Harry Potter to make a comeback

  • Harry Potter to make a comeback

New set news Posted by Huw, Jan 6 2010 4:01AM

There have been rumours abound of new Harry Potter sets to co-incide with the release of the LEGO Harry Potter game later this year. We speculated that it would be foolish for LEGO not to produce some after they failed to meet demand for Batman sets following the LEGO Batman game release. Now we have proof they are imminent. The South African Kiddywinks toy store website lists six sets for October release, most of which appear to be reworkings of old sets with the exception of 'The Burrows' (the Weasley's house) which, given its strange architecture, could be interesting. You can see a complete list here.

Great - I'd recently started buying up some of the old sets, but it'll be excellent to have some new ones. Agree that "The Burrows" sounds particularly interesting.

Incidentally, that'll be 4 versions of Hogwarts in just a few years !! Must be some kind of record for re-releases of licensed sets.

This is great!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, Jan 6 2010 6:32AM:

I'm looking forward to these too. I have a complete set of Harry Potter minifigs (but not of sets -- I refused to buy the Durmstang ship!) so I'll hopefully be able to add a few new ones to it.

Posted by Alemas in United Kingdom, Jan 6 2010 6:51AM:

That's GREEEEEEAT! I think I'll buy some of these, even if I never watched the movies!
@Huw: Why didn't you buy the Durmstrang ship?

Posted by Brickmaster47 in Australia, Jan 6 2010 8:04AM:

I'd like to see a release of the Chamber of Secrets, perhaps?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, Jan 6 2010 8:40AM:

@Alemas, because it was rubbish :-)

Posted by mojolego in United States, Jan 6 2010 8:50AM:

Hopefully Lego has gone to the trouble of making use of its new steam engine wheels in designing the Hogwarts Express. Would be a shame to do otherwise.

Posted by rogue venom in Norway, Jan 6 2010 9:28AM:

cool. i liked that theme like some years ago. i might get a set.

Posted by mngoult in United Kingdom, Jan 6 2010 10:05AM:

Its nice to know other people think the Durmstrang ship is rubbish, i thought i was on my own. I hope they don't do to the burrow what they did with privot drive and make it more of a shreiking shack instead.

Posted by GameOn99 in United States, Jan 6 2010 10:22AM:

love the books, love the new game(i know i will), love the movies, so you know we're gonna love these these new sets. I do so want to see a burrow, i wonder what kind of play features it will have, not bursting into flames i hope(so sad). I hope the new hogwarts is even better, i only have the first one but I was just hoping for a good train set and was considering emerald night but now I can just get the hogwarts express. I hope that it will have real compartsments, or I will have to make my own.

Posted by Foxlord in United States, Jan 6 2010 11:07AM:

as someone who missed out the first time on the Lego Harry Potter sets, this news makes me very very happy :)
Hopefully that's not all of the sets as I'd love to have the Shrieking Shack and Graveyard Duel and not have to pay a fortune on ebay for them.
Daigon Alley and Griffindor House would be nice, just for the rare elements.

Posted by TooMuchDew in United States, Jan 6 2010 11:29AM:

COMPLETELY unscientific speculation here... but based on the Kiddywinks original retail for Durmstrang Ship I came up with 139% markup over original US MSRP. Multiplying ZAR x .61 then convert to USD for the 6 new 2010 sets gives rough estimates as to pricing: 4736 Dobby's Release $13.96, 4737 Quidditch Lesson $24.43, 4738 Hagrid's Hut $48.86, 4840 The Burrows $69.76, 4841 Hogwart's Express $84.39, 4842 Hogwart's Castle $139.69 (or I could be full of rubbish) I hoped for this four months ago when the teaser trailer first broke :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/toomuchdew/3887804604/

I was appalled when I realised that the first Hogwarts express had normal wheels without tyres rather than flanged train wheels. I just don't think I can bring myself to buy it, even though I was hoping to eventually collect all the H.P. sets.

I really hope that the new Hogwarts Express has proper train wheels - I agree that it would be a perfect opportunity to use the new Emerald Express wheels. Pity to include those in just one set.....

I'm happy to find out about this. The heads and body parts might be useful for starwars minifigs. And the game looks awesome !

GREAT!

I can't wait to see the pics of these new sets. I deeply hope this years Hogwarts Express is a little like the Emerald Night.
I recentley bought the 4767, which was one of the latest sets I needed to complete my Harry Potter sets.
So I'm really happy there are comming new releases so I can keep spending my money. :)
Anyone who has any quint of picture of link, please let me know!!!

Oh, and a Huw, have you ever build the Durmstang Ship, I'm pretty sure you will change you mind about it.
I totally fits with the other sets.

