The Hobbit sets revealed at last

  • The Hobbit sets revealed at last

Posted by Huw, 06 Oct 2012 12:45. Filed under New sets.

While at GWLS today I was bombarded with emails about this poster that's surfaced from somewhere. (thank you everyone, including supersympa who was first, for keeping me informed!)

It's a bit lo-res but you can just about make out what they'll be like.

Sorry I can't attribute the original source but it's certainly appeared at The Brick Fan and also at YouTube.

Hopefully someone will do a decent scan of it soon. If you know more about it, or if there is one out there already, please post in the comments.

Update: Missingno has provided some great scans on flickr. I've added them here (I hope he doesn't mind :-) ) but check out his gallery for higher-resolution versions.

Man, I don't know if I can affford Lego anymore, they just keep making more and more stuff to buy (These sets look awesome though)

Posted by ntwest in United States, 06 Oct 2012 13:15

Finally! Some clue about the upcoming sets

Posted by Firox 5000 in United Kingdom, 06 Oct 2012 13:16

From I can pick out, these sets look amazing and are must buys in my book.

Posted by Tormentalous in United States, 06 Oct 2012 13:21

I'm the admin for The Brick Fan and the source I got it from was Reddit which I gave credit to. The user received the poster by doing a deed for Toys R Us. I'm thinking it might be given away with a purchase but I can't confirm that yet. I'll be heading to TRU a little later today to see how to get the poster.

Biblo and Gollum, Hobbit Hole, Warg Attack, Goblin Throne-Room, Spider Attack, and.. I don't recall where that last place is seems to be. The place they escape from in barrels, though.

That's what I see. It's been years since I read it, though, so I don't know...

EDIT: Ah, I think the last place is the Elfin fortress place?

And from what I can tell these are the figs:

-Bilbo and Gollum
-Bilbo, Gandalf, 4 dwarves
-2 wargs, 2 goblins including the warg-rider, and three dwarves (one in the tree)
-cave troll, Gandalf, assorted goblins and dwarves (stupid glare... I'm guessing 2 goblins though, and four dwarves, one of which could be Bilbo instead)
-2 spiders, Bilbo, 2 elfs, and a dwarve
-I can only make out Bilbo and the elf, but I'd guess the other figs would be another elf and the last two dwarves

Looks like these are scenes from the first movie only. The last set (the big one) looks like Barrels out of Bondage. Not sure where Part 1 cuts off but I'd bet about there. That means we will see a 2nd round of sets and maybe a 3rd. Hopefully Smaug (the dragon) will be impressively huge!

Posted by kmvk83 in Netherlands, 06 Oct 2012 14:00

The last set on the poster is (not the biggist one, that would be the Goblin king battle) a special hobbit triology preview set. So my gess would be that this particular scene will be in the second movie.

Overall, the sets are a bit dissapointing in my opinion.
I like the Baggend set very much. Are eager to see the spiderweb up close. And probobly want more than one set of the warg attack, just for the wargs. But all the rest?
Maybe it will come to live a bit more after seeing the movie(s).

Nice to see Legolas has managed to get himself in one of the hobbit sets. At least the elf looks like him.

Posted by Mcotter in United Kingdom, 06 Oct 2012 14:08

I totally agree with kmvk83. To me, it seems that Lego are taking a much more child like approach to their sets, with the exception of Bag End. And the same applies to the Batman sets such as the Lego Batcave 6860 with Bane on a bright red tank which looks more like duplo than Lego to me. Common Lego!!!!!! try and make the sets look a little bit more intricate and more adult like. You did great with the new Batman Arkum Asylum but see if u can make more of the sets more grown up and better like they used to be.

Posted by JaseTJ in United States, 06 Oct 2012 14:45

Guess what, guys? Lego... believe it or not... is targeted primarily at kids! Stop whining and be thankful we're getting so many great sets.

In my opinion the sets don't look childish, just play-able, which is all fine and great. If you want it to look better and don't care so much about playability, then mod it a bit. That's what Legos are for ;)

I think the last one, Barrels out of Bondage, looks the best out of the new ones (Probably tied with Bag End, but that one's not as new.) I still don't have any of those spiral staircases, it comes with 3 bottles and 2 wine glasses, it looks like, and two of those elf-weapons that the promotional Elrond 'fig has.

Gah, I can't wait until better pictures come out...

Posted by Carnigee77 in United States, 06 Oct 2012 15:08

Hmmm... Don't get me wrong, they look amazing, I guess they simply couldn't meet my through the roof expectations. But since I am more of a builder than a collector, I'll try to get as many as possible, if only for the parts. (p.s., anybody spot any new parts?)

Posted by ninjagoyo in United States, 06 Oct 2012 15:22

Other than Bag End, these sets look abysmal. Random jumble of pieces, throw in enough minifigs, TA-DA! It's a set!
I thought the LOTR sets were like skimpy clutters of props ... wow, these make those look like fully realized three-dimensional MOCs by comparison.

