London Toy Fair Report, Part 5

Top of the LEGO standThis is another view of the top of the LEGO stand at the toy fair.

I did say that part 4 would be the last but it seems I've upset a number of people by completely ignoring Hero Factory, Chima buildable figures and Duplo.

So for the sake of completeness and to keep everyone happy, here goes...

    HERO Factory

There will be seven new HF sets in August. All continue the 'Brain Attack' theme. There appears to be three pairs of colour-coordinated good guys and bad guys, which are in pouches: Surge and Dargon Bolt are blue/yellow, Stormer and Frost Beast are white and turquoise, Evo and Aquagon are a different shade of blue, black and yellow. I suspect they have new heads and weapons, but I'm not an expert.

The seventh, boxed, set, Jet Rocka is either half-man, half-aircraft, or a normal HF figure in a strap-on jet-pack/wing contraption.

    Chima buildable figures

There will be six of them, launched in August, one for each tribe. They are also packed in pouches and are very similar to last year's Super Heroes buildable figures in terms of size and components. They appear to use existing parts from the waist down and I suspect their skeleton is identical to the SH figs. Their torso plates are similar to that on the Iron Man one I have in front of me (the only one I have), I can't recall if they were all different in shape, or just different prints.

They all have new heads and some, the lion, gorilla and wolf, have large hands fitted with robot arms for fingers and, in the case of the lion, claws fitted to them. They each have a weapon which might be new or might be recycled HF. The eagle and raven have wings made from the wing parts used in the minifig sets.

It appears that there will be instructions to combine models to make larger ones.

    Duplo

Apologies, we didn't look too closely at the Duplo, but the main news is that there will be three 'Jake and the Never Land Pirates' sets in August. 10514 Jake's Pirate Ship Bucky, the largest, features a pirate ship and a small island and two figures. 10512 Jake's Treasure Hunt contains a rowing boat, a smaller island and 1 figure, Jake I presume. 10513 Never Land Hideout contains a island playground with a slide, and two figures, one of which has short legs.

That really does conclude my coverage of the London Toy Fair. The German toy fair starts next week. Let's hope some images emerge from it to save you having to visualise my descriptions.

I wasn't upset with the lack of Duplo news, but I did enjoy learning about the Jake sets. I don't really like spending money on Duplo because my three year old plays with LEGO well, but she loves Jake, so these are sets I'm interested in. Thanks for the descriptions.

@Huw- I wish you could add non-official box and figure pictures because Brickipedia & Heropedia had/has now so-called 'movie pics' of the heroes & villains a few weeks ago. But, Jet Rocka we cannot see much of him.

Thank you so much for this coverage. Glad to see that despite not mentioning these sets much in your previous coverage, you didn't just completely ignore them as you were viewing the display of new sets.

Hero Factory sets sound intriguing. Good to hear there'll be several sets with various types of blue, since it's a tremendously under-represented color in many previous waves. We haven't had a blue villain since the theme's first wave!

Chima sets seem like they could be exciting. I had speculated since first seeing the mechanical-looking wing elements from the Eagle vehicles that they might make their way into constraction sets, and it's good to see that's going to hold true. Wonder what colors they'll be in-- I believe I've seen one prelim pic of Razar that has dark red wings, and I would guess that Eris would have white ones, both of which would be welcome additions.

Combination models for the Chima sets could easily be rubbish, but hey, better than nothing. I wonder how the combinations would be arranged... could be one good guy set and one bad guy set for each pair, or could be some other combination.

Kind of disappointed that the Duplo lineup for Disney licenses is starting to focus on shows I'm unfamiliar with, when it had previously been either classic Disney properties (albeit under the painfully girlified Disney Princess branding) or Pixar properties. =( But I'm sure there'll be plenty of non-licensed Duplo sets of high quality, which is good because I have a little cousin who's just reaching the Duplo age range.

Again, thanks so much for offering this coverage. It's not much, but it should get the Hero Factory and constraction community buzzing a bit.

@everyone- Why do you need spoilers on Duplo!?!?! it just seems... weird. All us hardcore collectors will get at a new line of Ninjago, or a new theme of Hero Factory, but... why do your little 2-year-olds have to have spoilers of Duplo?

Like EricJohn (1st comment) my kids now play with Lego but love Jake and the Neverland Pirates and still get the box of Duplo out every now and again too. Still, my wife thinks i'll keep the Duplo when they get too old for it anyway......

@lego613master - one day when you have young kids, you'll understand! Even though Lego made a wonderful non-licensed Duplo pirate line in 2006 (set set 7880) there's been nothing since then, so I'm really looking forward to having more parts to add to the pirate ship.

My daughter loves Duplo and LOVES Jake. She will be super pleased to get some of those sets next Christmas. (well, assuming her toddler interest in Jake persists until then).

Huw, a dozen apologies, I don't know how in the world I missed it. Totally my bad.

As an aside, the Mobile Crane sounds awesome, can't wait to see it.

the cheeky inclusion of another photo of the paranoid display covering was not lost on me

Glad you liked it :-)

^^ The mobile crane is awesome. http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=8460-1 was one of the first sets I bought on exiting my dark ages and I've loved Technic mobile cranes ever since. there is so much movement and playabilty in them.

There seems to be enough of us who like to hear the Duplo news, too. My 2 &4 year old bys stll pullout Duplo. And the Jake sets sound great! Thanks for the updates from the fair... All 5!

I will probably get one or two of the Chima Const-action sets.
@CM4S Is this the same CM4S from CUUSO?

Posted by NeilJam in United States, 24 Jan 2013 19:53

My sons aren't quite old enough for regular Lego bricks, and Jake and the Neverland Pirates is their favorite show, so I will have to get those Duplo sets for them.

Posted by CM4S in United States, 24 Jan 2013 20:55

^^ Yes, and the same one from YT, Brickipedia, EB, and a bunch more. :)
