Sears.ca publishes confidential image of LotR set

  • Sears.ca publishes confidential image of LotR set

Posted by Huw, 17 Jan 2013 17:13. Filed under New sets.

Sears.ca has published a watermarked image of forthcoming LotR set, 79007 Battle at the Black Gate.

The product description reads: "Fly the Great Eagle high above the Black Gate of Mordor where Aragorn and Gandalf the White must distract the Eye of Sauron. Use them to stage a scene while Frodo Baggins and his friend Sam throw the One Ring into the fiery depths of Mount Doom and destroy it forever. To reach the Ring's final destination, you must defeat the Mouth of Sauron and the Mordor Orcs positioned high in the spiked gate walls. Then breach the gate and lead the attack on the enemy!

"Includes a Great Eagle and 5 minifigures with weapons: Aragorn, Gandalf the White, Mouth of Sauron and 2 Mordor Orcs."

I won't be linking to it or displaying it here; a large corporation like Sears should really know better than to breach confidentiality with LEGO and I suspect now that the issue has been highlighted here, it will be removed before long.

So, go and find it for yourself while you still can :-)

Thanks to TheBrickTeen and several others for bringing it to our attention.

Seems to be a decent set with new minifigs!
But for me this isn't that interesting as the Hobbit- an unexpected gathering was...

Posted by f-man in United States, 17 Jan 2013 17:44

I was hoping for the troll Aragorn faces in that scene but oh well. Looks decent.

Posted by Isabella and Lego Liker in United States, 17 Jan 2013 17:45

Silly Sears! They should know better than that.

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 17 Jan 2013 17:47

Interesting set, I rather like it, much more than I thought I would at least. When Lego takes on a large scene like this one I do not hold out much hope for the set, but it looks great to me!

Posted by Derek93 in Ireland, 17 Jan 2013 17:48

Did anyone try buy it? seems you can add to cart.

Posted by Firox 5000 in United Kingdom, 17 Jan 2013 17:55

Looks like a fairly good set figure and design wise but doesn't quite take the edge like the hobbit and most of the wave one LOTR sets did last year.

Posted by tmgm528 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 17:58

Saved to my computer :D

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:01

Looks small for a $70+ dollar set.

Also this has to be the most useless news story ever.

Posted by tmgm528 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:02

/\ Does look small but this is not useless. Huw cant post confidential images so hes saying go there and look.

Posted by legos in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:05

I just checked, and it seems as though Sears has taken it off their website :[ But, Sears shouldn't have posted it in the first place. i really wish I could have seen it though!

Posted by tmgm528 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:07

/\ Glad I saved it to my computer only 10 minutes ago!

Posted by BJ21 in United Kingdom, 17 Jan 2013 18:07

^ It's still there - I just searched for black gate, rather than looking in their Lego section.

Posted by binaryeye in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:09

^^^ That's the price in Canadian dollars. Sets with that price in Canadian dollars are generally $60 in US dollars. The set apparently has ~650 pieces, so the price (if accurate) is quite low for a set of that size.

Posted by Zordboy in Australia, 17 Jan 2013 18:11

Yeah, search for "Black Gate". The picture looks pretty nifty, and the Eagle looks good.

Posted by tmgm528 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:13

/\/\ Not enough mini figures for 60 Us dollars (where Im from)
/\ Eagle did look great except feet and legs don't appear to be moveable

Posted by LEGOMANWA in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:25

The set (79007) has 655. Other cool sets in the TLOR line up include the 79008 Pirate Ship Ambush 756 pieces, which includes Aragorn, Legolas Greenlead, Gimli, 2 Mordor Orcs, the King of the Dead, 2 Soldiers of the dead and a Pirate of Umbar. 79006 The Council of Elrond, 243 pieces includes Elrond, Arwen, Frodo Baggins and Gimli. 79005 The Wizard Battle, 113 pieces includes Gandalf the Grey and Saruman. All these sets have official release date in the second part of the year.

