The Hobbit sets: price and availability

  • The Hobbit sets: price and availability

Posted by Huw, 11 Nov 2012 09:46. Filed under New sets.

If you've received a US Shop-at-Home holiday catalog, you'll have seen that the Hobbit sets are listed in it, and will be available from November 27th. The prices are as follows:

    79000: 105 pieces, $9.99
    79001: 298 pieces, $29.99
    79002: 400 pieces, $49.99
    79003: 652 pieces, $69.99
    79004: 334 pieces, $39.99
    79010: 841 pieces, $99.99

However news just in, suggests that some Fred Meyer stores in the USA have already started selling the sets.

Meanwhile in the UK, Toys R Us has listed four of the sets, which it says will be available on Dec. 01:

    79000: £12.99, 79002: £49.99, 79003, £59.99, 79004: £39.99

Let's hope the 10% TRU markup is included in those prices.

The picture above is of the Goblin King Battle which I reviewed yesterday which, based on the above prices and the £:$ ratio of these sets, will probably cost £89.99 in TRU.

It's kind of a bummer that the price barrier for this theme is pretty steep. In Canada it'll jump from $16 to $40. Yikes! Bag End will probably be $90 up here. Will probably just be picking that one up...

Huw, can you edit the Hobbit set pages so that people who have been able to get some of the sets can do reviews? I think people here would be interested in reading those.

Posted by bluemodern in United States, 11 Nov 2012 10:58

Hmm, while logged in from my phone it says UK. I am in the US.

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 11 Nov 2012 10:59

I cannot wait for these sets and to me they look quite fairly priced except for 79002. I hope they arrive a little before December 1st and if they are not sold in Argos early on as well I will be disappointed.

^^^ done.

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 11 Nov 2012 11:23

That's a very decent UK price for the Bag End set, especially if you hold off until Amazon discounts it a bit further.

Huw, Thank you! I will submit reviews for the two sets I bought. Hopefully people will find them informative.

^ Thanks very much, I am interested to hear more about these sets and the Minifigures. Those dwarves all look brilliant to me but I would like to hear some detailed information about them.

Who decided to ask $50 US for 79002? Sure the adult collector's will practically be forced to buy it for the minifigures and beasts, but that's such a small portion of Lego's market I'm just not sure who else would be attracted to this set at that price. Lego could argue that the piece count, parts (blah blah blah) make it a $50 set, but I could also argue under any circumstance that a large tree and two rocks built out of Lego should never even be close to $50. Lego should've scaled-down the set, but as you can see, they made no effort to do so.

I already knew 79003 wasn't priced nicely, and that in Canada I would struggle to find it for a good deal. My Lord of the Rings shopping hasn't gone well this year since I've managed to buy absolutely nothing. That's not my fault either, since I'm not willing to pay neither Canadian nor American retail on those sets. It seems like you're asking TRU to bite the bullet when wanting something to go on sale above 20% off. Canada should have wiggle room on its prices, more so than American retailers.

$300 for a complete collection then... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I want them, but I'm trying to wean myself from complete collectorism. Also I wanna save cash to sample Chima.

^^^CapnRex101. I just submitted a review for the Escape from Mirkwood Spiders set. The minifigs are great (in my opinion). I am not sure how long it takes for them to show up on the page. Hopefully, lots of different people will post reviews soon. I am snowed in where I am today so this is a fun thing to do.

You scared me there for a second... I went through from the top to see which was which, and when I'd gotten to Bag End, I still hadn't seen the Barrel Escape set. You might want to put the list in price order, seeing as that's the only one switched up...

Not happy with the bag end price; was expecting it to be £50. I know in terms of price per piece, £60 seems fair, but it does look very small and when images were first released on flickr, a $60 price was given which judging by the £-$ on the attack on weathertop set would have made the UK price £50. was saving so i'd have £40 by december 1st (plus a £10 lego voucher i already have) but will now have to get the set later and have to spend £10 extra :( i'm guessing that maybe the same thing happened as with the haunted house; lego got greedy after reading the positive comments.

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 11 Nov 2012 13:49

I don't get it. Most of the UK prices are equal to the US ones, but Riddles for the Ring is more expensive, and Bag End is cheaper?

I wonder how much Mirkwood Spiders will cost. I hope it's cheaper than the American price - I was considering getting that one, but at almost £30 I don't think I can afford it.

Posted by BlackRabbit in Canada, 11 Nov 2012 14:01

Well thats another line up of sets that i won't buy. I only buy lego when its on sale now.

Posted by TheCahleySlash in United Kingdom, 11 Nov 2012 15:33

For these sets I will probably wait for a discount of around 20% off all of these sets before I get them. It's a shame that they come out in December 2012 and not earlier but oh well!

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 11 Nov 2012 16:50

^^^December is in less than three weeks, and you want them sooner, but you are waiting for a sale?

None of that makes sense. lol

Posted by QuabbinHiker in United States, 11 Nov 2012 18:20

Hmm.. I think I will wait for a collection bundle from S@H.

Posted by mshiels in Canada, 11 Nov 2012 22:54

Can someone scan me the page for that shop@Home catalog for the hobbit stuff. Thanks.

Posted by Cerlin in Austria, 12 Nov 2012 05:42

The € prices are strange too. Some of the sets are the same in € as in $ (Mirkwood and Goblin King), some are ridiculously overpriced at amazon: €59,99 for the warg attack and €79,99 for Bag End?? Amazon is probably going to discount them not too long after their release, but still...

Posted by Zander in United Kingdom, 12 Nov 2012 08:48

I have found out from a source within TLG UK that The Hobbit sets will be available from LEGO UK stores from 1 Dec and that the Goblin King Battle set will be £80 - £90.

I'm guessing from the fact that TRU UK is releasing some sets that day that 1 Dec is the official UK release date and they will be available from UK S@H that day too. I'm also speculating that the Goblin King set will be closer to £90 than £80.

Posted by cinemajay in United States, 12 Nov 2012 09:27

The only set I had eyes on was Unexpected Gathering (Bilbo's house) and unfortunately $70 USD puts it out of range. That's a LOT of cash for that set.

Sorry Bilbo.

I can confirm 79000,79001,79002,79003 are available on the shelves of Fred Meyer Stores in the Portland, OR area.

Posted by minimacwomble in United Kingdom, 13 Nov 2012 06:34

Amazon Uk are now listing 79000, Riddle of the Ring £11.99 , 79001, Mirkwood for £24.99, 79002, Attack of the Wargs for £49.99, 79003 An Unexpected Gathering for £59.99,and 79010, Goblin King Battle for £79.99. Delivery is currently quoted at 4-7 weeks

Posted by LostInTranslation in United Kingdom, 13 Nov 2012 09:57

^ Just saw that myself. The absence of 79004 on Amazon makes me think it might be a TRU exclusive.

Posted by schopp in United States, 13 Nov 2012 19:54

Kmart .com has all five non-exclusive sets available.

The link to the Hobbit sets was under New on the main Lego page one day, can't find that link anymore. It might have been an released early by mistake. This link will take you to the sets and you can navigate from there.

If you have not already caught on to it, Fred Meyer(not sure about other retailers) are selling the Goblin King Battle for only $89.99 and none appear to have the Barrel Escape yet (have checked all 7 in my area) but do have the rest of the collection.