Posted by stevesnas in United Kingdom, 06 Oct 2012 16:11

Interesting both, the spider of mirkwood and barrel out of bond set, both have that red strip above saying something like special hobbit trilogy preview set. Guess that means first film will be split after the dwarves in the tree bit. I suppose beorns house for those who know the book.

Thinking about it, as it was only meant to be a 2 film thing, and Peter Jackson recently decided to go to 3 films. I bet originally the split was meant to be after the barrel bit, and Lego built sets based on that premise and got stuck with 2 sets in limbo as it where.

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 06 Oct 2012 16:20

They have managed to keep most of those under wraps for a very long time, not quite as long as Palpatine's Arrest however. They look good to me, but I will sit on the fence a little until some clearer pictures are revealed.

Posted by Venunder in United Kingdom, 06 Oct 2012 16:42

I'm going to NEED at least three of the Warg sets... :) Those doggies just look so darn cute...

I'll probably NEED at least 2 of the Mirkwood Spiders and Flies set, for the Elves. :)

Just one each of the other sets should be enough.....

Posted by Carnigee77 in United States, 06 Oct 2012 16:52

I really hope the prices reviled earlier are incorrect. 40$ for that Mirkwood set!?!?! This is ridiculous!

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I only count 9 dwarfs....

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 06 Oct 2012 17:07

They all look really bad.

We've got a stupid looking cave, and two sets featuring trees. The bottom right image just looks like the interior to some tavern... which is really boring. I'm not made of money, so there's no chance I'll buy these unless the stores are giving them away. We've already seen the top left hutt, that's probably the best one by far. I thought The Hobbit had better scenes than those???

Posted by stevesnas in United Kingdom, 06 Oct 2012 17:18

Kili and fili -spiders
Thorin and bifur - wargs
Nori and dori - goblin king
Dwalin, balin, bofur, bombur - bag end
Ori, oin , gloin - 2 of these are in barrels 1 is in goblin king set.
Can't work it out probably Ori

Posted by Dragon_Master_48 in United States, 06 Oct 2012 17:44

Yeeeaaah!

Hobbit for the win!

The wargs look pretty good...

Posted by jadblz in United States, 06 Oct 2012 18:29

You get the poster from toys r us when you buy any Lego game FYI. I saw them last week, but thought nothing of it. They were folded and I could only see the scene side. They look cool, sadly not a fan of the hobbit or lotr but may have to pick up the dog one!

Posted by Starwarsgeek500 in United States, 06 Oct 2012 19:14

I might buy some of these just for the parts...

Thanks, Almaras!

Posted by namioik in United States, 06 Oct 2012 20:01

These sets are not as great as anticipated......other than Bag End, these sets are a bust. #sigh

Posted by larsnelson in United States, 07 Oct 2012 00:50

New parts

Brown and Olive tree branch pieces.
Tan mushrooms
Orc armor new color of Ninjago piece
Goblin king is new and he has a crown that is new.
Goblin head piece in this set is new.

Obviously Wargs, Orcs, Elves, including a female
And new pieces in Bag End talked about previously.

These sets are awesome; once you see them in the store you realize how good they are.
It would be nice to see the eagles being made and some flying deer from Mirkwood.

Posted by schvatts in United States, 07 Oct 2012 02:18

I really like these sets.... except riddle for the ring its to plain, but an actual part of the story. The Wargs attack is fantastic. I REAL hope the wargs mouths close. I think Shelob is the best brick build spider ever and these new spiders are weak in comparison, but the set its self to me is good. I can always upgrade the spiders.

I find it funny that some of the sets say they are sneak peeks of the second movie. Those depicted scenes were originally going to me in the first movie, but that was when they were only making two. All the "sneak peek" tells me is "oops, no time to change the sets now".

I am also hoping we will see battlepacks with the godor, the men of the east, orcs, and so on.

Posted by wallybreit in United States, 07 Oct 2012 03:22

I think these look great! They seem to be based on a number of memorable and pivotal scenes from the story, and they look like they have some great new pieces and minifigs.

To all those who are disappointed: Are there other scenes you were expecting or hoping for? Or just different features on the sets? I curious as to what you would do differently if the design were up to you.

Posted by Zelyonii-Zaktan in Russian Federation, 07 Oct 2012 03:33

This Gollum in the smallest set has a new face print which seems more recognisable!
I also like the set with barrels because of a drunken elf.))