Peter.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, Jan 6 2010 2:18PM:

I think it's a given that the new Hogwart's Express will use the new large train wheels: I can see no reason why it wouldn't. Let's hope it's also dark red and not just red.

I wrote a letter to LEGO Systems that had a warning that the LEGO Harry Potter Video Game would not be as popular as the other LEGO games because of the lack of LEGO Harry Potter sets being made since 2007.

Posted by Greyface in United States, Jan 6 2010 5:33PM:

Yay, I won't have to buy Lucius Malfoy on eBay !!!

@TheLEGOFanatic - Oh, I think it'll be popular without them. There will be new HP sets on the shelves, and people know LEGO games are good from the success of Star Wars, Indy, and Batman. Plus, Harry Potter has a huge fanbase.

Posted by copperwonder96 in United States, Jan 6 2010 6:08PM:

Interesting...I am not so much a HP fan but I thought it was good news! Funny thing is I asked the manager of the Lego Store in my Town if she heard the rumor about the HP return. She acknowledged and I asked if she was happy. Yes and No---Happy because the HP fans will be thrilled, no because everyone else will be hateful? Hateful? Really? Apparently the HP line is very niche and she said they had a hard time "getting rid" of the last line. Hopefully this one will be well designed and other fans will enjoy.

I cant wait! I would've killed for the 2007 castle, but i never got it. so i am DEFENITLY getting the new one. lets just hope it comes with as many mf.

Posted by KJM72 in United States, Jan 6 2010 7:51PM:

Great! This might mean more use of purple, seeing it was brought back for Toy Story.

Posted by MasterOfPuzzles in United States, Jan 6 2010 8:30PM:

Isn't October a bit late for the game (due March). I guess movie 7 (part 1) is out in November though...

Posted by merkinized75 in Croatia, Jan 7 2010 1:08PM:

The Durmstrang ship looks small and like a one-piece toy, not a Lego set.

Posted by Zacherano in United States, Jan 7 2010 6:36PM:

I am also a huge fan of the HP books, movies, and Lego, so I can't wait for the new sets. Although my collection of sets and minifigures is almost complete, I do not own a Hogwarts Express or Hagrid's Hut, so I am happy about the new sets.

For those of you who missed out on the first three Hogwarts Castles (I own the first and the third) I am sure you will be satisfied with the new one, which will probably be based on Movie 7, because each castle has tons of great new features and minifigures. I hope one of them comes with a Trelawney - she is pretty much the only minifigure from Lego HP which I do not own.

Posted by legofanatic2414 in United States, Jan 8 2010 2:14AM:

Never was a fan but it'd be nice to have a few (if they don't cost too much, hey im saving up for the Death Star!)Huw,do you REALLY have ALL of the harry potter minifigures?

LEGOFANATIC2414 OUT!-

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, Jan 8 2010 2:38AM:

@legofanatic2414, yes, I did an inventory of them last night: 86 different ones in total.

Posted by ShockZap in United States, Jan 8 2010 4:41PM:

I'm just glad there's a Dobby minifig. I misse douit on the earlier one and I reallt want one (or two, or three!)

Posted by Greyface in United States, Jan 8 2010 5:49PM:

@Huw or some moderater - thanks for merging my posts.

@Huw - wow...

@Zacherano - I am also a huge fan. However, you will notice that Trelawney was cut from Movie 6 and will not appear in either parts of Movie 7 (or 8 for that matter), so its sadly very unlikely she'll appear in the new castle. I hope this castle comes with McGonagall, and a Bellatrix minifig would be great...

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, Jan 8 2010 6:53PM:

It's likely that the new sets will tie into the new game, which only covers the first four books/movies, so I'd set your expectations accordingly.

Posted by GameOn99 in United States, Jan 8 2010 9:38PM:

@ bluemoose: good point, I totally forgot about that fact, you may be right. also, do you think that the game will be more geared twords the movies or books? hopefully not to origianal like indy 2, I am hoping for a more book-aimed game with levels like indy 1 and extras like level builder, playsets and bonus levels like Indy 2

I am so glad to hear that the burrow will be a cool big size set and not some tiny little 40 usd lame set.

@ huw: where did the sets on that site go, I do not see them, just the ship which explains why that is a big discussion. also: why are the set's release so stagered, we have july, augest, june and october releaces. Any news on this? I think that this is not a wise move as people will not know what they want to buy if not everything is out in the open at the same time.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, Jan 9 2010 4:23AM:

> where did the sets on that site go

It looks as if LEGO intervened and asked for them to be removed.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, Jan 9 2010 9:04AM:

Huw, if you didn't get the Durmstrang Ship how did you get Karkahoff? Ebay?

