Review: 70001 Crawley's Claw Ripper

70001 Crawley's Claw RipperContinuing with our reviews of sets from the highly-anticipated Legends Of Chima theme that's just hit the stores, today I'm going to take a look at one of the smaller sets in the theme, 70001, Crawley's Claw Ripper, which weighs in at £12.99, US$14.99, for 139 pieces and two minifigs.

Like the Eagle Interceptor I reviewed a couple of days ago, this one also takes design cues from the species that drives it, in this case crocodiles.

    Box and contents

The box is about the size you'd expect for a set of this price. It's only just occurred to me that the image on the top-right of the box shows the tribe the set primarily relates to, in this case crocodiles, which are, apparently, 'baddies'. The set also contains a 'goodie', Leonidas from the lion tribe.

There are two instruction booklets and a small sticker sheet with three stickers. Apart from the minifig and weapon parts there are no new parts in the set, but there are a lot of olive green parts, including cheese and double cheese slopes, 2x4 tiles, and curved slopes. It's great to see more of this colour being used.

    Minifigs

The protagonist in the set is Crawley, one of the Crocodile 'minions' it seems. His olive green body with dark red highlights looks great. Here's a view of him without his 'head'. Crawley seems like a strange name to me: I used to work in a town called Crawley in the south-east of England :-)

Like other LoC figures, he has a double sided head with a different facial expression on the back.

Here's Leonidas, with his CHI weapon. As someone commented on DrDave's review of CHI Waterfall, he looks a bit drunk, doesn't he...

    The Claw Ripper

The Claw Ripper is a gruesome looking machine with its crocodile mouth-like front, which is hinged to open. The three-pronged claws on the sides rotate when the vehicle is pushed forwards, via the caterpillar tracks. Leonidas would do well to steer clear of it!

There's not much to see at the back, other than a small 'postbox' housing the CHI crystal.

    Conclusion

One thing I am particularly liking about the theme is that the designers have been able to let their imaginations run wild and come up with models that look like nothing we've seen before, and like nothing that actually exists.

The minifigs in the set are again superb, although one shortcoming of having them all named instead of generic lions or crocodiles or whatever, is that you end up with duplicates. If you buy all the LoC sets you'll end up with three Leonidas and two Crawleys.

It's not quite as compelling as the Eagle Interceptor, but nevertheless it's another interesting set in the Legends of Chima theme.

This is my favourite set of the three I have so far (those being the three smallest models). The caterpillar tracks feature is quite fun if you ask me, and I like how the bodywork has been done to create the crocodile resemblance.

Maybe they should've named the lion "Later" instead seeing as he has the same dopey smile as Mater from Cars.

This one gets a pass from me. Both minifigures are among (if not the) least interesting ones from their respective "tribes" and the vehicle itself is so-so, though olive parts are nice. The slightly more expensive set, 70002, also features a lion and a crocodile but those two are much better-looking (one not-dopey-looking lion and the brown croc with the metal jaw).

Crawley in particular looks superb, I'm really liking the minifigs in LoC.

I have to say that the minifigs are the best thing with LoC. The gorilla tribe and the independant characters looks just as stunning.

The Chima vehicles remind me of the He-Man toys from the 1980s and this one does in particular. On the whole, I'm not a fan of the series, though some of the figs are nice.

Just picked this up from Asda for £11.99 - looking forward to getting into it now! Happy new year all.

Those figures are ugly and the plastic and paint both look as faded and poor quality as the set as a whole.

Disappointing!

Those fronts are fantastic! I love the minifigs, and the integration of the actual animal is just excellent. The backs of the vehicles aren't that great, though (except for the eagle). Probably won't get these, but they aren't too bad, to be honest. Maybe they'll be better as time goes on.

The only thing that's good about this set is the animal jaws and the "postbox" in the back (reminds me of the MT-61 Crystal Reaper from Mars Mission). The main cockpit area where Crawley sits is absolutely terrible!!

Would you recommend it? I'd like to know, as it costs $23 here.

Will you be doing a review of Craggers Command Ship? I'm not sure whether to get it.

There is an awesome review of the craggers command ship on YouTube, including whether it floats or not!