Posted by Almaras22 in Australia, 07 Oct 2012 03:43

While these sets look great, they've left me a little disappointed. When An Unexpected Gathering was released, I was blown away! It looked incredible, and I still can't wait to explore it! So I've been eagerly awaiting these images, but I feel let down - they just seem to be lacking the WOW! effect that the first wave had! I guess we have to wait for more detailed pictures to be released, but they don't seem to have the little details (Bagend excepted) that make them so exciting to explore. The Attack of the Wargs looks like a good set to have multiples of (finances pending :( ) as there is nothing specific that would make it look weird to have two or three of - a general tree that would be easy to mod and a bigger group of wargs sounds great! But the Goblin King Battle and the Barrel Escape sets look unfinished - this could leave awesome opportunities for MOCing though! As for other scenes - I was (and still am!) really hoping for a Rivendell set! This could come up in either future tLotR or the Hobbit waves, so I remain hopeful! Also - dying for a lego Smaug!! :D

Posted by kmvk83 in Netherlands, 07 Oct 2012 04:54

I have slept over it, and still I am dissapointed.
For some reason I get a Harry Potter Flashback. Love the books and the movies, but the LEGO sets didn't caught the magic. As far as I know, most other LEGO fans got the same feeling (or rather they didn't).
Same goes for the new Hobbitsets. Bits and peaces of the movie, but not the coolness like the LotR or Star Wars sets.

Maybe the 2013summersets will be better.

Posted by DarthZared in United Kingdom, 07 Oct 2012 05:12

Set numbers below:

79000 Riddles For The Ring
79001 Escape from Mirkwood Spiders
79002 Attack Of The Wargs
79003 An Unexpected Gathering (We have good pics for this anyway)
79004 Barrel Escape
79010 The Goblin King Battle

I'm not a LOTR or Hobbit fan but I'm sure the huge amount of fans backing the theme will definitely make TLG happy!

Posted by ericjohn in United States, 07 Oct 2012 07:21

The Toys R Us learning toys advert says that you need to spend $20 on LEGO board games to get this poster, which are 20% off from October 5- October 27 in the States.

Posted by citruscaesar in United Kingdom, 07 Oct 2012 07:29

I think these sets all look great! Sooo excited for them! Especially for the minifigs xD

I don't think they look underwhelming at all- I'd say they are pretty consistent with the usual quality of Lego themes. Perhaps when the film comes out it will endear people some more? :P

All I desire now is for Lego to release some new LOTR sets with the characters I so desperately want. The Witch King perhaps, or Saruman? Hopefully, if we get 3 waves of Hobbit sets for the films, they'll squeeze in some more LOTR ones too xD

Posted by sadosed in United States, 07 Oct 2012 09:29

The interesting things I am finding on these sets and the Arkham Set is many advanced building techniques that I have been seeing on MOC's over the past few years. Look at the Barrel Escape set. Look how they did the archway with the brown "Tree Limb" and angled pieces. Now looking at the Arkham Set the gargoyles are made from axes, frogs and a few other various pieces. It will be a good time playing with these in my household.

Posted by rnsrobot in Canada, 07 Oct 2012 11:50

I thought Transformers fans were whiny. Yeeesh.
Money's tight with school next year, and I want to get Haunted House & Arkham... Definitely buying Bag End. Might buy the tree if it's not overpriced. I like LEGO trees, and it looks like Thorin comes with it, plus blue fire, sweet goblins, and Wargs! I quite like Barrel Escape if reasonably priced... nice colors, fun layout, and drunk elves. That soused elf face is great. =)

Posted by norwegiagirl in United States, 07 Oct 2012 12:09

We were at Toys R Us this morning and the in-store advertising said the poster was free with a $20 LEGO board game purchase. Also said the poster was a $4.99 value which is debatable in my opinion.

Yes finaly in can`t deside which is the best :,)

Posted by Jake43 in United States, 07 Oct 2012 14:30

These sets all look fantastic. Really hoping that Lego will continue not only with the Hobbit sets, but also more LOTR sets. They have so many great things to work with. I also agree that battle packs of Gondorian soldiers, Elven soldiers, Easterlings+Haradrim, and Orcs would be awesome.

These sets look a little bit... skimpy if I must say. Honestly, I would believe it ridiculous if any of them except the goblins and bag end are priced over $30. I hope the sets for part 2 will be more substantial.

Posted by captain radda radda in United States, 07 Oct 2012 20:07

I can honestly say that I'm a little disappointed with these sets. I think after the first wave of LOTR blew me out of the water, I had high expectations for these sets, but i was disappointed badly. The wargs look cool, of course, Bag End looks phenomenal, but the rest, as others have said, look thrown together. Its almost as if TLG just said, "Hey, let's just throw together some well designed portions in a circle and leave it incomplete but sell it at full price anyway!" Hey, at least I get to buy all of the superheroes sets now!

Posted by ambrose in Australia, 07 Oct 2012 22:38

this is awesome, are these preliminary pics?

