60026 Town Square

Posted by Huw, 16 Feb 2013 14:35. Filed under New sets.

Okay, so I wasn't the first to post pictures of this new City set, although I haven't seen it pop up in any of the RSS feeds that I monitor, so it might be news to some of you. Set number 60026 Town Square is a somewhat strange collection of models that will be available as a 'market driven' product later in the year. That means it won't be available everywhere, probably just in one specific retailer per country. It will of course be available in brand stores and at shop.LEGO.com.

60026 Town SquareSo what is it... well, most of what you see in this picture. A bike shop, a pizza shop, a statue, a crane, a bus and a street sweeper. I didn't think the gas station was part of it, but other sites are reporting that it is so I might have misunderstood. (Update: it's not)

The picture shows two bike shops placed side-by-side and, I believe, a larger pizza shop than will be in the set.

60026 Town SquareThe crane is hoisting the statue onto its plinth.  I don't know whether it will come with enough baseplates for all the models; but it does look as if the square where the statue is, will be on one.

60026 Town SquareThe bus looks particularly interesting; your city can never have enough buses!

LEGOWorld 2013Here's a good photo by wiredforsound that shows the sweeper and some new coloured bikes. The bike shop will be half this size.

To my mind, the individual models don't really seem to form a coherent 'whole', but they will be handy to scatter around your city and of course make a great change from more of the same emergency services.

There are a few more photos on flickr.

This just seems like a bizarre set to me, the individual elements are nice, but the crane has no place there if you ask me. However, the bike shop and statue in particular look very attractive.

Posted by Nesquik in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2013 15:06

This is precisely what City has needed for some time now. It encourages the builder to be flexible with the models, and use their imagination to create narratives and town planning.

Awesome, but not at the same time..

Posted by lippidp in United States, 16 Feb 2013 15:07

Wow, no safety in Legoland! That crane is gonna kill someone for sure!

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 16 Feb 2013 15:08

Yeah the set is nutty, so if the gas station is included it wouldn't surprise me at all. The ste is simply not a $100, it's just a weird collection of things, and the bike shop itself should be the whole building and not two of them.

What new color bikes are we getting? We have already had azure blue bike in a friends set.

Posted by bluemodern in United States, 16 Feb 2013 15:12

Looks good and a bunch of stuff I don't have in my city. I particularly like the red bus.

Posted by LostInTranslation in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2013 15:13

We had a bus, a bike shop and a pizza place in the City Corner set #7641 from 2009. I appreciate it when they do a non-fire/police themed City set but honestly, couldn't Lego have used a little more imagination here?? There's so much scope of things to include, and yet they choose three elements they did barely four years ago.

Posted by Nesquik in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2013 15:14

I wouldn't judge the product too much yet, because all the photos prove are that each element has been modified to fit within the town as a display piece. I would hazard a guess that each element is placed on a separate plate for maximum playability.

Posted by lego613master in United States, 16 Feb 2013 15:24

I don't get this. So, is it like this. They release 3-5 sets that are all supposed to connect together, like a mega-set sold in 5 different boxes?

Posted by CianD in Ireland, 16 Feb 2013 15:27

If the petrol station is in this (or is another set), I want it. Hasn't been a decent looking one in years.

Posted by ickleb in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2013 15:36

I'm really loving this set(s).. Thinking that it might be a case of having 2 of these sets. Love the crane detail is great! Do we know how much it will be?

Posted by Isabella and Lego Liker in United States, 16 Feb 2013 15:43

I'm thinking about $120 and may be the first city set with over 1,000 pieces.

Posted by chrismajor2124 in United States, 16 Feb 2013 15:44

Incredible

Posted by Konstantin in United States, 16 Feb 2013 15:49

This looks like the previous other city set . I can combine the two to make a good city.

Posted by legomaniac in United States, 16 Feb 2013 15:50

I like it. but proabably wont buy it. I dont have a spare room to make a LEGO city :/

Posted by tsi in Germany, 16 Feb 2013 15:58

For some time ago LEGO asked from which old set we would like to see a new interpretation.
Serveral times the set #1592 "Town Square" was mentioned. This set had a statue.
Now we'll have a new set #600026 "Town Square" with a statue ...