Posted by Zacherano in United States, Jan 9 2010 2:10PM:

@Greyface - Thanks for enlightening me about that one. I also think it would be cool if Lego made a Bellatrix minifig. Maybe a Trelawney might be included to match the new game, though. Also... if you don't have a McGonagall, I recommend buying Dumbledore's Office on Brickset, which in my opinion is one of the best of the HP sets and currently the only one to include McGonagall.

@bluemoose - Thanks!

I can only hope the Burrow looks like the one on this pic.

I hope that they do use the Emerald Night wheels, though I hope it isn't a re-coloured Emerald Night. Hogwarts Castle is a smaller locomotive and doesn't have the two wheels at the back. I hope they do more coaches too, even for Emerald Night.

This is for Huw, if you have all the HP minifigs I was just wondering how big your entire lego collection is? Where do you put it all?! As there is a feature on your site where you can tick each set you own I wonder if we can see the list of your collection please? Just curious!

Jon

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, Jan 11 2010 3:11PM:

@Jonny 2 Scarves, my collection is public, http://www.brickset.com/search/?ownedBy=Huw, although it's not 100% accurate, I still have a few recent (last 3 years) sets to add.

Posted by Jonny 2 Scarves in United Kingdom, Jan 12 2010 2:05PM:

Huw, my goodness, how big is your house to store all those sets?! Do you live in a warehouse?! The only I think I spotted I have that you don't is the Batman Arkham Asylum set.

I also have the 2008 San Diego Comic-con Indiana Jones set that was limited to just 500 sets I think. Do you have that one? I can't see a category to search for the SDCC exclusive sets, have I just missed it?

Thanks a lot!

Jon

I hope it's coming soon.

Incredible collection! I am extremely impressed.

Posted by atkinsar in Hong Kong, Jan 16 2010 4:43AM:

Seriously Huw, I'm genuinely interested in hearing how you house your massive LEGO collection. I'm really struggling with a paltry collection of 300, around 100 of which I'm not 'allowed' to build because there's nowhere to put them. My attic is now full, I may need to hire some additional storage at this rate!!

As for these new HP sets, I don't own any of the original sets so these release are welcomed by me for one.

Posted by Camo Hat in United States, Jan 17 2010 3:07PM:

im so excited. i missed out on the original harr potter sets so these new releases are very welcome to me. but why dont they release the sets along with the game.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, Jan 18 2010 4:27AM:

@atkinsar, I live in a three storey house, the top floor has a large 'studio' room which is my LEGO room. I'll dig out some pictures of it for you.

Posted by atkinsar in Hong Kong, Jan 18 2010 9:50AM:

@Huw, Ha, I've already told the wife our next house MUST have a LEGO room !! I am always looking for creative ways to display my collection so I'd definitely like to see some pictures, I'll swap you some pictures of my minifig display cases if you want.

Posted by Zacherano in United States, Jan 18 2010 3:51PM:

@Huw - My collection is nowhere even near the size of yours, at about 150 sets (I have been collecting for about nine to ten years now). I have also spent a fairly large amount of money on loose minifigures, but I have decided it is worth it more to buy the sets, and since they are coming out with so many Star Wars remakes, I now find the desire to buy some of the new remakes - I may have to limit myself.

Anyway, I possess one minifigure display space, and perhaps display space for about ten to 15 large collector's sets and some smaller sets, maybe 15 to 30. Thus, most of my sets are bagged up neatly, in labelled Ziplocs. It is a pity, however, that I do not have an actual storage system, but rather bagged up sets residing for the time being in clear boxes. I am amazed at your collection!

Posted by barrenaaron in United States, Jan 19 2010 8:47AM:

This is wonderful; I have purchased every HP set thus far, including all three variations of the Hogwarts Express, and a fourth is welcomed; "Hogwarts Castle" has never been re-released, it's a different section of the castle that corresponds to the main theme of the movie for that particular release. I was actually depressed when LEGO stopped the HP line with the few HP5 LEGO movie tie-ins; I also found it interesting that there were no 'cheap' sets for kids... each line really should have several under $10 sets IMHO. Though there were no HP6 sets, I'll be ectastic for HP7 sets if they are indeed released in Oct prior to the HP7 PT1 movie; I don't mind movie tie-in LEGO sets, but it would be great for them to include some of the wonderful stuff that TT is doing for the LEGO HP game. The HP LEGO game is based off of the books, NOT the movie BTW. The game has been pushed back to the end of April (per pre-order on Amazon), it is no longer being released in March. Cannot wait... what a great year for HP & LEGO.
