Collectable minifig series in 2010?

  • Collectable minifig series in 2010?

Miscellaneous news Posted by Huw, Nov 28 2009 5:35PM

    LLW Collector Badges

The Swedish LEGO blog legobloggen has an interesting bit of news about a collectable series of minifigs to be available next year:

"In June 2010, Lego will launch a new collectors series with only minifigs. The figures will be of various types, but is reportedly not being those from current themes. They could be anything from cowboys to ninjas or adventurers, etc. The first wave will appear in stores in June, reportedly contain 16 different characters. These will then be replaced by 16 other figures in August.

"Figures will be sold in opaque polybags, so it is chance that determines which figure you get. This is the same approach as in the example trading cards. The bag with the figure will cost 25 SEK. May seem much given to impulse setter costs only £ 5 more and then there is also the accessories. But I suspect that the high price is because the characters will be unique to this collector series and that they will only be produced in two months (at least the first wave)."  (thanks et314 for the news and translation)

This is very interesting, but I don't like the idea of them being in opaque bags!

Update: Grahamh_100 found this page on the LEGOLand Windsor site (try this link to the image on flickr if it doesn't work for you) which shows designs for 16 collectable badges which feature images of minifigs. They could be the first 16 collectable figures, and certainly some of the designs are the same as those seen in the Brickjournal article about new LEGO business cards. If so they will be very cool: my favourites are the cheerleader, clown and zombie!

Update 2: We're seeing information from a number of sources that suggest each bag will contain a selection of parts from across the range of the 16 figures, and not a specific figure as had previously been supposed. So a single bag you buy might contain the Clown's hair, the Zombie's head, the Robot's body, and the Cheerleader's legs.

Update 3: While the controversy over these figs continues, Brick Journal has unearthed some further Lego business card designs, this time showing the Cheer Leader & Magician figs in full, as well as other new business card designs showing existing minifigs.

When these are released, I can foresee we'll need something here on Brickset to enable us all to swap them and complete our collections.

Want. Can't wait! These sound like opportunity!

Ok. I guess it's a random version of the Vintage Minifig Collections! WANT WANT WANT!!! If there are old minifigs, of course!

Posted by andy0002 in United States, Nov 28 2009 6:17PM:

how much is that in us dollars? =_= i swear, sometimes brickset is just so worthless when it comes to info...

Posted by Alemas in United Kingdom, Nov 28 2009 6:19PM:

@andy0002: Hey! Huw could take that as an insult to Brickset!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, Nov 28 2009 6:36PM:

Sorry, I was going to post the US$ cost but xe.com wasn't loading for me earlier. 25SEK is about $3.50 or £2.20

Posted by omgbrick, Nov 28 2009 7:12PM:

Seems a bit much for just a figure. And hey if they're packaged in bags you can always feel them for the figure you want. If advertised properly these could sell like hot cakes.

Posted by 18000pieces in United States, Nov 28 2009 7:14PM:

I've seen pictures of some of the figures on Eurobricks - so far we have a caveman, a wrestler, a spaceman, and a crook from about the 1920's American West.

As for the opaque polybags, don't worry! Each one has unique accessories, so with a little feeling up you should be able to determine which is which.

EDIT: I should mention that the spaceman is unique from any previous space themes. He mainly resembles the fig in the Bradford Rant video, actually.

I don't get this
Are there just going to be bags not boxes?

talk about stealing the crap

Posted by Emerald Night in United States, Nov 28 2009 7:35PM:

If these figures are limited edition and look impressive I am going to try to pick up many. I also don't like the fact that they might come in opaque bags. I would really like to see pictures.

Posted by southpaw in N/A, Nov 28 2009 7:55PM:

Awesome! I love the idea of getting random minifigures! I can't wait!

Posted by mirandir in Sweden, Nov 28 2009 8:05PM:

When it comes to prices on LEGO you cant really use XE.com it's much easier and more accurate to just divide the SEK price by ten. So most likely the price in US will be around 2,5 USD. The true exchangerate according to XE.com is 1 USD = 7 SEK.