Posted by blounty23 in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2013 16:04

Lego city looks like a weird place to live, not only is there those random things, there is also forests, mines, a big harbour, a seriously large amount of crime and there must be at least 20 pyromaniacs. What's even weirder is about 95% of the people living there are men. It must be quite scary for the minifigures.

Posted by LegoTom_Clevo in United States, 16 Feb 2013 16:17

It does look strange in some ways, but I do want that crane! Be interesting to see it not jammed into another scene.

Posted by alexfig8 in United States, 16 Feb 2013 16:19

Looks nice, and yes, although we did get a pizza shop, bike shop and bus, the bike shop in the old set was basically just there to make the Price per Piece better. This one looks tons better. And is is just me, or does the crane look a lot like the one we got back with the older construction site from '07ish?

Posted by bellybutton290 in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2013 16:35

I have been very keen to see something like this for while thanks TLG I can now expand on my city without resorting to having more police and fire stations. Set looks good but I bet you there will be a need to get a decent baseplate or two. Hopefully it does have the petrol station as it will go nicely with last years parking garage set and the new petrol tanker.

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 16 Feb 2013 16:39

Maybe it's just me, but I don't find this set attractive at all.

Posted by genecyst in Italy, 16 Feb 2013 16:47

when the previous pizza restaurant came out i was in "my wallet dark age", this seems really attractive to cover that miss.

Posted by cecilie in Norway, 16 Feb 2013 17:03

I asked about the gas station, and it is not part of the set, nor another new set, it's just something they made for the layout. Sadly. I would love to have a new gas station.

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 16 Feb 2013 17:12

A new gas station would be a welcome sight.

The set is supposed to have 916 pieces, so not 1,000. The wait continues.

Posted by legomaniac in United States, 16 Feb 2013 17:12

@ blounty23 LOL Its true :p So many police officers and firefighters, but there is a lot of crime. Barely any women and houses :P

Posted by Paperballpark in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2013 17:24

Maybe there's a lot of crime *because* there's barely any women?!

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 16 Feb 2013 17:52

It's kind of a mish-mash (especially with the inclusion of the crane), but I suppose one could look at it like a starter set in the same vein as the upcoming 60023 City Starter Set. There's a bit of everything.

Lost in Translation says, "we had a bus, a bike shop and a pizza place in the City Corner set #7641 from 2009. That is exactly what I was thinking. When I heard LEGO was coming out with a town square I was excited. I figured it would be a statute and fountain surrounded by a couple of trees and a bench. Having some buildings included is great but we had a pizzeria, bus and bike shop in the City Corner set in 2009. We also had a street sweeper in the Public Transport set.

If they wanted to include buildings how about a gas station and post office. We haven't had large gas station and post office sets in the City line in a while. The Friends theme also has a lot of great City-type buildings but they don't fit in with the City theme because of the colour scheme. How about a school, bakery and pool in the City line? More small city houses would be great too. The Town them from 1987 to 1995 was great for a diversity of city sets. More recently, the Town Plan set was great because LEGO included city hall, a gas station and a movie theatre. These are just some ideas but I think I'll pass on the Town Square set and build a MOC town square for my city instead.

Posted by Isabella and Lego Liker in United States, 16 Feb 2013 18:22

Lowering my price point to be $90-$100 based off of the non coast Guard sets.

Posted by Lordmoral in Puerto Rico, 16 Feb 2013 18:44

Great, I will put to good use this buildings in my futuristic city.

Posted by darthgiggitygoo in Australia, 16 Feb 2013 18:47

Minifigs must really love Pizza!!! ^.^
Kinda wish it was another type of food place - perhaps a restaurant? Even Chinese take away would be cool!
Really love the set though - I wish they made these sets more regularly!
Even if they perhaps released a different shop twice a year! :)

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 16 Feb 2013 19:22

A town with no houses, a lot of pizza and only guys seems like the place for me. Where can I get a ticket to LEGO Land. ;)

Posted by Town in United States, 16 Feb 2013 19:22

Interesting...

