Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sets to be unveiled today

LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Promo 1FBTB is reporting that today, at 3pm EST, the TMNT sets will be unveiled at New York Comic Con. That's  8 pm in London, isn't it?

This is a theme that frankly, I have no interest in whatsoever. I was too old to have watched the cartoons as a kid and my daughters weren't interested in them when they were young.

Still, with 2013 shaping up to be a fairly interesting year, at least there'll be some sets that I won't need to buy.

What are your thoughts on them? Will you buy them? What do you think the turtle minifigs will look like?

I'm curieus to see what the minifigs will look like, besides that I'm not much interested either.

I was completely addicted to the TMNT when I was a kid. I was 8, in '91 (which IIRC was the time of the cartoon), and I had so much Turtle stuff it wasn't funny.

There have been so many lines recently that have tied in to really awesome stories and characters (the Avengers or Justice League, at least part of the JLA, are things I never thought we'd see, but here we are). TMNT minifigs? Absolutely. ABSOLUTELY. I will be shoving children and little old ladies out of the way to get hold of these, I swear to goodness. I'm so excited, right now, it's not funny.

I hope we get Casey and April, as well. And Splinter, too. I wonder what kinds of sets (probably some sewer-themed sets, maybe a couple of vehicles?) we'll get. But no, I can't wait.

Another licensed theme, more expensive products. Frankly I'm surprised TLG has made this move given that TMNT seems to go through phases of popularity.

Posted by Almaras22 in Australia, 11 Oct 2012 05:23

I'm a fan of the turtles, so I'm curious to see how they will translate into minifigs (the heads are the make or break for me, I think - will they be standard or larger and turtlier?) and what sets come out. Presumably there will be a decked out pad, which, if that's the case and it has a reasonable price tag, I'd consider getting :)

Posted by Agreenbrick in Sweden, 11 Oct 2012 05:31

Are the sets confirmed to be regular ones with minifigs, or could they just be action figures along the lines of Ben 10, Bionicle, etc. ?

Posted by alijoezac in United Kingdom, 11 Oct 2012 05:33

I'll wait and see. I've never seen the Sponge Bob TV programme but I think the LEGO sets are fabulous!

Posted by odindusk in United States, 11 Oct 2012 05:37

I was a fan of the original comic that debuted in the mid-to-late 80s. It was violent. The turtles cussed. There was blood. It was a nice, dark change of pace from mainstream comics at the time (80s Marvel superhero stuff was almost obnoxiously cheesy).

I was a young teen when the cartoon finally came out, so I was never a huge fan of it. With all of that said, I'm very curious to see how LEGO TMNT will turn out. I agree with Almaras22's thoughts above about the heads.

Posted by JamesBenjamin in United States, 11 Oct 2012 05:38

@agreenbrick: Someone posted a while back that there were minifig keychains, which should mean we're getting minifig sets.

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 11 Oct 2012 05:40

From what I've read, the heads are moulded like the turtles heads, and the shells attach to the back via a neck bracket. Guess the weapons are mostly in existance, except for Mikey's nunchucks, but a short chain and two 3L bars/lightsabre hilts should fix that.

No, not another licensed theme!!!

*Cough* As for my thoughts: not interested.

Posted by icey in Sweden, 11 Oct 2012 05:50

TMNT stirs up so many childhood memories...
So IF the new cartoon follows the old in personalities and vechicles (which means that the LEGO producs also will follow the old cartoons)... THEN it will make me interested and a bit poorer! But if the series is completely reshaped in everything except the 4 turtle names.... then I'll stay indifferent but a bit richer! So... mixed feelings until 9 o'clock tonight (GMT+1)

Posted by Almaras22 in Australia, 11 Oct 2012 06:05

Moulded heads and attachable shells sounds brilliant - if this turns out to be true I will be seriously intrigued, as long as the sets themselves aren't horrible!

Posted by sullijtuff in Canada, 11 Oct 2012 06:18

I will be first in line to pick these up. Ninja Turtles lego, bring it on!!!