Please help as I am very new to leaked prelim pics etc.
Gandalf the white has yellow hair, a grey beard and a green cape, mouth of Sauron is a ringwraith and basically the figures in the main pic are horrible but the minifig picture on the bottom corner of the box looks perfect.
Is this normal, Is it just that they had not made the helmut so they just used a ringwraith or had not made a white cloak so just used a green one for the pic.
what is going on with the differences.

Posted by LuvKernow in United Kingdom, 17 Jan 2013 18:32

Looks meh to me...

Posted by tmgm528 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:33

/\/\ This is preliminary its not done yet. The new parts they will need are not made yet so they replace them with a wringwraith and yellow hair. This is not what it will look like.

Posted by tmgm528 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:36

/\ He said he is new to preliminary images and didnt know what it meant.

"The eagles are coming"

And I am happy about it :)

Thank you for posting this, and keep up the awesome work.

Posted by zipsforbananas in United Kingdom, 17 Jan 2013 18:46

@Tilius - Did you miss everything hallows81 said? I think he answered your question before you asked it. ;)

Posted by Telcontar in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:53

I'm so excited for the next LotR wave. This set looks fantastic! Plus the other sets (Council of Elrond, Pirate Ship (Corsairs of Umbar, etc.)) sound very intriguing. There's also rumoured to be an Orthanc, Balrog, and Treebeard set coming soon as well. Remember, those are rumoured, but I hope they're true! That would be incredible!

Posted by tmgm528 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 18:55

This set really does not impress me. other than the Eagle and a few of the figures (bricklink) I wont be getting this.

Posted by hallows81 in United Kingdom, 17 Jan 2013 19:03

I understand it is likely to change, I was just a bit shocked that a company the size of Lego would put out such a useless image (ok not put out to the public, but worse, it's buyers I guess)

I thought they may of made the parts they needed to make it look more realistic. It may change to some extent but Gandalf the white will still be gandalf the white, he won't change to galdalf the blonde.

I was just asking those that have experience with Lego prelim shots if this was the norm and if it was just a case that they don't make the new parts such as a white cape or hair piece and that the little minifig lineup on the bottom corner is more what they are going to look like.

Or was it some kind of wind up hoax picture.

On another point I don't recall eagles at the gate in the film or the game. I haven't got that far in the book yet though, are they at the gate in the book?

Posted by tmgm528 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 19:05

/\ They are in the movie not sure about the book. The pictures actually are not supposed to be released to public they are only meant for tlg

Posted by tmgm528 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 19:05

/\/\ And those will be the figures

Posted by Derek93 in Ireland, 17 Jan 2013 19:11

They are in the book, I would have liked Glorfindal minifig for council of Elrond but alas the sets are based on the movie so we get Arwen :(

Posted by CamberbrickGreen in United Kingdom, 17 Jan 2013 19:50

Yes more book designs would be nice- if the license ran as long as Star Wars did they may always backtrack and start 'milking' sets from the books. Oh how we love to speculate...:)

Oo spiky! Plus a possibly premlinary and rather 'one-piece' eagle, it seems very RED-brown. That creator eagle will do much more nicely thankyou so very much indeed.

Posted by Dragon_Master_48 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 20:15

Oh Sears!!

Looks like it might be a good set, though.

Posted by Almaras22 in Australia, 17 Jan 2013 20:33

Looks epic! But I'm hoping that, for the piece count, we get something a little more yhan literally a black gate. Is there anything behind the gate? If not, I may have to extend the wall myself, which is the fun of Lego I guess! I hadn't dared hope for an eagle, especially with the creator one, so this is a welcome surprise! Hopefully this is only a prelim eagle, though (it's almost looking like something out of duplo to me), but if not it's not the end of the world because ARAGORN IN GONDOR ARMOUR! :D

Posted by Kalhiki in United States, 17 Jan 2013 20:39

I'm excited. Glad their making more LOTR sets. The fact that we're getting the Mouth of Sauron is quite surprising since he only appeared in the extended edition (but then again, he did appear in the Lego game).
Still want Barad Dur and Orthanc, though. And the Balrog would be nice.

Posted by Nightshroud99 in Canada, 17 Jan 2013 21:56

The Mouth of Sauron was an unexpected surprise when I first heard he'd be in a set. Aragorn in his kingly garb is fantastic as well.