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2013 21:14

I like this. Pizza shop has a nice design, love those windows. I'm pretty sure that it's two back-to-back sets in that display, so I'm sure it'll look less awkward without the random jutting out bits. The bike shop does look like a well designed building, plus is that a black and orange tiled floor? LEGO City has too many bley/green baseplate floors, so it's great to see them moving on from that. Only thing is I wish they'd used this opportunity to bring out more new/rare coloured bikes! I'll wait to see final pics before commenting on the scenery - cant tell what else is actually in the set yet.

I don't care that these ideas have already been used in the 2009 set - yes, it would have been wonderful to get some new things, like a coffee shop or toy store, but it's still nice to see any Civillian buildings. Just be thankful it's not another emergency services set!:P

Is there any info on prices/release date yet?

Posted by Isabella and Lego Liker in United States, 16 Feb 2013 21:33

I'm thinking about $90-100/60-70UK and July-early August.

Posted by TooMuchLEGO in United States, 16 Feb 2013 21:36

I'll admit it... this looks awesome.

Posted by Kliq in United States, 16 Feb 2013 22:00

Personally, I didn't pick up 7641, so these would be new buildings to me. It does seem like a weird looking set. Something that might have been released under the DACTA range. Still seems like a nice future purchase, though. :]

Posted by BJMdotLEGO in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2013 22:31

So it's basically an upgrade of http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=7641-1 but with some extra bits. The bike shop has been improved, the pizza place has a nice color scheme. The crane and the statue just seem random. I'd want about half of what's in there, most likely two copies of the pizza place and bike shop to construct decent versions of each (as in this set-up). Those and one bus. The rest? Meh. Wondering if selling the surplus items wouldn't finance most of the cost of two boxes.

Posted by fikko3107 in Indonesia, 16 Feb 2013 22:43

I'm not very old in the LEGO community, so I'm just wondering, does this happen often? I mean, revealing a whole new set in an obscure layout filled with other MOCs?

Posted by AlexWeston in United Kingdom, 17 Feb 2013 02:06

One word - disappointed
I was really looking forward to this set and excepting the statue, there is nothing that I haven't already got in my city! I prefer the older sets from 7641 ( less futuristic and more traditional) and had hoped for some fresh thinking. I agree that a Chinese restaurant would have been nice or maybe something like the little shops on cuusoo ( support if you haven't already)
I have the old burger/snack bars, post offices and houses from the 80s already in my city - just wish I could get some new sets worthy of joining them...... :(

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 17 Feb 2013 02:07

Not often, but it's not completely out of the question.

Posted by Master Ian in United States, 17 Feb 2013 02:09

The set as a whole seems pretty nice in my opinion. The bus is better than the old one, and I don't have a crane yet, so the one in this set will be of good use in my city. The only thing I really don't like is the street sweeper. It looks like a mini tractor with a brush on the front, and seems really out of place because of how dumb it looks. I will probably just scrap it for bricks seeing as the one I have from the public transportation set is much better.

Posted by CzechMate in Australia, 17 Feb 2013 02:22

I'm guessing 1,500 pieces, with a price tag of $270-ish Australian.

Posted by Leggo my LEGO in Canada, 17 Feb 2013 02:32

I love the bus, it looks way better than the old yellow one.

Posted by icey in Denmark, 17 Feb 2013 02:59

Hmm... An Italian looking piazza with a statue of Marco Polo would have become a bestseller.

Posted by AllanSmith in New Zealand, 17 Feb 2013 03:38

Bus is great. I see it has 2 of the old train doors in black :)

Posted by Starik20X7 in Australia, 17 Feb 2013 04:05

Definite buy this one. So many awesome elements here, plenty of playability.

Posted by Foxie in Netherlands, 17 Feb 2013 04:51

Has that bus old school doors? (5 high instead if 6)

Posted by Venunder in United Kingdom, 17 Feb 2013 06:10

I am guessing that this is an update of the old city square, a replacement for the City Corner and a neat way to throw in a construction element in the form of a new crane all rolled into one set.
For new Lego fans this could be a "classic" set. Unfotunately for AFOL's we have seen most of this before.