Posted by Bumblepants in Cameroon, 11 Oct 2012 06:43

I just want that pizza box/pizza set

Posted by murphquake in United States, 11 Oct 2012 06:48

I want the pizza box too! Gonna ask at NYCC today...

There's a black tarp covered banner over the HUGE Lego display at NYCC, which is literally dead center of the main floor..

BUT! Please everyone come down to Level 1B Spot 201 and see I LUG NY's Star Wars/DC & Marvel Superheroes/Lord of the Rings fan display that Lego invited us for and make sure you say hi!

Posted by teamladd in United Kingdom, 11 Oct 2012 06:54

I cant wait for these sets. I will be purchasing day 1.

Posted by jsutton in United Kingdom, 11 Oct 2012 07:14

I can wait for these sets. I will be purchasing only when they're at least 50% off.

Posted by ninjagoyo in United States, 11 Oct 2012 07:26

Ultrabuild turtles would be epic. Ultrabuild turtle VILLAINS even more so, perhaps. But maybe the Ben 10 fiasco makes that unlikely (I say this as one of the few huge fans of the Ben 10 figures, even though I've never seen the show... they just looked really cool to me and I loved the parts).

Posted by sadosed in United States, 11 Oct 2012 07:28

I believe the reason behind this is that TLG has a deal with Nickelodeon which are the same people that put out Spongebob. There is a whole reboot and big fanfaire that there just put out a new TMNT cartoon. I am not too excited myself for the set but people been complaining about more diverse sets, this might be something interesting for CITY folks.

Posted by Delatron in United Kingdom, 11 Oct 2012 07:30

I admit i'm intrigued. Like Odindusk I recall the comics as violent and cool, the roleplay game as a bit post-apoc (there were other mutated animal races than just turtles) and the 90s cartoon as a bit goofy and light-hearted. I've seen the trailers for the new Nickelodean cartoon and they seem a lot like the most recent CGI film version - more for older kids and teens, a little darker and more action oriented than comedy. I'm hopeful, and if i'm honest, i'll buy enough to get the turtles, Splinter and hopefully a nice Shredder minifig!

Posted by UtarEmpire in United States, 11 Oct 2012 07:39

I personally have no interest in the franchise itself, but it'll be interesting to see what the sets look like.

I did have a TMNT pizza thrower toy when I was a kid, though...gods above only knows why I had one of those. I suppose I must have liked the TV show at some point.

Posted by shaase in Canada, 11 Oct 2012 07:40

No interest what so ever; sure I watched TMNT as a teen but was never a big fan. Agree with Huw my wallet will be saved (somewhat) in 2013

Posted by MCLegoboy in United States, 11 Oct 2012 07:55

I wonder what are they going to do when Michael Bay's movie comes out? XD

I have no interest in this because the only licensed theme that has lasted is Star Wars, and I have no affiliation with the Turtles. Although licensed themes may sell more than the regular stuff, but there are too many licenses and I think LEGO needs to calm down and focus more on the stuff they put out straight from their ideas.

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 11 Oct 2012 08:03

I won't be getting them, however I do want that pizza!

Posted by DaveBey in United States, 11 Oct 2012 08:05

I'm only interested if there's a Vanilla Ice minifig from TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze.

Posted by lego613master in United States, 11 Oct 2012 08:38

To me, of course no offense to those who like it, but this is (at the moment) worse to me than the ultra-lame Spongebob.

Posted by Corellian Engineering in Belgium, 11 Oct 2012 09:04

.. Lego just posted some picture(s) on their facebook page.
Turtles seem to have a molded head and shell attached to the back.
Set seems a bit weird to me, but that is maybe because I never was a fan of the TMNT..

Posted by Corellian Engineering in Belgium, 11 Oct 2012 09:11

the vilains (?) seem interesting though... but I have to admit that I am even not sure if that dog/wolf creature is a baddy..

Most interesting to me is that TLG seems to introduce more olive green pieces.. or is that a tan colored roof on that yellow truck?