I'm really liking what they're doing with this line so far.

Posted by Isabella and Lego Liker in United States, 17 Jan 2013 22:33

Looks like the item has been taken off. No results for 79007 and Gandalf was the only result for Lord of the Rings for Lego.

Posted by meyerc13 in United States, 17 Jan 2013 22:46

Still works for me. You are searching sears.ca instead of sears.com and searching for 'black gate', right?

Posted by Isabella and Lego Liker in United States, 17 Jan 2013 23:01

I found it. I do believe it will be $60, which would be leagues better than Weathertop.

Posted by Jon_Brick in Canada, 17 Jan 2013 23:23

/\ Weathertop and this set were the same price in Canada so it most likely will be the same price as Weathertop in the U.S.

Posted by Dodge in Canada, 17 Jan 2013 23:59

Just took a look at this set, so the pic is still there for the time being.

The Mouth of Sauron is a BIG surprise, especially given how it looks in the film: not so kid-friendly. I don't mind though!

Posted by Isabella and Lego Liker in United States, 18 Jan 2013 00:45

@TheBrickTeen: I was refering to price per piece.

Posted by ninjagoyo in United States, 18 Jan 2013 00:52

That eagle looks hideous. Not even as poseable as the Dino dinos or the rancor. I really dislike these "giant-lump-of-plastic with only two articulation points" "maxifigures".

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 18 Jan 2013 03:36

It's been said before but I'll repeat it. This is a PRELIMINARY picture, so the set WILL change. Ie all the bits that are the wrong colour (eg Gandalf's tan hair rather than white, the rough giant eagle, the witch king's headgear. I'm surprised that this has Aragorn again, I would have thought it would have had Eowyn seeing as she fights the Witch King.

Posted by Ravenclaw in United Kingdom, 18 Jan 2013 04:51

It's not the witch king, its the mouth of sauron, Eowyn wasn't with them at the black gate, it would have been nice if it had been someone other than Aragorn again though!

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 18 Jan 2013 05:40

^Ah right, thought someone would correct me on that one. But still odd that they used a Boromir torso stand-in for Aragorn. You would have thought they'd have a spare Aragorn lying around.

Posted by icey in Denmark, 18 Jan 2013 06:44

The eagle looks a little bit disappointing... I had hoped for abit more majestic look on them... hope that is prelim too, but think not!

Posted by BJMdotLEGO in Belgium, 18 Jan 2013 07:11

"Filed under {Not specified}." Shouldn't this be in "New sets"?

Posted by piratemania7 in United States, 18 Jan 2013 07:14

I went to the website last night and saw the picture posted with the description; there seemed to be a few other set pictures that I did not recall seeing anywhere else for other themes.

Posted by piratemania7 in United States, 18 Jan 2013 07:15

I also do not know how they get to do this? Someone in their Canadian market must have slipt; and thought they were able to, or they were paid handsomely to do so. HAHA.

Posted by Apuleius in Hungary, 18 Jan 2013 08:30

I am really disappointed not to see the armoured troll in this set but hope to find it in a future Siege of Minas Tirith set. Hopefully we will have some new style orcs in this set not the same old Mordor Orcs already seen in the Orc Forge and Attack of the Wargs sets.

Posted by yamaki in Germany, 18 Jan 2013 09:11

Sorry, fans, but this looks terribly boring to me. Don't start collecting until we get some cheap army builders, otherwise it's pretty much useless to me. LotR 2&3 live so much from huge battles and every try of TLC to capture this without providing army builder packs is just lost. I am happy for those who like these sets, don't get me wrong, but it's not appealing 100% to me so far = no buy. Btw - 2013 is now officially the "LEGO Eagle Year", it seems.

Posted by MoonKnight in United States, 18 Jan 2013 09:37

@Ravenclaw - We're getting a brand new Aragorn in Gondorian armor, so it's not necessarily a bad thing that we're getting Aragorn again.

@Andhe - As I told Ravenclaw, we're getting Aragorn in his Gondorian armor and Boromir's torso is more similar than Aragorn's to the armor so that's why they used it. That would be my guess.

