Review: 70000 Razcal's Glider

  • Review: 70000 Razcal's Glider

Posted by Huw, 02 Jan 2013 06:14. Filed under Set review.

70000 Razcal's Glider70000 Razcal's Glider is the smallest of the Legends Of Chima construction sets, weighing in at 109 pieces, £7.99 / US$11.99.

It contains one minifig, the Razcal of the set's title, and like all other LoC construction sets we've reviewed so far, is made to look like the species that flies it, in this case the ravens who, in the Chima universe, are allies of the crocodiles and wolves and thus are 'baddies'.

    Box and contents

It's packed in a small square flimsy cardboard box which features a raven's head in the top-right corner.

There are a number of new parts, including Shaft Ø3.2 Wing 9M in purple, Claw 1X4X1 W/ Ø3.2 Shaft in light grey, a CHI crystal, and printed 1 x 2 tiles.

The grey 'claw' is made of a flexible plastic and appears in many Chima sets and is used for claws, teeth, and in this case, a beak.

    Minifig

The single minifig is Razcal, a raven minion, who appears only in this set. He's constructed in the same way as other ravens.

    The completed model

The model does, in my view, look very bird-like. There's space on the back to mount Razcal, and when he's up there, his weapon hilt can be clipped to the side and the purple blades attached to the back as shown, to represent feathers. The CHI crystal mounts on its back, I believe as a power source for the vehicle.

One thing that amused me is that there is some sort or weapon attached by a chain, which fires out its butt. I think it's purpose is to capture other tribe members or CHI.

    Conclusion

As you can probably tell I am enjoying the Chima models more than I thought I would. This is a neat little model which would make a worthwhile 'impulse buy' either for yourself or as a gift and is a good introduction to the theme.

The minifig is, in common with all LoC figs, excellent, and even better, unique to this set.

The only criticism I have really, is the use of the Bush W/Connecting Piece for its feet, in blue. They look wrong, being the only blue pieces in the set. I thought it was because that was the only colour this part came in but as you can see from the linked page, a black one is used in other Chima sets.

    • Building experience - 8, quick and easy, no interesting techniques.
    • Parts - 8, plenty of the great new wing pieces and other interesting parts. No stickers.
    • Playability - 7, fun to fly around the room, but could do with an opponent.
    • Value for Money - 8, about the right price, and for once the £/$ ratio is spot on.

Another great review Huw, I am finding myself desperately trying not to collect the entire theme, I have already picked up a couple of the smaller ones and these reviews are doing me and my wallet no good at all...

Sorry about that :-)

Yes, I blame Huw too for my sudden desire to get these. :P Thankfully/regretfully they haven't been released here yet so wallet is safe for now.

I don't plan on getting this one though since you get some ravens and a similar style of glider (albeit much smaller/simpler) in the Eagle Interceptor set, but I can imagine myself picking this one up in a moment of weakness somewhere down the line.

I'd expect these not to arrive at Indonesia before February :( I'm willing to bet that there will be a review of 70100 Ring of fire, but then will there be more?

70100 should be up fairly soon. I'm planning on doing more, once I have/built them

I just put mine together last night as well. It's a great little set and I was happy to see no stickers!

The blue bush for the feet must take its inspiration from the real life blue footed booby

These reviews are making me want a few Chima sets. :P This one is a nice little set for $12 so I'll probably end up buying it.

This was my first Chima set.

To my suprise my daughter "stole" it from me after it was built. "flying it around the room and using the talons to pick up other lego people.

Next on the list is the large Eagle ship.

On a side note TRU has announced a Chima tournament on 1-26. Not sure if they will be handing out anything free.

The building techniques and finished appearance are absolutely terrible. I do not have anything good to say for this set; thus, for the safety of all Brickset members, I feel as if it would be preferable if I don't say anything else, aside from the first sentence.

Have they uploaded all of the Chima instructions to LEGO.com yet?

EDIT: Upon further examination, I can say that the bottom half is way too bulky compared to the top; more plates- instead of bricks- could have easily been used to minimize this. Just, as I said before, fine details that could be changed to make these sets better.

I was equally impressed, Huw.

Why do you always capitalize "chi"?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 03 Jan 2013 03:12

^ Because LEGO does.

Great reviews on Chima Huw, unfortunately I will not be buying any as I think the Figures are ugly and lumpy and the sets to technicy.

Just ordered this set off shop.lego.com.au :D

Just in time for my birthday in February, I hope.

Doesn't Razcal also appear in one of the newly revealed Chima Polybags? The Double-Crosser or something? Hmm, still this model looks tempting. A shame none of the Chima sets have hit Canada yet, as far as I know, I'm waiting to see if Wal-Mart charges less than TRU for the Speedorz or not, or if TRU just appears to be selling them more because of typical price raising practices. Must Resist Chima sets to avoid going completist on another Theme. (Or almost completist at any rate.)

Upon seeing these at first, I thought they were sets that my family and I could easily overlook. I figured my son would continue to be interested in modular buildings, SW and Ninjago and my daughter in Friends - with a few random superhero and Galaxy Squad sets thrown in for good measure. These excellent reviews gave me the first hint that they might be worthwhile. Then, after several quite moments reading the latest catalogue and club magazines, my 7 year old son looked at me and said, "Dad, these new Chima sets are BREATHTAKING!"

Using a TRU giftcard, our first purchase was 70115 Ultimate Speedor Tournament, and it does not disappoint. Exceptional minifigures, speedors that work very well, great playability, a cool selection of new elements, sharp design, etc., etc. My son has spent every moment since seeing the magazine and then getting the set talking about it, playing with it, etc. He has been consumed with plotting which sets he wants next, and has totally revised his birthday "wishlist" accordingly. I can only imagine what will happen once the television show arrives...

My favorite part of the new Legends of Chima sets are the Avians and all their Feathers:

@BeMild Our house has been taken over with Chima-feva (see what I did there) too.

We also picked up the Ultimate Speedor Tournament, and my 5 yo old son and myself have been having great fun with it. My 3 yo daughter acts as our 'referee', as she's to small to quite get the hang of the Speedorz!
