2013 minifigs leak onto eBay

Galaxy Squad minifigIf you've been reading other LEGO blogs you may have noticed that there's been something of a 'leak' of minifigs from 2013 sets onto eBay lately.

The latest to catch my eye are a couple of Galaxy Squad ones, which you can see better pictures of at Hoth Bricks.

The insect-y chap on the right looks just like those in the cartoon picture from the club magazine.

I'm not going to cast assertions as to how the seller obtained them: I will let you make your own mind up. As far as we know these sets are not even due for release in January, unless they are not destined for regular retailers which would explain why none are listing them yet (and why they are not in the Jan-May 2013 retailers' catalogue).

Nevertheless they look very cool and I look forward to being able to buy them legitimately.

I am amazed LEGO has not contacted ebay to stop the sales of these 2013 minifigures. There have been rumours that these are test runs, so not the same quality as the ones that will be released. What I am concerned about is when I go to buy what I think are originals in 2013 for my collection I may end up with one of these substandard ones.

I did raise my concerns in my blog post http://www.minifigures.co.uk/news/lego-2013-minifigures-selling-on-ebay/

I guess it depends on whether they were obtained legitimately or not. If the guy fished them out of a rubbish bin or something there's probably not much LEGO can do.

Or is that left? :)
Awaiting proper images for the Space Troopers... Will they be like that Trooper in CMF7 ??
This must be 'Captain Mosquito'.

^^^ Here's a suggestion... Don't buy them. Wait a few months, save yourself a whole lot of money and "buy them legitimately".

Does anyone think Lego is moving more towards MegaB#%@ks? The one off pieces and strange molding shapes makes me think so.

I think LEGO is trying to stay competitive, although, they really dont have to, Ha Ha. As for the "pre-release" of these figures, no one I think except maybe a handful of individuals around the world, probably all in Billund, Denmark, really knows how early photos, pieces, sets, catalogues, figures, etc hit the internet. Although, with the internet being a beast in and of itself thats a whole other story. Ultimately, however these surfaced good for them for being a capitalist and selling for 50 bucks!! Ha Ha, now THATS A JOKE. But hey, if someone out there wants to buy it to have it before everyone else, fine. As for me, I think I'd just wait and use that same 50 bucks to buy all the mini figures on bricklink once they come out even if I do not want the sets. Anyway, I digress, who knows how they came out, they look great, and good for them for selling and good for the secret LEGO police tracking them down if they can. :)

I have to say, after the excitement of the hobbit sets and the fab minifigs, that thing is pretty awful. It looks like half the things my daughter picks up in the generic toy aisle.

Well I like the figs - Like the Chima stuff too, i'm a big fan of non-human figures so these will be fun. Still hoping for antennae like the twitch fig.

Those sets ARE in 1H catalogue, just not in all countries. Release date is march 2013.

Posted by Psymon in United Kingdom, 15 Nov 2012 09:49

I don't understand why anyone would pay over the top prices for something that's going to be released in a couple of months anyway.

Posted by aaclapham in United Kingdom, 15 Nov 2012 10:19

^ The majority of people who I have seen buy them are people who want to review them on Youtube. Race to be the first...

Very cool! I'm looking forward to this series!

Eh. I'm not impressed. My son absolutely loves aliens/monsters, but if they really are all insects, he will probably have zero interest. For us, disappointing to see Alien Conquest replaced with this.

It's very strange to see these minifigures pop up early. A booth at the Austin Comic Con last month had a lot of unreleased minifigures for sale (Chima, Hobbit dwarves, Ninja Turtles, etc). When I asked where the seller got them he seemed a bit uncomfortable but said something about 'LEGO distributors.' Right...

Olive green is one of the ugliest colors I have ever seen LEGO make. It's puke green.

The Alien Conquest aliens were cool, this just looks bad to me, but it could just be the coor.

I am looking forward to those wings, as I can use them for the fairies in my cast of Iolanthe

Can someone give me a eBay link?

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 15 Nov 2012 17:12

This figure and the others look great to me, but I agree with other comments that Alien Conquest should have been continued and judging from the limited sources we have, those sets looked much more appealing. However I think we should wait to see what the Space Troopers look like and their vehicles before we draw an absolute judgement.

As for how these Minifigures escape the factory, I am left stumped. They could indeed be prototype figures which have been pretty much thrown out, but rescued by this eagle-eyed eBay seller, or perhaps a source from within the company has managed to smuggle them out into the marketplace. However while I doubt it, it is possible that Lego release just a few of these Minifigures to gauge the reaction to them and build anticipation.

I must say I am sorely tempted by those 501st Troopers, perhaps even more so if they are mere prototypes, and the price is not outrageously extortionate it seems to me. What makes me suspect that perhaps the source is in fact somewhat legitimate is the fact that these sorts of figures consistently seem to be released a month or two early on eBay like this, which seems unlikely if this seller has managed to obtain them on the off chance. Also, is it really worth the risk of stealing from a large company like Lego to make a few hundred dollars?

@Huw: I think the phrase you're looking for is 'cast aspersions', not assertions.

I don't know about you, but the picture is on the LEFT for me. Get your directions right, Huw! ;-)

Anyway, these look pretty good. Maybe they were in the catalog, but didn't get leaked.

Monsters in leather underpants are more scary.
