part and instruction step............in order to make modifications with spare parts if required. I added a rebel pilot to the cockpit to get a feeling of scale. The bottom of the seat rests on two small blue plates, each with a single stud on it and then a beige plate rests on this. In order to fit the pilot correctly I replaced the previously mentioned plates with two light grey 2 by 2 plates and the figure sits very well and looks the part.
I am working on a way of creating a more sturdy join between the two large curved pieces at the top of the wing where it joins the main hull..................and so on. Yes the set has it's flaws but in my opinion thats the beauty of the set. It allows you to correct the flaws, which for me, is part of the joy of building lego sets.
I think it is a great set and I would recommend it to anyone.