The idea behind this theme is pretty much like the collectible cards that kids like. So the opaque polybags is what LEGO hopes will drive sales of course.

I'm not 100% sure wheter or not they'll come with any accesories or not. The info I got from my source specifies "Minifigs that will not occur in any set". But I really hope they have some kind of accesory as it would be really boring to get a caveman but no club. But who knows...

Oh, and I don't know if anybody cares but I did leaveout the info that each polybag will also contain a small poster showing all 16 figs in the series. Which will probably make it harder to feel what fig it is.

Posted by softybones in United States, Nov 28 2009 8:20PM:

can someone give me a link to the pictures? I can't seem to find them.

Posted by Sharpy in Australia, Nov 28 2009 8:34PM:

What a great marketing plan from Lego to ensure the Lego collector buys more than 1 of each product, as the true collecter will definately not stop at just one bag. I really hope they don't go down the path of the common, uncommon and rare minifig in this collection, as the temptation to overspend just to get that rare figure can be pretty strong...

Now Lego, can you please re-introduce tree multi-packs? My town needs some trees!

Posted by mirandir in Sweden, Nov 28 2009 8:34PM:

The pictures are actually on BrickJournal's site and actually depicts LEGO's new buisness cards. The figs on the cards are renderings but are *suspected* to be theese new collectible minifigs.

And finaly url is here:

I guess its pretty awesome`. when i saw Journal's pics i was expecting Cavemen, wrestling, and new western lines.

the random packings do seem very interesting. will theu be sold in vending machines? 8)

these looks freaking amazing!!!! i was hoping for ninjas though... either Huw, TLG, or the brick journal let me down, idk which.... i wonder if these have anything to fo with lego universe? they seem similar to their artwork, and LU seems to be coming up with interesting designs for custom figures of late, like ninas... OMG i want these!!!! if i can feel the bag and these are good quality figs (talkin bout the plastic) i will definately be collecting these!!! $2.50x16= $40.... idk that ill get all 16, im hoping to buy a tv for my room next year... BUT IF A NINJA ARMY IS INVOLVED, SCREW U TELEVISION! >:D

Posted by legowomen1980p in United States, Nov 28 2009 10:09PM:

$2.50 USD a piece.. for that price I'm buying at least 50 of them..

I'll be all over these if they make it to the States. I love that Caveman.

Posted by captainsamus in United States, Nov 29 2009 12:49AM:

It seems like Lego is entering the world of "Blind Box" figures, often seen for collectible vinyl figures (such as KidRobot figs) and anime figures both here and in Japan. This was an idea I've had for a while, and it's good to see Lego make it a reality.

Also, this post by an apparent insider on EuroBricks actually discussed the existence of this months ago, though with very vague details.

does anyone know where i can find pictures of these magical minifigures?

Posted by thomsedavi in New Zealand, Nov 29 2009 1:31AM:

I think I'll pass, to be honest... the new minifigs look cool (if those are the minifigs, and not just some random unrelated pictures) and I'd definitely buy them if you could buy all 16 at once, but I'm not spending hundreds of dollars just to try and get a complete collection. If I ever double up on Lego, it has to be intentional.

Also, I wonder about the quality... are they good Lego quality, or lower quality prebuilt minifigs? I'm thinking they might be the latter.

Actually, if the range has a 'unique' pirate, and it is high quality Lego, then I'll probably go to any lengths to secure it.

I hope there will be Adventures Minifigures and if so I can’t wait to get my hands on a sparkling new Harry Cane or Alexis Sanister!!! I love collecting cool Minifigures that’s why I have at least two of every Vintage Minifigure collection.

I would really like to know if they will be sold in places like Toysrus and Toymaster and not just LEGO Stores.

