    10232 Palace Cinema

    grogall has uncovered this picture of the next modular building, Palace Cinema. The image has come from shop.LEGO.com, as you can see, but it's not for sale there yet and there's no word on official release date or prices. It must be imminent, though, given the picture's been put on the server. 

    Note the clear 'Creator Expert' labelling, which it's believed will be used for all LEGO Exclusives (that are not obviously attached to another theme) in future.

    The image's release was probably inadvertent, so we may be asked to remove it.

This looks incredible! Look at the architecture of the building, some Oriental curves are evident there and that vintage car looks fantastic too. This set will also go very well with the Batman theme I would imagine given the fact that the villains often seem to have cinema related master plans, so I cannot wait to display my Batman Minifigures around this set.

I would hazard a guess at somewhere in the region 129.99 GBP, but interior images would no doubt shed some more light on the possible price. I am assuming that it is mostly open inside since there must be a large actual cinema area. We will have to wait and see.

Will be interesting to see the interior and what mini models will be inside; projector, pop corn machine, balcony, etc. This modular series and other similar sets have become a yearly eagerly anticipated set(s).

2012 sets made the most financially difficult year so far for me, I'm actually glad there is not loads of 2013 I am excited about but always Creator/ Exclusives.

Wow, looks fantastic. I can not think of a single more iconic downtown building than an old theater, and this one is magnificent. I am also excited to see what the interior holds. I am hoping for some kind of projector and screen, and balcony seating.

Exciting stuff. Do you think any of the existing modulars will be discontinued to make way for this? My money is on the Grand Emporium given its also a corner building. Any thoughts?

I feel a bit underwhelmed. Not what i expected at all. I like what i see of the palace sign. minifigures look ok from what i can see. Althoughthat red torso looks from the petshop. The colours work well i suppose but i feel cheated on that middle floor. Also i don't think this will go at all next to my other modulars.

This does look very nice, but somehow I was kind of hoping for a more classic 50's cinema that wasn't a corner building. Having a theater interior in a corner modular...it will be interesting to see how they've worked it out. Ultimately, this doesn't seem quite as versatile to me in a corner format.

I can't say anything bad about the architectural styling and LEGO details, though. It is quite magnificent.

Hmmmm. I'm also not too keen on the Chinatown feel of it. Also, I was not expecting another corner building this time around. It is also a pet peeve of mine to mix upper case and lower case letters as is done here with PaLaCE. This will be a tough decision as I have all the other modulars. I'm hoping it's a fan mock-up and not really the next modular building.

I'd say the theater/studio/auditorium section of the set can't be too different than the one in the town plan set. But at the most, there would probably only be 2 studios, or, if more detailed than town plan, maybe just 1 studio. Also, in Indonesia, all cinemas are always in shopping malls, never as a standalone building, so I am wondering, what could be in the second floor?

Also, is this the first modular building with a car? Is this the 3rd corner modular building after cafe corner and grand emporium? Is modular buildings mostly 2-floored (Like this one, i think) or 3-floored (like the town hall, if memory serves me right)? and if there are difference, are the rooftop level about the same? I'm not the most knowledgeable person in this topic, so i would really appreciate an answer.

Also, @Huw, could you post a news article when the official press release happened along with the designer video like the other direct exclusives sets?

I was very excited to see photos of this set when I first heard of it. I'm not entirely sold on it yet. I'll have to wait and see more photos from LEGO before making a decision on whether or not I'd get it.

I agree with a lot of what Andrew85 said. The theatre is a bit underwhelming and doesn't look like it'll fit in with the rest of the modular buildings.

No, most of the modulars are 3 floors. The Fire Brigade is the odd ball with only 2 floors. The rooftops are of a similar level but one exactly the same, expect for the Town Hall.

I'm a little disappointed it's a corner modular. It seems a little too soon. But then again if you exclude Market Street, which is semi-official to begin with, it's right. Well I can't wait to see more photos.

Sure I will buy, but being it a corner building puts me off a little. We already have 2 corner buildings and 5 regular modular buildings. Adding this corner building to an existing layout means that you need a lot of extra display size -- at least twice the space you had before.

Two more comments: (1) it looks like this set has many stickers, which is a negative.
(2) the picture shows a couple of spot lights. Maybe there are light bricks included? This obviously would fit in the Creator theme.

I love that it is a corner building, personally. I, like many fans, came onto the Lego scene too late to get the Cafe Corner at a reasonable price. My only option for a corner modular has been the Grand Emporium. Now, I will have 2 corner buildings, which is nice. Plus, it's so pretty! Just look at it...

@dutchlegofan50 - Unless they are producing a new light brick, I doubt that a light brick would fit in those spotlights. I presume the light is just photo-shopped in for effect.

Just finished a 2 year renovation project of a rundown cinema in Hong Kong. From that, I reckon the movie theatre inside will have two, possibly three levels of seats, and some on the side. Also expecting a projector booth tucked away, and maybe some rigging above the main screen

Truly amazing. I get where people are coming from with this not being "spot on" with the other mods but will I still get it? ABSOLUTELY! Its a continuation of the beautiful modulars and if it is one thing I have learned with LEGO, if I dont get it for reason X,Y,Z and it is discontinued I suddenly want it 100 times more and have to pay twice as much. So I'll get it, maybe leave in the box a while and then build...