Personally I would prefer Lego to do the Cuusoo small shops projects. But I expect this is a big "BUT", there might be some "brand" problems.
With 7eleven, Shell, Burger King, Costa etc requiring a cut of the profits or at least some lengthy discussions about how their "brand" might be perceived.

I think lego should consider producing a basic set of shops, each at the £15 pricepoint using their own naming system and then leave it to the AFOL's to produce the stickers for the sets. Although selling Brand name stickers would also run into issues.

Posted by romdam in United States, 17 Feb 2013 06:31

The crane is way out of place in this set. So it's main purpose is to put up the statue? I was pumped for this set as well but with basically the same set released a few years ago, not so much. I was hoping for some new ideas, some new buildings to add to my classic layout, but I guess no one can think of anything new anymore.

I can just see the meeting for the idea of this set.

Person #1:"Hmm, what would go well in a Town Square?"
Person #2: "How about a Pizza Place and a Bike Store and throw in some random crane?"
Person #1: "But what about a statue?"
Person #2: "Yea, I suppose, throw one of those in"
Person #3: "Didn't we just do a set with a Pizza Shop, bus, and Bike Shop?"
Person #1: "Yea, but kids outgrow Lego and none will remember that set. That's why we need new Fire and Police every year"
Person #2: "Plus this set has a statue!!!"

Posted by rangermatt in United Kingdom, 17 Feb 2013 07:00

According to brickipedia the German price is €129.99€. Not good

Posted by brixton in Canada, 17 Feb 2013 07:48

Too bad the gas station isn't an actual set that will go on sale soon. I'd get that for sure. The circular shape of the bike shop is cool and so is the green colour scheme for the pizzeria but those are the only features of those buildings that catch my attention. I like the new bus but there's so much in this set that I don't like that I can't justify getting this solely for the bus. The statute is great. I think I'll just create a MOC town square with a statute for my city though.

Posted by tontonsega in France, 17 Feb 2013 07:52

gas station probably be 60028 or 60029 city set.

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 17 Feb 2013 08:11

I agree that it's kinda lazy that they made these shops for pizza and bikes just like the 2009 set, but on the other hand, if it's really bothering you, you can always turn it into something else. The only thing telling you the pizzeria is a pizzeria is one sticker and a few pizza-printed round tiles. Skip the sticker and use some ice cream pieces and voila, you've got an ice cream parlor!

Posted by el_rey95 in United States, 17 Feb 2013 10:16

All I want is a news van, reporter, camera person, and maybe a news helicopter.

Posted by wiredforsound in United States, 17 Feb 2013 12:29

I went back to look at the LEGO City display on the last day of LEGOWorld and in my picture, there are two Pizza Shops back to back, which is why it looks so much larger. Meanwhile the Bike Shop appeared to be one shop stacked on top of another. Unsure why the display would be so cofusing, but then again on the AFOL collectors would have noticed the unreleased sets in the first place.

Posted by Blockland in United States, 17 Feb 2013 12:53

This looks incredible, however, this will be expensive.

Posted by HFAN334 in United States, 17 Feb 2013 13:40

Um wow. That is just amazing. The only thing I would change is add another building.

Posted by brixton in Canada, 17 Feb 2013 13:41

Graysmith is right. We can always convert the buildings into something else such as an ice cream parlour. Not a bad idea.

Posted by Town in United States, 17 Feb 2013 14:55

I prefer the bus and Pizza place from the City Corner. The crane inclusion is bizarre. Will have to make the buildings into something else if I get it.

Posted by redgreenblue in Denmark, 17 Feb 2013 16:49

I too was disappointed when I read that it was basically a copy of City corner 7641, with a statue.

*But* looking at the pictures, it's a good implementation, and sufficiently different to the last one I think. A nice round fronted bike shop and good use of lime bricks on the pizza place. I think the statue is ok, but depending on the price could just be on a 8x8 plate. The bus looks good in red.