Posted by bmwlego in United States, Nov 29 2009 7:53AM:

If the link posted by grahamh ^^^ is what these figures will look like then I am sold on this idea! Talk about cool figs, a clown, cheerleader, indian, zombie, crash test dummy, wrestler, astronaut, caveman etc. These figs are going to kick but! I collected baseball cards as a kid and I can relate to this idea of collecting figs. True, I wouldn't want to pay for doubles but maybe LEGO will insert a whole collection in a sealed box of bagged figs like card companies do. Guarantee a whole set if you buy a whole box sort of deal.

This will bring LEGO collecting to a whole new height!

Posted by BioFreak877 in United States, Nov 29 2009 8:18AM:

I looked at a few of those badges and I immediatly thought I'm want them. ANd I do. Huw, the trading page on brickset sounds like a magnificent idea, and i'm prety sure buisness will boom on there.

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, Nov 29 2009 8:30AM:

These do look awesome. I understand why they're in polybags- to make them more like collectable cards where you don't know what you're getting- but you can FEEL minifgs in polybags, remember. I just don't hope they're glued or something...
If those figures posted are real, then it will be brilliant. Caveman, Clown, Crash dummy, Native American, Ringleader (with a TOP HAT!), Ninja (But no pirate! :D), Robin Hood-like figure (who is quite frankly AMAZING), Robot, Spaceman (those legs might go well on Stormtroopers), and Zombie all look great. And BTW, they appear to be in Alphabetical Order, starting with C- Caveman, going down to Z- Zombie.
However, with all the new moulded parts- Caveman beard, Clown Hair, Robot head and Space Gun, I wouldn't rule out these being non-poseable figures, like the McDonalds Batman ones :C

Yay... Crash Test Dummies!!

I'm going to want about a dozen of those, just to add that touch of realism to MOCs In Progress :oD

Posted by newlegoset333 in United States, Nov 29 2009 11:55AM:

I knew this for a while. I want almost all of the minifigures. Some, like the ninja, have no new molds on them at all andI can already build, but I haven't got a Native American, because I was never into that, and I could really use one in the future.

The clown looks great, I really want the Space Man, the robot is a little ridiculous though. The cheerleader and doctor, and the caveman I want as well.

My favourite is the robot, his helmet looks cool, but some figures look as though they have more pieces than others, like theres nothing "extra" on the crash test dummy and the zombie, but theres probaly lots of print on them.

Posted by Brickmeister1138, Nov 29 2009 2:49PM:

I want them all. The Robin Hood will go perfectly withthe castle sets. Also, doubles of these figs could certainly be used to make other things. There are a lot of great parts in these figs.

Posted by Starwarsgeek500 in United States, Nov 29 2009 5:05PM:

Well.... I could always use the figures, especially the dummy (For a Lego Honda factory) and the ninja (HIYA!). Several Robin Hoods could be an outlaw band, and the zombie is perfect for (what else?) a zombie plague. Most of the figures seem perfect for a city, where several things are happening at once.

I agree with legoguysw about the alphabetical order, but haven't figured out number 13, Does anyone have a clue what it is?
I have
01. Caveman
02. Cheerleader
03. Clown
04. Cowboy
05. Crash Test Dummy
06. Diver
07. Indian (Native American)
08. Magician
09. Ninja
10. Nurse
11. Robin Hood
12. Robot
13. Rock star??
14. Spaceman
15. Wrestler
16. Zombie

I really hope LEGO comes out with football players some day too...

Posted by ILikePi in United States, Nov 30 2009 12:11AM:

It has been confirmed by reliable Eurobricks members that each bag will have completely random parts of each minifig (for example, you can get a robot helmet, zombie head, cheerleader torso and spaceman legs all in one bag).

Posted by thomsedavi in New Zealand, Nov 30 2009 1:15AM:

I lose interest at the idea of random parts. It means that instead of just getting a couple for fun as I had planned, I'll have to collect lots just to get a complete minifigs. And that means lots of doubling up. :(

Posted by Topsy Cret in Sweden, Nov 30 2009 1:50AM:

Oh god. Please, LEGO, PLEASE don't do this... Not random parts. Although I have to hand it to TLG; it's a great money trap. I was going to try and get the Clown, Cheerleader and Nurse-just for the official needle.