Posted by Legolover9531 in United States, 11 Oct 2012 09:14

The set LEGO showed on Facebook looks like crap. I wasn't interested from the start though.

First photo is in Lego Facebook page.
(Sorry from bad English, i'm a Polish.)

Love the look of the turtles themselves, but disappointed—though in no way surprised—that we'll probably never have any of the sets from the "classic" cartoon. I want the old turtle van!

Posted by typo in United States, 11 Oct 2012 09:43

Nice...

Posted by Tzi in Canada, 11 Oct 2012 09:43

Nope, not interrested at all!
But have to admit that the turtle minifigs are turning well.
Seems 2013, will not be as costly in lego so far...

Posted by ninjagoyo in United States, 11 Oct 2012 09:47

Turtles look ABYSMAL. Vehicles look whatever is worse than abysmal. Bad guys (except for the big doggie one) look excellent...
Overall, my disappointment level is high.

Is Krang's head sitting on some kind of new adapter piece between torso and head? Or what?I don't recall ever seeing that square-base head before.

Posted by AETerry in United States, 11 Oct 2012 09:49

TMNT will be on my list of must have sets in 2013!

There's other themes I've seen so far for the coming year, I was worried at first it would be a "slump year" where I only focused on and picked up one theme. Just would have meant it was easier on the pocket book.

But this, is exciting. I've watched the original classic cartoon, along with the 2003-2004 run and movies.

I don't love the figures all that well, but they're true to the latest incarnation and that's alright.

Posted by lippidp in United States, 11 Oct 2012 09:56

No interest, but as always I'm thrilled that TLG will make money so they can continue producing the themes I collect. Times are tough and it wasn't too long ago that they were operating at a loss.

Posted by Blade in Australia, 11 Oct 2012 09:58

OMG!! This is better than every childhood Christmas come at once.
I loved the turtles so much and Lego. To see them together :D
I will be pre ordering 3 of each.

Posted by krklint in United States, 11 Oct 2012 10:01

I will be buying the main characters for sure. I just hope we get man-hole covers for Turtles to jump out of :)

Posted by brixton in Canada, 11 Oct 2012 10:09

The ninja turtles, shredder and foot clan mini-figures look incredible but the sets themselves look awful. I was a huge turtle fan growing up and I loved the cartoon and the first two live action films. The newer cartoons and movies are bad. I might get a small set with minimal pieces just so I can get the ninja turtle minifigures.

Posted by ETAV8R in United States, 11 Oct 2012 10:19

No interest at all. I own some of the original comic books still. At that time as a young child the comics seemed interesting. As hype took over TMNT my interest waned.

Posted by MorkMan in United States, 11 Oct 2012 13:17

All I want is the slice of pizza! OMG!

Posted by tontonsega in France, 11 Oct 2012 14:05

2013 will be a year i'll save a lot of money.
City suck a lot with police and fire fighters sets again and again...and again!
hope that exclusives unveiled sets will be more creative.

Posted by The_Creator in United States, 11 Oct 2012 14:17

I'm VERY unhappy at TLG, we already have way too many licensed themes and TMNT is something that, frankly I never expected or thought TLG would do(Not in a good way)...

Posted by vexorian in Bolivia, 11 Oct 2012 18:17

I love this.

It is a perfect license to mark a before and after. After this theme, it is going to become evident that LEGO have run out of license ideas and that they are doing this too much. Thank you LEGO!

Posted by halcyon305 in United States, 11 Oct 2012 18:34

@vexorian...Agreed...license themes are getting too crazy (Lone Ranger? Seriously?) Lego needs to work on their own lines, the good ones (Monster Fighters!) are really great, and they are charming in a way that the licensed themes just aren't...and TMNT is not charming...

Posted by sitkawitka in United States, 12 Oct 2012 12:51

They can't just make they're own stuff some people want to see stuff in Lego form from movies and shows. AND NOT IN CUSTOM FORM!!!!!! Cause lets face it customs aren't as good as the real deal. Plus its probably easier to base something off of something then to make it up.