Although the bicycle is also in the Friends camper set 3184 and the motorbike is in 4433 so nothing new there.

The crane is badly scaled and I dislike it, but when I was a kid I thought cranes were great fun.

The sweeper looks like an afterthought to improve the price... the steering wheel is too low and the design is very basic. Nice ear defenders though.

Posted by romdam in United States, 18 Feb 2013 03:00

If "we can always convert the buildings into something else", then why do they make the "sets"? Obviously, I know you can do this. But this is a "set" that was also a "set" a few short years ago. If that is the comeback when someone has a legitmate gripe about a set, then why even make "sets"? Just release buckets of bricks.

But me as the buyer, why can I not expect more? Bike shops and pizza parlors? Above was posted:

"For some time ago LEGO asked from which old set we would like to see a new interpretation.
Serveral times the set #1592 "Town Square" was mentioned. This set had a statue.
Now we'll have a new set #600026 "Town Square" with a statue ..."

So the answer is a redo of City Corner with a statue thrown in?

Why does everyone have to like everything that comes out? If someone dislikes something, "you can always mod it" or "don't buy it then". Is that how you would run a company? Tell people to like it and that's the final word?

Posted by Zapp Brannigan in Canada, 18 Feb 2013 09:38

Sure there is another bike shop and pizzeria, but just look at the fresh, newly designed buildings. You can't tell me that Lego hasn't been innovative in that respect. It appears that many people cannot see beyond the simple titles given to the buildings, instead of also taking into account the execution of the set, which definitely contributes significantly more to the overall quality. I'm very sure that, if the buildings were entirely new concepts, such as a post office or bakery, but the buildings were just several pieces slapped together, you would be equally disappointed. For example, take the bike shop from 7641, and then take the one shown here. There is no question as to which one is better. Back then, the bike shop was a relatively new idea (yes there have been others but that was the first in recent history), but its design was simple and lacking. My point is, design is key and it should be the first thing to be considered. On the other hand, I know it's frustrating to have yet another police or fire station, so there must be a balance between design and repetitiveness. But something SIMILAR to (NOT exactly the same) 60026 has only been done ONCE before, so I would only concentrate on the design and not the repetitive factor, unlike the many people here who are saying "Oh, another bike shop and pizzeria, instant disappointment." Always bad to be closed minded.

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 18 Feb 2013 14:18

Everyone seems to be complaining that they are the same things. Yes, both this set and City Corner had pizza shops. However, that set didn't actually have a bike shop. It was a skate/repairs shop. This one seems more like a big bike showroom than a repairs shop, and the two are nothing alike anyway.

Posted by LCPTF8404 in United States, 18 Feb 2013 18:00

Man this looks like an AWESOME set! I especially love the red bus. It can go with the yellow bus from #7641 and the green/white bus from #8404. The statue looks amazing. The bike shop is huge and comes with a new blue bike. And, the pizza shop looks small, but I think it will be a great addition. The crane is cool but too big. One problem is that the street cleaner looks sloppy. Overall, this set would probably be from an 8.5 to 9.5.

Posted by Holye-J in United Kingdom, 18 Feb 2013 18:45

Im presonally disapointed in this set because i believed it would be a slight re-incarnation of the town plan, with a more city build and feel.:(

I know the buildings can be what you make it regarless of what it says on the sticker (pizza place, bike shop.. etc) but considering how much other ideas there are out ther and how much money one has to pay for these sets lego sould have thought this out a bit better.

As a shell buildings in 'design' the bike shop, and pizza place are ok, but the parts and acessories that come with it are all to readlily avaliable from other sets. Why bother buy sets if the concept is going to be a re-designed set of previous with no new elements. might as well make MOC's.

Considering that lego are going to make this a 'market driven' or 'exclusive' set they should have pulled out all the shots on this one to make it stand out a bit, by implementing some new or rarely repeated ideas. I dont think thats closed minded IMO, and I think thats why alot of people are disapointed.

The bus is nice tho ;)
