Announcing a major new feature: Rebrickable integration

  • Announcing a major new feature: Rebrickable integration

Posted by Huw, 17 Nov 2012 08:37. Filed under Brickset.

Rebrickable is a relatively new site that tells you which sets you can build from the parts you already own, and also how many parts you need to build a particular set.

This functionality complements Brickset's collection management features perfectly so I am pleased to announce that this feature has been incorporated into Brickset.

    Here's how it works:

    • First, you need to create an account at Rebrickable.
    • When you've done so, or if you have one already, login here at Brickset then go to your profile page and select Edit Profile. Enter your Rebrickable username (the email address you registered with) and password in the new section of the form, and press the Check login details link to ensure you've entered them correctly.
    • Then, go to your My Sets page, and find the Rebrickable box at the bottom. Click on the Send your sets to Rebrickable link. Your collection will then be transferred to Rebrickable, which will save it in its database. It should only take a few seconds: even my 2000+ sets only took about 1/2 a minute or so to transfer.
    • That's it: it's set up.

Now, when you go to a set detail page you'll see a new box in the menu that will tell you the percentage of parts in the set that you have in the sets you already own. There's also a link to Rebrickable that'll provide information about the parts you don't have and also options such as colour substitutions and so on.

At the moment, your collection will not be automatically synchronised with Rebrickable as you make changes, so you'll need to send it across manually from time to time. It is likely that I'll add the option to do so in future, if this feature proves popular.

This functionality should save you having to struggle with other antiquated sites that provide something similar.

As always, let me know if you think this is a useful feature or if you're having problems with it.

Absolutely brilliant feature! I can see this getting a lot of use from me.

@Huw - Not an entirely on topic question, but referring to your mention of '2000 sets' you own, how long ago did you begin collecting and building with Lego?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 09:10

I came out of my 'dark ages' in 1994. The first set I bought was 8868 Air Tech Claw Rig.

Thanks for doing this Huw!

A very neat feature that I'm sure a lot of people will find very useful. Unfortunately not me though, since I can't bring myself to part out my sets. Perhaps if I keep a second account where I list my spare sets then it would be more useful to me. Still, Rebrickable is a great site and I'm pleased to see this integration with Brickset.

I'm experiencing a few issues with it in Chrome though, sometimes when I go to to a set page, I end with a white blank page, for example, this seems to happen every time on http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=10227-1

Wow i own 80% of the pieces needed to make 10179, can i ask if there is a way from transferring 2 brickset profiles to Rebrickable, as when i tried it it wiped out the first one. Also a couple of sets like Rockband didn't have the right pictures.

Posted by shaase in Canada, 17 Nov 2012 09:27

I've been doing this for about a year since becoming frustrated with Peeron becoming more and more antiquated. My only problem with Rebrickable is it doesn't keep track of all parts specifically parts related to mini figures; though I can understand their reasoning since the focus of the site is in the reusability of parts to make MOCs.

I noticed on the parts tab (of set details) you had implemented the number of sets a piece is found in a pop up showing the sets. Hopefully you can improve upon this if you are able to work with Rebrickable and hopefully a partnership with that site can be more hand in hand than the one you seem to get from Bricklink.

Oddly I came out of my so called dark ages around the same time as you (fall 1993 during college) when I encountered the Deep Freeze Defender (6973), which reminded me of the classic space Galaxy Commander (6980) which was the last set I received as a kid...from then on I've been hooked again.

Thanks Huw and to those as well, who help you out on this site.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 09:40

@atkinsar, that was caused by a division by zero error, because that set has not been inventoried at Rebrickable yet. I've now caught that condition and show a sensible message.

^ Good point about the parts tab. Rebrickable gets its inventories from BrickLink but not its images. I'm not planning on doing either, but using LEGO's official parts lists.

I seem to be having a problem transferring my collection, allow me to explain.