Posted by tmgm528 in United States, 18 Jan 2013 10:15

What?!!!! You can add it to your cart! Someone TRY BUYING IT! I would but my cash is for Arkham.

Posted by lilmonster777 in Canada, 18 Jan 2013 11:09

I have a sears.ca account,i added item to cart, went through to checkout process and at the very last step a banner told me that "next available ship date is july 13" :( lol

Posted by rnsrobot in Canada, 18 Jan 2013 12:20

Couple quick thoughts
- would love that to be the price, expecting the final price to be probably $89.99 CDN for a licensed set of that size. Hopefully doesn't hit the $100 price point...
- Looking forward to a more "kingly" Aragon, wish there were 1-2 more troop-type minifigures.
- If the picture is correct and the gate only has ONE of the "teeth" towers, that's... kind of a bummer. I don't like to get down on sets that aren't even released, but that's a pretty odd choice. I'd take another 200 pieces for a more 'complete' looking Black Gate.
- Not super stoked about the rumoured pirate ship. Would much prefer another big building in the style of Helm's Deep. Have to wait and see but I dunno if I'll buy every LOTR set this year like I did last year. Still hoping for a 'collector' pricepoint Rivendell or Minas Tirith or Cirith Ungol.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/91625176@N07/ this is a flicker account... if flicker feels that the image is in violation of their TOS rules, Flicker should be the ones to remove the picture. The web address that I posted is for a user's content and has other pictures as well..

I've seen a picture of that with a confidential sticker and Aragon has a new torso and shield with a tree on it like in the movie.

Still up there, as of 9:57 CT Jan. 18. Interesting that Sears Canada has it, since they have discontinued their toy department.

Posted by Brick Apostle in United Kingdom, 19 Jan 2013 11:27

Huw, I think it's disingenuous to knock a company for releasing confidential information when in essence you are doing the same. Whether you post the pictures or not, by merely relaying the information you are aiding the break in confidentiality by alerting more people to it then would otherwise have found this out. I would likely not have found this news had I not seen it on your website. I don't mind as I was grateful for the news, but I think you should choose which side of the fence you sit on. I think Lego benefit from the early release of information, as it creates excitement and anticipation and they could probably measure some of the response to determine whether the sets require additional tweaking. The general public would be totally oblivious to these releases as its not that easy to find.

Posted by legowomen1980p in United States, 20 Jan 2013 02:33

Funny thing I spoke with a manager from my local Lego store who is a member of Euro bricks and he told me that they know about stuff 6 to 8 months before it is released and they post stuff to let the public know about the sets.. So I start to think about it and start to realize that Lego unofficially wants everyone to know what is coming out before hand on one side of things... yet they threaten to sue people on the other hand.. It's a double edge sword..
I for one want to know well in advanced what sets are coming out.. Otherwise they are not getting my money. I only make $45K USD a year and I have a Budget. If I had prior knowledge of the sets I want to buy before hand. I could save and buy the sets I want.. paying bills being in my mid 30's.. I have a lot of responsibilities.. I can't just throw $500 on toys.. I have other things to buy.. Like Food.. Rent.. gasoline.. planning things out.. helps a lot in a global recession like that we are in..
Huw is not the one to blame... why not blame Euro Bricks and all the TLG employees who are members and post pictures of sets not released to the public.. why not blame them?

I wondered how anyone could get sets ways before the public gets them, wondered how they could review sets that were not even released yet.. I never knew that Eurobricks was an unofficial Lego group employee website.. Ever wonder where they get prizes to give away for the best designs... why they have so many contests..

Posted by Brick Apostle in United Kingdom, 20 Jan 2013 03:45

I wasn't blaming Huw - I'm happy to get the news - but I'd rather people aren't sanctimonious about releasing confidential news - you either have a role in releasing confidential news or you don't.

Posted by Aquaman in United Kingdom, 20 Jan 2013 15:35

Why have Sears.ca released a confidential image? Why couldn't a proper picture of the set be released that you can see the set? What is the point of this? We know what is in the set, so why can't the picture of the set be released instead of a confidential picture that know body knows what the set looks like? This make absoulutly no sense to me what so ever.