Posted by jpeg68 in New Zealand, 07 Oct 2012 23:10

The high standard of sets continues. The close ups reveal fantastically detailed sets (Thanks to those who linked to them). It's incredibly boring, as usual, though, to wade through the negative comments that people whip up without seemingly a moment's thought (and often based on small, unclear pictures). Nothing has changed here in terms of what Lego do with sets, except that, if anything, the level of detail has increased. Interior sets like the barrel escape and the Goblin King battle are never going to have substantial walls (for those who think these look "unfinished") - those are for the individual to create. When Lego did do large walls they were big hunks of plastic that everyone complained about! It's also worth noting that the LOTR sets drew from all three films whereas these are from the first of three only. The Hobbit is a different story to LOTR anyway, slightly less of an epic scale until the end perhaps, so these sets are perfectly appropriate IMHO. Well done Lego designers!

Posted by kmvk83 in Netherlands, 08 Oct 2012 01:44

I think it is all a matter of a personal point of view. Now with the better pictures, we can see detail, and it is nice to see some bricks or technics which I have not seen before. But the overall impression stays the same. A bit dissapointing. Like others I was blown away with the LotR sets. These new ones do not have that effect.
That 'things have not changed in terms of what LEGO did with sets' is not a compliment. In my opinion. Just the opposite. The LotRsets do look finished. Do we have to settle for less than excellent?
But again maybe my feelings will change after seeing the movie.

Posted by ambrose in Australia, 08 Oct 2012 06:57

gobling king is fantastic :) and hilarious!

Posted by Sebastian in Germany, 08 Oct 2012 07:19

The sets look ok to me. Some more than others. From what I can see in the pictures they consist of many small parts such as tiles and slopes and come with many minifig accessories which is good. The bad thing about the designs is that they aren't sets I would put on the shelf as display pieces but they are rather just scenes from the movie(s) with many loose features (tables, spiders, rocks etc.). Especially the tavern, Bag End and big goblin cave look like fun builds. The latter almost turned out exactly the way I imagined it. By the way, that goblin king kind of reminds me of those stupid bad guys in Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears. The two forest sets are just alright but really don't appear special to me.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 08 Oct 2012 08:24

@Missingno, OK to use here?

Posted by Apuleius in Hungary, 08 Oct 2012 08:54

Does anyone know who the hell is that guy sitting on the back of the white warg in the set 'Attack of the Wargs'? I can not identify him.

Posted by larsnelson in United States, 08 Oct 2012 10:40

@ Apuleius

It looks like he is Paul Schaffer, from Late Night with David Letterman.

Or he is just a bald Goblin.

Either way he should join the hair club for men, which I have heard is willing to take in other species such as goblins and band leaders. Obviously, elves would have no use for such a club, but surely there is a bald dwarf or two. Verne Troyer comes to mind.

Posted by Joefish in United Kingdom, 08 Oct 2012 11:54

Huw - it's 'Mirkwood', not 'Milkwood'.
These sets are more interesting than The Lord of the Rings ones. I might actually get some. Bag End and the Riddle one anyway.

The film is going to be interesting, as the original was a simpler children's story - though as daunting a read for any child as LoTR is for an adult. So to make it as mature as the LoTR movie is going to mean a massive re-write. The script for the film is to be hugely embellished based on later references mostly ret-conned by Tolkein himself to have the dwarfs forced from their land by Smaug and all sorts of other skirmishes and intrigue that were never even hinted at in the original book.

Posted by Anak in Hungary, 08 Oct 2012 12:35

@Apuleius: The guy who is sitting on the back of the white warg is Yazneg. One of the many new characters created by Peter Jackson for the Hobbit movies.

It's fine with me! Thanks for using them! :)

Posted by duilim in Australia, 08 Oct 2012 20:43

Well, I guess that these sets can't be to everyone's taste. Some of us will be excited by what we have seen, and others will be left a little disappointed.
I have to admit that I fall into the latter category. Apart from the Bag End set, the others leave me underwhelmed although this may be a good thing for my Lego budget. With Arkham Asylum, Horizon Express, Palace Cinema and goodness knows what else coming out next year, I am somewhat relieved that many of these sets don't appeal to me.
To be honest, I've found the entire LOTR theme to have not met expectations. Apart from Helm's Deep, the inital wave was below par although I have to admit that given the size of the structures in Middle Earth, the designers didn't do too bad a job with Moria and Weathertop.

Posted by Apuleius in Hungary, 09 Oct 2012 03:40

@Anak:

Köszönöm szépen! Thank you soo much for your detailed explanation of this new character. The new goblin characters seem like nice additions to the story and I really hope to see the other ones to appear in future Hobbit sets. I know it is a matter of taste but Yazneg does not seem like a finished minifigure to me. I really don't like the minifigures left bald without any hair or headgear by Lego. They could have given some goblin style ears to poor Yazneg.