Posted by nadnerb112 in United States, Nov 30 2009 8:10AM:

Well i can still feel the bag BUT i can't cheat and know what legs are what.. -_-

Posted by Rock Raider in Finland, Nov 30 2009 8:12AM:

So, no pirates series... but zombies! :-)

Posted by Alemas in United Kingdom, Nov 30 2009 8:21AM:

Ugh. Random minifig parts? No no! It would become a trading game- WAIT! I think LEGO wants to make tradeable minifig parts! Like trading cards! Get it? That's my theory, at least!

Posted by HQuiff in Ireland, Nov 30 2009 10:13AM:

I don't know why people are getting into such a frenzy about having Random Parts. I actually think it's a great idea, considering then you mightn't just get a Minifig with ALL parts you've got before, but get other things too.

Minifigs uniqueness lies in it's ability to switch parts to make your own Minifigs! So they are enforcing it by pushing different parts.

Posted by eMouse in United States, Nov 30 2009 10:17AM:

Curious what the collation of these will be.

For instance, if LEGO sells these in a case with 32 bags in it, will the case effectively contain 2 sets of figures, or will it be more random than that?

Posted by DJimBo in Netherlands, Nov 30 2009 10:58AM:

they..........look..............so...........*******.......................COOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want them all!!!!

Posted by carding in United Kingdom, Nov 30 2009 11:09AM:

ok, so I'm picturing a cross between top trump, football stickers, vintage minifigure collections, lego keyrings and chrome darth vader but random?!?!! I think that if lego put their minds to this very carefully it could work and be something good which we all know lego can do every now and then and I am really looking forward to this and if as Huw said in pounds they will cost about £2.20 that is £35.20 altogether. I have really good ideas that lego could use if they want to hire me in for £300 an idea and 15% of the profit from the collection. If they are the mini-figs of the badges I want that crash test dummy, he is so cool!;) not sure about the packing?;( (have you noticed that 16 mini-figs per wave is the same number as in the vintage minifigure collections 1,2,3 and 4 altogether, maybe I don't know wave 0!)

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, Nov 30 2009 11:15AM:

I wonder how this will work... Will it be that a clown hair, zombie head, robin hood body and crash test legs always come together in a bag, or will it be completely random? I hope it will be the first.
Looking forwards to series 2... wonder what minifigures will be in that!

jonbuddy, they're probably trying to increase sales. Expect slogans like "Complete Your Collection!" or "Build a Minifig!" It is really inconvenient, but logical. If people are buying scores of these at a time trying to get the parts they want, that means big bucks for Lego.

Great idea but if LEGO decides to go the route of the mixed parts from different figs in a single bag I would be less inclined to collect these figs. It would become too gimmicky for me. Collecting complete figs in a non see through bag would be gimmicky enough!

Posted by fubuki in Canada, Nov 30 2009 9:24PM:

I feel the contrary - having mixed parts makes me more excited to buy these sets.
I was worried every store I went to would be out of particular figs. At least this way you cant deplete all of one particular choice of head/legs/torso.
Nice idea LEGO! This really promotes the spirit of LEGO - making a robot caveman with pom-poms is my new goal.
It takes me back to the days I was into card collecting as a kid. The anxiety and excitement around opening the bag was the best part!!

Posted by Smallsam99 in United States, Nov 30 2009 9:44PM:

Very nice move, haven't paid much attention to lego lately but these look great! I would like to get the zombie, caveman, robin hood guy, ninja, cowboy, clown, and the dummy! So how much are these packs goin cost?