I was able to create an account at Rebrickable with no problem, it accepted my username and password straight away and activated my account successfully. Now however, when I go to my profile page to try and enter my details, a problem has arisen. I type in my username and password absolutely correctly with capitals in the right places etc. (I have made very sure of this) but when I click on 'check login details' it tells me my username or password is incorrect. I have checked that I did indeed type in my username and password on Rebrickable correctly as well and that all seems fine to the extent that I have even reset my password to make absolutely sure, so why it says my 'username or password is incorrect' I have no idea.

Can anybody help? Thanks.

@CapnRex101
That happened to me, too. Perhaps it's because I'm using my iPad?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 09:51

Rebrickable requires login by email address not 'profile name', and that thus needs to be entered at Brickset. Maybe I should rename the 'username' box something else if it's not obvious?

Just checked the database: 33 people have logged in and transferred their collection sucessfully.

These people haven't (rebrickable usernames) because their email address is needed, not their 'name':

@CapnRex101

Having the same problem! This time it's on an iMac. Looking forward to using the feature.

@Huw

I did that, but it's still not working.

Hi all, I am the creator of Rebrickable. If anyone needs assistance from me or just has questions please email me at support@rebrickable.com with the details but please note that its now 1am here so you might not get a response for a few hrs :)

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 17 Nov 2012 09:54

Never mind, it's working now.

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 10:00

@Huw - Many thanks, it is all up and running now, I didn't think of that! :)

Wow, 96.6% of 10179 Millennium Falcon parts! It is amazing what you discover from these sorts of sites!

Posted by pinkertonchew in Singapore, 17 Nov 2012 10:03

user name is your email address. :D
tried login using my user id but failed but onced keyed in your email address, verification no problemo :D

Great site btw! Thank you!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 10:04

I've added a note to the form to make it more obvious.

Posted by Markey in Belgium, 17 Nov 2012 10:11

Is it me, or did this break a feature of the website?

When you look up info of a set, there used to be a box where you could enter how many of that set you owned, but now, there's the Rebrickable logo in its place.

Posted by murrayhenson in Poland, 17 Nov 2012 10:15

This is a great service but, unfortunately, it really just means I need to buy a lot more sets (I have 1.5% of Huw's)... :)

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 10:47

^^ It's below it

Posted by ramon123 in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 10:49

That is awesome i will not close that page for a long time. Wolfpack tower 98% not bad, thank you Huw

Posted by bricksan in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 10:50

Nice addition Huw , love it already, enough said :-)

Posted by Targellian in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 10:57

Love the suggestions list for sets to buy, to help you get closer to the parts needed for other sets... although it does now mean I have to catalogue all the bits and bobs I've bought off Bricklink, Ebay and Pick-a-brick over the years >.<

Posted by Rolyat24 in United States, 17 Nov 2012 11:12

Although I really do not like to part out my sets, I still think this feature is very useful and a great addition. Good Job!

Posted by StrykerCat in United States, 17 Nov 2012 11:15

Awesome! Thanks. The only improvement I can think of is if you could incorporate a "custom set" that would allow me to enter my loose parts that I get off bricklink. I would think it would be time consuming to implement though. It would be like using a bricklink inventory in addition to sets to see what sets could be built. Just a thought... I do appreciate the work you put into this site.

Posted by Arubariba in United States, 17 Nov 2012 11:45

Waw, that's the only thing I can add!! wawwwwwwwwwwwww great webpage!!

Posted by branolego in Canada, 17 Nov 2012 12:07

This is Bricktastic!!!
im always building other sets for my little cousins and im not always sure if i have the pieces to build something. now i will know what i have and dont have for sets i want to build for them or myself.
thanks for adding this great feature.
great website by the way.

Thanks, Huw, for continuing to work toward integration of the various Lego fan sites. Since no single site does everything I'd like with my Lego collection, it's nice to see this effort to bring the strengths of the various sites together to work for the greater good of the community. Kudos!

Posted by cybiko in Canada, 17 Nov 2012 12:51

I'm noticing a problem since the addition of this box. If I go to an item I already own I no longer see the "My Collection" box in the list. This means you can't add/modify/add notes. It's still there on any set not currently in my collection but once I fill anything into the own fields I no longer get that box on an item. I'm pretty sure I was still seeing it a couple of days ago and am wondering if it's just an error as a result adding the Rebrickable box in that sidebar.

