Belkin announces licensing deal with LEGO

  • Belkin announces licensing deal with LEGO

Belkin, manufacturer of tech products including phone cases, today announced it had struck a deal with LEGO to make 'buildable' phone cases, initially for Apple products.

I'm sure this will be a dream come true for many: those who are both LEGO and Apple fan boys, of whom there are quite a few on the Brickset staff :-)

I don't think this image is necessarily a picture showing what we can expect because it was taken at CES last month, before the announcement. But if they are anything like that shown, they'll be pretty cool...

Awesome :-)

Oh, the possibilities! Put a couple of Technic holes on there and build a Mindstorms robot around it! Then again, Apple fanboys are probably more into Friends than Mindstorms... (LOL - just joking!)

Would need to buy an outer case just to stop those studs wearing a hole through your pocket. Terrible idea.

Brickcases by http://smallworks.com look more like LEGO to me. These just have a tacked on 4 x 10 plate.

Nice. Now I have to get an Apple thing.

Hmm, phone cases, you see the thing is, phones already come with cases, really nice ones that protect all the important stuff inside the phone from getting damaged. Still, at least I know where to look if I really want to turn my phone into a brick.

Lol! Bricked your phone! That puts new meaning to that phrase! :P

Micro-mosaic time?

The case would work wonderfully for me. I built a phone holder for my desk out of LEGO and this would allow it to easily connect up and stay in position. I just hope they offer more than Apple cases.

The cases by smallworks that emzex posted are great. I have one for my iPhone 4 and get compliments on it all the time. I put flat tiles on them to create designs and that alleviates the problem of bricks wearing a hole in your pocket!

*cough* There goes the android logo cuuso project. *cough*

I have a smallworks case, too. I tried to take it off, but it started to crack. That is my only complaint with it. I think in clear it looks a lot cooler than these things. That looks like something a clown would have on his phone.

I've had one of the Smallworks cases for over a year and still get compliments on it. The Belkin site has all six designs listed here (looks like they moved the press release):

My Smallworks.com case has been permanently attached to my iphone4 since I acquired it - http://www.flickr.com/photos/wiredforsound23/6892697395/

I have a red Smallworks case, but these Belkin ones don't look half bad: http://www.belkin.com/resources/img/press/hi-res/lego_iphone_front-hi-res.jpg

It's a shame they'll likely only be for iPhone 5, and I just upgraded to a 4S last summer. Still, my Smallworks case will suffice for the time being.

For those non-phone-users, there's another company called TinkerBrick that makes cases for iPod Touch that are pretty nice. They have studs on the front and anti-studs on the back, making them easy to build into MOCs. There are some videos on YouTube demonstrating potential functions.

So with the case and just 1 tile/plate stuck on it you've about doubled the depth of your phone, for which a chunk of the cost/development goes into keeping it as thin as possible.

Well done. A piece of stupidity. No doubt the apple types will be queuing up for it.

Honestly, I'm not even sure how much this constitutes "news" whenever a company announces an intention to someday soon start selling a phone case for one model of one phone from one company and it has a plate attached to the back.

It could be that I'm just tired of being in the camp of disregarded people without an Apple device, but I guess I'll just wait to hear once they have something on sale, develop for more than just this one narrow set of device, or something.

The iphone cases look great, the Ipod ones in the picture above, not so much.

yes

I had a phone that looked like a brick in the late 90s!