Posted by TooMuchDew in United States, Dec 1 2009 3:12AM:

@homoludens: Agreed! My only request is there be an equal number manufactured of each minifigure per series of 16. No chase, rare or ultra-rare figures/parts. Hopefully these will also be offered at all of the LEGO-branded stores as well as the theme parks. I don't know if you would ever be able to sell these in other retail stores because it seems you'd have to be able to keep customers from groping the opaque bags to try to determine the contents. The ability to purchase unopened/sealed/shrink-wrapped vending boxes of 32 figures from S@H would be aweome too. 25 SEK = approx 3.50 USD which seems right in line with Pokemon, YuGiOh, Magic: the Gathering and other collectible cards.

Posted by legoindyfan in Belgium, Dec 1 2009 11:51AM:

All of you worried about not getting a full fig in a bag, I would lay your worries to rest. My bet is that there will be all the parts to make a fig in every bag, just all mixed up between the characters!
And all of you worried about common fig parts (ie. Chase?!?!) - get over it, and read the article! These are COLLECTORS figs. I doubt they will even show up in a theme anytime soon. (except maybe the new Spaceman? Please?)

Um, I think there's been some confusion here. Every year since 2008, LEGOLAND Windsor have released these badges to the guests.
I have this years full collection and I don't think these will be available to buy... in shops... ever.
Nor do I think they will be made into minifigures... ever

DON'T QUOTE ME, I MAY BE WRONG

I have to say some of the parts are neat.

Carrying on from the original story, Brick Journal have found more new Lego business card designs, this time showing the gorgeous Cheer Leader & Magician figs in full (as well as some designs based on existing figs) -

To me this strengthens the idea that these will become real figs, and that they will be in our hands next summer ! Here's hoping :-)

WOHOO! They really DO look awesome! Just too life-like...

Posted by GameOn99 in United States, Dec 4 2009 11:44AM:

^ because they have those "unnatural arms and legs" so to speak, I wish lego could stick their arrms out.

Cool, we get two (count em') TWO honorable mentions and even a hat tipped at us, cool, me likey.

I'm not sure that some of these are new parts, but I think that they are.
I don't know what their legs look like except for #8 (Magician) and #2 (Cheerleader).

~greshmalum

(P.S.- I really think #15 looks like Nacho Libre =})
(P.P.S.- These are from the June wave, there will be 32 altogether after the August wave)

Has no-one noticed the bendy videogame styled cheerleader leg? Is it in any way possible that Lego would sculpt such a unique leg pose for just one minifig unless it is a super rare part?

And as for something occurring "every year since 2008", that hardly creates precedent as that is essentially saying it has just happened once...

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, Dec 6 2009 10:40AM:

@Sharpy- These are computer generated pictures, and I'm sure the actual figs will have straight, normal Legs.

Posted by AQUADIVERMASTER in Belgium, Dec 6 2009 1:01PM:

Eh... Huw, we know the price in Dollar, but could you name the price in Euro's too?

Posted by greshmalum in United States, Dec 6 2009 4:35PM:

are those badges from the june wave or the august wave

i hope we dont get the clutch powers hair with the nurse or cheerleader head or vica versa.

i was kinda dissapointed that the magician has plain black legs

Posted by GameOn99 in United States, Dec 7 2009 11:03AM:

greshmalum: there is nothing and by that I mean N.O.T.H.I.N.G that confirms that these new cards are in absolutly any way related to the poly-bag fig sets. They could be totaly unrelated for all we know and these are only half as cool as the ones coming. These could also be the August wave and the june-july ones are the secrets. Don't jump to fast, you'll fall 30 ft. and break your legs and your wallet if you don't like the other ones.

Posted by greshmalum in United States, Dec 8 2009 7:20AM:

GameOn99= I hope that the Cheerleader does have those legs, because they have design on them. It's just so rare that you get styled legs.

Posted by greshmalum in United States, Dec 8 2009 7:23AM:

That Astronaut has awesome legs! The Caveman, Astronaut, Nacho Libre, Cowboy, Cheerleader, and the Magician are the only ones I've seen in full, and they look great!

Posted by legostarwarsfreak in Canada, Dec 9 2009 7:33PM:

cool