Posted by Markey in Belgium, 17 Nov 2012 12:53

^ That's the problem I had as well.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 12:54

^ That's been fixed now, sorry for the inconvenience.

Posted by Markey in Belgium, 17 Nov 2012 12:56

Thanks Huw, much appreciated.

Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome. Really like Rebrickable but always forget to visit, so this is great.

Amazing feature ! Thanks !

Posted by Zacherano in United States, 17 Nov 2012 14:04

This looks like an absolutely fantastic feature! Thanks for keeping up with all the newest online innovations, Huw!

Posted by Cam'n'Stu in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 14:17

Fantastic functionality. Two great sites combined makes it greater than the sum of the parts! (Pun intended;) Loving the work guys!

Posted by brix in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 16:42

Is the percentage that it gives based solely on the types of parts that you own or the numbers of each one also? e.g. when it says 78%, does it mean I own 78% of the different elements in the set or 78% of all the set's pieces in total? thanks :)

Posted by Si_Dorking_Surrey in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 17:02

Nice addition Huw, this is definitely a step in the right direction.

One thing this highlights is the need to distinguish between sets which are sealed and those which are opened - I've only put opened sets into rebrickable, whereas I have both sealed and open sets in Brickset. If I linked them together without being able to make this distinction it would mess up my rebrickable lists.

I can't imagine that @atkinsar would break open one of his rare polys just to pinch a brick out of it, so I would imagine that this might help polybag collectors too.

Posted by murphquake in United States, 17 Nov 2012 17:12

I second Cam'n'Stu! Thanks Huw & Nthom, I think this will be a feature that we'll wonder how we lived without in a few months =-)

Posted by perfectlydark in Australia, 17 Nov 2012 17:42

Excellent feature, Ive been using rebrickable but kinda lost it when I was adding sets in several different places..this solves that problem. Thanks heaps!

Posted by pantzman in United Kingdom, 17 Nov 2012 17:54

I haven't checked this out as yet but I was wondering if there is a way to add my stock list from my bricklink shop to see what sets I could make from that?

Posted by nthom in Australia, 17 Nov 2012 18:25

@StrykerCat - on Rebrickable you can add any loose parts you have which it will combine with the parts from any sets you have in your collection, so you should be able to do what you want without any changes.

@brix - it also uses the quantity of each part within the sets.

@pantzman - you can import your Bricklink XML file into your My Parts page on Rebrickable to do exactly that. You don't have to list sets to use, it works fine on just loose parts like this too.

Posted by AlphaYoder in United States, 17 Nov 2012 20:04

Great job. I have used the site here and there to help build together some sets and figure out what pieces I been missing, but I like now how I can add some extra pieces and sets and try to build up some new sets a lot easier. Well done...

Posted by bachaddict in New Zealand, 17 Nov 2012 22:55

I have all my sets on Rebrickable and Peeron but only 9 here, how do I import them?

Posted by brix in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2012 03:48

@ nthom - thanks :)

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2012 03:53

^^ You can import from Lugnet, but not currently Peeron or Rebrickable. It should be easy enough to add Rebrickable import but I probably won't bother with Peeron, as that's pretty much dead now anyway.

Posted by angied79 in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2012 07:04

Thanks Huw, this is a great idea. I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong though as on Brickset it says 'You own 214 sets (188 different)' but It will only send details of 158 sets to Rebrickable. Could it be because some of my sets are not listed on Rebrickable's inventory yet? It looks like many of the minifigs are not listed, sorry if this is an obvious question! :)

Posted by M-Tron Hero Kodiak in United States, 18 Nov 2012 23:37

This is a great addition to brickset!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 19 Nov 2012 02:57

^^ Yes, that will be the reason. Minifigs and 'gear' I suspect.

Posted by zipsforbananas in United Kingdom, 19 Nov 2012 05:16

Fantastic, it worked smoothly for me. I'm a bit disappointed though, I've only got 60% of 10179! :P

Works very well. Thank you very much!