As a cinema employee and manager for more than a decade, this set has the potential to fulfill so many LEGO wants and yet also fail miserably. Trying to keep hopes and expectations in check, but VERY excited.

I've been looking for ways to accept this new modular and came up with these:

1. Graumans in LA (which this looks a whole lot like) dates back to the 1920s, so it does place it in the same era as the others

2. Star Wars had its world premier there

Love it. As a filmmaker and a LEGO employee this set couldn't get any closer to my 'heart'. The 20's aesthetic is great and I look forward to seeing what the 'movie posters' have on them.

I also wonder what color baseplate it is built upon. Looks almost DARK RED to me from this image..?

It is a little bit plain in some respects - the detailing on the walls isn't really there, some of the bigger features are nice though. It will be interesting to see how it is priced and how much detailing is inside...maybe thats where the money is being spent. Either way...i will get it but will need to see more to be convinced its not a disapointment compared with the rest...

Interesting that Cafe corner 'only' cost around £90 when it came out, Grand emporium was £140ish.... how much more do they think we can pay for a corner modular !!

I am very much intrigued by the sloping roofs on either side of the central tower. That looks fantastic, but could it be as simple as tilting a stack of one by two log bricks of varying colours? Or are the different shades of red just the effect of shadows? Either way, I love it.

Interesting. Having trouble working out what's going on with the front door. Looks like just a pair of brown doors at 45 degrees with a tan bar on each as a pull handle. Not so keen on the grey grabber plates appearing in the middle of the tan pillars. The green cup thingy between the doors appears to be an interior detail. Also interesting that the left and right sides of the building are different (grey arch on right) so like Cafe Corner in that asymmetrical respect.

This will most likely be a £99.99 product as it is replacing the Fire Brigade in February.

It looks fabulous, though i'll reserve judgement till we get them in stock at my store. The roof appears to be made from a combination of 1x1 round studs and 1x cylinder components, which are then tilted on an angle. Note also that the very light/pale blue components on the top of the ground floor are actually the new 'brick' style 1x2's.

My guess with regards to the interior - based on the fact that there are windows on the first floor - is that an 'L-shaped' corridor exists inside and that is what the windows are lighting up. This would then provide a perfect box environment for the theatre itself, albeit it's going to be very small.

I think TLG are using the same tactic as with the Horizon Express and Grand Emporium; purchase more than one to complete the whole effect. I imagine this cinema could look absolutely stunning if it was doubled up well.

I think it has a very classical modern look to it as well. I have looked at this picture many times since yesterday and I think although it fits nicely with the Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium feel for early to mid 1900's; it does a great job extending into modern times, I mean, if this really is modeled after a theatre in LA, that theatre is still in use!

I cannot wait for the second corner building, I only have the Grand Emporium so I can finally have some symmetry to my city block. I am excited to see what the inside looks like, with that, I agree with a lot of others so far that I can only base my opinion on this one picture, and we dont even have confirmation that this is the next modular, but once we get more pictures it will be fun to discuss.

Price wise I think this could go back to the $149.99 range, I think Town Hall was an anomally due to its size and character. Just my two cents.

I don't get why people are criticizing this - it is utterly fabulous. The same people complained that the FireStation modular didn't fit in style-wise with the other modulars too, even though it looked stunning.

As a modular fan I now have a complete city block, because when I bought the Grand Emporium, Lego accidentally sent me two of it.

Lego have really lifted their game on this one - I will be interested to see which designer built it. When I first saw the Town Hall, I thought it was cool, and awesome colour scheme - but this set is just wow.

These modular downtown buildings are outrageously $100 or more! I think the real price should be no more then $50.
The only bad thing about them, the mini-figures have plain expressionless faces and that forces people to steal some from the build your own mini-figure facility at the Lego store. Maybe they will also have very little furniture such as green grocer and pet shops buildings but the city hall was well furnished.

These modulars typically contain over 2,000 pieces. You aren't going to get the detail with a smaller piece count and you aren't going to get a low price with a high piece count.

Re: Konstantin - The value for $150 is well worth it. Maybe you're just trolling, but if you're not then let me just say that nothing justifies you stealing Lego pieces from a store. That's just awful.

I'm really excited about this one! It looks gorgeous, but I'm reserving true judgement until I see the interior and full shots. I'm really worried about the ideas of stickers in the modulars, though. Why start with them now? That's one of the things I really LOVE about the modular buildings: no stickers that will mess up over time.

@Omnius: I don't think we had any reason to think baseplates were completely dead, though it's a pleasant surprise getting a baseplate in what seems to be a new/rare color. On a side note, I've got a modular road concept that I'd like to put on Cuusoo sometime that would allow modular buildings to be used alongside modern-day sets built onto standard plates. I think this sort of thing is long overdue since frankly I've seen too many instances where the modulars and City buildings alike have needed to be "transplanted" onto road plates to work in train layouts and tabletowns. With my concept that would no longer be the case.

I like the car, but it's a pass for me on this set unless the interior is amazing. I don't like it being a corner building, its size (I like the thinner modulars), never liked tan bricks, and the LA / Chinese cinema doesn't really fit with the theme of the rest of my city.
