Sun promotion starting next weekend?

  • Sun promotion starting next weekend?

Posted by Huw, 07 Feb 2013 05:00. Filed under Shopping (UK).

We've heard a rumour from a normally reliable source that the next Sun promotion will start on Saturday 16th February.

It's said to contain 2 Lone Ranger, 3 Chima, 1 Ironman, 1 City and 1 Friends polybag, plus one other if it's to run Saturday to the following Sunday.

As I say this is just a rumour at the moment. There's another one going round, reported by BrickFanatics, that suggests it's going to be some sort of 'lucky dip'.

Whatever, we might get the first concrete information this weekend by way of an advert in the paper.

Oh god, can I really be bothered with the hassle and the shame of buying copies of the Sun........ Hhhhhmmm of course I can I'm a sucker for Lego!

On another note I received my VIP key chain this morning, I posted my account history in the thread if anyone wants to compare theirs.

Hopefully this won't be rumour, the collection looks very promising with the two previously shoew Ranger polys and the 3 chimas! (maybe a sloop flying of the city police helicopter would also be nice if I could get several from them:)

Whatever, I want them all, excluding the Friends...

Can't wait i love racing home and getting to WHS to grab them.

Is that half term week? As my kid is off next week. If so will be easier to grab them as no kid in tow.

Which Chima bags will it be?

Posted by woony2 in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 05:45

^ @Hob , it's half term for my kids, it does vary across the country. But it makes it easier for me as I'm off that week and I won't have to orchestrate bogus trips out of work.

Posted by pantzman in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 05:55

I used to look forward to this but now it just fills me with dread...the parking...the queueing...the shame of asking for 4 papers and explaining I have 3 kids plus me...

No LOTR/Hobbit? I guess these might be held back to hype the film next Christmas if there's an autumn Sun promo as well?

Posted by hantot in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 06:27

They've also been calling it "The Sun’s FREE LEGO Lucky Dip" in their emails which I've not noticed before? Could this mean we get a random bag each day?

Posted by hantot in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 06:28

and boooo to no Star Wars ;-)

Posted by PocasNuckie in Portugal, 07 Feb 2013 06:31

If anyone is willingly to get me some and ship to Portugal, please contact me (or wait for it to be a sure thing to do it, lol). Thanks

Oh and yes, boo that's there no SW too :(

Doesn't 2 Lone Ranger sets seem unlikely as the film isn't released until July?

Posted by brickboxtv in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 07:01

This sounds good and i hope its true about the lone ranger sets as it would be nice to get first stab at them in the UK

Posted by aaclapham in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 07:21

Definitely interested in the 2 Lone Ranger, 3 Chima, and 1 Iron Man Bags!

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 07 Feb 2013 07:56

Jealous! But at least that should mean a flood of all these will be available and it won't be too hard or expensive to get ahold of them on Bricklink.

Kinda odd that they'd be putting Lone Ranger and Iron Man out there so well in advance of the films though. You'd think Disney would prefer them to be released later on, to really capitalize on the publicity.

When you say a "normally reliable source". Does that mean that sometimes he/she is not reliable? Like say at 2 on a Saturday morning after 15 pints? But when it comes to important things (Like Sun Lego) they are totally reliable? Just teasing. That's just how my brain"Works"

Anyhoo! Can't wait. I love (relitavely) free Lego.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 08:39

I guess I am hoping there is no truth in the lucky dip rumour. How would it work? One day? Each shop getting a different set? Shops getting a mixed box? It's not really practical it is, whichever method. It just ends up causing disappointment and frustration for Sun readers which I'm sure they don't want.

I'm in the US but have a trip planned to London the week of the 18th. How exactly does the Sun promotion work? You buy the newspaper and they give you the polybag on the spot? Or do they give you a coupon and you go somewhere else to redeem it? Is it any news seller or are there specific participating shops you must go to?

Any assistance anyone can provide is much appreciated!

Posted by DarthSte in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 08:51

@RumPunchDrunk...

Usually you need to redeem it at a particular store. IIRC WHSmiths and Toys'R'Us are the usual two places. WHSmiths sell the paper, so usually redeem on the spot when you buy the paper.

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 09:10

I would imagine the 'lucky dip' is more likely to be a mail-in or online competition, where you may or may not win, rather than shops handing out random sets. 1. It would cause madness and a massive headache for WHSmiths et al 2. They always put the more desirable sets on the weekend when the paper is more expensive.

Posted by jockosjungle in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 09:34

I doubt the Lucky dip idea would work, all it'd mean is me buying more copies of the paper on day 1 and binning them all (or better yet telling Smiths I don't want the paper), no point in buying them all week.

I'll believe it when I see it tbh, I'm fairly certain we've had false rumours before both on date and the items included.

Bring it on! LR polys DO seem unlikely in advance of the movie release and full sets being available, but if so who am I to argue? I saw the Lucky dip reference on a Sun advert that Rich showed on Brick Fanatics, but i'm hoping that is something online or competition based and this is just the 'buy it Saturday, get Iron Man' style deal as usual.

Maybe it will be blind bags. You then get a blind bag with a random set in like the collectable minifigures. It may be a way of trying to put off scalpers. While it is a pain for AFOLS if your a kid you can do swaps etc so it works for them. Or you purchase the newspaper and have to cut a token out and send it off and get a random set in return. Like with the old cereal give aways.

Who knows since some of the Hobbit Lego sets are from movies that haven't been released yet. Or, I guess you could just assume they are from the book.

Posted by GoldJono in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 13:16

I was thinking it would be quite cool if they had scratch cards in the paper with everyone being a winner, with the majority of prizes being polybags and they could have grand prizes of larger sets or all expenses paid trips to Legoland.

Posted by Peter1975 in Netherlands, 07 Feb 2013 13:48

I'm happy with my friend who's living in Cardiff. I ordered him it's time to read the Sun everyday. At least as long they give away free Lego's.

Posted by DarthSte in United Kingdom, 08 Feb 2013 06:13

@Margot, that is mainly due to Peter Jackson deciding to make it 3 films rather than 2, really late on... Games Workshop and whoever made the action figures have both released characters that haven't been seen yet because of that.
Having toys come up months before the film and only just after the main trailer, as freebies...? No, I don't buy it at all.

I had terrible difficulty locating these last time they ran the promotion. Finding Lord Lucan would have been easier. :/

Awesome! I can't wait!

Posted by Duq in Ireland, 09 Feb 2013 18:33

In the Irish Sun today there was a voucher for series 7 minifigs.

Posted by jpw150 in United States, 09 Feb 2013 19:56

Why does the UK get all the polybags? :(

Posted by secretjedi in United Kingdom, 10 Feb 2013 04:52

I would have thought there would have been advertising in yesterdays Sun for next weeks promotion? It being half term next week, so I was expecting it to start then??

Posted by Haga in Hungary, 10 Feb 2013 13:36

Dear my friends, would you be please so kind as to tell me if there will be this promo, what is the tradition; Can I collect first the vouchers all over the week from the Suns then the last day I would go to WHSmiths or Toysrus and collect the polybags, or it is necassary to collect them the very day of the magazines published?

Thanks!
